      I'm an American and a Trump supporter. It's easy for me to support military action against North Korea but, I don't feel right backing up something that really won't effect my life the way it would surrounding countries. Your video with the people in Japan on this helped so much! Any chance we could hear South Koreans or people from China on this subject?

      You guys should do a segment interviewing the protesters of the new American base they're building in Okinawa. I hear that it's just becoming another colony of the US fast and a lot of the elderly are against it while the youths are indifferent. It's kind of linked to this NKorea "threat" as well. There's a lawsuit going on in the West Coast suing the American government on the building of the base as well as it supposedly damages the eco system and brings harm etc. even though the lawsuit is in trial, they have already begun building the base. I think it'd be interesting to ask if Okinawans think they're becoming another territory of the US like Puerto Rico and compare Okinanwan opinion to other Japanese opinions in Tokyo or elsewhere. It'd also be interesting to ask if becoming a territory of the US is a possibility in their minds considering Puerto Rico, and the recent hurricane that has destroyed it and the lack of help they're actually getting from the Federal government-if they are for it or against (it's a stretch, but I think it's interesting to think about).

      R. J. Nice propaganda mate. You show your lack of history knowledge by not acknowledging that Okinawa was a US territory until the 1970's. If the US wanted an Okinawan territory, they wouldn't have given it back.

    Honestly I think that North Korea is not just a threat for japan but for the other countries too. If North Korea keep provoking America and Japan than a World war may broke out and the whole mankind has to pay the price. Therefore, it is very important that every country should take steps to stop North korea. My prayers and blessings are with japanese people. Love from India

    • @BRTxNL
      @BRTxNL 6 лет назад +7

      I don't see a World War happening, who's gonna help N.Korea? Not even China or Russia would try to defend this country and it's establishment. Therefor, although with a lot of casualties, this war would end quick and swiftly. They have almost zero supplies to feed their army and population and they lack most modern equipment that countries such as America can and will use in combat.

    • @thomaslee6534
      @thomaslee6534 6 лет назад +3

      I read that if North Korea were to attack, there is reason to believe China would still back them up. Not in terms of providing more military power, but in economical support. If North Korea were to go down, large numbers of North Koreans will flock over to China to seek refuge. This will bring on immense stress in the Chinese economy and risk internal instability. Because of this I believe China would still have to back North Korea regardless what they do. The biggest influential factor whether North Korea does wage a nuclear war will be China.
      Just my two cents.

    • @milford30
      @milford30 6 лет назад +1

      May I ask what's reason it is that China will back them? I only see reasons why CCP won't back them, e.g rest of the world against them including Russia + CCP does not does not want NK to have nukes + CCP only cares about CCP.
      Why would you pump money into a war that has no chance of doing any damage to the US short of nuclear warheads + maybe destroy Seoul. If NK decides to detonate a few nuclear warheads in the atmosphere (before US defence systems can shoot them down) the whole of Asia has a giant problem. I'll mention again CCP only cares about CCP!

    • @milford30
      @milford30 6 лет назад +3

      Your prayers should be with the North Korean people, Japan is ranked 8th in the WORLD in military spending for 2016 at 46 billion USD, that's more that South Korea.....

    Re-militarization/starting a war so that people value their lives again?! Is that woman out of her mind? Also "killing them selves over such small things" victims of karoshi (death by overwork) often work 100 hours of overtime/month and more, for several months. It's a serious problem and nothing to joke about.

      You didn`t understand her point.

    • @Gillsing
      @Gillsing 6 лет назад +4

      Apparently there are some indications that there are less mental health problems during times of war. Not sure if that's mainly a matter of people having more important things to care about than reporting mental health issues, but it doesn't seem so far-fetched that many people might function better during times of war than during times of peace.
      The problem for _some_ war veterans appears to be not that they experienced terrible things during their war, but that modern civilian life seems devoid of meaning compared to working within a 'tribe' to keep everyone alive. I guess working for an employer to keep customers happy might not give the same feelings of being _connected_ to people?

    The girl with the mask makes quite an interesting point imo - I've expirienced this because I live in Ukraine, which is, at the present moment, in a state of undeclared war with Russia and there are less and less suicide happenings (at least in the media). There are some positive moments in remilitarization of Japan, because as practise has shwon us - you can't rely on other countries to provide security for your homeland (USA nad Russia were supposed to be guarantees of Ukraine keeping its territories in exchange for ban of nuclear weapon research and manufacture in Ukraine and just look at what happened). So I personally feel that Japan should remilitarize, but it must be done very carefully and cautiously to prevetn the abuse of this idea by politicians - it should be first and foremost done in order to protect Japan's nation and not to fuel some politician's personal urges.

How do you know they didn't ask 5-6 people in between every one person they interviewed? They're being selective and you shouldn't just assume that this is a valid representation of the Japanese population as a whole.

She's not saying that is the solution because there is no appreciation in life! She's saying Japan is too peace full for that. Its sadly true, you can say "I want to kms" but if someone is trying to kill you then you start to appreciate yourself and run not that you should go out and kill.

    • @hjpop
      @hjpop 6 лет назад +33

      Perhaps from your perspective, it seems like that. She's actually taking a very pragmatic approach to it. She's saying that Japanese people are so peaceful and lulled into a country built on a pacifist mindset that they are blinded to the harsh reality of the world around them. Whether from Karoshi or hikikomori, people in Japan today are too preoccupied by their tiny world and can't seem to open their eyes. She's not saying "Rearm to get people to stop killing themselves over petty things" but "forcing people to rethink Japan's pacifist views will cause them to open and look around and see that the world is so much bigger than them, that their issues are genuinely small and not to waste their life."

      College age men and women are the ones likeliest to fight because that's the general "recruiting age" that militaries target. I actually don't mind that people don't want to re-militarize, most of them just want peace.
    However all those young people who would refuse to fight to protect their country is sort of pathetic.
    My country is not a country of war, militarism or Nationalism but I and just about anyone I know and had such a conversation with would have no issue fighting should we be attacked, even if it was a war we could not win if it made sure children, elderly and women could flee. I know that's not politically correct to say but I think it is the minimal duty one should have to his or even her homeland.

    I think all these talks about re-militarization are nonsense. In terms of overall capabilities, Japanese self defense force is probably ranked second in Asia(barring nuclear weapons). Japan has started re-militarization after the outbreak of Korean war.

      Japan's deployed overseas, first in PKO capacity and then in Iraq. What Japan needs to do, and they have actually done it, is to loosen the restrictions on weapons use. Before, they couldn't fire back at an enemy unless the enemy was actively shooting at them. It didn't matter if the enemy was shooting at Australians next to the Japanese. The law prevented them from returning fire unless a Japanese soldier came under attack. It further prevented them from providing convoy cover for any non-Japanese citizen or vehicle unless within narrowly defined parameters and only outside of an active warzone. It's not that they have zero experience, they just were handtied.

      Hi. First of all, I am from South Korea.
      One of the small political party, whose stance is far-right, is trying to adopt that TNW to our mlitary. But, Korean people are not eager to do anything that might cause more devastation and catastrophe.
      Most of the Korean people have opinion that this situation is not going to escalate to TOTAL WAR. Thus, we believe it is unnecessary. Also, we already have well-established military which definitely can win against N.K.'s 1950 military.
      While, situations that happened during past months convinced most of Korean people to deploy THAAD system to our nation.

    After watching the video of people's response to the missile launch, I had the exact same question of whether the country at large would want to re-militarize. Lo and behold, it's like you guys read my mind.
    I think my favourite response was the woman saying, "People should only vote for re-militarization if they are willing to go to war themselves. If that's the case, change the law." I think it is largely the case that those in favour of a robust military don't generally envision themselves serving in it. They want to be protected, not to throw themselves in the line of fire. But a military is more than just a meat shield for the people--they are the people, and it's a very grave thing to take that for granted.
    I also agree with a couple of the interviewees that war isn't the answer. I am largely against war, and think my own country spends far too much investing in the military.
    Ultimately, I think it should be the Japanese who make the decision, though. I'm interested to see what happens next.

    I think re-militarization is necessary to an extent for Japan to defend themselves if an attack does occur. As history has shown, over reliance on other countries to fend for you in times of crisis has not been very successful. Those that do not learn from history are bound to repeat it. Just my two cents worth.

      I think you are the one who needs to think a little bit more about the situation. It's very easy to cower behind another country (U.S) and allow them to do all the dirty work for you all while showing the hypocrisy by calling out "world peace" or the "gravity" behind the situation . However, what will happen if U.S decides to give the big middle finger or U.S simply can't afford to look over Japan at a given time? Do you actually believe these guys you saw are going to be prepared to successfully fight back and defend themselves?
      There is no battle that can be won with defense alone. You at least need a counter attack and no matter how you look at it, it's still an offensive attack. Simply fighting off attackers (even if strongly successful) and not putting an end to the enemy will only give them opportunity to recollect themselves and try again until successful. I'm not saying Japan should go and start invading countries and doing horrific things again like in their past history. However, Japan is an easy target waiting to be taken without America. Look at their men as you can see the fear in one of the guy's faces when even mentioning dying for the country that they live so comfortably in.
      That is exactly why that woman said what she said and she is correct. Whether she is actually brave enough to join the military or not is irrelevant and you are only trying to use a overused tactic of destroying her credibility to disregard her statement which was indeed true. The Japanese have become soft.

    I am a bit taken aback by the militaristic girl, who on one hand says "I don't worry. The US will squash them if they try anything" (I am paraphrasing) and on the other hand approves of re-militarization because "People need to be taught the meaning of human life" (again paraphrasing).
    I am going to be a bit blunt, but ... she talks nonsense.
    First of all the pretext for re-militarization is actually the worry that the US may not be able - or willing - to protect Japan in case of an ICBM attack. Not creating some kind of "inspiration camp" for the Japanese youth.
    And secondly, what is wrong with dying from overwork - especially while doing something you like ? There are a millions of ways to die an anonymous, miserable death in a war. The heroic ending is not for everyone, ever since technology is involved.

    As a South Korean, I have very complicated feelings about the re-militarization of Japan. As South Korea and Japan share same level of threats from North Korea, I understand Japan's motivation for re-militarization. At the same time, due to historical and ongoing conflicts between the Koreans and the Japanese, I'm doubtful about what Japan will do in the future with its real army. Finally, in person, I feel bad to my Japanese friends as their peace and quality of life can be undermined by participating in the global conflicts with their own military.
    But basically I believe that we need to respect the decision of the Japanese people because no single country has the rights to intervene other country's security issues. (China should understand it, yeah?) Moreover, despite our widespread distrust about the Japanese government, I also believe rationality of the democratized Japanese people and that they will protest the possible military conflicts between Korea and Japan.

    I'm from the States and I can't imagine us ever trying to de-militarize, but I think it'd be a bit precarious for the Japanese to militarize. Several countries, such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland (minus Cod wars), etc, have stuck to peaceful neutrality, much to the benefit of their nation. Militarizing is costly and other nations will perceive you as a threat, which dictates further fear and spending. My advice is that if the opportunity is provided to a nation, they should stay out of the rat race and enjoy a nice peaceful life.

    Where do Japanese get the idea they are paying the USA? Three cost of having based in Japan is enormous. So, I went and did some research. Japan pays into something called the Common Defense fund. There is a lot of different ways of calculating the expense and a lot of figures thrown about by politicians for which I cannot find documentation. But back in 2004, it was estimated by the Japanese government that they spent 4.4 billion in to the Common Defense Fund, but the same year the US government said the cost of supporting our bases in Japan was 5.2 billion dollars. An estimate on what it would cost Japan to supply similar defense on its own was placed at about 120 billion (based on having to purchase all the armaments and infrastructure and train all the personnel needed). So, in a way, Japan is getting a bargain with US forces. But let's remember, the US built those bases as a eastern defense wall against the Soviets and Communist China. It's not unreasonable for the Japanese to evaluate whether there is a need for us to be there any longer. But with China's recent encroachment on the South China Seas, they may want us there.

      Japan pays a hosting budget that is apportioned out of the Japanese Defense Budget by the Cabinet ministers on an annual basis. Japan directly and indirectly pays the United States to station forces in country, as well as paying civilian contractors who work and supplies the bases and soldiers. Also, consider that the US is the predominate supplier of Japan's military weaponry. What we pay to station forces there is more than compensated by Japan's purchases of AEGIS, the F-35A, the E-2D, and their joint collaboration on BMD.

    A lot of Japanese scholars and specialists working in strategic fields have voiced that there isn't much chance of Japan remilitarising or constitutional amendments as opposed to many neighbouring Asian states' concerns. They pointed out Japanese' perceptions of its security planning have always been ultimately based on the U.S.-Japan alliance and Article 9. Plus, concerns surrounding Japan's militarism are primarily derived from historical traumas or grievances, rather than realistic insight into how Japanese politics works.

    So pretty much you have a bunch of cowards that would't protect there way of life or family in a war but would much rather have american and some joint forces do it.
    Not using that as a bad thing, Americans are a very war hungry people.
    That old lady said it best though.
    I don't think they should get nukes to protect themselves since the usa will do it for them at no cost but i think they should build the ground,air,sea military up to at least fighting level

      just google military spending and you'll find Japan is 8th in the world for 2016 (over 40 billion USD) for military spending. Why does people make it sound like Japan has no military? Tell me how the 8th spender in the world is not up to fighting level...... It's just called the defence force and not allowed to be deployed overseas due to the treaty.

      They have a defensive military (JSDF) and they pay the US for military support. So saying they are "cowards who don't defend themselves" or that the US does everything "for free" is a blatant falsehood.

      Japan's bill for 2017 for military support is 5.5 billion USD, which is less than 15% of their military spending last year... Which is close to Germany and still more than south korea

      Michael Pharr, it's all part of the deal. Are you implying that Americans dont know how to keep to a contract?
      US defends Japan and in return the US gets land in Japan to add their the US ability to project global power. Also US stationing equipment in Japan is 30-40% cheaper then it would be to house them in the US. US is powerful because the US can reach out and touch any place in the globe in matter of days. US is benefiting from the Japan/US agreement as much as Japan is. It is a give and take deal.

    I feel like, in industrialized countries there are generally very few people who still share the old idea to defend or even die for their country; especially among young people this idea is rather considered as outworn and out-dated...whether this is good or not is another question to ask but in general I think it led to a more peaceful coexistence...but again, this is mainly for industrialized countries and that's by far not the whole world.
