If you are curious about what's really happening not just in Japan but the rest of Asia, you should watch other videos of ours for the most authentic insight. If you want to become our volunteer reporter to represent your country (in Asia for now), get in touch with us at askasianboss@gmail.com. Stay safe, everybody!
I'm an American and a Trump supporter. It's easy for me to support military action against North Korea but, I don't feel right backing up something that really won't effect my life the way it would surrounding countries. Your video with the people in Japan on this helped so much! Any chance we could hear South Koreans or people from China on this subject?
You guys should do a segment interviewing the protesters of the new American base they're building in Okinawa. I hear that it's just becoming another colony of the US fast and a lot of the elderly are against it while the youths are indifferent. It's kind of linked to this NKorea "threat" as well. There's a lawsuit going on in the West Coast suing the American government on the building of the base as well as it supposedly damages the eco system and brings harm etc. even though the lawsuit is in trial, they have already begun building the base. I think it'd be interesting to ask if Okinawans think they're becoming another territory of the US like Puerto Rico and compare Okinanwan opinion to other Japanese opinions in Tokyo or elsewhere. It'd also be interesting to ask if becoming a territory of the US is a possibility in their minds considering Puerto Rico, and the recent hurricane that has destroyed it and the lack of help they're actually getting from the Federal government-if they are for it or against (it's a stretch, but I think it's interesting to think about).
R. J. Nice propaganda mate. You show your lack of history knowledge by not acknowledging that Okinawa was a US territory until the 1970's. If the US wanted an Okinawan territory, they wouldn't have given it back.
If you militarize you usually make military service mandatory to all men, so there no such thing as volunteer just like south korea north korea and israel are all militarized countries and military is mandatory
This channel is just great. And it's important. I much prefer hearing what average citizens of other countries think about certain issues. Most politicians just lie and bloviate. The people that you find to interview are very thoughtful and considered with their words. I really admire Asians. Origato gozaimus!
i mean i'm not really against what you've just said but i could almost assure you that people around the world think alike. Thus its better to hear the figures of authority's bloated lies,, to draw out conclusions and think ahead.
Hey Asian Boss, "this is what the people of Japan think" but you are interviewing people in Tokyo only. Does this really represent Japanese people as a whole? I'm not too sure about that. What about the people of Hokkaido who had the missile passing over them? I'm curious about they have to say as well
Re-militarization/starting a war so that people value their lives again?! Is that woman out of her mind? Also "killing them selves over such small things" victims of karoshi (death by overwork) often work 100 hours of overtime/month and more, for several months. It's a serious problem and nothing to joke about.
pinkowarumono I also had an issue with that saying. I think she may be too privileged or naive to understand the harsh working conditions some people in her country face. Let alone understanding psychology.
Apparently there are some indications that there are less mental health problems during times of war. Not sure if that's mainly a matter of people having more important things to care about than reporting mental health issues, but it doesn't seem so far-fetched that many people might function better during times of war than during times of peace. The problem for _some_ war veterans appears to be not that they experienced terrible things during their war, but that modern civilian life seems devoid of meaning compared to working within a 'tribe' to keep everyone alive. I guess working for an employer to keep customers happy might not give the same feelings of being _connected_ to people?
Honestly I think that North Korea is not just a threat for japan but for the other countries too. If North Korea keep provoking America and Japan than a World war may broke out and the whole mankind has to pay the price. Therefore, it is very important that every country should take steps to stop North korea. My prayers and blessings are with japanese people. Love from India
I don't see a World War happening, who's gonna help N.Korea? Not even China or Russia would try to defend this country and it's establishment. Therefor, although with a lot of casualties, this war would end quick and swiftly. They have almost zero supplies to feed their army and population and they lack most modern equipment that countries such as America can and will use in combat.
Tell me when North Korea did provoke or threat America and the world ? Oh yes , they says it in USA media , so let's believe it .. STUPID PEOPLE you love wars and destroying other countries , zionists slaves
I read that if North Korea were to attack, there is reason to believe China would still back them up. Not in terms of providing more military power, but in economical support. If North Korea were to go down, large numbers of North Koreans will flock over to China to seek refuge. This will bring on immense stress in the Chinese economy and risk internal instability. Because of this I believe China would still have to back North Korea regardless what they do. The biggest influential factor whether North Korea does wage a nuclear war will be China. Just my two cents.
May I ask what's reason it is that China will back them? I only see reasons why CCP won't back them, e.g rest of the world against them including Russia + CCP does not does not want NK to have nukes + CCP only cares about CCP. Why would you pump money into a war that has no chance of doing any damage to the US short of nuclear warheads + maybe destroy Seoul. If NK decides to detonate a few nuclear warheads in the atmosphere (before US defence systems can shoot them down) the whole of Asia has a giant problem. I'll mention again CCP only cares about CCP!
Your prayers should be with the North Korean people, Japan is ranked 8th in the WORLD in military spending for 2016 at 46 billion USD, that's more that South Korea.....
The point of view of that girl in face mask really threatened me. People suiciding because of "little" things should not become the reason why you are for the re-militarization
YALL ARE FUCKING STUPID AND DUMB AS HELL! She's saying people are not going to do anything about anything unless something happens. She's not saying that is the solution because there is no appreciation in life! She's saying Japan is too peace full for that. Its sadly true, you can say "I want to kms" but if someone is trying to kill you then you start to appreciate yourself and run not that you should go out and kill.
Perhaps from your perspective, it seems like that. She's actually taking a very pragmatic approach to it. She's saying that Japanese people are so peaceful and lulled into a country built on a pacifist mindset that they are blinded to the harsh reality of the world around them. Whether from Karoshi or hikikomori, people in Japan today are too preoccupied by their tiny world and can't seem to open their eyes. She's not saying "Rearm to get people to stop killing themselves over petty things" but "forcing people to rethink Japan's pacifist views will cause them to open and look around and see that the world is so much bigger than them, that their issues are genuinely small and not to waste their life."
poortaiwanese the high suicide rate is not as high as you think. Check the data. They also dont have low deaths with recreational drugs, road tolls and murder. Overall the country is very sane unike medicated and drugged USA
As a Filipino , i think Japan should militarized and prepare for the worse , China is much more of a threat now that they begun their presence to expand in Asia. This isn't the age of Imperialism or Medieval.
Japan and Germany should be allowed to have it's own military. The old people after world war 2 putting those rules in place in their constitutions had no idea what the world would be like 70 years later
I am in favor of Japan's militarisation for only one reason. Japan needs to be independent from the US. Relying on other countries to protect your existence is just wrong. As for imperialism, that's another story.
The girl with the mask makes quite an interesting point imo - I've expirienced this because I live in Ukraine, which is, at the present moment, in a state of undeclared war with Russia and there are less and less suicide happenings (at least in the media). There are some positive moments in remilitarization of Japan, because as practise has shwon us - you can't rely on other countries to provide security for your homeland (USA nad Russia were supposed to be guarantees of Ukraine keeping its territories in exchange for ban of nuclear weapon research and manufacture in Ukraine and just look at what happened). So I personally feel that Japan should remilitarize, but it must be done very carefully and cautiously to prevetn the abuse of this idea by politicians - it should be first and foremost done in order to protect Japan's nation and not to fuel some politician's personal urges.
As an Asian American, I have been to Japan many times and I like the Japanese culture very much. However, I think Japan's re-militarization will be disastrous for Asian people. We have all witnessed what Japan had done 100 years ago and we don't want that to happen again. I think using the missile threat from North Korea as a supporting ground for Japan's re-militarization is weak. The North Korean Missile threat has certainly been exaggerated by those LDP Militarists.
Bruh, The modern Japan is completely different of the imperial Japanese of the WW2. You shouldn’t worry about re-militarization because it’s no like they gonna invade again, Currently Japan is a peaceful and democratic nation, the army is just purely for self defense.
Never touched on this kind of subject before, but im gonna light the fire and say that Japan could try strengthen its defense force but they *should* never intervene an conflict or another nation.
HDose that's waht many Japanese are worried about. For now abe want to militarize just for difference propose but maybe in the future this military will have to go to war and we would never want that
I’m Japanese. I think we should have military to avoid war. Not having military doesn’t just mean that we can avoid war . And also having military doesn’t just mean that we will do war. Military is not only to attack, but also to avoid war
I can definitely tell they are generally more well informed but i dont know if you can compare the U.S to Japan considering California the state is bigger then the entire of Japan.
But you don't know how the interviews are conducted. If they ask people who aren't really sure, they're not going to bother showing them, are they? How do you know they didn't ask 5-6 people in between every one person they interviewed? They're being selective and you shouldn't just assume that this is a valid representation of the Japanese population as a whole.
It's really ironic with the one young woman suggesting that military conflict would reduce suicides given the IJ forces notable history of suicidal attacks • Banzai charge • Kamikaze • Kaiten (human torpedoes) • Seppuku Maybe instead of suggesting militarism, it would be better to look at the current work culture / social culture in Japan along with issues of depression / clinical depression which affects many many people worldwide
I actually don't mind that people don't want to re-militarize, most of them just want peace. However all those young people who would refuse to fight to protect their country is sort of pathetic. My country is not a country of war, militarism or Nationalism but I and just about anyone I know and had such a conversation with would have no issue fighting should we be attacked, even if it was a war we could not win if it made sure children, elderly and women could flee. I know that's not politically correct to say but I think it is the minimal duty one should have to his or even her homeland.
Why would Japan need a military that is more than for self defensive purposes? There is no reason when dealing with N. Korean issue. What, so now they want an invasion force?
Re-militarizing Japan is definitely a interesting topic, it’s also something we should discuss lightly. We all saw what happened when Japan was a militarized state.
Girl with mask spoke facts. Peace makes weak ppl>weak ppl make hard times>hard times make strong ppl> strong ppl make peace time> peace makes weak people and the cycle of life continues.
Not peace itself. It's the luxury and decadence that peace affords that rots society. If people were more spiritual and less inclined towards pleasure seeking in times of peace this wouldn't happen.
I'm American and I even have an ancestor who did the "Bataan Walk" and I say Japan SHOULD have it's own defenses and SHOULD have the final word on when to defend itself. The Japanese people today ARE NOT the ones who brutalized Asia 80 some years ago.
Well, that's why things were put in place to prevent that. Japan DOES have its own defense. It's called the self-defense forces. Also, they do have the word on when to defend itself. They just recently reinterpreted a part of their constitution for collective self-defense
EJ K - Same thing with the South Koreans too and what they did during the Vietnam war. They still celebrate their participation but quietly. There was once an activist who was gonna hold an event to educate the local Korean populace, but South Korean veterans said they were gonna respond violently, so the event didn't happen.
After watching the video of people's response to the missile launch, I had the exact same question of whether the country at large would want to re-militarize. Lo and behold, it's like you guys read my mind. I think my favourite response was the woman saying, "People should only vote for re-militarization if they are willing to go to war themselves. If that's the case, change the law." I think it is largely the case that those in favour of a robust military don't generally envision themselves serving in it. They want to be protected, not to throw themselves in the line of fire. But a military is more than just a meat shield for the people--they are the people, and it's a very grave thing to take that for granted. I also agree with a couple of the interviewees that war isn't the answer. I am largely against war, and think my own country spends far too much investing in the military. Ultimately, I think it should be the Japanese who make the decision, though. I'm interested to see what happens next.
I believe Japan should have the ability to at least land a viable expeditionary force. Perhaps the size of one division fully equipped + complete logistical support as well. They need to give China reason to pause!
I am deeply inspired by the courage and determination of Japan. It's kinda incredible how they went through a lot after destruction of Heroshima & Nagasaki but still managed to rise up again and rock the world. This is how a great nation is like who knows to build castles from ashes. The hard work & sincerity of Japanese is exemplary and a role model for all of us.Whatever they do, they THINK regarding all aspects unlike other countries blinded by proud of power. There is a lot to learn from Japan..... Huge Love and Respect for Japan from the depth of my heart :)
Your forgetting the point Japans only peaceful because of the american military bases there. Take them away China will take advantage of the situation LOL.
Of course,Japan should change the constitution. But it doesn't mean re-militarization, Japan has already militarized by JDF. Japan hasn't changed the constitution from over 70 years. All thing which are made by human has to be maintained in a certain period. The article 9, this is great article. If the all nations has article 9, the world may become peaceful. But it doesn't work by just one nation. Because the nation which will attack Japan has no obligation to concern the article 9.
As a South Korean, I have very complicated feelings about the re-militarization of Japan. As South Korea and Japan share same level of threats from North Korea, I understand Japan's motivation for re-militarization. At the same time, due to historical and ongoing conflicts between the Koreans and the Japanese, I'm doubtful about what Japan will do in the future with its real army. Finally, in person, I feel bad to my Japanese friends as their peace and quality of life can be undermined by participating in the global conflicts with their own military. But basically I believe that we need to respect the decision of the Japanese people because no single country has the rights to intervene other country's security issues. (China should understand it, yeah?) Moreover, despite our widespread distrust about the Japanese government, I also believe rationality of the democratized Japanese people and that they will protest the possible military conflicts between Korea and Japan.
Japan is a whole different country of the imperial Japanese of WW2. You shouldn’t worry about re-militarization, it’s not like they gonna invade again, but to protect themselves from serious threats like China, North Korea or Russia.
I'm from the States and I can't imagine us ever trying to de-militarize, but I think it'd be a bit precarious for the Japanese to militarize. Several countries, such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland (minus Cod wars), etc, have stuck to peaceful neutrality, much to the benefit of their nation. Militarizing is costly and other nations will perceive you as a threat, which dictates further fear and spending. My advice is that if the opportunity is provided to a nation, they should stay out of the rat race and enjoy a nice peaceful life.
Japan should stop depending on America and should create a powerful army of it's own, because depending on another nation to protect you own nation is just irresponsible and idiotic. That nation is only going to protect a country when it affects their own country. As an Indian I support Japan and I am very thankful to the Japanese imperial army for helping Nataji Subhash Chandra Bose and India fight for it's freedom.
Go, Japan _!_ If country dosen't have military that is not country. All the country have right for preserve to their land. I know Japan is good and north korea is evil. this is truth. So, I believe that if korea attack by north korea, Japan will send military for south korea. / From south korea
If only we could live in a world where more people could say, "Serving in the military is something I've never experienced. So it's something that I just can't imagine."
I think all these talks about re-militarization are nonsense. In terms of overall capabilities, Japanese self defense force is probably ranked second in Asia(barring nuclear weapons). Japan has started re-militarization after the outbreak of Korean war.
Japan's deployed overseas, first in PKO capacity and then in Iraq. What Japan needs to do, and they have actually done it, is to loosen the restrictions on weapons use. Before, they couldn't fire back at an enemy unless the enemy was actively shooting at them. It didn't matter if the enemy was shooting at Australians next to the Japanese. The law prevented them from returning fire unless a Japanese soldier came under attack. It further prevented them from providing convoy cover for any non-Japanese citizen or vehicle unless within narrowly defined parameters and only outside of an active warzone. It's not that they have zero experience, they just were handtied.
Please do this interview with more rural people. Around the world, the people that generally sign up for the military are not from the city. Also, please interview people that are most likely to fight other than college students and women. Overall, I think this was a poor selection of people to ask.
College age men and women are the ones likeliest to fight because that's the general "recruiting age" that militaries target. We have men in the US registering for the draft when you turn 18 (goes up to 35). Literally, if the need came, those guys would be the first people pulled for duty and training.
The Koreans and Chinese down here in the comments can't seem to let go of WW2. A lot of time has passed, and both Japan and the world have changed a lot. Considering the present circumstances, I think it is better for Japan if they were more prepared to deal with North Korean aggression - and if they must re-militarize, then so be it. This is coming from a Filipino.
Goy Provat because Japan has never apologise for nor admit to their war crimes and atrocities openly, explicitly unlike the Germans. I'm sure the Chinese and Koreans will be more than happy to forgive and forget once Japan apologise and not to read between the lines to get an apology.
Goy Provat Exactly. I haven't seen or heard of a Filipino still hating on Spanish or Americans. It is still part of their history, however they should just let go of the hate or grudge. The Japanese have already asked for apologies. The mistakes of the past shouldn't be burdened by the people of the present.
Jing Yuan Qiu I'm pretty sure that Japan already apologised to China and Korea. It's just that schools from both countries still teach the younger generations to hold grudge of the past. There should be healing.
No Way maybe you should educate yourself on Abe's speech made during war anniversary and how some right winged politicians denying the Nanking massacre. A simple Google search for news articles does the job yeah
I think its ok to let them rearm but the US has to get the hell out of Japan. If they try fight they'll can get crushed on their own. Its also pointless to want to fight them anyways. Its just tiny island across an ocean. They stay there and we stay here and everything will be ok.
Another great video from Asian Boss. In China, at least where I live, further inland, many Chinese are very emotional about Japan doing anything like changing Article 9. I want to show this video to my students to get some reactions.
It would be a good idea for Japan to remilitarize. That way, Japan could increase its defensive capabilities and also be able to come to the aid of its allies. It’s unfortunate that regional developments are forcing Japan in this direction, but this is reality.
As an Asian whose country was invaded by Japan during WW2, I think Japan should re-militarize. Re-militarize to a degree that they can project force in the surrounding areas in Asia for an invasion, but not to a degree where they can maintain an occupation, etc. The Japanese now aren't the same Japanese then, and I think they have proven to be a trustworthy nation in these modern times.
As a chinese, I actually support militarise Japan. But I hope this militarisation is a real militarisation. Not some troops that directly affiliated to the marine of a certan country (you know which country it is). LOL
I am a bit taken aback by the militaristic girl, who on one hand says "I don't worry. The US will squash them if they try anything" (I am paraphrasing) and on the other hand approves of re-militarization because "People need to be taught the meaning of human life" (again paraphrasing). I am going to be a bit blunt, but ... she talks nonsense. First of all the pretext for re-militarization is actually the worry that the US may not be able - or willing - to protect Japan in case of an ICBM attack. Not creating some kind of "inspiration camp" for the Japanese youth. And secondly, what is wrong with dying from overwork - especially while doing something you like ? There are a millions of ways to die an anonymous, miserable death in a war. The heroic ending is not for everyone, ever since technology is involved.
I think re-militarization is necessary to an extent for Japan to defend themselves if an attack does occur. As history has shown, over reliance on other countries to fend for you in times of crisis has not been very successful. Those that do not learn from history are bound to repeat it. Just my two cents worth.
Right, but Japan did learn from history when they demilitarized after a horrible war.. as a Japanese growing up hearing stories about world war 2 I have pride in article 9 and its depressing that we're in a situation to even have to consider remilitarization. Maybe it's time the word learns war is bad
Wars does horrible things to people just like the grandma in this video said. Usually the results are shown generations after generations. These men are not cowards or less a man for saying they dont want to serve in the military. I think everyone should enjoy this life of its fullest while staying here. Awesome work once again Asian Boss!
Hi. First of all, I am from South Korea. One of the small political party, whose stance is far-right, is trying to adopt that TNW to our mlitary. But, Korean people are not eager to do anything that might cause more devastation and catastrophe. Most of the Korean people have opinion that this situation is not going to escalate to TOTAL WAR. Thus, we believe it is unnecessary. Also, we already have well-established military which definitely can win against N.K.'s 1950 military. While, situations that happened during past months convinced most of Korean people to deploy THAAD system to our nation.
You are TOTALLY WRONG 'Liberty Korea Party' , you said 'One of the small political party', is one of the two major political parties in south korea. it has 107/299 seats in congress. while the other major political party has 121/299 seats. Lots of korean want TNW. A recent survey showed almost 70% of korean want TNW. your mention shows not the fact but your political favor.
sevenmix The party that impeached president was in? I must say you are right about the numbers. It is true that they are one of the major parties in that regard. But I also believe that they are toothless after impeachment. Sorry about the expression that might mislead. According to realmeter's survey it showed that 49.3% of the people are in favor of No.1 party while only 18.4% supported that toothless party.
another full of your political favor. constitution give them term of 4 years. whatever you believe they are second largest political party and gov. do nothing without them which make you sad ^^ anyway people in korea want TNW. that's true Tell the truth not the your wish
I always do research and inform myself on current news. Not trying to experience ignorant bliss like some of my fellow peers in the US. Definitely harder to find people without brainwashed views here in the US due to the media brainwashing
Comparing something to the "average American" is kind of a mute point. Averages make for bad representations of data with high standard deviation, and America is the most diverse place in the world. America has a mixture of successful cultures for the information age and unsuccessful cultures. The unsuccessful cultures will die out over time. The point is, taking an average of these has a poor relationship with reality.
As an American, I would welcome our Japanese brothers and sisters to the warrior family. These kids don't seem to realize just how tough they can be. I only support militarization because I believe in the morals of our allie. Japanese people have proven that they don't take fighting lightly, and that they have grown in their overall wish for peaceful coexistence. Japan is not the expansionist imperialists they once where.
Where do Japanese get the idea they are paying the USA? Three cost of having based in Japan is enormous. So, I went and did some research. Japan pays into something called the Common Defense fund. There is a lot of different ways of calculating the expense and a lot of figures thrown about by politicians for which I cannot find documentation. But back in 2004, it was estimated by the Japanese government that they spent 4.4 billion in to the Common Defense Fund, but the same year the US government said the cost of supporting our bases in Japan was 5.2 billion dollars. An estimate on what it would cost Japan to supply similar defense on its own was placed at about 120 billion (based on having to purchase all the armaments and infrastructure and train all the personnel needed). So, in a way, Japan is getting a bargain with US forces. But let's remember, the US built those bases as a eastern defense wall against the Soviets and Communist China. It's not unreasonable for the Japanese to evaluate whether there is a need for us to be there any longer. But with China's recent encroachment on the South China Seas, they may want us there.
Japan pays a hosting budget that is apportioned out of the Japanese Defense Budget by the Cabinet ministers on an annual basis. Japan directly and indirectly pays the United States to station forces in country, as well as paying civilian contractors who work and supplies the bases and soldiers. Also, consider that the US is the predominate supplier of Japan's military weaponry. What we pay to station forces there is more than compensated by Japan's purchases of AEGIS, the F-35A, the E-2D, and their joint collaboration on BMD.
That girl who said, Japanese people became soft and people should learn tough life through militarization, is the dumbest person I've seen for a while. She has no idea how lethal modern weapons are... Perhaps she is the first one to volunteer when it happens? I doubt it...
S.K. Yu I agree, I mean I understand how Japanese citizens are committing suicide because of workplace stress but that doesn't mean starting a war is a good method to make them value their lives. East Asian countries in general don't place much importance to mental health and support which is why suicide is so common there.
I think you are the one who needs to think a little bit more about the situation. It's very easy to cower behind another country (U.S) and allow them to do all the dirty work for you all while showing the hypocrisy by calling out "world peace" or the "gravity" behind the situation . However, what will happen if U.S decides to give the big middle finger or U.S simply can't afford to look over Japan at a given time? Do you actually believe these guys you saw are going to be prepared to successfully fight back and defend themselves? There is no battle that can be won with defense alone. You at least need a counter attack and no matter how you look at it, it's still an offensive attack. Simply fighting off attackers (even if strongly successful) and not putting an end to the enemy will only give them opportunity to recollect themselves and try again until successful. I'm not saying Japan should go and start invading countries and doing horrific things again like in their past history. However, Japan is an easy target waiting to be taken without America. Look at their men as you can see the fear in one of the guy's faces when even mentioning dying for the country that they live so comfortably in. That is exactly why that woman said what she said and she is correct. Whether she is actually brave enough to join the military or not is irrelevant and you are only trying to use a overused tactic of destroying her credibility to disregard her statement which was indeed true. The Japanese have become soft.
Well now that the election is over, it’s clear that majority of us (Japanese) wanted the amendment of the article 9. It’s really not the matter of who wants to go to war or not. It’s necessary to show the neighboring countries that Japan can fight. I would really appreciate if you could work on making more unbiased videos.
It's quite ironic old pre ww2 Japan had a feared and dedicated military willing to die for there country and never surrender. They refused to be bullied and they were one of the last Axis powers standing and even we, the Americans, rather have dropped experimental weapons indiscriminately destroying 2 cities and millions of other lives causing a massive tragedy than sent foot on japanese soil and face their military because we knew they would never surrender and surely end many more of our soldiers lives. But now the average citizens are not willing to defend their nation with their lives or otherwise and would rather hide behind other countries. I would be happy if japan's army was restored to even 1% of its former greatness and nobility.
I don't think that's just Japan, you could probably go to any country, even America and a majority of the civilians would likely say the same. You could call them pacifists, I think it's just a result of our more interconnected world, people just not being able to justify war like we used to pre-internet era. It's really not a terrible problem to have, in-fact you could look at this and say it's a good thing, and may lead to a more peaceful world in the future.
Japan does have a military, the "self defense forces". They couldn't use it for war, only defense because the US said so after they neutered Japan in ww2. In 2014, however, Japan amended their constitution giving them more freedom to use the military. But it's mainly for show, since the US protects them.
The JSDF is still a famed and dedicated military willing to die for their country. In many aspects it is a more formidable force than the imperial Japanese army ever was. You are mistaking indoctrination and fanaticism for determination and patriotism.
wrong. Japan tells me that I surrender to America many times. It was America that kept refusing it. I wanted to experiment with atomic bombs using Japanese people. Although it is still common now, the United States at that time was a crazy country beyond the Nazi regime.
Japan hasn't amended its constitution since its inception in 1947. You're mistaking what Abe passed in 2015, which is a government reinterpretation of the term "self-defense" to include "Collective Self-Defense". Reinterpretations allow the government to stretch what the law defines without having to go through the Diet and then subject it to a national referendum requiring 2/3 consent by the public.
Sad that most people in Japan forgets that their constitution is written by Allies. I believe they should change their constitution written for themselves. Starting wars and militarization is not the same thing. Training in the military teaches not just to point and kill but teaches discipline, going against nature fury aka "survival skills," Language and Educational skills. When I went to Toyko, Japan everybody were glued to their phone. If I was fit for duty, I would definitely be in the military hiking.
I know it may be interesting to watch japanese people's reactions to those threads, but shouldn't you rather ask some professionals on what should the country actually do? citizens normally know shit about what actually happens...
Gotta agree with the girl that says if America goes you war with DPRK then Japan should be going with us. Why is it only American soldiers that should be required to die for protecting our allies? All our allies that are directly affected by this potentially devastating war should be willing like American men and women to lay down their lives to protect their allies, interests, and countries as well.
So pretty much you have a bunch of cowards that would't protect there way of life or family in a war but would much rather have american and some joint forces do it. Not using that as a bad thing, Americans are a very war hungry people. That old lady said it best though. I don't think they should get nukes to protect themselves since the usa will do it for them at no cost but i think they should build the ground, air, sea military up to at least fighting level
just google military spending and you'll find Japan is 8th in the world for 2016 (over 40 billion USD) for military spending. Why does people make it sound like Japan has no military? Tell me how the 8th spender in the world is not up to fighting level...... It's just called the defence force and not allowed to be deployed overseas due to the treaty.
They have a defensive military (JSDF) and they pay the US for military support. So saying they are "cowards who don't defend themselves" or that the US does everything "for free" is a blatant falsehood.
Japan's bill for 2017 for military support is 5.5 billion USD, which is less than 15% of their military spending last year... Which is close to Germany and still more than south korea
Michael Pharr, it's all part of the deal. Are you implying that Americans dont know how to keep to a contract? US defends Japan and in return the US gets land in Japan to add their the US ability to project global power. Also US stationing equipment in Japan is 30-40% cheaper then it would be to house them in the US. US is powerful because the US can reach out and touch any place in the globe in matter of days. US is benefiting from the Japan/US agreement as much as Japan is. It is a give and take deal.
Japan has changed so much they went from one of the best warriors in the world with honor respect to these hentai lovers that refuse to fight for their own country, pretty sad.
Jen P. Mitts bro war is how we got so far if we never went to war with Nazi Germany what would've happen then you should be grateful for the soldiers that died for you to be where you are I'm American and I'm forever grateful for my country and people and I'll die for it any day to eliminate evil from the people I love and care.
What an ignorant point of view. Japan isn't going around the 🌎 complicating things. We ( America) have the biggest and best military in the world and have been in a perpetual state of war for centuries.
Having a Military force DOES NOT mean you will be going war, it provides an additional layer of security. When natural disasters happen who is first to help? The Military! Yes a Military force is first and foremost designed for fighting but having the capability to do something and actually doing it are two vastly different things. Good soldiers aren't just soldiers, they're people too. Whatever Abe's intentions are, if they conflict with that of the people's then it will be that moment that decides the future. There is a MAJOR difference between being able to protect yourself and being a bully. A good Military force true to their laurels does not consist of bullies.
Thank you very much for the great series of interviews to pick up honest voices from ordinary people in China, Korea, and Japan.
El Nayzo You are bad at this. Maybe find a new job.
Great video. The lady who commented "those who want remilitarize are not the people who are going to volunteer to serve" is spot on.
Yeah you don't want to put it in place and have to draft people in, you wouldn't be doing much like that.
ram rod That is always how it is... the ones farthest from the front are always the ones talking tough and rattling the saber..so to speak.
_"Old men start wars, but young men fight them"_
I was thinking the same. And for the young lady that believes that Japan should militarize, I wonder if she would be willing to serve?
If you militarize you usually make military service mandatory to all men, so there no such thing as volunteer just like south korea north korea and israel are all militarized countries and military is mandatory
You should also interview people in the country side, and not only in urban center. Their opinion is usally different :)
Clément37 now that's kind of interesting actually. 2 different types of interviews
Correct
I agree
Clément37 Truth!
Strongly agree that all interviews should include both city and country people. I like your work Asian Boss.
How come all RUclips comments are just appalling except for on Asian boss videos where everyone's having a UN Security Council meeting up in here
XD
Asian Boss hits a different target audience.
This channel encourages reflection and thinking on the issues. Idiots probably click away.
Best comment :D
Just love the grand mom
"People get more pro-war the farther they are from the front lines." - Yang Wenli
I see youre a man of culture as well
Big hug to lovely wise grandma. I don't wish to live in a post-war world either.
This channel is just great. And it's important. I much prefer hearing what average citizens of other countries think about certain issues. Most politicians just lie and bloviate. The people that you find to interview are very thoughtful and considered with their words. I really admire Asians. Origato gozaimus!
You spelled that wrong ありがとうございます。spelled arigatou gozaimasu
i mean i'm not really against what you've just said but i could almost assure you that people around the world think alike. Thus its better to hear the figures of authority's bloated lies,, to draw out conclusions and think ahead.
"People are killing themselves over small things because it's so peaceful."
1st world problems...actually tho
Rich Countries Problems
Rich Countries Problems
"I've personally experienced what is like to live in a post-war world , I dont want others to go through the same thing"--- real wisdom.
Hey Asian Boss, "this is what the people of Japan think" but you are interviewing people in Tokyo only. Does this really represent Japanese people as a whole? I'm not too sure about that. What about the people of Hokkaido who had the missile passing over them? I'm curious about they have to say as well
Camille Bft good point
and this place is looks like Shibuya the most YOLO kind place in Japan lol
Like 50% of Japan lives in Tokyo go google ot
50% of japanese dont live in tokyo wtf
I realize I'm here late, but they did a video after the first missile in Hokkaido.
And if they do go to war, would she be willing to be on the front line and risk her life?
Yea I lol'd at that, as if military veterans don't have some of the highest rates of mental illness on the planet.
You didn`t understand her point.
Japanese had become too soft , can't believe they are successors of samurais
I really enjoy and value the insight that your videos give. Thank you for such a great channel!
The point of view of that girl in face mask really threatened me. People suiciding because of "little" things should not become the reason why you are for the re-militarization
Probably one of those people who want re-militarization but don't want to serve themselves. Talk is cheap. Especially for sideline-watching females.
That girl's answer just shocked me
poortaiwanese the high suicide rate is not as high as you think.
I agree with you as a South Korean
Japan and Germany should be allowed to have it's own military. The old people after world war 2 putting those rules in place in their constitutions had no idea what the world would be like 70 years later
I am in favor of Japan's militarisation for only one reason. Japan needs to be independent from the US. Relying on other countries to protect your existence is just wrong. As for imperialism, that's another story.
Cegesh Yup, I agree with you.
+Stella Fleuret Imperialism? Need I remind you what led up to the US occupation of Japan in the first place? Idiot.
+Cegesh Japan wants the US military in the region, you fucking libtard.
Stella Fleuret Don't give chance to crazy dog
U still alive bro?
Don't worry Japan, India will protect you
Abhay Achal protect yourself first
Japan don't that. Keep that to yourselves. Moreover Japan is Top-5 cleanest nation on earth. So no filth required.
Build more toilet
PEACE TO JAPAN. Lovely people
Great interviews. Captured great variety of ages and opinions and asked many questions. Erika did a great job.
Never touched on this kind of subject before, but im gonna light the fire and say that Japan could try strengthen its defense force but they *should* never intervene an conflict or another nation.
HDose that's waht many Japanese are worried about. For now abe want to militarize just for difference propose but maybe in the future this military will have to go to war and we would never want that
Great discussion and reassuring about the honesty of the people in the street.
Raise your hand if you also were utterly yet pleasantly surprised of Erika's English ability!
I’m Japanese.
I think we should have military to avoid war.
Not having military doesn’t just mean that we can avoid war .
And also having military doesn’t just mean that we will do war.
Military is not only to attack, but also to avoid war
"Would you be able to die for your country?"...No!😂😂😂Man i feel you no war please
great channel, as an american i like seeing peoples real opinions not filtered through our corporate news.
Japanese people always amaze me on how well informed they each are.
Jonathon Washington well if a bomb goes over your country twice in last two weeks you would think u would pay close attention, no? ^^
Be Attentive I think he meant it in general
I can definitely tell they are generally more well informed but i dont know if you can compare the U.S to Japan considering California the state is bigger then the entire of Japan.
But you don't know how the interviews are conducted. If they ask people who aren't really sure, they're not going to bother showing them, are they? How do you know they didn't ask 5-6 people in between every one person they interviewed? They're being selective and you shouldn't just assume that this is a valid representation of the Japanese population as a whole.
Gaming Authority look up the video on if Americans know where N. Korea is in the map. It is hilarious.
It's really ironic with the one young woman suggesting that military conflict would reduce suicides given the IJ forces notable history of suicidal attacks
• Banzai charge
• Kamikaze
• Kaiten (human torpedoes)
• Seppuku
Maybe instead of suggesting militarism, it would be better to look at the current work culture / social culture in Japan along with issues of depression / clinical depression which affects many many people worldwide
Love this channel.
Woman wearing a mask straight up sounds like an anime villain lol
I just want to say that your translations for the subtitles are exceptional
Please grow out of your edgy phase. Sending people off to war isn’t an answer.
As a Chinese, I would like to see Japan re-militarized. It is going to fun.
They'd stomp china a new mud hole.
They just recently reinterpreted a part of their constitution for collective self-defense
and they keep denied what their county did.
Bataan walk? The death march.thats how we call it. From philippines here.
dustin lee : Yep, that's the one. Japanese civilians today aren't the ones who did all that, is what I meant.
EJ K - Same thing with the South Koreans too and what they did during the Vietnam war. They still celebrate their participation but quietly. There was once an activist who was gonna hold an event to educate the local Korean populace, but South Korean veterans said they were gonna respond violently, so the event didn't happen.
Always interesting!
One of your best videos yet. I like the interviewer - she asked good questions.
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it..
Amazing. It's really nice to know the opinion of the japanese people about these tense facts. Great video.
I believe Japan should have the ability to at least land a viable expeditionary force. Perhaps the size of one division fully equipped + complete logistical support as well. They need to give China reason to pause!
Man shut up you fat yank. No one needs a war.
great job, erika and asian boss. keep them coming
Take them away China will take advantage of the situation LOL.
it always good to have the real opinion from people who really experice it, rather than only reading the news that already stirred by them.
Japan: Omae wa moe shinderu
Aerochalklate lmao
nani???!!!
You forget what the Japanese did to the US Navy Base in Hawaii
Trust me Japan remain complacent with peace you don’t want the burden of war.
Go, Japan _!_ If country dosen't have military that is not country. All the country have right for preserve to their land. I know Japan is good and north korea is evil.
this is truth. So, I believe that if korea attack by north korea, Japan will send military for south korea.
/ From south korea
감사합니다 한국어 친구! 북한이 당신을 공격한다면, 우리와 미국은 그들의 꽁초를 차 올릴 것입니다!
They have a large army, but have zero experience because the law prevents them from deploying, which is a big handicap.
I like that the video is longer!
I think that Japanese should say NO to the law that they never voted for but it's up to them.
I was surprised by Erika's English accent
As a chinese, I actually support militarise Japan. But I hope this militarisation is a real militarisation. Not some troops that directly affiliated to the marine of a certan country (you know which country it is). LOL
really freaks me out:“because we lost the war???”lol nah not really, young Japanese know nothing about the gravity of history
Great interview, very interesting opinions
I’m American ,, I think it’s time they milertize ,, it’s time they start taking care of their waters ,
Can we do an interview on Japanese and what their generation thinks of WWII? Is it true that the Japanese Govt covered up the atrocities?
That girl, says Japanese need a war, should go to battlefield first.
The world changes or Japan? What do you think sounds more realistic? Japan ofc. Goodluck changing the world buddy.
MrPyroguy1 true but fucking sad
Very sad indeed :(
meh, it seems like you forgot what happen you lose a world war, Japan deserves no military
Wars does horrible things to people just like the grandma in this video said. Usually the results are shown generations after generations. These men are not cowards or less a man for saying they dont want to serve in the military. I think everyone should enjoy this life of its fullest while staying here.
Awesome work once again Asian Boss!
I have a question, how do South Korean's nd Japanese feel about Donald Trumps idea of supplying "tatical nuclear weapons" to South Korea nd Japan??
Not a good idea. No need for additional nukes in East Asia!
You are TOTALLY WRONG 'Liberty Korea Party' , you said 'One of the small political party', is one of the two major political parties in south korea. it has 107/299 seats in congress. while the other major political party has 121/299 seats.
Lots of korean want TNW. A recent survey showed almost 70% of korean want TNW.
your mention shows not the fact but your political favor.
sevenmix
The party that impeached president was in?
I must say you are right about the numbers. It is true that they are one of the major parties in that regard. But I also believe that they are toothless after impeachment. Sorry about the expression that might mislead.
According to realmeter's survey it showed that 49.3% of the people are in favor of No.1 party while only 18.4% supported that toothless party.
another full of your political favor.
constitution give them term of 4 years. whatever you believe they are second largest political party and gov. do nothing without them which make you sad ^^
anyway people in korea want TNW. that's true Tell the truth not the your wish
Please Japan, you're so much fun the way you are, don't change and become an armed country.
No
They sound much smarter than your average AMERICAN.
That's because they are.
CjP americans are dumpest people in the world ,but not all of them .. bcz immigration are still there ...
They sound much smarter than your average RUSSIAN. And they don't abuse alcohol like your average RUSSIAN
4:29 Why tf Japan should get involved in a war if US declares war on North Korea? This logic literally doesn't make sense at all
If North Korea attacks Japan, the US will defend
As an American, I would welcome our Japanese brothers and sisters to the warrior family. These kids don't seem to realize just how tough they can be. I only support militarization because I believe in the morals of our allie. Japanese people have proven that they don't take fighting lightly, and that they have grown in their overall wish for peaceful coexistence. Japan is not the expansionist imperialists they once where.
great video!
What we pay to station forces there is more than compensated by Japan's purchases of AEGIS, the F-35A, the E-2D, and their joint collaboration on BMD.
erika is so cool! good job!!
By her saying commiting suicide over something insignificant like stress, that's an absolute insult
It's somewhat akin to a comic book's villain rhetoric on justifying war
S.K. Yu I was shocked she even said that.
Having played all fallout games,
I think im ready for a nuclear winter.
Finally for a sarcastic funny comment. The comment section is cancer honestly and a lot of misunderstandings
This channel should have 1Million Subs
このインタビュアーの女の子の話し方が子どもっぽくて嫌。今の憲法のせいで自衛隊のできることが少なくて、逆に非常に危険な立場であることわかってる?
I just LOVE the raw content
I know it may be interesting to watch japanese people's reactions to those threads, but shouldn't you rather ask some professionals on what should the country actually do? citizens normally know shit about what actually happens...
Stand up for yourself Japan! The world missed your BANZAI charge. All these anime and porn are making you passive.
3:26 Guys, we found the precursor of Apollyon
Japan has changed so much they went from one of the best warriors in the world with honor respect to these hentai lovers that refuse to fight for their own country, pretty sad.
Lost Nothing wrong with being a pacifist. War requires a soldier to murder people. That is a terrible thing to force someone to do.
We ( America) have the biggest and best military in the world and have been in a perpetual state of war for centuries.
yeah right! I don't think you're the one to fight as you're sitting behind a computer and just taking it easy as well
ram rod you're delusional lol
Having a Military force DOES NOT mean you will be going war, it provides an additional layer of security. When natural disasters happen who is first to help? The Military! Yes a Military force is first and foremost designed for fighting but having the capability to do something and actually doing it are two vastly different things. Good soldiers aren't just soldiers, they're people too. Whatever Abe's intentions are, if they conflict with that of the people's then it will be that moment that decides the future. There is a MAJOR difference between being able to protect yourself and being a bully. A good Military force true to their laurels does not consist of bullies.
