Yeah this is clearly a mental health thing with needing to do every step of things instead of just like sticking the mug in the microwave and nuking it.
@@brianskelly4979 Once I realized what the game was doing, I thought that was pretty clever how they incorporated that mechanic. In any other point-and-click game, you probably could just click the mug on the microwave and be done with it. But if you're struggling with executive dysfunction and/or depression, then yeah, going through every single step of opening the microwave, putting the cup in, closing it, starting the timer, waiting for the cup to finish, THEN taking it out is going to feel like a tedious slog just to accomplish one thing. Makes me kind of sad they seemed to miss that part of it, but I get that "slow-and-steady introspection" just wasn't the mood they were in and I can respect that.
I'm glad someone pointed it out and understood where the character was coming from.
I definitely see this coming from a depression/adhd thing. Like every small thing that happen can really set you off.

I'm not sure as it's only a hour-ish long game and I don't know the creator's intent, but this really seems like a story about a person suffering from executive dysfunction. It's a symptom that often accompanies depression and can make doing "mundane" or "normal" tasks very difficult mentally and emotionally. I appreciate that Carla was supportive and kind at the end there in spite of the difficult time she apparently had.

This is what I got out of it as well. The activley talking to himself and getting very overwhelmed over typically minute things seemed like it was trying to replicate that - but maybe I'm thinking too much into it
Yep. Funny, since Arin is actually very open about dealing with his ADHD, but didn't seem to "get" this one at all. Oh well, I can chalk it up to them not understanding beforehand the intent of the game, and approaching it as "quirky haha funni game" which, to be fair, it sort of is trying to be.

@@VSPhotfries to be completely fair I'm diagnosed with ADHD and depression and it got to the point where the constant talking/What If moments really irritated me. And that might be because I do that. It's annoying when youre in a good state of mind and not struggling, but when youre in it, it feels almost impossible to function. But I also get frustrated with real life minutae and hae ways to skip around stuff. idk as a game it doesnt really work unless you know the intent going in...
I like how Arin was in the kitchen, looked at all the items, clearly hovered over the cat food, and yet failed to find it and feed the cat.
I think he was using a guide, so he'd know that getting the food would be meaningless until you get far enough in the game to get the can opener. So he was never really looking. Just making conversation.
He audibly ponders when he's going to feed the cat while reading the guide. Since the guide didn't tell him he had to do it then, he didn't try to.
I like to think that's how he is at home and his cat has to spend five minutes using cat sign language to properly dirrect him.

I like how at 51:18 Dan's like "It just gets really heavy" like they didn't just watch someone almost have a complete emotional breakdown not five minutes prior.

In the end, though, she really does. The girlfriend in this game was super sweet and supportive. Rather refreshing, not at all what I expected to see.

This game is a very accurate portrayal of trying to do everyday tasks while suffering from major depressive disorder.
Though i see where you're coming from, I'm pretty certain the game is meant to be seen as a comedy with no deeper meaning. Look at the trainers and the reviews, it's clearly a comedy about an unlucky guy.

I see this more as a depiction of depression. Some days, its hard to get out of bed.... and then these "little things" Dan and Arin keep joking about, really take a toll on you. To be honest, after he dropped his coffee, I would've given up on the day if I was having a depressive episode. The ending was kinda showing how it feels to accomplish even the smallest task.

I just wish I was told up front they’re using a walkthrough, and not finding out halfway through because Arin just magically knows how to do things. It kinda feels like they’re trying to trick the audience into consuming a scripted walkthrough as authentic gameplay. I really only like watching the latter.
They did the same thing with Danganronpa and it rubbed me the wrong way.
When they gave the character crap for when he went fetal - that part of the game actually hit for me. That's someone who had an awful day the day before - got in a fight with Carla, the cereal incident - and now everything's going wrong this morning. When you lose that last spoon, and you don't have the emotional capacity to deal with anything else, it's not going from 0 to 100 - it's going from 95 to 105, and was just getting covered up before.
Do what you gotta do, Dave. Take your time, take care of yourself. When you're ready to get up again, you've got this. Until then, I understand and have your back.
Yeah, kinda disappointing that these guys didn't understand the point when they both have executive dysfunction issues in real life. Oh well: I assume they just weren't in the right mindset, since it is them amped up to be entertaining.
@@VSPhotfries And yeah, thats exactly it. I'm not mad at them, just disappointed (lol), and on the off chance they ever play it again I hope they get the chance to see it in that light. I do Let's Plays and stream and I know how the "must be entertaining" mindset can clash with some games.
@@BoterBug I feel like Jackscepticeye (and Markiplier too, though I don't watch as much of his stuff) are able to balance both very well, they can be entertaining whils playing games like this but also acknowledge and address the seriousness. They do it very well, but I get why the Game Grumps, having started as a funny haha channel, find it difficult to balance something heavier and continue to just do the funny haha's. Like you said, not mad, just slightly dissapointed but still watch their stuff. And at the end of the day, outside the games, they are both great dudes who take this stuff very seriously. Arin is actually a very kind soul who just comes off as douchey for his persona on GG, and Dan we all know is a lil angel with janky thumbs
@@VSPhotfries idk i didn't see it that way, didn't seem that deep to me, and honestly i think their reaction was more fun to watch that way, but that's just me, their content is usually more on the light hearted side of things so if you want more serious reaction to this type of stuff i dont really think game grumps is where you'd find it

This game definitely is reminiscent of Executive Dysfunction, ADHD, Depression, and a few other things you could throw in to make basic chores harder. It was really sweet that Carla was understanding and nice even if it was just minor inconveniences, since trying to force yourself to do chores when suffering a chronic illness, can feel like trying to put your hand on a hot stove at times.

I LOVED how supportive she was at the end. It didn't feel condescending to me. In fact I wish I had received that level of de-escalation and support from my loved ones long, long ago. it would have done a lot in making it easier for me to calm down, and come at the next day better than before, rather than being belittled, put down, and blamed for untreated and undiagnosed mental illness and neurodivergence.
same I loved the Carla bit!! it felt just like my struggles and my partner understanding and celebrating my victories with me, no matter how mundane or easy they're supposed to be for "normal" people. Arin and Dan were... not Carla this episode :/

I totally have had this feeling of "I... Just want to be a ball and wait for the end of my life." after the power cut off as I switched the kettle on to make some tea. And that was nearly not as bad a day as Dave's

@@NWolfsson woah I had the almost same exact experience. Power went out earlier today for maintenance, I had forgotten about it and my phone was dead. No internet, nothing to do except deal with my thoughts. Had to cry and go to sleep.
Sometimes the things that keep you going are the small victories, so when even the small things go wrong you have nothing to hold on too, especially if there's nothing to direct your anger at.
@@CodeNameMasterbeef I try not to take what the Grumps say to heart but when Dave said "Why is it so hard to just leave the house some days?" and Arin yelled at him to shut up because everything in his life was fine, that stung. I actually started to tear up a little...
the ending of this game reminds me of the procrastination episode of spongebob, where spongebob spends all night struggling to find the motivation to write his essay, finally does it and then finds out he didnt actually have to write anything. also both of these things depict what its like to have executive dysfunction pretty well

I was really disappointed by the Grumps' responses to it. What's easy for them is not easy for everyone.
@@jakesapir Scrolled to see if people agreed with me. This entire video makes it painfully obvious that Dan and Arin don't struggle with executive dysfunction very much... I understood what was happening the moment just getting up and out of bed was painfully arduous. For the player, its in the waiting for dialogue by the character procrastinating, every thing you need to do actually consisting of many, infinite, additional, smaller steps to actually complete a task. The microwave being so tedious to fuck with in the game? Depression, ADHD, and other experiences that make executive function a struggle can make even these 'easy' and simple steps feel... hard. Annoying. Tedious. Frustrating! Doing the laundry isn't just ONE thing... its picking up EVERY piece of clothing. its finding the right soap. its measuring it out. Its remembering the settings. What buttons was it? I've never used this thing before. Fuck this is new and I'm not familiar with it... I think you get the gist. I relate to the battle "just" to find your pants and get ready for work. Because its not "just" for people who face these kinds of struggles day after day, hour after hour. Its easily overwhelming and so infuriating and you find yourself in over your head until the only thing left to do is.... shut down. Disassociate. This is easily done when retreating into gaming or other hobbies that are more rewarding and easier to feel accomplished in, delivering that dose of chemical and psychological goodness you were craving all along and weren't getting out of /actually/ accomplishing your daily tasks.... Love the guys, but they are just a bit dense sometimes. BUT, that's why I don't watch them for uh.. high brow analysis. XD
@@Kyosumari I'm pretty sure Arin has ADHD and Dan has OCD, so they can problably relate to it a little bit. Their disorders seems to be treated tho, so maybe they don't run into those problems as much anymore. Although, I think the problem is less about them not relating, and more about them failing to empathize with the guy. But idk, I'm just speculating

@@KairuHakubi most cereal in the U.S. is super processed and COATED in sugar. And a healthy serving of cereal for an adult is like one cup, which is not nearly enough to satisfy any adult, so people usually eat way too much. So that may be why Arin assumes it's unhealthy. Also, the grumps recording vs airing timeline is insanely confusing at this point lol.

@@YuYu_Kami Yeah I know they didn't mean any harm, but it still kinda sucks. Basic "adulting" is really hard when your brain is fighting you constantly. I'm glad they've never gone through that themselves but it does mean the message of the game went right over their heads 😅
This game is pretty clearly about neurodivergence and how even the simplest of tasks can seem so difficult, how stressful it is when things go wrong, and the urge to do anything *but* the task at hand. The man is very pessimistic and anxious, not even wanting to get out of bed. Even with a lover, a big house, a mother who loves him, a cat, and all the nice things in life .... basic tasks still feel exhausting and tedious and that takes a huge toll on a person, especially when they don't go smoothly.

Its a rough experience, and Dan and Arin completely play the part of /exactly/ what makes people like this feel guilt at their own illness and the way it makes them feel, their own perceived failure and struggles with doing what everyone else just seems to magically do like its no big deal... when your brain doesn't process things that way, and every little thing IS a big deal when even the little victories in life aren't there for you anymore... how it builds and builds day in day out, and the rising of the anxiety of the quickly towering and looming pile of tasks, responsibilities, and more... the utter lack of empathy from Dan and Arin honestly kind of hurt. It felt callous and almost petty. Of course two successful, rich, happy people who don't experience this struggle would belittle someone with mental health issues because they're too out of touch to understand where the protagonist is coming from. I love the grumps, and while I don't think they intended to make fun of the protag so coldly, they clearly let the actually palpable and relatable struggle of the game go way over their heads.
I guess that's just the difference between lived experience and empathy, and not being under the pressure of keeping up some sort of funny persona with a constant stream of words coming from my mouth.

Because Dan knows Arin is reading from a walkthrough and the walkthrough didn't tell him to feed the cat until he gets the can opener in the basement.
I hope someone does an animated of this but from the cat's POV where poor Nugget just gets skinnier through each scene change.

I feel like Dan would really enjoy the game "Unpacking", it's got a similar art style/vibe and super relaxing music, just unpacking boxes into a new house w/ a cute minimal storyline :D
I love that game so hard. Played it multiple times just to enjoy sorting things differently. I don't think it's a game that will jibe well with Arin unfortunately, but Dan might find it satisfying. Could be wrong though, maybe they'll both love it.

It's meant to be comedic while also relating to people who struggle with doing basic tasks and finding the motivation to do them while everything goes wrong around them.

This game feels like a day in the life of an adult with adhd. Gotta find my pants so I can go to work, so Imma wander around my house aimlessly, procrastinate by cleaning up my whole house, and do anything and everything except that thing I need to do and talk to myself outloud all the while. Wait what was I doing again?
The team at game grumps really anticipated that arin was gonna end up in a coma after his boxing match so they recorded 4-6 months worth of content in advance to avoid the announcement that Arin died.

@@obcfamily Dont have the exact time but its the part he mentions forgetting to make his bed ruins his whole day. Nothing wrong with wanting to make your bed or having a preference but when forgetting to make your bed is a big enough deal that it can ruin your whole day its likely an OCD trait. Probably wouldnt have noticed it, except in previous shows hes mentioned being OCD so in that light a lot of his habits start to make sense.

I could go on about how Arin missed all the things he was hovering over constantly but I think the most annoying thing here is....Arin and Dan just....dont understand depression do they? Like how did they miss the entire point of this game...
In fairness, it’s a comedy show, so they’re looking at the game from that perspective. You can miss serious things when you’re looking for the joke. It was disappointing though.
"why did we decide that mint equals fresh?" is an interesting question. I believe it has something to do with the cooling feeling it gives? The only problem is that it became so synonymous with fresh that it's hard to find mint-free dental products for people with mint allergies. IDK about other places, but they don't even sell antimicrobial mouthwash without mint. just the alcohol-free fluoride kind(still better than not mouthwash at least) with cinnamon flavor.

Most mint toothpaste (re: almost all toothpaste) just plain hurts my mouth though and causes a phlegm response in the back of my throat that makes me gag every time I brush my teeth. I’d use a different toothpaste but it’s prescription… I just hate that PAINFULLY MINTY is the fucking default toothpaste flavor? Mint can be refreshing without hurting but apparently Big Toothpaste hasn’t figured it out yet…

For me it's a taste/texture thing, I absolutely hate the sensation of minty toothpaste, and I always put off brushing my teeth until the last possible minute.
There's no pain, but it feels like I've just chewed a cinderblock of ice and just let the chunks sit in my mouth and around my teeth for 20min. It's agony.

I was expecting the game to end with realizing it's the start of a zombie apocalypse or some other apocalyptic event. Then I thought maybe it'll end with "Wait a minute. It's Saturday!" And that's pretty much what happened. This was fun, though

Edit numero dos: 55:38 - as someone who loves a scenic drive, that one cuts deep Arin. Here in the UK you're never far away from radically different scenery. And much like Dan was saying about the cosy feeling of being warm whilst it rains outside, I get that feeling from a nice evening drive.

I know the guys were poking fun at this game for the jokes and japes, but I really enjoyed it! The gameplay mechanics seemed a little frustrating, but I appreciate that the game is just about all those little everyday struggles that can just pile up, and the conclusion being someone recognising your frustration, and offering support is very sweet! Great game!
Honestly the cats walk cycle is so delightful that I literally replayed bits where the cat walks a little because it’s just so enjoyable to see it’s cute little trot

Also, in case anyone was wondering, "constellation" IS the name for the grouping of stars - it's the official/recognized/what-have-you grouping. So, Cassiopeia, Ursa Major/Minor, Orion, etc. An asterism is an unofficial grouping of stars that also make some sort of shape, sometimes ones that can be found within constellations. For example, the Big Dipper is an asterism found within Ursa Major.

I get so stressed when not feeding my pets on time, especially because they can and WILL pester you until you do so. So I was screaming at Arin the entire time to feed the cat, it actually hurts for how long that took.

I know this is a game and this is a comedy gaming channel, but hearing Arin keep shouting at the dude saying his life is great and he has no reason to be sad, gave me flashbacks to every single person telling me I shouldn't be depressed because my life is OK, and just like that my depression was cured...
Yeah, I have some of the issues as the main character has and I have to say, that wasn't very Lovely of Arin 💔.
Especially since *today* I've had a family member say "Just take an hour to clean your room." Oh yes, thanks, didn't think of doing _that_ before. >_>

He's got very strong opinions, founded on something he heard once or just believes and that's it. You really shouldn't believe anything he says; just laugh at the funnies and filter out any life advice or tips or instructions Arin hands out.
@@NWolfsson @Phazz I would say there is a way to validate the difficulty that someone is going through without enabling them. If the person in the game is supposed to be portrayed as someone having mental health issues then the solution isn't just stop being sad and look at how great your life is. You can validate hey you're having a rough day. The problem I do worry with modern society is that we maybe saying just validate nothing else. It is in fact ok to be reminded at times that though you may be struggling there are things to appreciate, enjoy, or love about life. Therapy at the end of the day is that to a certain extent retraining the person to validate themselves while also enjoying life even through the struggle.
@@alfredoaraujo9294 That indeed, and it is why it hurt me that Arin (and Dan in a following manner) joked and snarked upon the character celebrating his victory upon achieving morning routine (in a hell of a bad luck streak, nonetheless). The celebration and validation of the loved one (the girlfriend saying "Oh hey, you did it with all that happening good on you, and it won't be moot just because you're not working today") are really nice and a good thing, I'm just sad they undermined it.
@@NWolfsson It is a little unfortunate. It seems they are likely perceiving It as someone who isn't dealing with a mental health issue but that it's an individual that is maybe over complaining. I appreciate your point about the loved validating them, but not going so far as saying yea your whole life is terrible more like hey sorry it was a tough day and then moving forward. We don't want to make people feel as though the basic inconvenience of life sometimes is always going to be the worse thing ever with or without a mental health issue.

I love both of them, and I love how they're always trying to make it as entertaining as possible, and make jokes all the time. I love them. But that was a really sweet ending. I thought for sure it was gonna have some gut punch even more depressing ending, but that was really nice.
