@@zombieprincess82 I did! I won't say that it's my favorite Gaskell but it is pretty powerful. I must say that I prefer North and South. Basically, North and South is a more polished version of Mary Barton. Both are "social problem" novels and Gaskell is essentially making the same points in both books but I feel she does it better in North and South. But, the reality with which she describes the misery and poverty in Mary Barton is very realistic and I'm sure it was shocking to her original readers.
I love 'Jane Eyre' though I've not read it for Victober. I try and find something new for the month, it can be a bit hit and miss 'Trilby' last year, which I didn't like. This year, 'Rhys Lewis' by Daniel Owen. I think the original Welsh version might have more nuance - the footnotes are good - and I'm enjoying the ride, it's a bit like 'David Copperfield' written as 'found autobiography'
I do like most that you talked about but also Agnes Grey and The Woman in White are fav's of mine.
I love me some Gaskell! I just read Mary Barton for the first time. Jude the Obscure traumatized me and I haven’t yet recovered. 😂
@@ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged yes, Jude is a rough ride! I haven't read Mary Barton yet. Did you enjoy it?

@clarepotter7584 I have 'Rhys Lewis' on my wishlist after seeing a few mentions of it on TBR videos, sounds interesting.
@@zombieprincess82 So far I would recommend it 'if I was writing this for a periodical' (he was) 😄
