your relationship is so heartwarming and your shared love for literature is wonderful to see. I bond with my Mum over a love for Liverpool FC
Thank you. That’s a lovely thing to hear.
The side eye from Simon when Louise pulls out SYD. 😂
Hahahahaha. 😒 Oops.
God, I just read the opening pages of Orbital via the Amazon sample and the opening paragraph is stunning. As you mention, the description of space, the deep black expanse of outer space being like a panther. WOW. also, I think the breadth of the novels here, the different qualities of them all, really shows how rich the novel is as a form today. I simply wouldnt be able to choose between them because at this stage each one would probably be a worthy winner
Samantha Harvey is a phenomenal writer, I seem to have lent out all of her books and never been given them back, apart from The Western Wind which I kept buying people ha!
I have to agree with you, Simon, on Stone Yard Devotional as my pick to win, but I am still in awe of all the work that Samantha Harvey put into Orbital, in her knowledge and descriptions of this planet of which we are a very small part. I attended your Women’s Prize event (virtually) on Sunday, and was so impressed, as always, with both of you, with your professionalism, your preparedness, your genuine interest in authors, and your incite into the books you read. You and your mother are such a delight to watch!…I can’t wait for your next events!!📚❤️❤️
You’ll be happy with the winner then, as I am. I’ve read all but one of Samantha Harvey’s books and think she’s an amazing writer. Soooooo pleased you enjoyed the first Women’s Prize Book Club. Very excited for our second guest who we are announcing on Thursday!!!!
I’ve enjoyed both of you throughout the awards season. The parallel reads were fun. James is my #1 pick, followed by Held, Orbital, SYD, The Safe Keep, and Creation Lake. I’m looking forward to finding out who wins tomorrow.😊
Not long to go until we know now.
Loved hearing both of your thoughts on this year’s list.
Love that you loved it!
Thank you both, reward yourselves for a job well done.❤
Thank you. It only felt like a job with one of the books. Hahaha.
I adore and appreciate these videos so much I’m a bit bummed the process is complete. My top 4 switch places often ( and are same as Simon’s ) but SYD is typically in my number 1 spot so I’m hype on it being yours Simon !!! But Mann, what a solid shortlist overall ! TYSM for doing this you 2 📖🪱💚
Hooray another member of the Stone Yard Die Hard gang hahaha.
Thanks for both sharing your thoughts on the shortlist, it was so fun to follow along! I've only read 3 and started a 4th on the shortlist (life got in the way unfortunately) but here's my ranking:
1. The Safekeep
2. Orbital
3. Creation Lake
I'm reading Stone Yard Devotional now and could easily see it becoming my number 1, but it'll definitely be my number 2 if not. It's my guess for the winner so we'll see if I (and Simon) are right tomorrow!
Not sure what I'll think of Held and James if I get to them. I watched your video on Held (haven't gotten to watching the James video yet) and it was wonderful to see such positive feedback after seeing a lot of negative/mixed reviews on it, so I'll probably read it next.
It is lovely to see how many people have our top books in there top two, so fingers crossed SYD stays with you and keeps getting better. I haven't seen any bad reviews of James, how interesting.
My list is the same as yours, Simon, apart from my first two are the other way around!
Oooh interesting!
Loved this. Would be so interested to see you do the Jhalak shortlist one year because it has such a mixture of formats (e.g. poetry, graphic novel, non-fiction) that I think the judging must be really challenging. I bet you would have such an interesting conversation about it.
I would love to do the Jhalak Prize at some point to but it is at the same time as the Women's Prize which with the book club mum and I are even more embedded in now. Gah, but also hooray!
My top three are 1. The Safe Keep 2. Stone Yard Devotional 3. James
A nice selection indeed.
I loved this series with your mum!! I also really enjoyed the 2024 Booker shortlist. My ranking from favourite to least: Orbital, Stone Yard Devotional, James, The Safekeep, Creation Lake, Held.
It’s a really, really good shortlist.
Loved watching this and seeing how you both ranked the books. My favourite would be The Safekeep followed by SYD, I read them in the summer and they have both really stayed with me. I did then go on to read The Weekend after SYD and loved it also. Really enjoyed and admired both James and Creation Lake. I think James might be crowned the winner. I didn't sadly care for either Orbital or Held.
If you haven't read Charlotte's The Natural Way of Things, I cannot urge you to head to that one enough, it is my favourite of her books - though I think SYD is incredible obviously.
1. SYD/James (can't decide, would be happy to see either of them win)
3. Orbital
4. The Safekeep
Last: Creation Lake (it just didn't work) & Held (didn't work for me personally, but I can see how people would get a lot out of it if it does work for them, so it will probably win 🤪)
I have everything crossed for Charlotte... so crossed it is actually getting a bit painful now!
I love this! Love following along your parallel read and love to hear your predictions/faves! For future video I would like to learn more about why Louise does not reread. It’s mentioned briefly in this video but I would love to know why! Thanks for sharing!
Oooh maybe it’s something we can film together because I don’t generally like to reread either, so it runs on the family!
Fav to least The Safe Keep, Held, James, Stone Yard Devotional, Orbital, Creation Lake.
Interesting!!
You give us your favourites, but you should've also add what you think the judges are gonna pick as the winner 😅. Good job on the videos about the Booker 📚 ❤
I think that it was the same thing. Also you can’t really second guess a judging panel and it’s just meant to be fun and our responses to the books individually before talking them through together.
Love these videos! Thank you x
@@rororeads awwww thanks lovely man! That’s lovely to hear!
The Sakekeep, Creation Lake and James were my favourites but wouldn’t be surprised with a win for Orbital and SYD
Hahaha. You managed to hedge your bets on five there hehehe 😉
You guys are the cutest. I have read them all, this is my ranking from favorite to least: Stone Yard Devotional, The Safekeep, James, Orbital, Creation Lake, Held
Hooray. Another Stone Yard Die Hard. That’s what I’m calling our gang. Hahaha.
I am in! If you will share Charlotte Wood with the new lovers if her work 😂
I’ve read 4… my order is 1) SYD 2) James 3) orbital 4) the safe keep. Haven’t read Held but the authors reading was brilliant last night so I really want to get to that and I have no interest in Creation Lake which means it will probably win😂😂
Haha, please don't curse us with that!
Loved this, thank you.
Pleasure!
1. James
2. Stone Yard Devotional
3. Creation Lake
4. The Safekeep
5. Orbital
6. Held
Oooh an interesting list. Thanks for sharing.
I only read three of the books, so I will rank those. Orbital, then James, then The Safekeep. I just really enjoyed listening to Orbital. (I listened to all three of these.)
It’s a very good shortlist this year.
Stone Yard Devotional is my number 1
Another Stone Yard Die Hard, I love to see it.
I’ve really loved all your videos around the Booker Prize. You made me laugh out loud with this one Simon, especially when Louise pulled out SYD, I was shocked too😂 Charlotte Wood to win for me.
Hahaha. I’m glad I wasn’t the only shocked one at that. Hahaha.
Hahaha, Simon's expression over Louise's ranking of SYD. It's the books that stay with you, and for me, those are Safekeep, SYD, and James .
All great books!
I'm just finishing SYD and have loved it so much. I highlighted so much in this book! So much introspection and bigger themes and the writers way of approaching them simply without much drama is amazing... up next will be The Safe Keep so I'm wondering if I'll be team Simon or team Louise!! Hopefully I can get a good chunk of it in tmrw! And tmrw nite!! Excited for the prize, I've read more of it than I've gotten a chance to do in years so I'm quite invested!!! ❤
Ooh you’ll have to report back as to which team you end up being on. Hahaha.
please do the international booker shortlist next year! it takes place earlier in the year 😅 really enjoyed your parallel reads!
I think we’d both love to do the Booker International but it’s around the same time as the Women’s Prizes and that might be too much prize content for us and you. Also I know one of the judges and I wouldn’t want anyone thinking it was a fix if I got it right.
Aww, I love it when you two film together! I'm not reading Creation Lake because I really don't get along with Kushner's writing style. I'm all for Neanderthals, but even they are not convincing me to pick her book up. 😂 It took me forever to get a copy of Stone Yard Devotional, and I'm about half way through it and loving it. I loved James and Held; I read Orbital, and liked it when I read it, but could barely remember it after a week. The Safekeep is my fervid hope for underdog winner -- but I'm still only halfway through SYD, so not absolutely sure. Safekeep will definitely be on my faves of the year -- what a book: I never saw any of the twists coming and even liked the unlikeable characters. I mean, liked them being unlikeable. 🤷🏻♀️ It was such a gorgeously cut little gem -- it felt like perfection for me. So, unless SYD can knock down Safekeep, that's my pick and I passionately want it to win! 💚💚💚
The Safekeep is great. Rereading has been interesting because I loved The Safekeep more on the first read because I didn’t know what was coming so I wonder how that will impact the judges on a third read. It’s an amazing book. I just got sooooo much more from a second read of Stone Yard.
I had to pause the video when Louise pulled out SYD at #4 and I saw Simon’s face. That’s how hard I was laughing. I agree that this year’s shortlist is strong (I thought the longlist was strong too) and have changed my ranking, even of my least favorite, several times. I also have absolutely no idea which book is going to win. Very unusual for the Booker not to feel as though certain books are frontrunners. My current ranking, from favorite to least, is: James, Stone Yard Devotional, Held, The Safekeep, Orbital and Creation Lake.
Hahahaha. I just watched it back (no edits in this video, no time) and might have to do a few screen grabs. Honestly I thought I had a much better poker face than I clearly do. Hahaha. 😝
Loved hearing both your thoughts, especially where they differed! Cracking video series, and so well organised! I’ve really enjoyed watching them 😊
My personal rankings:
1: The Safekeep
2: James
3: Orbital
4: Stone Yard Devotional
5: Held
6: Creation Lake
We did get a little delayed as my work got in the way. Oops. Thank you for sharing your list. I’m so pleased you’ve enjoyed the videos.
I haven't read "Stone Yard Devotional" because it hasn't been published here yet. I have not finished "Creation Lake" and don't think I will. I also haven't read "Held" either. I would be happy with "James" or "The Safekeep" winning. Excited for the announcement! Thanks so much for doing these videos!
Blackwell's can help you out with Stone Yard Devotional and it is free shipping, just saying hehehe. Glad you enjoyed the videos.
@ I ordered it! It was 15 pounds for shipping to NYC though.
I DNF 'Creation Lake' but the rest I read, liked them all, and here's my list:
5- 'Stone yard devotional'
4- 'The Safekeep'
3- 'Held'
2- 'Orbital'
1- 'James'
Interesting indeed. We almost matched on two, until I changed my mind on Orbital. Which I’m still debating. Though my favourite is unwaveringly my favourite.
A great video, keep up the good work.
Thank you very much.
Simon your face when Louise pulled out Stone Yard 😂😂😂
Personally I’m hoping for James or Stone Yard! Also loved The Safekeep but for some reason can’t see it winning.
Hahahaha. I thought I had such a good poker face. But apparently not. Hahaha. I wouldn’t be too mad or sad if James won… or The Safekeep… or Orbital. My heart does belong to Stone Yard Devotional though.
I’m gonna add you to my Storygraph because I can read you like a book 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video, as always. Sad to hear you say this is likely one of your last videos with your mom this year... Will you film a review of the 12 (or 13) books you read for the prompts this year together? Would be fun...
We will do a wrap up of the prompts. But probably not together as we won’t see each other now until Christmas Eve. But we may announce the next prompts, after we’ve asked for them and randomly picked them, at the end of December. In Betwixtmas.
Would like Held or Creation Lake for winner. Least favorite was Stone Yard Devotional-really surprised by this, so wanted to love this book after all the rave reviews (I never connected with the narrator or the writing….). Orbital is in fifth place for me. And it’s a tie for James and Safekeep in the next position(4th/3rd). Great group of books, mostly. Thanks for this wonderful video, loved the parallel reads. Really appreciate Louise’s take on Held-that ability of the writer move me on an emotional level is why I ranked it so high…And, the humor of Creation Lake has me ranking it as a winner, loved the writing and cast of characters as well…❤❤❤
It’s always fascinating to see/hear what other people loved in the books you didn’t and vice versa.
Your mother is so beautiful -- in shade or in full light. I've only read one of the books so far, so it (James) is by default my number 1. 😀
Hahaha. It’s a good default to have.
My top two are the same as Simon's. This is probably presumptuous, because people's second novels are not necessarily better than their debuts, but i think the safekeep could have been even better if the author had the level of experience of the other authors on this list.
Really enjoyed your reflections and I'm glad you both enjoyed the experience
For me the magic of SYD is that the main character is living a life I will never lead (I hope!) but some moments were relatable in a punchy way
We had a fab time reading the books. I am glad that came across. I have to say I very politely, warmly and kindly but quite strongly (ha) disagree on your point about The Safekeep. Mostly, I don’t think some authors could write a book so deft with such heft five, eight, ten or more books in. As you say authors don’t always get better and some go up and down. But also which level of experience does she need to attain? Harvey is on her sixth book, Wood her eight or ninth, Everett on like his twentieth or something. I cant wait to see what she writes next as I think she’s brilliant and am really looking forward to following her career.
@@SavidgeReads you're probably right, I just felt like I wanted even more from the book but I'm struggling to put my finger on what exactly it is. The Safekeep and SYD are easily two of the books I've enjoyed the most this year - I read Stoneyard a while ago and I still think about it often. And not just if I see a rat.
Managed to get here just in time before the announcement! I am team Louise with this one, ADORED The Safe Keep. I didn't get to Held, so I haven't included it, but I think my ranking would be:
1. The Safe Keep
2. Orbital
3. James
4. Stone Yard Devotional
5. Creation Lake
But like both of you, I loved all the top four books so it could be a totally different order on a different day.
Oooh we still have a tantalising amount of time left. I don't actually know when the winner is announced I have realised.
I love your cardigan, so cute!
@@Mesa37122 thank you very much!
Still waiting for James, Safe Keep and Stoneyard Devotional from the library😢. I think two of these could be in the Women’s Prize if eligible. Just finished Glorious Exploits and loved itxx
They will be in demand for a while I imagine. Libraries are wonderful places so see what your doing as super important having reserved them and that you’ll be able to play catch up. Sadly Stone Yard Devotional was eligable for last years prize and wasn’t on the longlist, I did sulk mildly. Haha.
The coordinating clothing 🖤💛
Ha. Purely unintentional lol
I DNFd Creation Lake too. I kept waiting for something to happen . I got bored.
Me too. And whilst I really liked our snarky prickly protagonist, it wasn’t enough.
more videos with your are yer maw!! please ;)
Ooh I don't know, it is nice to have them as a treat now and again lol.
Creation Lake sounds like a novel trying to be urgent about urgent ecological and political issues without being urgent as a novel
Erm, sort of 🤣🤣🤣🤣
📚💜
Sorry, I'm not a fan of your parallel reads. If you both recapped each section would have been more interesting.
We did recap at the same point in those videos roughly. But if you don’t like them that’s absolutely fine, you don’t have to watch them. Lol.
