Angelou Sia but the price of their phone will get higher since Qualcomm has monopoly over the North America chips and google or any other company would have to pay a fee
DeadofWinter321 is it as good as iPhone though? I have a Galaxy S8 right now and I'm in-between The S9, Pixel 2 XL, and iPhone X. I use Snapchat a ton and I know its still gonna suck on S9. Do you think the Pixel XL is going to be as good as the iPhone X?
Roy Sar Yes, but this doesn't help really. Their digital zoom is just machine learning. It can create details which didn't exist. Sony has a similar feature called "Clear zoom".
I sold my pixel 2 XL, and missed the camera so I bought another one. I updated it to Android 8.1 Feb update. On my old Pixel 2 XL, I went into developer options and enabled Camera HAL. That option is missing on my new pixel 2 XL. I just want to make sure I understand, that setting is now turned on by default?
So was the visual core used for anything at all before Febuary or whenever it was opened to third party apps? He says the normal camera app still doesn't use the visual core, so what's the point of it exactly? If it's not helping your main camera app then what's the difference between the processing times and battery usage from pixel 1 to pixel 2, seeing as the dedicated processor for hdr+ isn't being used by the camera app on pixel 2..?
So is HDR+ available on non-Pixel 2 phones? Are there other photo coprocessors in other phones that could take advantage of HDR+? For example, the Sony XZ phones have a BIONZ image processor - could that be used to process HDR?
Tks for this, it's hard to explain this to people, specially with so many click bait headlines out there. You guys should also make a separate video explaining HDR+, most people doesn't even know that HDR+ is way better then HDR auto, even if the phone triggers HDR.
+Nick Mowen Google says the stock Pixel camera app doesn't use the Visual Core, since that app already has HDR+ built in. We don't know if it'll be enabled in a future app update (would be great for battery life) but right now it doesn't seem to be a priority.
Why would they enable it for third party apps (meaning it works just fine) but not for the main app? It just doesn't seem to make sense, would've been nice of Google to clarify. From Android Authority: "However, Google confirmed it does not use the Pixel Visual Core in a statement to Android Authority. Since the core Pixel camera app already has HDR+ built in, enabling the chipset would be redundant." How is it reduntant if they swap the slower processing of the 835 out with the visual core, nobody asks them to process it twice. There's got to be a good reason, but from the outside it doesn't make sense.
Android Central Would be nice to know if it's used in stock app or not. I agree that it kinda make no sense not to enable it for Googles own phones. And I would make it 100% useless to me if it's enabled in some 3rd party apps that I don't use
Yeah, if i'm not wrong there was a earlier update that said that they are enabling the visual core and there were videos that show that the pictures got a little bit better after that. But maybe in that case the Visual core only assists the SD835 with image processing and doesn't really took over the function from the SD835 completely. So, maybe visual core's main priority is to add the HDR+ functionality to 3rd party apps which cannot directly access the SD835 to do that. But even without if the images are still the best in the market. I make tech videos in a different style. If you are free please do give my channel a try.

Some one help I'm having major issues with snapchat WhatsApp Instagram and other 3rd party apps since this visual core update, my images turn in to an absolute mess with huge pink, blue and other weird patterns going through it and you can't even see the image, yet video is fine
i updated the apps turned my phone off and on again, hadr reset it, factory reset it everything, i have had to go bakc to my iphone 5s for 2 weeks while it gets sent off for repair
I hope Samsung does something to counter this because their quality on SC And instagram is not as great as the iPhones. With this enabled now the Pixel 2 photos will be better than iPhone? Yeah Pixel 2 is what I want so bad now.
DAMN BRO , im totally agree with u im S9 user now considering to get pixel 2 cause its cheaper than most of the phone and still beast in social media apps which i used most
Gio Galvez Rear cameras are about the same with iPhone having better colors but its exposure is .... Meh . While the pixels HDR+ is just on a another level but white balance is a bit too cold imo at least. Front camera no comparison it's a smackdown. Pixel crushes the iPhone period.
I'm on the 2016 Pixel XL and the update did not come in time for me either, I had to force it. Deleted cache and data of Google Services Framework and Google Play Services in Settings and applications. After you do that turn phone off then on again and run update it should pull the OTA update.
So if I understand correctly, it's not the IPU that's creating the better photos, it's the HDR+. The IPU just allows for these HDR+ photos to be rendered more efficiently? I have a Galaxy S8 that has HDR+ as an option. Does this update to Android 8.1 mean that snapchat etc will be able to take HDR+ photos using the S8's camera?
No, i think this update only is meant for pixels 2's, they always had this visual core that was inside then but wasn't enabled, and yeah they are a more efficient and actually a better image processing unit than the SD835 and if the third party apps can take advantage of it then this very efficient chip can handle the HDR+ on third party camera app, which means better pictures on third party apps. But on the other hand this isn't an update that makes HDR+ as a whole being available to the third party apps. Usually it's the manufacturer that designs the HDR+ on a smartphone so only Samsung can make that happen on your Galaxy S8. I make tech videos with a new style. Please do give my channel a look if you have some free time to spare.
No quite, Even if Samsung has HDR+ there is the software that only Google has to produce those amazing pictures. And Samsung doesn't have an IPU meaning that when the Google finally uses their IPU it will really show more of a difference. (Which it already has overother Android phone as well).
What about them? The hardware is in Pixel 2 phones, why would you expect it to work on a phone that doesn't have the chip? My car has an accelerator but I don't expect it to work on my kitchen sink.
S Saini The camera is phenomenal. I absolutely love it. On my old phone(iPhone 7) the quality is good but compared to the Pixel 2 XL it's complete shit. There's just soooo much more detail in the Pixel 2 camera. That's for both using third party apps like Snapchat and Instagram as well as the actual camera. Looks amazing.
What kind of savage snaps a photo directly to their Instagram. Admittedly I don’t use Snapchat or Instagram stories so it doesn’t really affect me.
Next, google will make their own processor.
Angelou Sia They'll probably just buy Qualcomm.
Danial Adri i saw the news, that they hired the chip engineer from apple. Ex chip engineer from apple.
Angelou Sia but the price of their phone will get higher since Qualcomm has monopoly over the North America chips and google or any other company would have to pay a fee
But the thing Qualcomm have over other chips is ending in 2020 so it could happen
What i'm actually waiting for before buying a pixel phone
I noticed a difference on Snapchat. Makes me like my Pixel 2 XL even more.
DeadofWinter321 good for you. Snapchat is literally shit other than on iPhone and pixel 2
Wait, Snapchat takes actual photos? Last time I've used it, it only took a screenshot of the viewfinder.
I definitely noticed a difference in Snapchat.
Lazar Haven't got the update come through for my 2XL yet, does it finally do the camera justice and ruin iPhone user's stories?
which update is it? camera update or any other app gets updated over play store?
No updates yet for me. I thought PVC was enabled in 8.1? So probably the third party apps just need to update the app now to support it?
The Visual Core is activated with the february security update
Nirav Makadia I noticed the improvement on snapchat 10.25.4.0 beta
not only, now the camera use the PVC for better digital zoom. read about it, it's new and calls RAISR.
Roy Sar Yes, but this doesn't help really. Their digital zoom is just machine learning. It can create details which didn't exist. Sony has a similar feature called "Clear zoom".
But given the data size, any details it creates are significantly more likely than not to have existed
Im in 2019 and still think this visual core was a life change... Thank you Google.....
but this summer end of world :(
Hate the way Pixels use Pano mode. Also gallery album organisation is horrendous.
How do you enable it? My pics on Snapchat and Instagram look awful on my pixel 2XL
As a new pixel user, I wanna ask why in my developer options there is no 'Camera HAL HDR+' toggle? is it already on default now? thanks
Let me see it with Snapchat!!! Why isn't there a video on I'm this yet!?
1:48 so is it slow at taking pictures in comparison to iphones or galaxy phones?
So was the visual core used for anything at all before Febuary or whenever it was opened to third party apps? 'Pixel Neural Core' mentioned in the upcoming Pixel 4. Wonder what that will do.
Pixel visual core is not getting utilised by instagram or snapchat anymore. Can someone help me fix this?
Dated 8/06/2020
So is HDR+ available on non-Pixel 2 phones? Are there other photo coprocessors in other phones that could take advantage of HDR+? For example, the Sony XZ phones have a BIONZ image processor - could that be used to process HDR?
That's Amazing! I wonder if Samsung or any other phone manufacture will have something for 3rd Party Camera Apps?
I still don’t get In my Pixel 2 February update.😔
This is crazy interesting
Tks for this, it's hard to explain this to people, specially with so many click bait headlines out there. You guys should also make a separate video explaining HDR+, most people doesn't even know that HDR+ is way better then HDR auto, even if the phone triggers HDR.
Will all android phones be getting this? And is snapchat as good as it is on an iOS device?
Did they ever activate the visual core in the camera app or did they save that for Pixel 3?
Google enabled the pixel visual core for the stock app back in October... which is why you haven't heard about it recently
+Nick Mowen Google says the stock Pixel camera app doesn't use the Visual Core, since that app already has HDR+ built in. We don't know if it'll be enabled in a future app update (would be great for battery life) but right now it doesn't seem to be a priority.

Playdust eat tide pods
Playdust have you updated the apps?
i updated the apps turned my phone off and on again, hadr reset it, factory reset it everything, i have had to go bakc to my iphone 5s for 2 weeks while it gets sent off for repair
Thank you for explaining that one kept it nice and simple
So it doesn't effect videos in 3rd party apps?
Was the audio in this video sped up or something? Alex sounds weird.
I hope Samsung does something to counter this because their quality on SC And instagram is not as great as the iPhones. With this enabled now the Pixel 2 photos will be better than iPhone? Yeah Pixel 2 is what I want so bad now.

Brilliant like always 😀
And what's about the HDR+ enhanced ?
Thanks for explaining this! 😊
Great work Alex, nicely explained, Kind regards Richard U.K
Great explanation thanks!
Is there a way to turn it off I think I have a defected visual core and its destroying ever image I take on 3rd party apps
Playdust return it get a new one
Yep... Big difference is lowlight pics on Snapchat. Before, Snapchat would look pixelated and filled with noise in lowlight. Now it looks good.
Even in 2019, Google still not enable PVC for their camera application, they just believe no image quality benefits to enable PVC
I'm so stuck on this phone it's hard to want another phone and I'm coming from the iPhone x! That's saying something for this device
RD Tech lol um iPhone X does have a more advanced camera overall than the Pixel 2. You should have kept it if you’re into photography.
Gio Galvez no lmao. Every RUclipsd says Pixel Camera is the best. For 2 years now
Remiyyah A lot of people say that. But it’s not true
Great review by AndroidCentral on PVC that's introduced by #teampixel
Awesome Video😗👍
My phone still hasn't updated to use it. :(
I feel the VisualCore will do much more in the future then just improve camera on other apps.
finallyyyyyyy i understand what that visual core thingyy
Have not received the February update yet on my pixel 2
Yatharth Dhingra is the phone from Verizon but being used with a different carrier?
AAA _ nah I have an unlocked model
I have both verizon and google store pixel 2 and 2 XL, no updates for both yet
You have to update your Google play services to the new beta
I'm on the 2016 Pixel XL and the update did not come in time for me either, I had to force it. Deleted cache and data of Google Services Framework and Google Play Services in Settings and applications. After you do that turn phone off then on again and run update it should pull the OTA update.

I have a Galaxy S8 that has HDR+ as an option. Does this update to Android 8.1 mean that snapchat etc will be able to take HDR+ photos using the S8's camera?
Nathan Budd no
No. Google only opened the API for their IPU to third party apps. Since the IPU is a pixel exclusive, your S8 won’t be affected.
No. It is exclusive only to Pixel/Pixel 2's and XL models

i was thinking about this a while ago. thanks
0:38 and 0:43
what about other non pixel phone?? :))
aliffiansyah maulana no PVC on non pixel phones :))
What about them? The hardware is in Pixel 2 phones, why would you expect it to work on a phone that doesn't have the chip? My car has an accelerator but I don't expect it to work on my kitchen sink.
Visual core is suitable for Kirin 970 process
I love pixel
Not using PVC on the main camera app is SO google. They always neglect their own services above all others.
So they spent everything on the camera and use a lowend screen display
And I thought it was PVC pipe...
I would believe anything what good saying
2:55 Look how bad the blue shift on the XL.
Will be interesting to see how the pixel 3 will be like
i wonder if they will have 2 lenses
Then what the point of have visual core of the stock camera app doesn't even use it? Lol
Jaidee King it will be used in stock camera app in the future for other amazing things
Intro music?
Aahhh that's why
In don't think you were perfectly right...but you almost get it.
Only if the phone wasn't so ugly...:/
Redowan Nafi and had a headphone jack
.
It nice that google unlock the power of the camera on software that only 1% of the people can update to .
Thi Henry What?
Such ugly phones. Look like they were made for 2016
1St
The blue tint is so obvious
fahim zulk only because its right next to a phone with yellowish tint. It's a matter of perspective
that garbage 2 xl screen tho
the0000alex0000 No 😡
Sorry but the Pixel 2 camera does not crush the competition lol, what a fanboy
S Saini So what phone is better than the Pixel 2's camera? I'll start off by saying Samsung phones look grainy as fuck and its below ALL iPhones.
S Saini what a fanboy 😂 u are
Prateek Kejriwal Kejru saale, daffa ho yahaan se. Hattt.
S Saini The camera is phenomenal. I absolutely love it. On my old phone(iPhone 7) the quality is good but compared to the Pixel 2 XL it's complete shit.
