I’m here for the nostalgia. I just bought my first pixel (8 pro) and I am rewatching the reviews from the previous ones, remembering how much I wanted one since day one 😌
This phone is still my daily driver. Was an absolute game changer when it came out, but with how fast the smartphone industry moves, it faded into obscurity relatively quickly. Seeing the original Nougat UI was a nice lil trip down memory lane!
@podolski @kameel If you are going for Android the first time then consider buying a phone running pure version. It's simple, clean and easy to use. You can later switch to other versions.
Excellent review. I ordered but have not received my Pixel XL. Can't wait. You're very well spoken Marques. I can't thank you enough for not saying the word "like" even once.
Mark Rothenberg I've never met another Rothenberg before ! Only difference is my last name is spelt "Rothenburg." As in the town Rothenburg in Germany.
I've met many Rothenbergs and Rothenburgs. In fact, there is another Rothenberg living less than two miles from me and, a surprise to me when it happened, another Rothenberg at work. Both not related but I would assume somewhere back long ago possibly family members.
The Pixel in 2019 for anybody who might want to buy it. 1. Size: This was a big phone in 2016, but now it's just about the right size. It's a dwarf compared to iPhone X and XS and the Samsung A series. Fits almost perfectly in your hand. 2. Performance is amazing. That 4gig RAM still pulls through 3 years later and so does the processor. I love that I can open my browser, use it, minimize it, and 2 hours and 10 apps later, go back to my history and my browser still has my tabs all loaded. None of the apps I've used have dragged or stalled so far, apart from Firefox, and I think that has to do with the app's own inadequacies. Background processes are unnoticeable, which works well with its camera and other heavy functions. 3. Battery life. I think this is suffering a lot from Android Pie's needs. You have to be conservative in your usage for it to last a day neatly, especially if you have massive screen time. Passive usage lasts much better, i.e. standby time, and music playing. 4. Memory: 32gb is woefully inadequate 3 years later. Might have been ok for 2016, but not anymore. Thankfully, Google still give you unlimited cloud storage for any pics you take with your pixel. I like to have my music on my phone like a dinosaur so that cloud storage gives me some extra room to work with. 5. Camera: Still great in 2016, obviously the newer phones have caught up or surpassed it, but I think the camera's quality is timeless. The colours come out so well and the focusing is instantaneous. You can just pull your phone out, snap a pic in an instant, lock the phone and put it back in your pocket, and all the processing will take place in the background with no fuss. It has great features too, like 3d photos that you can then view with VR units and Google Lens for those in the espionage industry. Price: You'll get the regular sized 32gb model for $220 on Amazon. The XL model is cheaper across the board. You'll be better off paying an extra 10-20 dollars for the 128gb model.
Joe R. Oh dude I'm so sorry to hear that D: Verizon hasn't shipped my Pixel XL yet... they will on the 21. Until then I'm left with my grena_*cough* I mean my Note 7
charlie pepin Weird that it's known as the Apple cycle as Intel had been doing their Tick Tock cycle by redesigning the architecture one year and then shrinking the die the next year. A few other companies do this cycle but I can't remember off the top of my head.
Yes, never create a product based on out of its looks/design, we arent selling painting or houses , unless its a Caravaggio or a Frank Lloyd Wright house.
id He spent like 20 seconds mentioning the screen resolution? The rest was based on pure experience. I have owned the others...note 7, galaxy 7 edge, lgg5, iPhone 6s and on and on. This is the best experience on a phone I have ever had. Again, because I own one and am not comparing spec sheets I can boldly say that.
What's to say? Same as iPhone 6s, but slightly faster, and the dual-camera gimmick. iPhone 7 Plus with 128GB costs 945 dollars with tax, that is grossly overpriced.
Being an owner of the S7E as well as Pixel XL for me the PXL is the best phone experience out of the two and all the other Android phones I have owned. The PXL is a joy to use and it simply just works. My S7E whilst having some cool gimmicks does come close but the PXL nabs it. Picture quality is stunning, it is quick and very smooth, sound quality via a decent pair of headphones (Ultimate Ears T-Fi 10, VerveOnes+, B&Ws etc.) sounds exceptional, call quality, battery life, display and that fast fingerprint scanner makes this phone stand out for me
IAmNotALegend I don't mind the bezel size, since it might be required to add dual speakers, but if they don't add dual speakers, I would say to remove the bottom bezel and make the current speakers better.
Barry Liu exactly. I'm using a Nexus 6P now and honestly without front facing speakers and not even water resistant to me is a huge flop. comparing this pixel to 6P it's like 1 step forward 2 steps back
Ali Adnan lol I have the s6, which still has a pretty good camera. I like my phone, I have just always wanted a stock Android phone and I'm kind of a Google fanboy lmao
Tyree Robinson I just typed into Google pixel launcher apk and followed a forum that had it and the wallpapers app. The hard part was getting google now swipe left feature. You have to install that as a system app which you can only do if you're rooted. But 8f you have rooted it's not that hard, I found a tutorial for that on youtube
I'm sorry Marques, but for the price they asking for, the speaker and the looks does come into account. Apple charges quite a lot for their phones, but you end up getting a complete experience (this is coming from a guy who hates Apple), there's the looks, specs, the whole schbang. Based on what you said in the video, it would be worth getting this phone just for the camera, and the improvements don't seem to be enough, again for the ask price. Google assistant seems more like a gimmick anyway, let's face it! Why not consider Moto Z, which at least dared to be different with the snaps? They can make way to cool new ideas, this Google phone can make way to nothing new.
tomar5e115 apple at least has stereo speakers. Bottom firing and from the ear piece together sounds way better than the pixel's single bottom speakers that can be easily muffled..
mine is even way down the line cus i just got it. Well I'm still an iOS user with a notch just trying see what's Android is like after all this year's I switched And by the way I was gonna use the emoji for the first time and appear to look so terrible compared to iOS that I can't even use Any (-:
Also, one thing I noticed on one of our in-store displays is that the Pixel has some seriously ridiculous stand-by time when not on a network. I switched on airplane mode and took it off a charger on a Friday, and by Friday the following week it was still on at 50% battery remaining. Pretty insane!
I disagree: No Sd-cardslot, not waterproof, Halos and lens blur- camera problems, no stereo sound and the mate 9 is much faster. This is definitely not the best android phone, only the most expensive.
iPhone is and will always be the most advertised and most popular and thus the best smartphone as long as most consumers and most manufacturers think its the best. Every other phone is just a copy and competitor of the latest iphone. There are phones with better battery etc. But the lastest iphone always has top camera and internals. And the OS is way better than any android(only ok android imo and many others is stock android) and a jailbroken iphone is everything and more than android. There is no denying that apple are geniuses. Everyone who cant afford an iPhone wishes they could have one.
Hiro Atibagos yes that was my reaction too. But maybe they wanted stabilisation to be handled by the main processor with a more sophisticated algorithm. After all the processor is overkill. Dedicated h/w does not always mean better. Using both might have produced less than desirable results. Just speculating.
LoveStallion Same here. If only it could age as good as the N5... I bet I could still use mine if I got the camera and screen replaced. Let's hope the 6P lasts!
This review was the last confirmation I needed to go forward with purchasing a Pixel XL. I've been loving it ever since. I'm actually typing on it right now! Thanks.
iPhone with 720p display costs the same and people don't give shit... but this amazing device is over priced for you..... #claps please don't reply with justification.
It's a great phone, but I think it's overpriced. The S7 Edge I feel has this beat in terms of tech. The S7 looks good, has water resistance and wireless charging, best in class screen. It also has a really nice curved screen. Those are just all things I expect at the maximum flagship price. It is a good phone but it comes up a tad short. If you pay 800 bucks for a phone you should get *ALL* of it not *most* of it. That and if I had it my way I still prefer the buttons off the screen for more screen real estate.
Hank Hill well in that case, if I pay (whatever the s7 currently costs) for a S7, I expect minimum 2 major Android updates within 3 months from the AOSP release without any bloat and perfect optimization with all the UI in the ROM following material design guidelines.
Would you be willing to do a video on whether you should upgrade from the Pixel to the Pixel 2? Kind of like a “The Original Pixel, One Year Later” video?
I see a lot of complete unnecessary hate towards this phone. I had been using an iPhone as my daily driver for about a year after switching to apple from my Lg G3. I got tired of apple and Decided to buy this phone, I have to say it is so incredible. Incredible picture/video, incredibly fast, and you may find it hard to believe but I actually love the design of the pixel and that's one of the main reasons I bought it. Going from a heavily skinned android (LG) much like Samsung, I don't think I will go back to that unless it really changes. This is android at its very best it can be. People get a bad taste in their mouth when they use android because of Samsung and lg. The pixel is the future, I love my pixel XL and can't wait to see how this phone grows overtime.
Rutvik K. I think instead of pixel, I can rather go for Samsung galaxy s7 edge as a premium device... But for performance and value for money... Oneplus 3..fingers crossed
I think this might be the android phone i finally go for. I have tried to switch from iphone but been upset with sub par battery and performance, but it looks like android finally reigns king in every single aspect.
Been using the Pixel for 5 days now and he is not kidding about the battery life - it is insanely good. I am constantly streaming video, music, podcasts, taking photos and videos, chatting, downloading, playing games and I end the day with at least 30-40% left. On top of that, the standby time is incredible. I went to sleep with my phone at 86% battery. Woke up 8 hours later and the battery was at 84%. Blew my mind.
MTT Now! The Pixel is so much better than the iphone in every single way, except for water resistance: •The pictures and videos are better; It's not over-saturated like apple users say, it does make more pleasing photos with great colors, better stabilization, and better dynamic range. •The AI is better with Google Assistant, often answering questions two to three times faster than Siri. It also sounds more natural, can hold a conversation, has a better personality imo, and even understands context. •The android os is better and more intuitive, with more features and functionality. To be honest I find pure stock android simpler than ios, but I guess it just depends on what you are used to, and its more customizable, enough said. I can make my phone look like how I want it look, not like how a company thinks my phone should look. I even have the ability to play my old nes and gameboy games with ease whenever i want. I can download songs for free on my phone whenever i want. Also, you can find a lot of apps on the play store for free, that cost money on the app store. There's even entire categories of apps that the app store will never have. There's more freedom with android in general. •It's just as secure as ios, and it gets updated very often as soon as the updates come out. •And the reception is better as well; You'll have more bars of an Lte connection compared to other phones. •There's 24/7 support built into the phone, easily found in the settings with a swipe to the right, where you can chat with someone to help you. •It's very fast and snappy without any lag, opening most everyday apps faster than the iphone. •There's no camera bump. •There's a headphone jack. •There's fast charging. •It has better battery life and a higher resolution amoled display. •It has a better screen to bezel size ratio. •There's free unlimited storage for photos and videos at original quality on google photos. •The phone stands out, where most people would either have an iphone or samsung. People would be intrigued by what phone you have. And it looks much better in person, than in video. •And if you truly think the phone is ugly, then slapping a D brand skin on it will make it look pretty dope. Especially the marble skin on the white pixel. •And also, you can expect a lot more features to come next year on the pixel 2. •Plus, from what numerous reviewers have been saying, the user experience on the pixel is amazing and smooth, but it's hard to explain, and you have to actually use the phone to understand.
It's hard to say, mine was still under warranty. But you can do an online chat with Google reps and give it a shot. You've got nothing to lose and their customer service is top notch so it's painless
For the features you get for the price, it is way overpriced. $869 for the XL and 128GB is insane. The S7 edge can be had now for 500-600. There is no way this phone is worth that much more. The software features will be ported and ROMed in no time. Swipe up to launch apps? Are you kidding, any good launcher can do that. Even with the nuclear device that is the Note 7, I'd still rather have that and take my chances. It is the better phone. Google is going the Apple route and charging more for less.
Do not forget about the Project Fi capability, it could save you $20-$120 a month on your cell phone bill making this phone a no brainer. Switched from Verizon to this phone and am now saving $70 a month, phone will pay for itself in a year and I am getting better cell phone service, win win.
I love the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back. Can you ROM that? Still, it's overpriced. Missing good design (6P was amazing), front facing speakers, waterproofing, wireless charging.
Have fun with Samsung's infamous habits of hyper-bloating the shit out of their stock ROM to such a severe degree that the entire device lags, freezes, and has random and unpredictable crashing and app compatibility issues. Have fun with the phone that, while it has among the best specs of the current scene, consistently scores the WORST on real-world performance among today's flagships. Have fun with your bootloader being locked down harder than alcatraz and having essentially zero freedom over the device. And have fun with the explosion. You don't buy a Pixel for bells and whistles - that's what the Play store is for. You buy a Pixel to have the most smooth and solid experience you can get from an Android device. Sincerely, a long-time Samsung user who recently moved to a Nexus 6P.
Heavy user of my XL for 2 years and it still as smooth as ever even going from Nougat > Oreo > Pie. From past experiences with Samsungs, Motorola's, etc, each update slowed the phone down more and more. This is the main reason I'm sticking with the Pixel line. I was thinking of upgrading to Pixel 3 XL but reconsidered because my original runs like new, why spend the money. Maybe Pixel 4.
abed haj yihia Not anymore! I got the Nougat update on my S7 edge a few days ago and it has this crazy smoothnes thing going on. Just like the Pixel. Unlike the Pixel, my s7 edge has gotten even faster than before. Fingerprint reader times have improved by at least 3. I put my s7 edge next to my friends marshmallow running s7 edge.
I'm about to hit the 2 year mark with my pixel in a couple months and it STILL runs so smoothly. With all other phones, it's been basically useless by the 2 year mark, but the pixel keeps going! And oh my god, the camera. It's a wonderful phone. I'm definitely moving up to the next pixel when I replace it.
@@MrTheManav Still enjoying it a lot. Camera is still among the best even considering today's phones imo, with its single lense obviously not in terms of versatility, but certainly when it comes to outright quality. Still running smooth with an update to Android 10 in sight. Screen still great, I have the 1080p one on the non-XL. Battery of course lost its max capacity over the last 2 years, still acceptable though, I can get through a day most of the time.
I really like the cinematography in the video , All white background , brings out the focus on the subject. Your voice modulation is one of the best among tech reviewers. Also the camera sample shots at 8:55 , awesome effort man . Thumbs up! 👌👌
Freemasons lie and scam for money, so of course he would take the money if offered. Many of these 'reviewers' have been taking cash from Apple for years.
+Red Hood It's made only for die-hard google fanboys. The phone is just inferior compared to the competition in the price range it is in. It's kind of marketing trick to cheat not-so tech savvy people into thinking it's similar quality as iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7 when in truth it's way inferior.
Thanks Marques. I'm one of the Nexus 6P owners that just got a replacement Pixel XL. This was the first thing I wanted to see. I respect your opinions on tech more than most people. I'd love to chat.

Five plus hours on Pixel4? Funny.

Same
I'm sorry Marques, but for the price they asking for, the speaker and the looks does come into account.
YouEnglish dude the iPhone speaker is just as shit as the pixel. People give the iPhone a pass through for some reason
tomar5e115 have you heard an iPhone 7 speaker? it's fantastic (coming from an Apple hater)
The specs? did you fall on your head?
tomar5e115 apple at least has stereo speakers. Bottom firing and from the ear piece together sounds way better than the pixel's single bottom speakers that can be easily muffled..
YouEnglish grab the LG V20
Who's watching this after the Pixel 3 launch?
Nujad Bolivar me
On my Pixel 3 XL
mine is even way down the line cus i just got it. Well I'm still an iOS user with a notch just trying see what's Android is like after all this year's I switched
And by the way I was gonna use the emoji for the first time and appear to look so terrible compared to iOS that I can't even use Any (-:
On my Pixel 3
Me of course
Fk the pixel. We want your sweater
It's on Amazon, he had a link in one of his previous videos. I'm getting it soon

Yeah they're very cheap
This video better be amazing, I waited so much!
ok good I'm satisfied damn

Bob stone As a matter of fact, I did.
Well, I mean, it isn't GoT, but yeah, I was, entertained.
you now it's his daily driver when you see the tesla App installed
Also, one thing I noticed on one of our in-store displays is that the Pixel has some seriously ridiculous stand-by time when not on a network. I switched on airplane mode and took it off a charger on a Friday, and by Friday the following week it was still on at 50% battery remaining. Pretty insane!
I disagree: No Sd-cardslot, not waterproof, Halos and lens blur- camera problems, no stereo sound and the mate 9 is much faster. This is definitely not the best android phone, only the most expensive.
Best in terms of software and camera. That's all.
Red Hood Camera has an hardware construction error. So definitely not the best.
The s7 edge blows the pixel out of the park. As do other phones that are actually cheaper
not the most expensive
alexdiezg Sorry, correct, Mate Porsche 😂
holy crap that camera is amazing. especially the part where it autofocuses in videos. The image of the car is so crisp.
Ayas Mishra i think it was recording in 4K.
TheMoises1213 yes it was.
iPhone is and will always be the most advertised and most popular and thus the best smartphone as long as most consumers and most manufacturers think its the best. Everyone who cant afford an iPhone wishes they could have one.
jaja we are simply talking about the camera on a phone and nobody even mentioned the iPhone. Yet here you are here Butthurt Apple fanboy.
Hiro Atibagos yes that was my reaction too. But maybe they wanted stabilisation to be handled by the main processor with a more sophisticated algorithm. After all the processor is overkill. Dedicated h/w does not always mean better. Using both might have produced less than desirable results. Just speculating.
God those Photos are awesome the Pixel really got an insane camera!
2019 aM I A jOkE tO yOu

samanvaya sharma you know what's really a dying breed? Nexus 6 owners. (yes, I'm one of them)
samanvaya sharma Same here. I'm just gonna chug my 6p along one more year.
Muhammad Keita If the second generation of pixel phones doesn't blow me away, I'm probably getting a 6P next year
My 6P has been good, but I feel like it started getting laggy earlier in its life than my Nexus 5 did. That much has disappointed me.
LoveStallion Same here. If only it could age as good as the N5... I bet I could still use mine if I got the camera and screen replaced. Let's hope the 6P lasts!
You're very knowledgeable and pretty easy to listen to. Thanks for the video!
This review was the last confirmation I needed to go forward with purchasing a Pixel XL. I've been loving it ever since. I'm actually typing on it right now! Thanks.

please don't reply with justification.
he said it right at the beginning, you need to use it to understand it.
what would be better a note 7 or this?
tech inc i love my display from my iphone 5s ,no need for 4k or shit
note 7 is dead... literally.. so, this.
yup, so that's why im buying the oneplus 3T that's coming out tomorrow
It's a great phone, but I think it's overpriced. The S7 Edge I feel has this beat in terms of tech. The S7 looks good, has water resistance and wireless charging, best in class screen. It also has a really nice curved screen. Those are just all things I expect at the maximum flagship price. It is a good phone but it comes up a tad short. If you pay 800 bucks for a phone you should get *ALL* of it not *most* of it. That and if I had it my way I still prefer the buttons off the screen for more screen real estate.
Hank Hill yep but not performance and camera
Hank Hill I totally agree
Hank Hill Well said!
Hank Hill
well in that case, if I pay (whatever the s7 currently costs) for a S7, I expect minimum 2 major Android updates within 3 months from the AOSP release without any bloat and perfect optimization with all the UI in the ROM following material design guidelines.
blueman24 I would too. But then again that's why I never buy phones that cost initially cost 800 dollars that become obsolete within a year. :)
Would you be willing to do a video on whether you should upgrade from the Pixel to the Pixel 2? Kind of like a “The Original Pixel, One Year Later” video?
watched the whole video in 360p .........did not regret
Damn I couldn't even watch 10 seconds that poor quality

Waiting for Samsung galaxy s8 and oneplus 3T.....
Pixel is bit overpriced...my frank opinion...
u crazy. u want a mid ranger than the best android can offer.
**hats off**
Rutvik K. I think instead of pixel, I can rather go for Samsung galaxy s7 edge as a premium device...
But for performance and value for money... Oneplus 3..fingers crossed
Keep it crossed. U gonna need it
Rutvik K. calling oneplus phones midranges. you dumb fuck.

Go back to your old intro music and never change it!! That was the best intro of all time...
Scattershot didn't take much to blow your mind. We've set our standards low in these times
Rocking my pixel
MTT Now! so true bro would love to own it
MTT Now! The Pixel is so much better than the iphone in every single way, except for water resistance:
•The pictures and videos are better; It's not over-saturated like apple users say, it does make more pleasing photos with great colors, better stabilization, and better dynamic range.
Am I the only one who thinks this phone looks dope?
Dario Rolle I think it looks interesting. Definitely not ugly.
Dario Rolle I like the way it looks
Dario Rolle I agree. not a fan of a flashy looking Samsung.
I thought it was until he mentioned it is a "wedge" shape. I don't like that.
Dario Rolle Ik I kinda like it too
I called google to complain about my 6p lag and they sent me this phone for $80!!!

I just did this last night. My battery was shutting down at 30%. Same result, Pixel XL for $80 :)
Really, Brand new? I have a nexus 5 that will shut down at 40%, do you think I could get one for $80??

For the features you get for the price, it is way overpriced. $869 for the XL and 128GB is insane. The S7 edge can be had now for 500-600. There is no way this phone is worth that much more. The software features will be ported and ROMed in no time. Swipe up to launch apps? Are you kidding, any good launcher can do that. Even with the nuclear device that is the Note 7, I'd still rather have that and take my chances. It is the better phone. Google is going the Apple route and charging more for less.
Just Another Microsoft Fanboy
?? International unlocked on Amazon for $605 sold by Amazon

He recently watched Doctor Strange xD as for the phone lol S7 EDGE in my opinion is the best android
i agree...the only place the pixel is better is in the software....but i still think stock android is boring
abed haj yihia Not anymore!

How is it? Did it slow down? Camera still good? Screen still good? Battery?
@@MrTheManav Still enjoying it a lot. Camera is still among the best even considering today's phones imo, with its single lense obviously not in terms of versatility, but certainly when it comes to outright quality. Still running smooth with an update to Android 10 in sight. Screen still great, I have the 1080p one on the non-XL. Battery of course lost its max capacity over the last 2 years, still acceptable though, I can get through a day most of the time.
do u get a screen burn in or anything like that ?
famii 317 Nope, never had that issue.

This phone would have been competitive if it were priced at $499. For $600+, I would never buy it
OnePlus 3 is still the best imo
Then buy the OP3. Its not made for budget tight people.
Muaz Qamar in EU start over 800€ lol
+Red Hood It's made only for die-hard google fanboys. The phone is just inferior compared to the competition in the price range it is in. It's kind of marketing trick to cheat not-so tech savvy people into thinking it's similar quality as iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7 when in truth it's way inferior.
