We've filmed in places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Japan, and many more places while backpacking and camping. Here's our take on how our cameras perform their jobs when out in the wild.

Couple of updates.
First, that manual focus issue at 7:11 is indeed a lens issue, and not a camera issue per se, but considering all of the Sony lenses I have used have this problem, I still think it's a relevant issue to bring up. Sorry for the misinformation though, that's indeed not a problem inherent to the camera itself, but the lenses.
Second, after more testing, I wish I had emphasized just HOW good the Dual Image Stabilization on the GH5 is. It's pretty close to miraculous. It's not exactly a replacement for a glidecam or a handheld stabilizer when you're walking around, but it's damn close. And when you're doing static shots, even on a bumpy bus or airplane, it's incredibly stable. One note though, it doesn't kick in until a couple of seconds after the camera is turned on, so just keep that in mind when you're shooting.
Also, the audio preamps on the A7s ii are far cleaner than the GH5. After using it more and more, there is a clear, noticeable difference. The GH5 is certainly still usable, but the A7s preamp is actually decent with a Rode Videomic Pro.

Finally someone who talks about the camera as a whole and doesn't just drone on about autofocus... Great video.
JamesDaily which has better autofocus?
autofocus is overrated ! you need it quick as sheet only if you shot VLOGS like LOGAN PAUL and you need to focus in 0.1 sec. otherwise its useless i mean in real life condition. who dafook needs quick autofocus? in bouth they are quick enough less the a second....so don't make a big deal out of some commercial-point advertisement and try to use it in real life condition, ok?
This is probably the best comparison review i've seen on RUclips because of the fact that it's not purely biased and also how it's portrayed to a personal level of use. Well done!
Smart video. Very well edited! Keep up the good work.
My head says GH5 but my heart says A7s II. #thestruggle
a7sii LOW LIGHT!
Caitlyn Johnston i bet your pocket says gh5 too
I went with the A7s II. Just bought it. I feel like user interface and design are luxuries that are just starting to unfold. All cameras have basic controls that you must must master to become a filmmaker and no matter the camera, you will eventually master the controls. I'm coming from a Canon 7D, I'm literally so pumped to get my new A7s II.
ahh. I am jealous. I think I want one camera and then my mind switches. I may just end up with the GH5 right now due to budget..and I think it will be the best all around in my price range.. but I think eventually down the line I will be owning something from Sony because those sensors are too hard to pass up.
Caitlyn Johnston gh5 or a6500 i wanna have pretty decent phot quality too.
The best GH5 vs a7s ii video out there, hands down!
indeed
So would you say that the GH5's low light performance is considerably worse than the A7Sii, or GH5 still performs fairly well? I'm upgrading from a t3i so I think either camera is going to be an upgrade in the low light department.
If the gh5 was a full-frame It would be insane.
lumix s1
MFT actually brings up a lot of possibilites, for example vintage lenses.
This is one of the best camera reviews and comparisons I’ve ever seen! Because it is based on actual usage! Many reviews are based on maybe a couple of days with the gear. Sometimes it feels like the reviewer is just listing all the specs and that’s a bout it. But this goes into depth about all the small quirks you’ve found and how it actually is to use in real life. It’s so much more useful than many other reviews. Thanks for making this.
(Yes, this is the second time I watch this... look, it just popped up in the suggestions okay! :P)
iv been searching weeks for a video like this thank you!!
This was a really fantastic review. Incredibly thorough and I love the emphasis on usability over straight specs. Can't wait to pick up a Gh5 soon and I'll probably hold out and see what the A7sii successor looks like.
Wow great review! The best camera review I've seen
This review was awesome. I'm a novice and out of all the reviews I've seen, this one was the most entertaining and easy to understand while being full of technical information. I'll probably get the Lumix
I love how concise you are and how you aren't repetitive. You keep the video entertaining with beautiful shots too! Great review!
What a great review. Showing actual footage shot by the cameras, as well as your own personal views of both units. If I had the money, you've 'sold' me on the GH5
Can you please make a video on how you make the time lapse videos?
Thanks.
1:30 A shallow depth of field is no good if it's out of focus. And what's with the super saturated footage? Perhaps it's time to calibrate your monitor?
I sold my A7sii for the gh5 a year ago. the 10-bit color, battery life, and no record limit are incredible features on the gh5 and mostly the reasons why I switched. gh5s handles low light well and metabones with ef lenses give great bokeh.
We recently got the GH5s and are really excited to take it out on a hiking and filming trip! And ya gotta love those bokeh balls!
Best camera review that I've seen on RUclips. I've wandering around for days to find an on-field review. Despite the documents from the manufacturers, we only know if it fit our need on each case. I'll go for the GH5 for cinematic purpose since the price dropped recently.
By far the best review I've seen on this subject! Thorough but not long-winded, well organized, and tons of useful *real world* experience and info. Extremely useful and valuable. A+ Thanks!
11:24 it is weird that you guys couldn't change the lens with gh5 release button placement.
Im using 5dm2 and the button placement is the same with gh5.
I could change lens with only my left hand. just grip the lens with your hand on top of the lens, thumbs facing your body and press the button using your thumbs. sometimes I just used the side of the thumb if i need extra grip. even changed 70-200 with this method.
Really appreciate the cinematography behind AA, it's well thought out and executed nicely. I think you guys even do your own music? I became a fan after that amazing Yosemite video
Great thorough review. I really enjoyed it. I'm a Sony guy myself who also bought the GH5. I've done a few mini reviews on the GH5. I just happend to subscribe to your channel about two months ago when I found your Yosemite video. Anyway I loooove what you're doing with your channel. Oh and don't listen to commenters who say you oversaturate your footage. I think it looks completely lifelike and awesome . Don't change a thing. That faded washed out look is the 2016 trendy beard of the video world. Anyhow keep up the awesome work.
Wonderfully helpful review. I’m still rocking my GH4. Articulating display is so helpful. Does your GH4 get any more use since the GH5 showed up?
I love my A7sii and it's the perfect camera for me. That being said, every negative point you stated is very true, and man I wish Sony would figure out better menus and ergonomics
Good video! A couple of really good things about the GH5 you didn't hit on are the new joystick button which FLIES around the menu system and is great fro moving the focus point, and also the "My Menu" customizable menu folder. Keeping all your most used menu items here really speeds things up.
I just ordered the gh5 a few hours ago then came across your video. Nice to see I made the right choice after a full day of research. I needed the Image stabilization and weatherproofing for my hikes. I almost got the A7III but decided not too. The flip view screen is super important because I am always alone. Hope to make some great stuff with it. Thanks for all the great videos. Kevin
You did a fantastic job with is! I see you got the older 12-35mm. They updated that lens with modern internals to take better advantage of the dual image stabilization. Maybe something to look into the future.
Really great product review. The narration is great and keeps flowing without dead-air or useless chatter. I look forward to watching your other videos. There's been a lot of press regarding the poor auto-focus of the GH5. You mention in a comment below that the GH4 was worse. Do you use the GH5 auto-focus, and if so, what did you think of it? That's about the only thing that is keeping some folks from giving the GH5 a try. Thanks!
This was really amazing Robby! So much better than anything else I have seen on the GH5. My wife has one order to upgrade her GH3 and can't wait for it to come in.
I will forever be grateful to your review....for the likes of people like me who are weighing up buying choices between black magic cinema cam...zcam...sony a7s2/3 and switching up from gh4 of old days.....this is a review ive always wanted to seek.....yes ive seen caleb pikes reviews....phillip bloom yada yada....but here you are comparing the gh5 to the sony and this is a blessing to many of us......i shot a documentary on the land speed records in the uk on the gh5 and was pleasantly surprised with the 4k stock....it was superb rich in colours....yet i do need to shoot in low light conditions....and well....m4:3 often struggles until say we add on the metabones speedboosters and sigma art lense say for expamle.....so genuinely thankyou for your lovely review....the footage bye the way looks really fab...and i look forward to watching your travel vids....best wishes and forever keep rolling.......thanks. Uk crew.
DUDEEEEEEE This was THE most helpful video for me right now weighing up GH5 vs GH4 vs Sony vs Canon and you just answered it for me in such a contructive and helpful way! Thanks so much, new subscriber over here!
+ChrisSearle thank you so much! Glad it helped
For the battery issue, you can find micro usb chargers that can charge two sony batteries at the same time. The charger can also run off an external battery pack. I go through batteries like crazy especially in the winter and this setup is 100% necessary in those circumstances. Great video, love your others as well!
External battery solution is good but is pretty unusable with what they are doing. The flimsy micro USB port will break very easily! Not to mention another cable dangling
oh I didn't mean connected to the camera directly. I meant to charge used batteries overnight so you only have to bring enough for a day.
Ah yes sorry I misread what you said!
Ed Tse care to share where u got the charger from? i mow through the a7sii batteries like crazy
thepixelninja1 you can search on Amazon for Sony a7 battery charger. I got the cheapest compact one and it works fine charging Sony and third party batteries.
I got the GH5 because of your videos but without watching this first, and I'm so glad I did. I got it for $1200 and I feel like it is such a steal. Thank you!!
No one mentions that but why are the "beeps" still on in "silent shutter mode"? It would only make sense, to put out all beeps when in silent shutter mode. This pisses me off every time. Most of the time,I need to take quickly a silent pic. But it takes ages to find both menue points and the shot is gone :(
Great format for reviewing the pro and cons of cameras. It is completely objective with real evidence provided from the past episodes, brilliant!
Hopefully allot of the issues such as display brightness, record button placement, battery life, autofocus etc will be addressed in the upcoming a7s3. Currently own the a7r3 and it's a miracle camera and possibly the best all purpose camera.
I just got recently purchased a nikon d7200 and now I'm considering getting something smaller and was wondering if the gh5 is smaller
I am a film making student. I was convinced 2 years ago to buy a Canon 5D Mark III with a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 and a Sigma 75-200mm f2.8 and batteries and cards for 2200 Euros ($2490). The lenses are barely used and cost around $1200 each (new). Should I sell everything except the cards and buy the GH5 with 1 or 2 lenses?
Nah man, just stick with what you got and make some awesome stuff. If you've already got something, I say just go with that, no need to waste your time thinking about what gear to use!
@@AdventureArchives There are smartphones nowadays that shoot better video quality than the Canon 5D Mark III. A photographer convinced me to buy the 5D, saying it was the best DSLR for video shooting. Thinking back, I am sure he took part of the money I paid because the store owner was his friend and would reward him for bringing clients.
If I want to become a film maker, editor, DOP or anything that has to do with cinematography, I'll need to learn how to use a real camera, how to use it's features and settings, and colorize log footage. Canon has nothing in regards to video, not even autofocus (which I don't really care about).
I am really angry for the fact that I own a very expensive camera with really lousy quality and features, while I can own the best Mirrorless for video shooting at a lower price.
I also need a Zoom recorder (the H5 or H6 preferably), a shotgun mic, a couple of cheap lavaliers and lots of lights. It's stupid and irresponsible to keep the Canon, while I can sell it and purchase a way better camera and lots of other tools I'll need for school, and multiple jobs afterwards.
I've owned the Canon for 2 years now. I have taken about 5000 photos, most of which have been school assignments, family reunions and events. I have shot 4 shorts for school (5-8 minute films) and a few video montages ("homework") with specific requests. When showing these films, I have been surpassed by multiple classmates in terms of video quality and dynamic range. And most of them own consumer camcorders with a static lens. Even when I get the urge to go out and take some pictures around town, I change my mind because of it's huge size, heavy weight and the attention I get from pedestrians (and the fear to get mugged). Uneducated people here think cameras cost more than a car.
Since the first video I took, I realized it's not a good camera. When it comes to photos, it's one of the best out there, but I'm not a photographer, and I can't even work with it. Every couple I have encountered wanted to have their weddings filmed, and they refused a photographer. With such great smartphone cameras, weddings don't really need a photographer....
@@Albanez39 Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong, the 5d mark iii is really crappy compared to lots of other cameras for videos. But you can certainly still use it in a pinch and make it look decent: ruclips.net/video/03HxtmEh0bo/видео.html I mean, at this point though, it sounds like you really don't like it, so yeah, probably just go ahead and sell it. The GH5 has gotten cheaper too, so you probably won't lose any money!
@@AdventureArchives Thanks for understanding :)
Just subscribed after the Yosemite film and then this. Great footage and (possibly) even better audio. Do you ever do how to style videos on your filming?
Regarding GH5 files 10 bit not working in Premier.
If you change to MP4 instead of MOV it will work in premier, and from what I understand you will not get any real quality loss
That's what I've heard, but I am using MP4. It works, but they lag horribly compared to the 8-bit. I haven't tried them on the latest update yet though.
Wow. Great information. Finally a good review.
this has been the best comparison video for these cameras ive seen. very well thought out, and reviewed in a manner that is suitable for my purposes as well. great job! And thanks for your input and opinions.
you can use the metabone speed booster which will give you similar result as the full frame camera. I use it for my GH4, but you will have to use manual focus in my case as I am using Nikon mount.
4:31 How about using an external battery pack? Connect it If you aren't using a gimbal, it would work out well for you.
Are there any special setup for natural colors like in the video?
Which one works best for snow in your experience?
This hand down the best camera review on these two cameras I've watched - well done.
12:05 that actually seems like a more normal placement for lens removal. Most, if not, all dslr's use that position
Which one would you guys recommend for making a music video that looks straight out of the late 90s/early 2000s....lots of light and lots of colour....not like today's artistic cinestyle less saturated output?
just wondering, what do you guys edit on? FCPX? and also what color filter do you guys use? It is a very vibrant, color oriented look. Greens pop! Just curious, because it looks fantastic!
where did you buy the batteries
Thanks for the review...very informative and helpful! If you could only buy one lens for the A7sii, which lens would it be?
that was a great hands on comparisson! ive seen quite alot a7sii reviews, but this one is the best by far! thank you so much for the video, it really showed aspects i did not know, regarding the use of an a7sii. cheers from Norway :)
If u go to aspc crop and digitily zoom 2x doesnt that leave the sony a7sii with a micro 4/3rd sensor? I wonder if that helps with the macro shots. (Over looking it I know)
True the a7s2 can see in the dark but those clips n the dark showing the northern lights and stars were all hazy n blurry? Is it some technical glitch or is that Al you can expect?
One of the best comp reviews of these two cameras! great job.
Nice comparision video, but i have a basic question, I'm was dealing with overheating issues with the Sony a6300 but I'm seriusly thinking in both cameras, perhaps the other issues of battery life, focus, ergonomics and others that I'm used to deal with it, but the most frustrating thing for me is the overheat, this really sucks I'm filming in the middle of the desert or places with more than 38° C just under the direct sun and camera turn off and there's no place to ventilate. My doubt is if the a7sII have this issue too. Thanks in advance if someone have expirience in this field.
Oh also the full frame as well as apsc mode is such a great feature of the A7 series (also buried down in the settings)
Great review. but please don't oversaturate your footage.
I like that better than washed out, ungraded shades of grey...
it looks oversaturated even on my sRGB monitor.. please don't to it that much :)
Maybe it`s just a unbalanced monitor you have there.
Sepehr Atefi yeah it's so bad.. especially the basket ball 180p slow motion.. that looked sooooo bad it's unbearable to watch
nope, it is oversaturated
I still don't get the fuss with low light performance on the A7SII, so little shooting I've done has been at night. Also in my experience if you want your night footage to have high production values you generally have to light it, even a little.
can you use a canon lens on either of those? in particular the a7s ii and the a6300 AND G7 and Gh5? :)
You're wrong about the switching manual to auto on the Sony. I have mine set to a custom button. One press and is switches
Where are these beautiful autumn shots at 12:40 from?
Hi, these are from Wayne National Forest which you can find here: ruclips.net/video/1GGUMFVJbPs/видео.html
Thanks!

Thanks! Found you guys recently. Also originally from ne Ohio, so using you as a guide to hiking the Midwest. Keep it up guys! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for this video, absolutly helpful. Do you think with the gh5 and the 10-18 mm 2,8 lens leica you can do also macro footage? Thanks a lot!
Please do more camera reviews in future! Best camera review ive ever seen!
I was thibking of getting a a7sii but im getting second thoughts, whats a good upgrade from a gh4???
Excellent comparison. Can't the A7S II use USB battery packs? That might help instead of lugging around all of those small batteries.
Very good review! A camera being water resistant is a huge plus at that cost.
Somehow I just knew you would come to that conclusion. You also use a A6300 or have you sold that camera?
I really love my A7s II but it does have some problems. I think I will change to the potential A7r III when that is released as I think it will incorporate some of the new features of the A9 and hopefully at a cheaper price.
I am too way too happy with my full frame camera to even try m4/3 as it can get quite dark in the winters in Scandinavia :)
awesome review btw
and you guys should really find some big tuber to collab with to grow the channel.
Kind regards
Jørgen
Very informative video, have you used the 1dx mkii? (or the ursa mini 4.6k). Also have you tried "EOS HD pro color" for sony a7sii, I use it because I didn't like the default sony colours (for non colourgrading)
Great review, I have been choosing between A7s and GH4 and as someone that colour grades I way prefer the A7s but I can imagine without grading it would suck.
very nice video and informative. I just got into studying more about photography and I purchased a G85 the little brother of the GH5. it takes fantastic photos in low light with the 12mm/f1.4 and 45mm/f1.2 Leica lenses. Have you tried those faster lenses on the GH5? perhaps the low light performance would be better for you?
Nice Video. What SD Memory Card did you use for the GH5?
Best real world dual camera review out here. Love the objectivity. But, honestly, man you should at least try to learn the advantages of 10 bit & color grading even if you wouldn’t use them. Additionally, I understand saturation is your preference, but damn dude. Some shots were so saturated that it looked like a cartoon
Love the review as I was on the fence about both cameras. Thank you! What lens do you recommend for the Panasonic GH5 for wide shots. I shoot a lot of things that need a wider view/
Good work Robby!
+Curtis Judd thanks a bunch man! I'm looking forward to watching your review you just posted. -robby
Curtis Judd - Yes, the Audio is very well done.
Good call - agree - they work well together as a set of business tools for a variety of shooting.
Great review. Glad to hear from someone who has actually used the 2 cameras vs a few labs tests
I wish people would test these cameras through more than just vlog stuff instead focus on more controlled lighting situations.
Thannnnk you haha I'm a film student and have not only preferred the Panasonic platform in similar ways but was still struggling with finding palatable comparison between the Sony line equivalent. This is the best explanation for video shooters I have found thank you!!
where can we find the hack to extend recording time on the a7sii?
The focusing (fly by wire) depends on the lens not the camera body. Part of the issues your having with the peaking and focusing on the A7sII is because it is a full frame camera, there is actually less in focus. Focus will always be more difficult on a larger sensor. The menu system is strange but I don't have a problem finding what I need. Record time nightmare? I shoot professionally and yes the record limit is not ideal I guess all my years of using both motion picture cameras with say a 10-12min run and older high end video formats with 30 minutes tapes the limit here isn't much of and issue for me. There’s always a need for a subject to take a break or find space between interview questions. It’s usually recommend you not use any stabilizer when on a tripod but I guess if it works on the Panasonic GH5 then use it, but I wouldn't expect that to work with any other camera. The Panasonic GH5 produces awesome video aesthetic images. The A7sII's images more rival the look of film and more higher end cinema cameras. It is frequently used as an B or C camera to be intercut with higher end cinema cameras where things like auto focus are not an issue. What's most important to your production, run and gun ergonomics or when carefully shot and graded very cinematic images at a comparatively low cost for the delivered aesthetic.
What a brilliant, unbiased review, so nice to see, great footage and explanation... looking forward to stretching my new GH5's legs!
GH5 wins clearly.
For low light, buy a speed booster ultra + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8
"Just spend another 1500$"
Of course.
Patrick Hinlopen doesnt matter, thats still cheaper
Exactly
Does it have to be of a certain mount? canon, Nikon? I think I saw somewhere that Nikon with the speedbooster doesn't auto focus while the canon does? Asking because I use Nikon for pictures but looking at gh5 for video
Absolutely excellent review! Fantastic sample video examples for everything mentioned! Thanks a lot for this!
Instant subscribe. This review is just amazingly detailed and very helpful. Im just about to buy my first cam to get into video making, and the GH5 and A7S was the 2 contenders, but after seeing your review i think im gonna go for the GH5.
What colour profile did you use at 13:15. (Flowers) This looks more than stunning!
Interesting video. I'm well aware of the incredible footage possible with the new Sony cameras, especially in low-light, but I'm curious as to how you would rate the Panasonic over something more industry-standard like a Canon EOS? I mean, when I say "industry-standard" maybe it's just the way I look at the camera market, like a few years ago when DSLRs first came into the mainstream it was all Canon vs. Nikon, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone shooting professional video projects on Panasonic cameras…? Or is it just that the Panasonic is all you have available?
+Peanut Turner yeah so it's changed a lot in the last few years. I have no desire to use canon in this level of camera. Their professional stuff is cool but the dslr line is terrible for video. The gh series and the a7s series are miles ahead in terms of video features (viewfinder, 4k, focus peaks, zebras, all the stuff I need) over canons dslr line. That's just for video thogh. Canons dslrs for photos is still great
That's really interesting to hear, thanks! the more I think about it, I own two Canons (a DSLR and a compact) and neither are really GREAT for video. If anything, the compact (a G7X) is better than the DSLR (an EOS 750D)!
It's nice to see a review that is done very professionally. You switched me back to my original choice.
Thanks for the best review comparison I've seen so far on these two cameras. You are too the point and well written. Cheers.
Great review , it really helped me to decide what camera I finally want to buy which is the GH5. Thanks a lot
Great real world review. Probably the best GH5 review I've seen. Although I wonder if simply using an extra LED panel or practical light for the dark campsite shots would make more sense than carrying an extra body and lens. I know sticking to available light streamlines the process somewhat, but a light just outside the shot can help a ton.
As you don't color grade, what settings do you use to get straight forward no editing good looking video?
Thank you for the video , it was really really helpful!
I was thinking to get the Sony a7sii because of the low light performance, but because of the fact that I’m a backpacker and a beginner with cameras, you showed me that the gh5 would suit me much better for lots of reasons I didn’t think of before!
Single np-fw50 weights 45 grams, even if you took 10 of those, they would practically add no weight in contrast to other equipment you're carrying anyway. Split that to three people and its ~160g a person. If the battery charging is a hassle, get a battery charger with more slots, or just add many of those in a extension cord.
Changing batteries still sucks, but getting a battery grip would help much, eventhough its adding bulk and a little weight.
What mount lens are both cameras? I've been trying to find online but no definitive answer. I believe you can get the a7s with an emount but what are the original mounts?
+Ryan Rector Sony is e-mount. Panasonic is micro four thirds.
Great reviews/comparison! I use the FujiFilm X-T2 F-Log to Atomos Ninja Flame, so it's nice to see what the other brands are doing. Always curious about new gear. Keep up the awesome work, it's much appreciated!
Great video. The things you touched on are things others haven't touched on. I learned a lot watching this, the little things and tweaks in the menu that you mentioned blew my mind. Have a song a6000 and I've had it with the screen and battery life. Thank you for piecing this together
Nice comparisons. I agree with you on the points made. Although that low light of the A7s II must be just awesome, especially the ability to record stars in video.
