- When Panasonic revealed the specs of the new Panasonic GH5, every indie filmmaker, including myself, were stoked. But how good is the GH5 in real life? Let's compare it against the GH4 in this quick video quality comparison.
In this video we compare:
- Low Light ISO
- Dynamic Range
- Crop
- Stabilisation
- Rolling shutter
- Slow motion
- Overall video quality
Ps. Looks like the internal Apple Prores recording in the GH5 was just a rumour. The text in this video is therefore wrong. It should be H.264 instead of prores :)
Since the 10bit in the GH5 won't give you better video quality than 8 bit (unless you do you heavy color grading) and as we didn't have much time to test the camera on location nor in post, we didn't include 10bit in this test.
To make the test as fair as possible, both cameras used a speedbooster together with the Sigma 18-35mm lens. We shot with the same settings and the same picture profile Cinelike D with -5 contrast (the rest was set to 0). I added the Filmconvert Pro LUT in post, without film grain.

Hello Anders. I love these older videos with your friends. This video is still relevant in 2023. I am thinking of buying a GH4 this year, and the Sigma 18-35 1.8, as a companion for my GH5 M2. Not all of us follow the usual pattern of always buying the latest and greatest, but I must be unusual in seeking the GH4. However, your superb comparisons confirm that it is a great camera that will put a smile on my face.
It will also be great for use in sketchy places in the third world where risk of theft is high, because it sells at a very low price now, and I wouldn't mind losing it like that.
As always, I appreciate the thoughtful videos you have produced over the years, and I hope you never decide to take down these old ones, because there are always people like me, who need this older content, like comparing GH4 and GH5.

questions, i use trhe GH4 and have had great luck with my Lexar Professional 1000x, but I can get some Lexar Professional 633x for good price, will they work, or is it worth it to pay more for the 1000x? They are both U3 rated. The 1000x has a 150m/s speed, while the 633x has a 95/s speed.
The GH4 holds up admirably, and even looks better in some shots. You have good reason to still love your GH4.
In which shot does it look betteR? I found the GH5 looking x2 better in every single scenario.
Totally agree, some shots the gh5 looked washed out compared to the gh4 in the side by side but looked fine by itself.

Thanks Anders for this comparison! Just a small question: How come the GH4 is that much brighter @ 2:10 compared to the GH5 if the settings are the same? Is that because of less information in the highlights (GH4) and therefore lower dynamic range?
besides slow motion, stabilization and shutter test, the footage of the GH4 in my opinion still looks crisper than the GH5. I'm viewing this video on my LG 34" curve monitor so I can pretty much see the details better than viewing it in a small monitor. how much is the GH5 and now for the GH4?

Thanks for the comparison! I upgraded from the GH4 to the GH5, I've been shooting on it for about 2 weeks. One thing I noticed initially was that it seemed like the dynamic range wasn't as good on the GH5 as it was on the GH4. Now I'm starting to get convinced of this after seeing your tests. (The food shot in particular, the rice is totally blown out on the GH5 shot.) I typically shot in the 'Natural' profile on the GH4, not in V-log, because that gives me the best skin tones for my typical shoots. I haven't tried V-log on the GH5 yet, which supposedly adds 2 more stops of dynamic range.. which is pretty much going to force users to shoot in V-log on the GH5, because as it sits right now with other color profiles, the dynamic range isn't as good.
With that being said, the slow motion clarity is improved over the GH4, even at 180fps. (a quick slow motion teaser of a drone I shot: ruclips.net/video/-50PxhgfJbg/видео.html ) Also, I really like the new 'Like709' color profile the GH5 has.

Great comparison, I can see myself adding the GH5 to my arsenal, mainly for the IS stabilization, 4k @60fps and slow mo. Higher dynamic range is iffy, but for those reasons, It makes me want one for sure.

Which Metabones speed booster? I take it, the XL 0.64x? Any issues with this given there has been talk about 'freezing' etc. Or perhaps you may have the new MB firmware for GH5?

Michal Priessnitz there is a work around that I saw in other videos on RUclips. It is not a true correction, but it is already something. It's something like turning the camera on while pressing the aperture control button on the MetaBones adapter.

Update: my GH5arrived & have updated the Metabones firmware to 2.7 for GH5. Confirmed: works perfectly, XL 0.64 & Sigma 12-35. No lockups, no vignetting (that I can detect). Seems to have moved straight along from what I had with the GH$, except now a way better camera with the GH5.

My GH5 with sigma 18-35mm and XL 0.64x freezing when i turn on camera. If i hold button on speedbooster then works, but focus peeking doesn't work. Somebody know what to do?
Andyax, thanks for the comparison. While using sigma and metabones, are you comfortable with AF while recording? (not the continious one)

If you shoot in log it really improves the lowlight in the GH4. You can get rid of most of the noise in post. It's not the camera that gives you amazing results, it's the person holding it. Always remember that.

2nd, I've had a GH5 for testing versus a GH4. And I've seen less noise on GH5 and better ISO (but same sensitivity), but I've used "Natural" profile and Vlog. And not CinelikeD at -5 (which is noisy for me). Best regards!

Hi Andy, can I ask you a quick question about the GH5? I am looking to possibly buy one soon. Is it possible set up two focus points in the camera and then activate each via a remote control. I am making a short film all by myself and so need to be able to pull focus when I am not near the camera. Any suggestions would be really appreciated :)

Since I saw your video about the GH4, the Sigma and the Metabones I am saving my money in order to buy the speedbooster. Just a few days ago I heard about the Viltrox speedbooster. Would you recommend it, have you heard about it at all? Best regards from Cologne.
Did you ever get that Viltrox and are you happy with it? I have always found the Metabones gives me the least trouble, and while the Viltrox is just as sharp in the middle, Viltrox is less sharp at the edges. Doesn't matter for most shots, but relevant for landscape work.

But how about your Apurture DEC Lensregain on the GH5??? There are no tests on the internet about this adapter setup. I'm curious if it is working properly. Please make a test about it Andyax!

PeeteBoxBattle No difference. The DEC Lensregain has the same bayonet mount, M4/3. Electronic connections on the Canon mount side, not on the camera side (if that makes sense) so it shouldn't cause any trouble
It should work great, since the DEC Lens Regain is independent (not connected to the camera through the adapter), and the GH5 has the same MTF mount :) The only issue could be to control the start and stop recording, as this is enabled through a cable from the adapter to the camera. But I can't see why that wouldn't work either :)
Hello +Andyax is it just me or GH4 appears to have a little wider Dynamic Range on your tests? Initially I thought GH4 was over exposed but I can see details on highlights, any thoughts about this?

Awesome video! Is the Metabones speedbooster XL 0.64 or the Ultra 0.74 used on the GH5?
TGVG I can tell you from experience the xl will vignette with crop sensor zoom lenses when shooting wide. I returned it and got the ultra and there's no vignetting. Hope that helps.
Hey, it looked like the GH5 had a bit lower dynamic range, both in the puppy and basketball tests. Do you think this is actually a sensor change or a cinelike change?

Hello. You are using a Panasonic Lumix GH camera and a Sigma AF 18-35mm lens with a Viltrox EF-M1 adapter. If you focus on the subject, and change the focal length of the lens (18 - 35 or 35 - 18). Does the subject remain sharp? The sharpness disappears on my camera, and I need to focus a second time. When using a Panasonic 12 -38, 2.8 lens, there is no such effect. I change the focal length and the subject is constantly in focus. What do you think is the cause of the effect with Sigma AF 18-35mm.

Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 vs Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 w/Speedbooster EF to M43? For the money which is better? The Panasonic 12-35mm has image stabilization... Although with the DEC I can use my other Canon lenses.
I bought the gh4 in January and then gh5 came out shortly after, is there any way to change them out or get a discount?
Sigma 18-35 has some focus accuracy issues when you have it set wide on Canon bodies..does this happen on Panasonic? Thx
Did you guys check focus properly? It often looks as if one of the camera's is slightly off, also with the dynamic range test, where both camera's in exactly the same setting? I appreciate the effort you took but this test feels a bit rushed.

Please someone enlighten me, but didn't the GH5 go up to just 60fps? I'm a bit confused how you are shooting 180fps. I am checking because I plan to by this cam next month.
