@@jaimedrum he was really good. They seem to be using the Charlie Cox in the next Spider-Man movie so it could possibly happen. It's hit or miss because Marvel could overreact to the show being bad by recasting Finn when the actor wasn't really the problem

I dunno.. Finn Jones is just not believable as a martial artist to me. Simu Liu showed more form in this trailer alone, then Jones ever did throughout 3 whole seasons on Netflix. As an actor he's pretty good, but watching him stumble sloppily through that choreography was just excruciating.
Bruh talk about a showdown. Shang chi would win but I think it would be pretty close. With all of Shang chi’s knowledge knowing all martial arts gives him quite the upper hand

@Radical Larry give them freedom and do corrupted things behind their backs or dictates them and do corrupted things in front of them
I think most people would be alright with a fair, just, and wise dictator. The issue is that people have an innate instinct to rebel against authority, even if good things are coming their way, and that its easier to be a corrupt dictator than a non-corrupt one.

That trailer took me from “I dunno a single thing about this guy” to “Gimme the goddamn movie right now!” Looks like Marvel’s A game for sure.
Eh, as a non-Marvel martial arts film I'd give it a look but I highly doubt they'll give us the same unf that we had with Ironman, Captain America, Thor.

A highlight for Shang Chi for me, was when he helped Spiderman create his Spidey-Fu...before Marvel comics forgot spiderman knew kung fu.....

As someone who was reading the original Shang Chi comics as they came out, I can say you covered his origin well. Thank you. I doubt Marvel will tie Shang Chi to Fu Manchu, even if the copyright on him has expired. There is too much "yellow peril" baggage with that character. Even featuring the Mandarin will be problematic, having the same sort of pulp elements that just won't work well in the 21st century. They'll probably find a way to feature the ("real") Mandarin, but they'll pretty much have to throw his comic book history away. You mentioned that Jim Starlin was the original artist, but I always associate its art with the unique style of Paul Gulacy, the series' artist for a long run.
I guess it was beyond the scope of your essay, but Marvel had other martial arts characters in response to the kung-fu boom. People will be aware of Iron Fist, although unfortunately his portrayal on Netflix was .. lacking. (I don't care that he was white. The actor playing him was out of his depth, as were the show's writers.) A major difference between the two characters is that Iron Fist had supernatural elements, while Shang Chi is 100% good biology and training. Another Marvel martial arts title was _Sons of the Tiger_ a three-man team brought together by a mystical broken amulet of which they each wear a part. The three men consisted of a white-guy, a black-guy, and an Asian-guy. Eventually they were killed off, and another guy found all three pieces of the amulet and became his own hero, The White Tiger. Covering all the bases, he was Hispanic. To bypass the Comics Code, Marvel even had a b&w kung fu magazine featuring stories of all of these guys. The stories could be grittier, but I never considered them particularly gory or adult.
Iron Fist needs redemption put him in a Shang Chi sequel and give him a new Disney Plus show with a new actor that knows martial arts
I really hope Shang-Chi leads us to IRON FIST film.
Shang Chi teamed up with Black Panther & Luke Cage during Reginald Hudlin's run. They also address the name change to Shang Chi's father. Makes a good comical moment.

Man I had every comic of the first however many years of the original run through the Paul Gulacy, Mike Zeck years all the Cat, Brynocki, Freelance Restorations stories, was one of my favorite books of the 70’s and 80’s

Oh wow! You're really fast. Great timing for today's trailer! Excited to see a new character enter the MCU.
On the one hand, I'm beyond delighted that they're FINALLY including Shang-Chi in the MCU. (wasn't too thrilled that they granted him "mystical powers" or some such, as his story..? was made all the better in that he *didn't* have any mutant/magical/inhuman abilities; He was just a mortal man, one trained FAR beyond nearly anyone else.) I don't mind his upgrades now, but I'm an old school fan of the character. And he was bad ass without such abilities.
On the other..? I am MIGHTY disappointed that they never reclaimed the rights to the Rohmer characters. (Always did like those flashbacks Sir Dennis had, to his younger days and his history w/Shang-Chi's father.) Granted, i like the idea that the whole "Fu Manchu" persona was a front, concealing Zhen Wu, and keeping him from public scrutiny, (and as HUGE middle finger to Sir Dennis) but again, I'm a fan of the original work. Not to mention I do miss all those nods & winks Clive Reston gave out that he was the nephew of another Legendary British Hero - Namely "Bond. James Bond." (Seem to recall once that Bond's actual name was J.B. Reston. Not sure which arc that was, though...)
I am, however VERY happy that they seem to be using Shang-Chi's very own Rogue's Gallery of Villains. One was clearly in the current trailer! (Razor Fist.) Which gives me hope we'll see other such Villains such as Pavane, Zaran and others. (Heck, Shang-Chi has even run afoul of Dr. Doom once or twice. Certainly enjoyed his banter w/The Kingpin, when he teamed up with the X-men.)
For once, I am truly hoping it works! Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I was a teen during this "Martial Arts Era". Bruce Lee, "Kung Fu" the show, Iron Fist, Men of the Dragon. I started studying martial arts, the whole 9 yrds. and of course Shang Chi was part of it. I don't expect too much out of movies these days, but I just hope they don't embarrass themselves, and with this character, any more than they have already.

This gonna be dope. The direction of this film is a 180 from your typical Marvel movie and will be refreshing for sure. That being said we need more character introductions like this and more smaller scale scope films not always about saving the universe.

The trailer was my first encounter for the character and I have to say I loved the trailer so much I think Shang chi could be my favorite character coming out of the new mcu era
Incredibly excited to see him in the MCU. Shang-Chi has been one of my favorite Marvel characters for years. I own most of the 70's run which is still one of my favorite comic runs. The trailer looks great. I hope the movie has the same cultural impact that Black Panther had. The character deserves it.

My favourite comic as a child and one of the reasons I have spent the last 35 years learning Chinese martial arts, as for the step by step way marvel tried to give real ideas of kung fu is only from someone who has never learnt it

Agree with good dictator theme. I was born in Yugoslavia and after war UK and US were afraid what president Tito will do, couse he was in "bed" with Stalin and during war took some orders from him but as the war ended he united Yugoslavia under "light" communism and didn't follow Stalin any more. We were very prosperous but 10 years after he died in 1990 Yugoslavia fell apart and we in Slovenia got our state with a minor skirmish. Sadly it was much worse for Bosnia Serbia and Croatia. But I digress. While Tito was in power (1945-1980) we flurished. That's why I can relate to a good dictator. Can't wait for the movie to come out

Pretty interesting how it's gonna turn up. Not surprised they're not going with the original Fu Manchu lore for obvious reasons, but didn't expect him to be portrayed as a son to the Mandarin directly.
What about a vid on Fin Fang Foom ? i heard there may be some Dragon stuff in Shang Chi. That would be great, the creature had a good start you said in your vid about Beta ray bill. Would love to know more and see how Marvel adapt the serpent :)
Yeah I heard they were going to mix both the characters of Fin Fang Foom with the Mandarin so yeah I agree, some Foom history would be cool too.

Shang Chi should have had a animated series back in the day.
I think the advantage of the Phase 1 superheroes is the fact that number of cartoons as far back as the 60s that they appeared in.
Actually, Jim Starlin, Steve Englehart, and Alan Weiss went to DC Comics to try to convince them to do a Kung Fu comic, based directly on the TV David Carradine Kung Fu western series. DC turned them down, having no interest or understanding what a phenomena martial arts would become. So those three guys went over to Marvel Comics, and spoke to Roy Thomas about the idea. Roy mentioned how Marvel still owned rights to at least one 'oriental' character, Fu Manchu. So, how'bout...the SON of Fu Manchu as the martial artist hero? The name Shang Chi came about by Englehart and Weiss opening a copy of the I Ching. Englehart already had the Chi, as spirit, in mind. From the I Ching they randomly chose Shang, meaning rising and advancing. Hence, Shang Chi: The rising and advancing of a spirit. And THAT's how the character came to be named!

Shang-Chi reminds me of IP Man the way he fights different opponents (11:27) but with a touch of being raised like assassin, evil father reminds me of Ra's al Ghul ( Batman)
