Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam, is a fictional comic book superhero appearing in publications by the American publisher DC Comics. Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker created the character in 1939. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics #2, published by Fawcett Comics.

Shazam has always been one of my favorite heroes ever since the Justice League Unlimited episode where he fights Superman then tells the league they aren't heroes.

Shazam!: Power of Hope is pretty much my favorite Alex Ross/ Paul Dini book. The art is gorgeous and the story is just heartwarming.

HE has slowly grown on me and now I don't look at him as a superman rival.
When I first heard about the concept of his character as a kid who said a magic word and turned into a superhero, I thought it sounded kind of dumb but having actually looked into and learned about the character it actually works really well.
Shazam sucks I prefer Black Adam. Anti villains/anti hero's have better depth

As an orphan, myself, from the age of 4, I think Billy Badson is the epitome of super hero ideals. Sure, Superman is great and strong and selfless, but Billy has a real morality that was born of strife and loss. Superman lost as well, but his loss was so beyond anything we could comprehend. I mean, try imagining life being the only surviving Earthling. Crazy, right?
Billy was just a street kid who got lucky and was recognized for the value of his underlying nature. He could be anyone, really. So long as they are kind and trusting and selfless, anyone could fill Billy's shoes. That's what makes him so great, because you'd expect a kid in his position to be bitter or jaded or corrupted in some way, but Billy is pure goodness. Despite his horrible circumstances, he kept his spirit up. That's keen.

But a 16 yr old who isn't allowed to work can only buy so much, so pirate sites helped me. But I'm definitely buying shazam #1

I was going to try the new series, but based on this video I'm now unsure of the history. I'm sort of working my way through the New 52 books and now I'm wondering if I should read New 52 Justice League before the new series. But then again, after "Justice League: No Justice", so much of the Justice League history/teams have changed I'm not sure if New 52 continuity is as relevant as it once was pre-Rebirth & Doomsday Clock.

Love Shazam. But the writers dont get him. He should be a mix between Batman and Superman. He has Solomons wisdom, and should use it, but they write him as a lunk headed goody too shoes. Stories where morals are questioned, there are no easy answers, values, instead of easy "fast, powerful etc", they should "smart, overcome unbeatable scenarios with logic and inner courage, and faith".
That would be a book to read.

He's been a lunk-headed goody too-shoes since 1939. His original comics bore strong influence from humor strips like "Thimble Theater featuring Popeye." He wasn't ever meant ot be a serious character (see wartime Captain Marvel Jr. for that). The wisdom only comes into play when necessary.
@Damien Perry Wisdom and intellect are 2 very different things (apples & bananas). Wisdom doesnt know how to build a bomb intellect does. But wisdom tells you whether you should use it, or not.
Solomon still was still susceptible to being led asstray( as he ended up worshipping many false idols) So wisdom doesn't mean he isn't corruptible or susceptible to making dumb decisions!!!
Shazam is also a child so you have you to take that into account
I don't like that they call him Shazam now. I don't know why they didn't call him Captain Thunder (like they did on their test run where he showed up in Superman comics). Shazam could still be the name of the wizard and the magic word to call down the lightning. It would be much less awkward than it feels calling him Shazam.
When I was a younger kid Shazam Piqued my interest. I first saw him during the Justice League Unlimited cartoon and was supremely geeked when he transformed back into kid. A couple of my favorite characters have transformed with catchphrases; American Dragon Jake Long "Dragon Up", Danny Phantom "I'm Goin' Ghost", Ben 10 "It's Hero Time+The Name of This Alien". I was raised on that cheesy ish, and I can't wait to see it on the big screen!!!

Considering how shitty Marvel has written Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) , Billy should get back the Captain Marvel name. He’s been more of a hero than Carol has.

First heard about the character in the 2000s and he was called Captain Marvel. Read the 90s era comics owned by my friends older siblings and he was called Captain Marvel. The DC Animated movies and cartoons show also called him Captain Marvel. The only people who seemed to believe he was called Shazam were casuals and people who didn't read his comics but saw the title. The Marvel made another legal move in the 2010s that finally got DC to just throw their hands in the air and universally call him Shazam when they rebooted into the New 52. But to me, he's Captain Marvel.

You missed the "Captain Thunder" appearance in Superman #276 in 1974! I was a big fan of Captain Marvel (aka Shazam) and Superman at the time, and I remember the story (Yes, I'm an "old fart") and how excited I was by it. Search it out.
They never called "Shazam" until the 2013 revamp. He's always been Captain Marvel.

I always thought Shazam/Captain Marvel was an cool concept that always seems to be fumbled. His stint in the Young Justice cartoon was very cool, especially getting to be the bridge between the Team and the League

I started with the 70's TV show and cartoon by Filmation.
Captain Marvel should be a member of the Young Justice animation SERIES. After all he still has the mind of a young man.
Personally, I am a BIG FAN of the "SHAZAM!" comic book franchise for years. I also feel that the name of "Captain Marvel" seriously BELONGS to that franchise, with all due respect to Marvel Comics.
DC acquired him and nerfed him as a kid in mans body. Now you never see him using the wisdom of the Gods. Hes not Captain Marvel anymore. Two separate identities decades before Firestorms. Telling kid jokes and being a rookie amongst the JL. Terrible.

Captain marvel comics from fawcett comics was selling better than superman so they sue fawcett comics. Then fawcett comics gave up. Years later DC buy the rights to shazam. D!CK COMICS is now trying to earn money from a stolen character.

I'm disappointed you don't mention the fact that after the lawsuit Superman becomes, literally adopts everything that is, Captain Marvel violating the copyright grounds All American and Detective sued from.

Slightly disappointed that you didn't mention that Fawcett licensed the character for a series of reprints to a British publisher, and when the license ran out they got artist Mick Anglo to make their own bootleg Captain Marvel - Marvelman - which was published through to the 60's... then rebooted in the 80's in British magazine Warrior and continued by Eclipse Comics as Miracleman.
I've always preferred his transformed character was separate from Billy. Captain Marvel was his own character that essentially shared a physical body with Billy Batson
Great video man. I became a Shazam fan when I was a kid watching that episode of Justice League Unlimited when he fought Superman in Lex Luthor's city. He's an amazing character & will always be the true Captain Marvel.
I find the Wizard Shazam equally as interesting as Billy Batson Shazam (Captain Marvel).

I am a long time fan of Shazam. One of the first comics I picked up was the reprints of the Fawcett comics way back when.
Shazam news is usually interesting. I like the origin story Billy meets that old man that changes his life the graphic novel was impactful when I found a copy at the library. Im on the side of Fans that wish for a honest story line away from the comic drama enough to tell an impactful story about Shazam getting powers that represent all the lessons the old man explains about in getting the power of S.h.a.z.a.m.

Having sprung from the five and ten cent comic book era I clearly recall those Fawcett comics. If the truth be known, I PREFERED Cpt. Marvel/Shazam to Superman because I could, as a young, human boy, relate to the character better than I could Superboy/Superman.
The one true Captain Marvel...
So in my history class during high school the teacher would sometimes do random trivia and once there was a question along the lines of, "What was captain marvel's name changed to... etc." Now these were usually pretty heated and me and the guy next to me yelled out SHAZAM and the whole class just stared at us for knowing the answer. This is also how I learned he was into comics and we had some good times talking about those.

A stranger lured a young boy into an underground subway terminal to meet an old man? Yikes! Times have sure changed. That story would go a whole different way if that took place today. That little boy wouldn't become Shazaam, he'd probably become the main witness in a child molestation trial.
Captain Marvel remains my favourite character. Alex Ross did a great job with him in Kingdom Come

The Original Captain Marvel.. his name lost to "The LEGAL" Captain Marvel which is... well now its carol but the name had been "Legally tossed around" from mar vell to monica to the children and who knows who will inherit the moniker so they can "legally" retain it.
Frankly, I trust Geoff Johns enough to believe he will make it interesting enough that Shazam is a mainstay in comics

My comic knowledge is limited and a bit above basic due to like the 90s cartoons and personal research. I was born in 1971 and remember the real actor tv show that was on Saturday mornings, just after the cartoons stopped, around 10:30 a.m., right before Wild Kingdom.

2019's 'Shazam!' is almost perfect and officially becomes my number one favorite DCEU movie, can't wait to see the sequel in November 2022.
A fictional mortal adolescent boy turned into an adult-looking but also a super powerful hero with all super powers/abilities from Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury after said "the magic word."
We truly wish this generation's DC writing people could stop holding back about Billy Batson's true potential during 2020s.
Here's what always bugged me with the whole Marvel and DC dispute when it comes to Captain Marvel, what is the protocol for Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel? Have they change their name or did they keep it and Marvel doesn't give a crap about it to make DC change their names as well?
I like captain marvel and the marvel family it makes his stories unique especially the idea of a kid becoming a superhero and what a normal kid will do as a superhero, also black Adam is awesome with his own secret country, and black Adam contrasts captain marvel as the naive kid, and jaded adult

So glad you made this video, I think a lot of people saw the trailer for Shazam and were like "Hey this is funny and different but who the F is this guy?". Now I already knew a lot about him but I never realized he was shuffled around THAT much.
I feel bad for Shazam. Once more popular than Superman, he's been so mishandled over the years. I hope the upcoming movie does him Justice(heh) and we can start seeing solo comics and success for Shazam.
Tbh, I hope he's a mixture of classic Shazam and Darkseid War Shazam. I felt like because of where/who he was getting his powers from (Old Gods of Urgrund) and the fact that he's THE CHAMPION OF MAGIC and EARTH'S MIGHTIEST MORTAL it only made sense to alter his power set some. Personally it would have easily put him on par with Superman only on the magic side, plus I would love for him to eventually join/team up with Justice League Dark.
