The glue that kept The Hollies together, regardless of who else was / is in the group. I have to wonder; would there be a CSN without Tony Hicks? What would Graham Nash be without him and his years working with Tony and The Hollies?
Yes indeed! He had an interesting nose ( profile) and impeccable ear. I was way too young to notice in the 60s/70s but I remember The Hollies ' beautiful songs and melodies
Wow that was awesome! Hicks on lead vocals and playing bass, killing it, no doubt. Must be 1972 maybe after Clarke split? Bobby Elliott's such a great drummer
that's because he is the third harmony (his voice must sound somewhat like Allan's after years harmonizing together) I bet all of you would like him to sing a handful more songs but... I also guess he was quite shy to do that (just look at him singing his verse on Carrie Anne and Allan and Graham mocking of him) 🙃
Absolutely love this song and video!! The original version has brilliant harmonies but it's such a refreshing change to see Tony Hicks singing lead vocals. To answer some questions that have been posed about this clip, it's said that Mikael Rikfors had issues with his English, so as Tony cowrote this song, it's reasonable to assume that it made sense for him to sing the verses and Mikael Rikfors belt out the chorus. Also Bernie Calvert was originally a keyboard player so he dropped into that role (check out videos of Hey Willy for further evidence of this) as required. This video is my first introduction to Rikfors, and I have to say I'm suitably impressed!! His voice is awesome and he can really play guitar and harmonica. I'm going to track down more of the Rikfors era Hollies for sure!!
In 1972, the Hollies got back together and put out an album. Hits from that album included "Long Dark Road". At the end of the 1960's and beginning of the 1970's, Graham Nash was joined by David Crosby from the Byrds and Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield to form Crosby Stills, and Nash. Later in 1969, Neil Young, who was also with Buffalo Springfield, joined the trio.
First time I see Tony Hicks playing the base guitar, and singing this song. He wrote this song, and he's the only one I recognize from the original band.
Nash had left three years earlier being replaced by Terry Sylvester on rhythm guitar. Alan Clarke had gone solo so the band brought in MIkael Rickfors, the excellent Swedish singer, to take over He sang lead on their hit "The Baby". They did two LP's without Clark, "Romany" and "Out On The Road". Both are top notch. Bernie Calvert was playing keyboards. He'd been brought in to takeover bass duties from Eric Haydock way back in 1966. Bobby Elliott was playing drums of course.
He wrote this song about his break up with then girlfriend Jane Lumb. He takes the lead vocals with much more confidence on him than before (if you listen closely to the studio version of this song, you can hear that in fact it's Tony practically taking the second voice, clearly close to Allan's lead. He would perfect his lead- singing skills around this time when Allan's gone)
Tony plays bass on a few of their performances, when Bernie played organ or piano. Terry also plays the bass at least once live, that's in an Allan Clarke performance.
@@robertcohen9616 I agree. I was shocked by what all went down on the stage that night. They basically ripped the Mic out of Terry's hands when he started singing. Terry certainly earned his stripes and didn't deserve that embarrassing treatment.
Love this! I think it was from 1973. I LOVE to hear Tony sing, but I am wondering why he was singing lead on all the clips I've seen from this concert.
mr terry sylvester played an impeccable role with the hollies... Without Allan Clarke the group kept its style and Sylvester's second voice is a hallmark of the band... Terry Sylvester was a great wasted member, underappreciated, limited and envied by Clarke & Hicks….
Love that the song suits Tony Hicks' voice not to mention that he was sooo cute here. Altho Allan Clarke has the best vocals, this song will not suit his voice.
I like this the best out of the Rickfors era performances. Mikael has a great, powerful rock voice but itdidn't "fit" the range of the Hollies songs that Allan sang lead on, and sounds strained on them. Mikael totally nailed this one when he came in on lead vocal. Tony on bass, Bern on organ and Rickfors on lead and harmonica. Terry backing up on his Tele playing rhythm. He and Tony's chorus is a a great counterpoint to Rickfor's lead.
well its over my english brother... mean while in the past 10000 years I met a girl named mellissa, and she is not over, she is a fresh begining...thank you Lord
Ron RIchards doesn't like Bernie Calvert, so he felt Tony should play bass, Terry on rhythm guitar, and an invisible lead guitarist (guitar solo at the end, but you can see Terry isn't playing it, so it has to be someone who disappeared (like Charlie Brown))
Hahaha! It's true though. Richards didn't care for Calvert's playing and said so quite blatantly on the liner notes to one of their Greatest Hits LP's. I thought it most unseemly.
A very talented Mr. Hicks, indeed. He plays guitar, bass guitar, banjo..an all around musician.
The glue that kept The Hollies together, regardless of who else was / is in the group. I have to wonder; would there be a CSN without Tony Hicks? What would Graham Nash be without him and his years working with Tony and The Hollies?
Tony Hicks one of the really good guys of rock/pop music. ..
Yes indeed! He had an interesting nose ( profile) and impeccable ear. I was way too young to notice in the 60s/70s but I remember The Hollies ' beautiful songs and melodies
Tony Hicks Excellent! I love the way he was singing this song
I love the Hollies and Tony Hicks is really good singer keep singing more Tony.
Love Tony. Singing and the guitar playing is awesome
I really wish Tony sang more! This is great - thanks for uploading this.
Love that Tony’s singing lead ❣️This live version rocks ‼️Tony’s killing it on lead guitar ❣️
Tony's playing bass guitar in this one.
No that’s Mikael Rickfors on lead guitar!
the wonderful tony, many thanks for sharing x
One of their BEST songs!
beautiful song, an the harmonies are un equaled, one on the greatest groups ever,,,
Love to hear Tony sing lead.
Me 2
I love Tony Hicks he has a great voice
Great dynamics of the Rickfors/Sylvester years of the Hollies...Thank you!
Great live performance. They really nailed it!!!
How gorgeous Tony is!
Tony, su presencia divina en el escenario... única ❤️
Tony y su guitarra mágica,ah!! ademas lindo overol...todo e'l es guapisimo
Wow that was awesome! Hicks on lead vocals and playing bass, killing it, no doubt. Must be 1972 maybe after Clarke split? Bobby Elliott's such a great drummer
Allan Clarke as the lead vocalist of the Hollies is great. Tony Hicks is right up there with Allan.
that's because he is the third harmony (his voice must sound somewhat like Allan's after years harmonizing together) I bet all of you would like him to sing a handful more songs but... I also guess he was quite shy to do that (just look at him singing his verse on Carrie Anne and Allan and Graham mocking of him) 🙃
Love this version of the band 💕!

There are some wonderful Rickfors era tracks! ‘If It Wasn’t For The Reason That I Love You’ is the best IMO 😄
@@imogenbebb9571 thanks for the recommendation, I'll check that one out!!
I love this song and the "Distant Light" album

tony hicks iz totelly awesum Beutiful
Excellent song+performance !! But must admit that i miss Allan Clarke !!
Thanx !!!

Bobby Elliott was playing drums of course.
apart from bobby on drums of course,
The original line up: Clarke, Nash, Hicks, Don Rathbone (he featured on their first two singles before Bobby Elliott replaced him), Eric Haydock
He wrote this song about his break up with then girlfriend Jane Lumb. He takes the lead vocals with much more confidence on him than before (if you listen closely to the studio version of this song, you can hear that in fact it's Tony practically taking the second voice, clearly close to Allan's lead. Thank you Anthony - Wow this is great!
I love to hear Tony sing❤
INCREDIBLE!! I love this!!
Thanks for adding this video Anthony! Very good quality! Ron
I think Tony Hicks is an amazing over looked guitar player. He's always been my favorite Hollies.
this is actually better than the studio cut...
I would be off my rocker dancing, too!
Tony Hicks aquí se feliz , libre, mucho mas expresivo en su emociones.
Really brilliant.
This arrangement would have been a bigger hit for them!
Okay but sounds better with the phenomenal Allan Clarke singing this song.
I liked Alan Clarke. But Graham Nash and he were dicks to the other members when inducted to R&R Hall of Fame.
@@robertcohen9616 I agree. I was shocked by what all went down on the stage that night. They basically ripped the Mic out of Terry's hands when he started singing. Terry certainly earned his stripes and didn't deserve that embarrassing treatment.
The man was drunk
No Allan Clarke...No Hollies
Love this! I think it was from 1973. I LOVE to hear Tony sing, but I am wondering why he was singing lead on all the clips I've seen from this concert.
Because Alan had temporarily left the group for a year or so.
mr terry sylvester played an impeccable role with the hollies... Without Allan Clarke the group kept its style and Sylvester's second voice is a hallmark of the band... Terry Sylvester was a great wasted member, underappreciated, limited and envied by Clarke & Hicks….
Yeah!
Thanx !
The Frontman Mikael Rickfors?
Great number, where is this recorded? And could you upload more from this concert? SUCH an energy from the entire band!
Love that the song suits Tony Hicks' voice not to mention that he was sooo cute here. Altho Allan Clarke has the best vocals, this song will not suit his voice.
No Allan Clarke :-(
The studio version of this was better. Those deep low organ chords made this song special.
The organ on the studio version was played by none other than Gary Brooker of Procol Harum.
Great video, thanks for posting Anthony, is this from Midnight Special ?
It's from ABC's In Concert.
1st Albam I Ever Bought...
Anyone know about what year this was.
I like this the best out of the Rickfors era performances. Not the same group without Alan Clark and Graham Nash
You cut off the drum roll at the end Anthony.
Where's Bernie? (Also, why did Bobby have that ridiculous wig...)
Bobby was having hair loss issues and Bernie was playing keyboards.
well its over my english brother... mean while in the past 10000 years I met a girl named mellissa, and she is not over, she is a fresh begining...thank you Lord
why was Tony playing bass instead of lead guitar
The bass player is playing keyboards.
Also, Tony is the fat one
Hahaha! It's true though. Richards didn't care for Calvert's playing and said so quite blatantly on the liner notes to one of their Greatest Hits LP's. I thought it most unseemly.
Im pretty shure Mikael Rickfors is playing the lead at the end...
im sorry but... where's Alan Clarke?
Allan Clarke retired from the group. Surpass it.
This was during an Alan Clarke solo period during which the band recorded two excellent albums "Romany" and "Out On The Road".
pero esa no es una guitarra, es un bajo D:
