Edward Van Sloan (Van Helsing) does a masterful job of portraying a man who ALMOST succumbs to Dracula's considerable powers--we get the impression of Van Helsing battling through a fierce storm that nearly sweeps him away, but his own will is so strong that he resists, much to Dracula's dismay and surprise. By resisting Dracula--perhaps the first and only mortal man to ever do so--Van Helsing wins his enemy's respect.
It's remarkable how powerful the scene is without a soundtrack. A part of me is always tuned in to atmospheric music in modern movies, but here, the scene is made stronger by framing it in silence and letting it thus develop. Mesmerising performance from both these gentlemen!
Lugosi's incredibly powerful work with his outstretched hand clutching Van Helsing through the distance between them, and then slowly closing his fist and bringing him in has never been performed better. Nowhere, no one. And to your point...silence. Screenwriters today would have filled that void with unnecessary dialogue. This scene is so incredibly powerful. So sorry that Lugosi never got the kudos due while he was still alive...always in the shadow of Karloff (certainly no demeaning Karloff here in any way).
I was just about to comment in this regard. Many reviewers have complained about the lack of a soundtrack but as much as I love soundtracks - this one required none.
This is the greatest non fight scene of all time in modern movies these days there’s always big epic fight scenes and final fight scenes in movies especially in mcu movies but here it’s just Van Helsing pulling out a cross to get Dracula out of the house brilliant way of doing fighting without any actually fighting
They DO meet, but you are right in that they DON'T have a one-on-one like this one. I like the novel very much, but I love this kind of rivalry for them better!
Absolutely LOVE Van Helsing’s disgusted/unimpressed look as Dracula flees, cowering at the sight of the cross. He’s just a man, a normal man and he bravely stood before a centuries old demon
it's even funnier in the spanish version. Van Helsing pretends to be controlled by Dracula and comes toward him. Then Dracula tells him to put the crucifix in the box. Dracula covers his eyes with his cape and asks something like "Did you do what i asked?" van helsing replies "yes" Dracula lowers his cape and then van helsing flashes the crucifix at him and then the count runs off yelling and screaming.
I love that in this era there was no background music so the silence makes the scene more eerie. I miss horror films like this even though I wasn’t born in the 20th century.
Dracula: Van Helsing! Now that you have learned what you have learned, it would be well for you to return to your own country. Van Helsing: I prefer to remain and protect those whom you would destroy. Dracula: You are too late. My blood flows through her veins. She will live through the centuries to come as I have. Van Helsing: Should you escape from us, Dracula, we know how to save Miss Mina’s soul, if not her life. Dracula: If she dies by day. But I shall see that she dies by night. Van Helsing: And I will have Carfax Abbey torn down stone by stone, excavated by a mile around. I will find your earth box and drive that stake through your heart. Dracula: Come here. (1:07) Come… here. Van Helsing: (1:26-1:57) Dracula: Your will is strong Van Helsing. Van Helsing: (2:04) Dracula: More wolfsbane? Van Helsing: More effective than wolfsbane, Count. Indeed. (2:17)

It is curious how Harker and Mina are Protestants and despise the Catholic religion (Harker says that a crucifix is a pagan fetish) but throughout the novel these symbols, both the cross and the Eucharist, are the only ones effective against vampires.

Tbh, the part where Dracula went in for the kill after saying, 'indeed', was kind of terrifying in its own right
Everyone would be terrified except Van Helsing.
A brilliant scene, two strong willed men confronting each other. Also this scene turned Van Helsing into one of my favorite characters in cinema
He has come to be known as the anti-hero amongst those who romanticize Dracula, but we know better.
