  • Whether you like Richard Mille or not-and it’s a hotly contested topic-you have to at least acknowledge that the avant-garde brand does things a little differently. Since the release of the 2001 RM001, Richard Mille has chosen to define the watches it makes by going down a different route to traditional Swiss watchmaking-and here are five things that particularly stand out.

To be honest, when I first saw/heard of Richard Mille, I could not understand why the watches are so expensive. When looking at AP, Patek, Vacheron, I can see as the craftsmenship stands out. Now that I see more and more, I can see why they are priced the way their are. I find the style, though, is too bold for me. I still enjoyed the more traditional style. Great video. Chromium-rich jewels (red) usually withstand abrasions caused by constant friction much better than clear jewels. For pinion jewels, where area of friction is literally a micron-wide point its not a problem. Pallet jewels on the other hand have much wider area of friction, the use of chromium-rich jewels is more appropriate.

BTW purple rubies would stand out beautifully) and other stuff. Custom movement is for anything above say $15 grand a necessity. Sorry RM, me as well cannot see where the ridiculous money goes. My only complaint is that so many of them are difficult to read the time on as so much thought has gone into producing some incredible piece and then showing off the movement like in this watch. I wish they would do more to make them functional (i.e. useful for timekeeping) as well as brilliant.
Perhaps they should make one for me to practice this idea, I'll 'test' it for them ;-)

That's actually the first Richard Mille that I like the look of. All the others are pretty much illegible to me, but there's something about the time only 'simplicity' of the RM055 that I like.

Even to the rich, it must be odd when you look at what's on your wrist and realise you've paid 150k for a hand wound high end chinesium time piece. I'd rather a g shock and a Ferarri 458 thanks. With change for a couple of Submariners.

People buying a 150K watch like this already have a Ferrary, Bentley and 10 other cars, Pateks, Langes, a yacht, few houses and a private jet. So it's not a big deal as it is for most people.

2:30 isn't titanium about. 40 to 45% lighter than steel (not less than half) and has a higher strength to weight ratio than steel, which means that a watch of the same dimensions in steel would still be stronger, but at a heavier weight?

I appreciate the overall shape, as well as the case, but I don't enjoy looking at any RM dials (or lack thereof). They're messy and confusing to look at. I feel that a more refined dial is needed somewhere in the RM line.

did anyone else notice some rather suboptimal oiling on some of the jewels? One of the train jewels pretty obviously has oil on the flats, and the escape wheel has bubbles in the oil on one side.
Look at 3:32 on the 4th wheel, and 5:35 in the escape insetting. All sorts of crap floating around in there

Not my taste but its amazing how RM has created a market and is successful. Perhaps its most recognisable feature is the case shape which funnily enough is fairly traditional. Interesting that it RM suffers from the criticism that the Royal Oak or Hublot did.

    2:33 "..[titanium] doesn't melt until well beyond 1500 deg. C, is anti-magnetic..."
    1. Titanium *burns* in air at temps well below 1000 C. It also burns in pure nitrogen gas, starting at 800 C. Do NOT try to melt titanium! 🔥
    2. Titanium *is not* "anti-magnetic", it is paramagnetic (weakly attracted). Magnetic fields easily pass through it and will affect the movement.

Speaking as an Industrial Designer, RM has managed to brilliantly appeal to the people who have more money than sense. The net profit from one of these watches is insane (maybe 80% a piece) Just think that you could buy a house for the money you spend on something like this. High-End plastic at it's finest.

    • @crnkin2
      @crnkin2 5 лет назад +6

Speaking as an Industrial Designer and businessman, you're probably out by at least 200%. Last time I checked Titanium isn't a polymer either?

6AL-4V Ti is about 5x more expensive than 316 SS by the ton but 1/2 the density so roughly 10x the price per watch. It's ok though, your opinion is cheap too.

Rolex with Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Jack Niclaus , Arnold Palmer, should sell at least $1 million a piece.
