Another east way to get carrots spaced a bit apart is to use pelleted seed. Baker Creek Seeds has several varieties available this way. The individual carrot seeds are in a little ball of white clay about the size of a BB. Makes it easy to grab them and plant them spaced a bit apart. Also you can plant carrots without thinning if you just scatter the seeds. If they come up about 1/2 inch apart or so you will get a similar amount of carrots from a space as you will from thinning them. (Assuming good soil and adequate water) I like bigger carrots for cooking.
