- Sabine Wren will be one of the first apprentices in Star Wars without a strong connection to the force. While some might see that as a bad thing, I think it will actually make for some extremely deep character development and could make the overall story much stronger.

Honestly the fact we don't have more stories about the Jedi Service Corp. is a crying shame. As a kid I always thought the idea of washing out of Knight training and having to do work in agriculture, medicine, education, or exploration would suck, but as I've gotten older the idea of force users who are non-combatants sounds pretty rad.
Like imagine a story focused around a Jedi medic who goes around the galaxy treating the sick and the injured but is constantly patronized because they aren't a knight. Or Jedi instructor who was actually once a knight but decided to retire to the Educational Corp because they decided teaching was a better way to help the galaxy than violence.
But sadly the Service Corp never got a lot of love even during the pre-Disney era, and now post-Disney it seems to have been largely forgotten
I think they're sort of doing "Rey in reverse" with Sabine.
Many people complained that Rey was incredibly powerful, but received next to no training (even some folks who liked the character). Sabine isn't particularly powerful at all, and is going to need ALL the training. They both sell the message "anyone can be a Jedi", but Sabine is going to do it in a more believable way, she's gonna have to put some serious effort in.
I think it was a valid criticism. Luke was supposed to be this great Jedi, and we get to travel with him through his failures and eventual mastery of the force. There was no such journey for Rey, she was just better than anyone else because she was. That's bad storytelling, and if Disney doesn't get some competent writers soon, the entire property will collapse.
I would like to see a duel between Sabine and Rey with Sabine beating the snot out of Rey.
Sabine without Jedi training is still a tough warrior to handle in combat. Give her even the basest level of Jedi training and a pitiful amount of force sensitivity and she may never be a good Jedi but one hell of a tough Mandalorian to beat in a fight.
This wouldn't be a reverse. Even with Anakin being labeled as the chosen one he needed all the training, it's not about that, this is just another underwhelming storyline from Starwars to try and forcefully turn a Mandalorian into a Jedi because Disney Starwars is simply running out of ideas and the audience is showing that
Rey wasn’t that powerful lol. She lifted some rocks that’s it. She was strong to do that since at the time the force had her as a balance and counter to kylo ren. It’s actually ok what Disney did, it actually makes sense story wise and has been explained by others already.
The underlying criticism of The Jedi was that they had weakened themselves through their politics, orthodoxy and dogma. The Jedi were defeated because Yoda could not comprehend the Sith threat, until it was too late.

I think both are true, they don't contradict each other really. In fact, the 1st problem was probably a major factor in the 2nd.
With the direction Ahsoka is going, there NEEDS to be a story that follows Yoda's Jedi upbringing. It is being teased that Yoda's teachings make great yet unorthodox Jedi. Why? What was it about Yoda that made it this way? Did Yoda know something that no one else did? Did he comprehend the Prophecy better than anyone could have realized and knew or at least felt what was coming? Was he "Bad" for the Jedi and lead to the Younglings with increased arrogance as described by him in the Clone Wars show? There is too much Pre Skywalker Saga timeline info that we just don't know. The future was clouded by the dark side, so he couldn't....shit. It clicked as I was typing this. Yoda is almost 900 years old at the time of his death. after 800 years, Yoda probably fell into a pattern. He likely is the reason why Jedi like Luke and Ahsoka "Figured it out" but at the same time was likely unable to change the course the Order was heading (coupling with the republic and being the Pinkertons for the Republic). He trained younglings in the true Jedi fashion but when thrust into the universe, they were made to do things that likely made them feel conflicted like it was against their code, all in the name of "Peace" for the Republic. This is why 3 out of 4 of his line did not follow the Orders teachings faithfully and some even turned against it. The one that did(Kenobi), likely only did because his Master was killed before Qui-Gon could guide him on the 3rd part of his journey of being a Jedi Knight on his own (Youngling>Padawan>Jedi Knight/Master Killed>Jedi Master. When he finally became a knight it was because his master found another Apprentice and not because his training reached it's natural conclusion, then Qui-Gon dies and he is forced to take on a Padawan before he can even learn to be himself. I feel like the Knight stage is the key stage that makes a Jedi into what he/she becomes and Obi didn't get a chance to do that so he ended up leaning on the failing council for guidance.)
@@sabrevinver4062 what? Yoda clearly told everyone in the movies that the future is clouded by the dark side of the force. The more time went on, the closer Sidious came to power, the harder it became for the Jedi to see what was coming. Their failing was that they became set in their ways and failed to do what they were meant to do and instead did what they were told by the republic.
I would be 100% happy seeing Sabine have the barest of force talent and being able to use what little connection she has to her benefit. Like it would be great for her to accept and find hapiness in her own abilities and rejecting the desire to self loathe for not being as strong as Ahsoka or Ezra. Would be a much needed lesson for people. Finding strength in yourself in whatever capacity you can, and still doing good for others
That is what i am really hoping happens with sabine in this. The idea of a jedi with zero to none ability in the force is really interesing. Would've probably done it with a new character instead of giving sabine ANOTHER thing she is good at.

@@TheBenjaman that's the thing tho. She's always been a fast learner and that is why she fails to be a jedi. She wants ro accelerate the process but cant due to her lack of force sensitivity. She's a natural warrior and so the hardest thing for her will be accepting her limits and finding peace in them
I feel like she is gonna be like Chirrut Îmwe in that she had a degree of connection but not enough to be a Jedi though still enough to use to benefit and slightly enhance her combat skills.

The HATE Andor got is unreal to me. It was so good, the acting the writing there were parts that literally were sold crushing, just after they got you PUMPED AND JACKED!

I would like to say. I really do love the line Ahsoka said to the droid "I don't need her to be a Jedi, I need her to be her". I do like the slow-rolling of the training as it is a direct contrast to some other Star wars content where this feels more the call back to the Original Trilogy, just this time the Student isn't Luke Skywalker.
Rooting for Sabine to go down the Chirrut Imwe route. Only able to tap into the Force to keep focus and be a good fighter but she wont be throwing cups around anytime soon. Im also glad they are taking the issue head on

The list of force sensitive Mandelorians is very short. The list of Saber using mandelorians is only a bit longer.
Still it would be worth while learning the methods and movements they developed. Unifying those into a distinct form would be a interesting contribution for Sabine.
That could be pretty nifty, kind of a MMA or Krav Maga of the sw universe. (Yeah, I remember they kinda already have that, but not with sabers etc.)
Though I guess you could also count the legends Mando "psychopathy on command" too. Especially if a bes'kad is involved.
Since Mandalorians train as warriors from early childhood, being recruited by Jedi was not encouraged. Most Mandalorians felt their warrior skills were superior to the Jedi, despite that not being true. Mandalorian culture most likely would not have been friendly to the idea that the Jedi snatching their children as toddlers, and wiping away their original identities and cultures, in favor of becoming Jedi. Obi Wan Kenobi was taken from his family as a small child, and had little to no contact with his parents or brother once he was in the Jedi Temple.
@@PlugInRidesas far as combat prowess goes I think the only reason a Jedi would have an advantage is because of their precognitive abilities, otherwise the Mandalorians are definitely the better trained from birth

I always find this channel to offer a deeper, more thoughtful, analysis of the Star Wars universe. From characters to ideology to ship design, Generation Tech continues to provide intriguing content that forces the viewer to consider many more facets of the universe Lucas created. Thanks, Alan, for all the work you do to make this channel interesting.
I think the extra bonus is Sabine's training takes many of us OT kids (I'm 50) back to how we understood the Force, as spoken by Obi Wan, that it is in ALL libing things. From my persepctive, the introduction of the midichlorins (yes, I am aware Lucas had the idea originally in the notes of New Hope, but they were not introduced at that point), it reduced the Force to a Jedi eugenics program, where essentially blood type puts you higher on the chain of power. With Rebels originally and now this show, I think Filoni is trying to get back to the Force as a spiritual element, which with enough belief, anyone can embrace and even use, with training. Almost every discussion by Obi Wan, HuYang, Kanan and now Ahsoka, speaks to mentality being the biggest block, not skill. The introduction of the Benndu was great for this turn on the Force as well, essentially treating it as a balanced toool, instead of a bastion of thing or another. Looking at mentality, if we look at Rey in the sequels (yes, I liked the core stories of them, so bite me) she was an inherent dreamer and was completely open to what she heard of felt the Force could do. THAT is why she took to it so quickly, in my opinion. As a counterpoint, look at Luke in The Last Jedi, which I loved, from the perspective of being a devout religious believer who lost all faith. He intentionally blocked the Force mentally, as we learned Obi Wan did.
I really like your theory on how Rey learned so quickly. I just assumed it was because she was naturally "talented". Yours is better imo.

I think your theory on Rey is really weak, there's no build up or development of the character, all of her abilities just fall out of thin air with no spiritual ethos behind it. Out of nowhere she knows force healing with no time to meditate with the force, out of nowhere she shoots lighting, it is just over the top. You talk about the force as a spiritual element and not once brought up Yoda who was a huge symbol of it, not even once.

It was "more = less training needed to expand your powers"
They were based on mitochondria, which like midoclorians, can create more of themselves through actual training of the body, or in this case training of the force

I think the Sabine story could help showcase just how much Ahsoka views the importance of having a mentor, basically showing just how much Anakin meant to her, that she’s willing to devote herself to this useless Jedi, simply because she knows she needs that guidance
I hope they go down the route of Tyria Sarkin from the Wraith Squadron novels for Sabine... an apprentice who absolutely knows they don't have a huge talent with the Force, but has a innate ability for the nuances of it and the right philosophy of it.
Man, after all the content creators hating on this show (None have watched Clone Wars or Rebels), it's a relief seeing a clear perspective on a show that a ton of us actually love. Quite a few reactions from video creators I watch love this show as I do. None of the negativity can take my appreciation for Ahsoka away, it's just nice to see it explained this way because this is the exact way I feel about the series so far.
If Sabine can move the cup or do the blind fighting exercise by the end of Episode 8, I will consider that a satisfactory resolution to her struggle.

When I'm missing my friends and family (they live across Country), I watch Rebels because it the only Star Wars show/movie that makes me feel warm and cozy. I think a lot of it for me is this is a family and we have been invited into their home.

I like the way they talked about Sabine's ability in Rebels. She has potential, but her Mandalorian upbringing has created a mental block that holds her back from unlocking her potential. When she is provoked and leans into her emotions, the force flows easier for her.
My favorite thing about Sabine is her artistry. I'd love to see a mention of her starbird being taken as the rebel alliance's logo to indicate some bit of how influential she is, especially by someone like Thrawn. Like, everyone she fights as a jedi padawan underestimates her because she's shit at the force and an outcast Mandalorian. Thrawn and Sabine have had a bit of this interaction before, but I think it could be a great metaphor for Thrawn to misunderstand the state of the New Republic.
It feels like Sabine's training might be somewhat of a disability analogy. Ashoka is used to operating on a level that Sabine simply can't achieve, but she can encourage her strengths and recoginse where Sabine knows she can excel and put trust in her abilities in other areas as well as recognise the different support she needs to succeed. The moment when Ashoka had deleted Sabine's presets on the gun turret seemed like a small detail but it showed Ashokas blindness and lack of consideration. Those presets where how Sabine had learned to operate in the world and Ashoka had discarded them. Sabine will likely shine once she puts her armor back on, there is a reason she hasn't so far.
Sabine in Rebels was always a hyper compitent over achiever, being a 16 year old engineering genius/bounty hunter/rebel mandalorian warrior, and started off being approaching mary sue levels when i first watched the show, though my opinion has changed since then. Maybe that was due to Ezra's perspective of her as a somewhat intimidating older peer. But it's clear she is very capable when allowed to do things the way she knows how and to use the tools she has learned with all her life.
I like that "hu yang" is Chinese for "protect and nurture". I also like that Sabine is not Force sensitive but is still learning the ways of the Jedi, and that with enough training, anyone can learn to use the Force. This is the root of Star Wars.
I'm fine with Sabine not becoming a Jedi. Just using her force sensitivity to become a beastly Mandalorian. I think it is interesting to explore force sensitivity from a "non-Jedi" (whether you go by midichlorian count or just general affinity). We saw a bit with the Nightsisters. I always thought Chirrut from Rogue One was force sensitive as well. Frankly, I kind would throw Han into that bucket too of force-sensitives just not enough to be Jedi... "there is no such thing as luck" - Obi-wan.
Referring to an earlier gen tech video (6 levels of midichlorian power) I think Sabine Wren has the same force sensitivity of Han Solo, (5,000-6,000 midi per cell), that is, more than gen pop but less than Padawan level. This is why she was such a badass Mandolarian in Rebels , her preternatural agility particularly her artistry in sabotage, and could use the Darksaber. . . So, as mentioned in the show, Ashoka is not trying to make her a Jedi, but to fulfill her potential, fusing her training as a Mandalorian with her force sensitivity
Don't hold your breath. It's obvious from the cup scene that Sabines force powers will present at some stage. Probably episode 5.

I mean I always assumed that since the force is within every living being, Everyone COULD use some force abilities with enough training and practice just no where near as easily or naturally as force sensitives.

From what we know in-lore, anyone can have some force sensitive abilities with propper training. I don't expect her to start lifting objects, but we'll probably see her make use of some precognition. And I'd be fine with that honestly.

I think Sabine should come to a moment where she has to save someone using the force. But she is unable too. Tensions being high she gets very scared, afraid and angry. With her anger a shift occurs in her understanding that she "is" powerful in the force but from using the dark side instead of the light. She saves her friends using the dark side to feel the force. At this point she becomes an even more interesting character. She is aware of both sides. Yet the dark side is why she was able to save her friends. The dark side is in a way inherit in her. People can lecture her all she wants. But she knows that without the dark side, she would have failed. She sees it differently than others do. This could make her one of the most interesting starwars characters. Someone who used the dark side to save her friends ( parallels with Anakin but slightly different). Maybe after she has trouble with it and maybe she doesn't. I think it would be interesting for her character to accept it on some level instead of shun it. Perhaps she enlightens Ahsoka with an understanding of it. Maybe it helps Ahsoka understand something that was within Anakin. Maybe this leads to a flashback with Hayden Christianson. Maybe Ahsoka sees this as a way to understand the force in a deeper way. Perhaps Ahsoka and Sabine become the truest force wielders because they accept it more as it is as a whole. Helping each other further an understanding. But what the fuck do I know im just a lifelong starwars fan. Not a great writer like Rian johnson. FML. But for real. Not a bad theory no? let me know what you guys/gals think

Honestly when they retcon into being force sensitive I was a bit apprehensive, but I'm really happy with the idea that she's basically force sensitive in name only. It feels refreshing
What's the retcon? Everyone in SW is force sensitive as established by the phantom menace with midichlorians, some people just have higher counts and thus that's where everyone is getting confused with only force users being "force sensitive"
I don't think there is a retcon. They basically state that she has no talent, only a small connection to force, just like everyone else.
@@azazaz4627 there is a bare minimum to be considered force-sensitive otherwise there would be no need for palpatine to look for children in the clone wars or rebels, or for the force-sensitive trooper cloning in the Mandalorian, or the list of force sensitive children in Jedi Fallen Order.
@@miguellopes7627consider it like any other talent in high demand, such as a sporting ability. There is a minimum threshold to be considered a 'talented' football player, a level of skill scouts will be seeking for further training, but not meeting that level doesn't lock someone out completely. I will never, no matter how much effort and training I put in, be a match for Messi, or Steve Smith, or Eli Manning, or , but I could still play those sports, and with enough effort become 'passble'. Maybe.
That's Sabine. She's not force sensitive, by the standards of the Jedi, just as I'm not talented by the standards of... well, anyone if I'm honest. Looking for force sensitives is just talent scouting, really. To make the best you need to start with the talented. But Ahsoka isn't trying to make the best Jedi, she's trying to make the best Sabine.

I legitimately hate the idea of Sabine being force sensitive. I feel like it just makes her "another Jedi". The idea of a non-force sensitive mandalorian lightsaber weilder is quite unique. Yes, din and bo have done that, but it's not their identity. Din sucks at wielding the darksaber, bo sees it simply as a symbol, and the darksaber is gone in general.
the darksaber isnt gone, it's ownership is up for debate though.

I just hope Sabine remembers she's actually a Mandalorian as well for the next fight and doesn't charge an enemy with nothing but a weapon she is woefully inexperienced with. I think that was kind of the point of her training sessions with Kanan, and this training in Ahsoka feels to me like a repetition of that arc.

Saying she's woefully inexperienced with lightsabers is kinda silly when she legitimately won the darksaber by defeating the person wielding it, while using the very same lightsaber she currently has.
She will never be able to match a proper jedi since she lack the prerogative reflexes but she should be much more competent then this show is portraying her to be.
fighting a force wielder is a whole different animal than a fellow Mandalorian without force powers.

Fantastic insight. Being a Jedi is about the Jedi philosophy, about being a good person.
One of many reasons the first season of Mandalorian was so enjoyable was that Din kept getting his ass kicked. Even in season 2 his ship kept getting wrecked then destroyed. Heroes on the back foot are more satisfying when they pull through.

I can’t agree with what you said more. I was just taking out today, watching all of the breakdowns… I think this series has been great and will be great and it’s everything that we needed. People need to stop forcing people to have their opinion have your own watch it yourself!
I've come to the conclusion that all of those channels are bound and determined to hate modern Star Wars no matter what. I swear some of them post these "reviews" without even watching an episode, or if they do watch, they're only watching for things to complain about. All they want to do is dump on the show without giving it a fair shake. I've been enjoying Ahsoka so far and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story pans out.

When its more entertaining to watch a SW review than this Disney trash……..nobody but Disney is forcing anything really besides forcing me not to get Disney plus
...but i *am* watching it myself and my judgement *so far* is that we haven't learned jack nor shit that we didn't know from the show's announcement or trailers. "Glacial" comes to mind, taking the single-word aspect of Andor and making it worse by only having 8 episodes. 'tis not my only problem with the show but it's deffinitely the biggest one preventing me from having any enjoyment from it.
I've been thinking about this and having a padawan with no or little force sensitivity might be a good thing. The Jedi became too reliant on the force and didn't notice how the state of the old republic had constrained them from doing better. Having someone who came from a different background like Sabine might bring perspective or approach that might work better than what Ahsoka is used too. Finally if Sabine manages to win against a stronger Force user despite being significantly weaker in the Force, she wouldn't be the first. If I remember in legends Meetra Surik managed to beat 1 powerful Sith by being disconnected from the force. Also I would like to see Sabine be something like an improved Tarre Vizsla. I guess in short making everything about the force is a mistake because the force can become a boon and a crutch at the same time.
And personally I feel like it becomes a bit of a callback to the vibe of the Original Trilogy, where midichlorians weren't introduced yet as sole arbiters of potential, and the impression people got was that anybody determined could eventually achieve some level of ability. We obviously can't abandon the Prequel lore, but if Sabine eventually attains very basic force skills through training, like for example being able to complete the blind fighting exercise halfway decently, it'll neatly reemphasize that while talent a lot, so does dedication and training. Or at least, that's how I'll interpret it. At this point I wouldn't want her to fail entirely, but I also hope they don't go too far, with Sabine instead leveraging her other skills to become overall well rounded.
Kind of like some of what Kreia, seeing how both Jedi and sith have grown to depend on it.

IMO the Jedi lost their way at the point of the schism where the study of the dark side was banned and its followers were kicked out to become the Sith because at that point (or shortly before) they lost the ability to attain balance in the force. Standing fully on one side or another of anything means that you will be upsetting the balance of said thing and as time went on the Jedi seem to have become forever more dogmatic and officious with those like Qui-Gon Jinn who decide to follow the will of the force becoming a rarity rather than the mainstay of the order. I am hopeful that within this series of Ashoka the main character and her apprentice, Sabine in their quest to find her link to the force can find the balance between light and dark that the Jedi lost in order to become more than what that lost order was.

To quote Han Solo, that's not how the Force work. The Dark side isn't and never was some other side which you can compromise and find a balance. The dark side is sheer corruption.

At the very least Sabine should only learn the 6th sense the force helps with. Using the force to sense danger and an enemies planned attack is the best thing I think for Sabine to learn to match her combat skills she possesses already. She doesn't need to move objects with the force.

Sabine IS perfect at everything. How many people do you know who were a master pilot/mechanic/engineer/marksman/martial artist all before they turned 30? The Force is the first thing she wasn't immediately perfect at.

Honestly this is the sad truth. Some of us remember Legends and want it all to be like that and deny there were any flaws there, some us would like to discus the potential of the sequel trilogy rather than what they did wrong and some us are just here for the pew pew and woom woom. We're truly a more divided fandom than when Knights of the Old Republic and other expansion materials were being printed!

From the promotional material it looks like we will see another duel between Shinn and Sabine, and we see from that scene that Sabine attempts to use force powers. Now if we take the unimaginative rote memorization just repeat what has been said at us then Sabine should use the force and win, but is that really the best option. If the force resides in all living beings created by them surrounds them for luminous beings they are not crude matter, then it should matter Sabine wouldn't need to use the fancy trick that so many assume is all a Jedi is.

Honestly I think both the sith and jedi order are too in traped by their own history to the point they can always be enslaved by the sins and traditions of the dead,( mace windu) never once can they nake their own legacy unlike lusk or Ashoka.

I love your more philosophical take on the fandom as a whole, the anger that floods comments sections, the canon gatekeepers who grow enraged become some character didn't do something precisely like a character in past episodes. Just look at how many HATE that Ahsoka acts "stoic" and hope we get to see the spunky child they feel she should still be. As if years of warfare, losing everyone you love, being a refugee, and becoming a master in her own right won't change her. It's like, how dare a woman has (gasp) CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!
For me, I'm old enough to remember my brother being upset that Luke was suddenly calm and stoic when "Return of the Jedi" was in the theater. He insisted that couldn't be Luke. It was some new character. Even as it became clear, this was Luke Skywalker, he was upset that they "changed him." He had seen the original in the theater (I wasn't born yet) so he imprinted on whiny, teenage Luke wanting to hang out with friends at Tosche Station or growing frustrated at his teacher. In that way, Luke was a lot like him. He didn't like this new "adult" Luke.
I have to wonder if that's the case now. People who grew up with Clone Wars still have that rosy childhood memory, and change scares them, making them angry. They don't like seeing "their" Ahsoka as an adult, so they declare they HATE the show, they HATE Filoni. So much hate! All to cover up some hidden fear, because this isn't the spunky child they came to love.
Although, considering it has thus far been only MEN to complain about Ahsoka's mature calmness, I have to wonder if there's a lot more than just nostalgia involved with wanting to infantilize her. After all, there's a sad pattern for how men in the Star Wars fandom treat female characters who aren't bikini-clad fanfic fodder.
I hope you're right. But at the moment all I can see is a character who was already a proven warrior in her own right being made to look ridiculous. I hope I'm proven wrong in the end but at the moment I'm sceptical.

I honestly think that Sabine won’t be lifting things or performing superhuman feats. I think at most she might become like Chirrut, developing an affinity for the Force that enhances her martial skills and physical abilities (reaction time, senses, etc) through faith and spiritual discipline.
In fact…I think the Jedi including non-Force Sensitives would be a great thing. It stops the Force from being this thing that is gatekeepers by genetics and lets it become this thing anyone can study and aspire to understand. Yeah, they wouldn’t be as effective as someone who can crush a droid with a thought and a gesture, but it could allow for a form of Jedi who are more humble and also expand the Order’s ranks with more warriors, diplomats, etc.
In the Clone Wars we saw Mandalorian warriors deflect rapid blaster bolts with their battle staffs, and in Jedi Survivor there were Bedlam Raiders who could deflect blaster boots with lightsabers gifted to them by Gera. In short…I think it actually would be an invaluable idea for the new Jedi Order to expand to be mostly made up of people who can’t outwardly wield the Force but can still be trained to use it to still be formidable both in and outside of a fight.

During the second episode when Sabine was about to be ambushed after she had taken the map from Ahsoka, I honestly felt that Sabine should be/would be defeated by the dark apprentice (forget her name at this moment) so I was more satisfied with how the show was going to portray Sabine's abilities rather than, as pointed out, suddenly being all lightsaber powerful. Fighting an untrained Mandalorian with the Dark Saber is one thing, fighting a Sith-trained assassin is another.
