One thing I notice about his early reviews is that he's largely reviewing games he actually grew up with. He's a lot more relaxed and basically saying "look at how shitty this is, this was a significant portion of my childhood." Nowadays he has to focus on games he knows nothing about, or barely played growing up. It doesn't mean his later episodes suck, but their tone is definitely "James Rolfe playing as the Nerd" and much less "James Rolfe exaggerating his disappointment with a game he played as a kid." His Ghostbusters episodes are a particularly good example of the latter.
The latest episode (Paperboy) is a good example of the earlier style in my opinion. He's saying "I played this game as a kid but it was really frustrating and pissed me off!" Sometimes you can feel James talking himself, not just the Nerd.
For me it's the delivery. He's much more passive-aggressive and cynical in these early reviews, which made his anger seem genuine. Now the Nerd is more like a cartoon character.
Yeah my parents weren't too happy that day shit flew out my ass and I rocketed through the roof. "I just cleaned this floor! -- I JUST RESHINGLED THAT ROOF!"
Still just love that ending. Such poor spelling and execution that even the Nerd can only laugh at the insanity of it all. Much more effective than any cuss-storm would have been in my opinion.
Sadly I'd rather play this than 90% of mobile games. At least this doesn't ask for your credit card every 5 seconds. And the tedious grind for money in this game has become the norm for mobile games now.

I would like to give some clarity to this shitty game to help you guys understand why it's so shitty: So why do you have to drive to the building? Apparently how much you move around the map determines how much you have to drive to the building. So the more time you waste moving in the map means more miles on the driving sequence. But sadly, to figure out which buildings have ghosts in them, you have to be right by them, so you have no choice but to move around like a dumbass in a maze. James is right, if the PKE Meter goes high enough (9,999), it's an instant game over. So you have to stop the ghosts going toward the center building by touching them. Of course, this means you'll have to do more driving when you reach the building you want. Believe it or not, it's not random as to when you can get in the Zuul building; you have to *pay* to get in. $15,000 to be exact. But of course, you need those extra items too, so you'll have to save a lot more for the anti-ghost suit for two more hits and the sound generator to slow the ghosts down in the building stage. Oh and why is it 22 floors? Because that's the floor they reach in the movie while climbing the stairs. Yes, really. Of all the things to follow in the movie, why did it had to be that? Hope that cleared things up.
I remember when Avgn started I was always looking forward to when he’d eventually get around to this game. I spent countless hours on it and never got to the end until years later when I got game genie.

I can honestly say I was a huge Ghostbusters fan as a kid. I saw a friend playing this game and stayed away from it...lol. Thanks for sharing this bro.
I wonder if the ghost vacuum from the "100 Lives of Black Jack Savage" was inspired from this game. It had a similar power supply as the proton packs (but couldn't be carried), I remember at the time thinking it was just a cheesier, thrown-together version of the Ghost Buster's proton packs. I was just a kid, but I kind of liked that show, and Logan "FX" Murphy's crazy gadgets.
I actually just played through this game the other day. It's actually not THAT terrible and it's really short. I found out if you just stick to the right hand side of the road and just drive as fast as you can, you almost never hit a road block.
@@GrooveScorpion 1: Listen to the man's voice. That has to be Kyle. 2: I highly doubt James Rolfe actually called a store just to ask about a ghost vacuum.
The store makes sense in the context of the game, at least if it's the same as the Commodore 64 version. You're not playing as the actual Ghostbusters, you're opening up a new franchise.

Has anyone else noticed that there is no actual "S" sound at the end when the start button is pushed on the title screen? "Ghostbuster!"
