    1. FORGIVE ME FOR CALLING THIS WOMAN MARBLE WHEN HER NAME IS MABLE
    2. in the book Covey flees the island in 1965 and it is 2018 in the present day. The ages in the book make sense for what was going on in the show because its obviously 2023 in the show but she still ran in 1965….idk
    3. What are yall's thoughts on the book and/or the show

      She was Mable in the show.
      In the book it was Mable and she changed it to Marble. I did the audiobook and it sounded like Marvel!

    Covey in the book, mentions that she knew Bunny was in love with her. The book present day was set as 2018. I think the way the book goes back and forth it’s easy to forget things!

    I'm obsessed with the show but I need answers!!!!!! I truly hope they do a season 2. I feel I'm too deep into the show to read the book at this point. I would also love the recipe for Black Cake.

    Black cake is kinda a colloquial term for Caribbean rum and fruit cake. Yeah the fruit is usually soaked in rum or sherry mix and then added into the batter with spices and browning (kinda like a sister of molasses used commonly in Caribbean cooking) which gives it a brown “black” loook once cooked used alot in celebration particularly around Christmas time. I think the show goes more into the cake it self and how it came to be a staple in Caribbean cuisine.

    I just finished watching the show and you answered a lot of my questions regarding Covey’s parents. Thanks.
    I think it could have gone an extra 2-4 episodes. If there is a season 2 it should have a very nice ending to all story lines.

      Glad I could help! A few more episodes would have been perfect.

    I think Byron and Benny were so self-absorbed and entangled in their own little "kept" worlds that they believed were near-close to perfect that they wouldn't have the capacity to think it was their mother's story. Why would this cute, little endearing typical-of-mom- afterthought be anything other than her whimsical way of saying goodbye? Their mom was symbolic of perfection to them. I totally get why it took them a while. Gone press that extra 5th star. :)

    I had to push through the book. I had to skip some paragraphs because reading was exhausting.
    Percivel (Little Man's cousin/brother) was an unnecessary read.
    Didn't thrill me to read about Mabels life, only that she existed.
    The recordings of Elanor/Covey was long winded... included too words, thought the recordings took long to make a point.
    Some parts of book could have included humor or sex scenes.. just to lighten the mood. The book had rape, murder, accidents, violence , spolier alert... poison 😢 just felt like one tradgedy to the next. 😢
    Maybe my brain couldnt keep up with switching from the past to present and the in-between. These were a tad hard to keep up. I would rate the book at 6/10.
    Still, I learned a lot about the Chinese-Jamaican people so this was very interesting and the foods/fruits of Jamaica. Hoping to make some black cake now!

    Im mad that the dads life was roses & butterflies while Covey was half dead, getting r-word, & giving up her child!

    It's Byron's girlfriend's nephew, not her son, who got pulled over. She doesn't have a child...yet.

    IMO, the series is better than the book. It is a great story and could’ve been a great book, but I wasn’t a fan of the style of writing. I love a good time leap book told from different perspectives, but this one had too many and too many unnecessary side stories. I know that authors do this to try to add depth to the characters but because of the way she wrote it, I felt nothing. I was much more connected to the characters in the series but I had to will myself to finish the book. And I’m still trying to understand the last chapter about Mabel when she’s talking about her son and the neighbor's son and the dog.

    • @CirrenaMarie
      @CirrenaMarie  9 месяцев назад

      I interpreted the last chapter as her realizing how much she missed her son but it's been a minute since i finished it so i could be off but it did feel a little random.

    • @hadiahbulgin7101
      @hadiahbulgin7101 7 месяцев назад

      I interpreted Mabel's feelings as she knows the new people are not her family at heart. Her son Gio, the dog, and Wanda are her truist family.

    Black people arent originally from the Caribbean islands either, so we should be able to enjoy our traditional recipes without judgement, thank you very much as it is a testament to our creativity and resilience.

    Huh? I don’t really understand your point on the unrealistic conversations with Byron I thought the way his character was being portrayed as a heavily suppressed 1st generation American and with his parents experiencing racism in the UK and Scotland which is why Byron sticking up for himself and his sister resonate because of the heavy suppression

    I am happy for people getting their bag and that is what this series and so many others do. They add another season. This should have been a limited series. I read the book, it was worthy of reading. But not dragging it out like this. The same thing they are doing with"Kindred". I gave it a 4 out 5.

    The math is mathing to me. My dad was born in '75 and he's 48. And Black people look GOOD as we age. It makes sense to me.

      The Etta Pringle chapter where Byron and Etta debate on stage said it was 2019.

    The whole race thing from immigrants make sense. Byron was born and raised in America and Covey and Gibbs had been in the US a long time before their kids were born. Several of my friends, even now, say their parents have these conversations with them.

    • @CirrenaMarie
      @CirrenaMarie  8 месяцев назад

      I think now the conversation makes sense as a lot more people are having it. I don't think the show really provided context for how long after the parents left London the children were born so if felt confusing for me.
