    Receiving a postcard in your letterbox is still one of the little joys of life. I still write a number of them when I travel. The digital age might have taken over but a postcard has a special quality to it: the effort someone made to send it to you. That family member or friend went to the trouble of buying the card, writing on it, getting a stamp for it and looking for a postbox. I often see people writing them when I travel, so this wonderful gesture to others is far from dead. ❤😊

    great video! i would’ve preferred a mini series as well. the book did such a good job at making me love the characters and the movie felt a little rushed in comparison. i saw there’s a sequel to the book, i’m going to check it out! have you covered disappearing acts by terry mcmillan? i’ve already seen the movie a bunch of times but i just started reading the book.

    Great video! I loved the book, but then I watched the show, and I felt what you said: people in the show are much more likable than in the book. I also like that they added the black issues and changed the Slone family completely. And the religious issues were handled more smoothly. They removed all the critics Elizabeth had for saying she was an atheist, including the crazy woman with the bomb. They also removed all the story of the Time’s interview.

    Pretentious pseudo-intellectualism is my knee jerk response to this movie. Which is a shame because it's beautifully shot and well acted. It's grappling with profound ideas but making no insightful commentary about it. It's belligerently salacious under the guise of a distorted view of girl-boss, post modern feminism.

    Rebecca Hall didn't "discover" that she had black ancestry. Her mother, Maria Ewing, was a famous opera singer thought of and proud of being black (rather than passing as white) though with mixed ancestry. The actual discovery was about Rebecca's grandfather (Maria's father), who was also of mixed ancestry. He claimed to be a Native American on one census and black in another. This claiming to be different things at different times and in a context in which racial hierarchies were legally enforced were what interested her in Passing.

    Here's why I feel Queenie got little love. I never read the book. The cultural divide and perhaps the fact most of is been there and done it. As far as what she endured as a child with her mom needed to be addressed more. I'm Caribbean American and i love watching shows about that segment of people is great to me though i identify African American too

    Black cake is kinda a colloquial term for Caribbean rum and fruit cake. Yeah the fruit is usually soaked in rum or sherry mix and then added into the batter with spices and browning (kinda like a sister of molasses used commonly in Caribbean cooking) which gives it a brown “black” loook once cooked used alot in celebration particularly around Christmas time. I think the show goes more into the cake it self and how it came to be a staple in Caribbean cuisine.

    I disagree entirely. I loved this Netflix series! It was such a journey, a rollercoaster of emotions! I cried my eyes out so much my face was stinging. I have not been moved this way by any movie or series in several years! The chemistry between main characters is electric! I loved the format and how the story was told. I appreciate that the viewer isn’t spoon-fed but we get to uncover and fill in the blanks ourselves.

    Disclaimer: This is satire because I keep hearing so many people say the book was better than the movie. “The movie was so bad, the book was SOOOO much better!” Me: 👁️👄👁️ In what way? That book is still not very good. “Name one thing that wasn’t good in the book.” Me: I’ll give you a few. One, Lily and Atlas’ relationship in the book when Lily was in high school and Atlas was an adult when they met. She lost her virginity when she was SIXTEEN and he was eighteen. Two, that cow manure scene(Do I really need to explain this). Three, the diary entries to Ellen Degeneres(Of all things, that made no sense). Four, the book has no idea what it’s supposed to be unless people tell them. Five, the end of the book where Lily’s abuser was allowed to see his daughter unsupervised. Six, the fanfic writing style. These are all I know on the top of my head since I’ve never read the books and only know and aware are from book review videos. But if you’d like to add something then feel free to. Edit: I’d like to make an apology for getting the ages wrong for Atlas on here. As I said before I’ve never read the book nor do I intend to.

    I truly believe that the author has never been in an abusive relationship based on the book and movie. Not a great or realistic depiction of abuse

    • @erinlee5936
      @erinlee5936 3 месяца назад

      You're right. The abusive relationship in the book was inspired by her parents' relationship. It was her experience but as a child who witnessed her parents' toxic relationship. Her relationship was probably different ... but also maybe questionable? Depends on who you ask, with regard to her son being accused of SA and her ignoring the allegations.

    • @arkkon2740
      @arkkon2740 3 месяца назад

      @@erinlee5936 you also need to consider the fact that despite this book being a message, her "entertainment" books are written basically the same way I just doubt the parents story in general because of it. It requires a level of dissonance that you create a book thats meant to reflect the abusive relationship between your parents, while ALSO having all of your romance books being the same way. It makes it look like you idolize this relationship and you're just lying to people when saying this is abusive and abhorant to you

    • @Louves192
      @Louves192 3 месяца назад

      @@erinlee5936 Also according to CoHo herself she had a very good relationship with her abusive father and even thanked him in the author's note. She also calls his abuse of her mother (which was horrific and worse than whats in the book btw) mistakes in the past that do not define him as a person. Her perception is completely twisted.

  • @meli-belli

    I actually really liked how the domestic violence was shown at the beginning vs end of the film. People often gloss over DV and minimize the seriousness of it, hence why so many victims stay in abusive relationships. As someone who didn't read the book before seeing the movie, I wasn't looking for all the red flags. So I, like Lily, viewed the first two scenes with rose colored glasses until they were revealed to be worse later down the line. I could totally see how she would make excuses to stay when viewing the instances as "accidents." It adds so much more complexity and realism to these relationships because these situations are usually not super obvious in the beginning

    i feel like Queenie's character should have stayed single at the end of the tv series. she spent months obsessing over Tom then participating in hook up culture, and when she finally goes to therapy, she's only been truly single for a couple of months and gets into another relationship. This is a really fun summary! I LOVED the book and also disliked the film. I love "found manuscript" stories and also love grand historical tragedies so it was very much up my alley. I listened to the audiobook, which I would recommend if you are worried about the political asides boring you lol, it gives the entire book a nice verve. I think you are right that is a serious shame that the movie forgoes the ambiguities of the book. The multiple frame narratives call into question the assumptions of the male writers and editors framing Bella's story. The point you made about a full grown woman with a child's mind being the "ideal" male fantasy... it seems to me that the book interrogates this idea. Bella only gets one real chance to tell her story on her own terms, and that too is full of holes and questions. Within the world of the novel there was a person named Bella Baxter, and though she was in many ways a significant, privileged, and important person who left plenty behind, we are still so far away from understanding and apprehending her as a human being. It's an ambitious and complex novel about the many ways women get controlled and diminished beyond their individual life spans and in the very genre forms we use to describe them. IRONIC then that the film erases the book's location of Glasgow and turns Bella into a mere girlboss icon and childlike woman (ugh), instead of the wonderfully strange and complex woman in the book that is forever, perhaps for the better, out of our reach.
