Great show. Easy binge. I want more. ...didn't like the white boyfriend, but I understand why he's there. I just wish it was more of a running gag, I mean, someone should have said something about him out loud. I want more.
@@getnkosi it did come up more in the book. They would make jokes about it a little with Malaika and she questioned how having a white boyfriend made her look. I agree they should have brought more of that into the show
I honestly loved the book, and I know a lot of people don't. I will say I listened to the book as an audiobook and that's what I think led me to love it. I was super shocked and a bit frustrated with the ending of the book. But I will say that I enjoy when books don't always take the route we desire. But all of the uneasiness I felt from the ending of the book was eliminated with the ending of the show. I think they did a great job with the show!
I completely agree. I appreciate when authors don't give the ending that people might expect but this one felt a little personal and i wanted her to do the opposite lol
@@TheBellePerspectiveTVbut how does Candice do it without the hair grease? The hair grease pushes down frustration with injustice, but isn't that just empathy? Candice Owens is a bit of a sociopath, right? The way she invalidates others' experiences and props up conspiracy theories to garner attention seems very unempathic
Hi! Managing the pain and frustration of injustice is not empathy to. It's actually the opposite. For someone to have empathy it requires them to feel things (the injustice/violence/hurt) others have/are feeling. If you have no empathy, it is easier to invalidate the experiences of others. Candice Owens, easily ignores the hurt people that look like her experience and uses what she knows as a way to succeed. @@FiercelyGold
I didn't read the book, I just watched the show. It seemed to me that in the show there was something in that hair grease that was either mind controlling or brainwashing. Another thing that made me think that was in one of the talk show flashbacks when Diana said that her grandmother was from Louisiana. I'm from Louisiana, born and raised. I'm not saying that voodoo is big here like Hollywood constantly makes it seems, but Louisiana is most known for voodoo more than any other state in America. It's very common that when a movie or TV show has anything dealing with voodoo it's always tied to Louisiana. So the fact that Diana mentioned that her grandmother was from here, I instantly thought ((maybe)) the hair grease is actually some kind of voodoo potion that Diana got from her grandmother.
I didn't even catch the Louisiana bit, in the book Diana is working with a scientist(i can't remember all of the details) but they were working hard to perfect the recipe and prevent the "original" Black women from losing their jobs. It's absolutely mind control grease.
@@CirrenaMarie well now I'm really interested to see if they stick to the book on that if there's another season. Because when Diana said that her grandmother was from here I really thought that the show might go the in the voodoo direction with the hair grease. All because it isn't common that Louisiana is brought up in tv shows and movies. Whenever it is it's usually because it has something to do with bayou swamps, Mardi Gras or voodoo.
Firstly, I love your twist very cute! Secondly, thanks for shining a light on the book I was upset at first that I didn’t read the novel, but that’s only because the show was so good. That is quite disappointing that the book didn’t come to par also the ending of the book is quite sad to because why give up? Overall, I am happy I seen the show first the thriller wasn’t as thrilled as the trailer but still did justice 😊!
I loved the show. I hadn’t heard of it before listening to the leads on Brian Baumgartner’s podcast. Truthfully I thought it was going to be a comedy and was surprised when I looked it up and it was a ‘thriller’. Couldn’t stop watching. Loved the cast and the writing. I’m hoping it gets a season 2.
I just binged watched this. I may need to read the book for deeper insight. Overall, the series was pretty ok. It was edgy enough to hold my attention. The light humor from the best friend was just enough.
I haven't read the book LOL.. because I would see it in bookstores, but it just rubbed me the wrong way with a potential plot about two Black girls being against one another. I love that you did your best not to spoil the show. I'm glad to hear it was a different ending than the book.
I watched the show in one sitting over the weekend. Loved it. I found your review, thanks you. Something about the author would have been nice. I would never read the book but your thoughts did add a bit more ❤context
I started reading the book, but never got around to finishing after three chapters because I seem to no longer have enough attention span to read. (Don't ask why because I don't know.) I liked what I read, but agree it needed more tension. More reason to keep reading. I finished the show last night and I really liked it. The magic hair grease was a bit "Really? Really???" but like you said, the series makes the story more of a satirical thriller than a serious thriller.
Oh boy, did i enjoy the show! I didn’t read the book, and I was confused at first. But it was just suspenseful enough to keep me clicking to the next episode. I'm glad i didn't have to wait week after week because they would have lost me. Honestly, i dont think the 'sister-girl' group was so bad, i honestly think i would use the hair grease. The last episode tied everything up beautifully. I was always team Vera, i loved her since Scandal. Will was funny, and i enjoyed all his scenes, but i dont buy him as the ringleader. Anyway, im telling all my social media to check out this show. Sucks that the book wasn't so good. The show was very enjoyable, and a very easy binge.
Will be interesting to hear your views reading the book after watching the show. I did it the other way around when the book first came out. I found it to be a big let-down and the ending even more so. Was excited when I heard about the show and honestly like the the screen adaptation more.
I'm always late when it comes to reading books and watching television shows. Majority of my favorite television shows like kindred gets canceled after one season. I hope that this is not the case with this show.
I asked my friend APHIA ASHA who just reade the book last week to give me her opinion of the book , it feels like she listened to this review first 😅 but she did not . Great review 👏🏾 👌🏿
I didn’t read the book, but I binge watched the show last night and I really enjoyed it! Some of the “wokeness” was over the top at times for me and felt a little too on the nose, but overall I’d recommend this series to others. I enjoyed your reviews of both the book and show!
I read the book and I tried to love it…but I didn’t 😔 I did enjoy the series and I agree it was fun when they introduced the characters and I could relate them to the book. Love your review !
It’s giving “black women love hair grease”. the show makes it seem less creative while the book spends more time trying to get Nella to use the grease without her knowing what it is. Also the first the Nella notices about Hazel, in the book, is the smell of her hair. Since moisturizing our hair is important I guess it makes since but it also felt very silly.
What did y'all think of the book and/or show?
