- Here's the second half of the Vlog I did a few weeks back for the Amica Life Insurance commercials I voice. I do a decent amount of editing in this to keep the time down and try to give you informative stuff throughout! SUBSCRIBE, WATCH, LIKE, THANKS!
For someone such as myself who has interest in being a voice director, getting to hear some of the pointers Paul gave you really helped me get a good idea of the kind of things a good director can do to help an actor find the voice that is needed. Very good video, and you are very amazing at your job. :)
Interesting video. It's fascinating to see how the process actually goes.
Thanks for the upload while I'm stuck inside due to hurricane Hermine! Hope you're having a great day!
I am glad you included how many takes it took. I can imagine for people just starting out that they might feel discouraged or feel that they aren't quite performing as they should be after 20+ takes. It is good to see it in a real situation.
Through your videos, I've learnt that there is so much more to voice acting than just doing the voice-overs. You need to be a good business person, sell your voice and communicate in a certain way when a session comes up.
That's why I love your "Day in the Life of a Voice-Actor" videos, you give us the real deal!
Wow! Thank you very much for that. I really enjoyed feeling as if I was the fly on the wall. lol
Awesome work as always JAT! Always humble and encouraging too. Love it!
I have always loved Obi-Wan Kenobi, but recently I discovered this channel. Voice acting seems so very cool; I may not ever want to be a voice actor, but I enjoy watching you work and seeing all the behind the scenes effort that you have to put in. Thanks for these updates:)
Fantastic and very informative. Thank you JAT!
I love your little insights into these things James! Forever helping me on my way to become a voice actor
These are so fascinating. If people say voice acting is easy....this shows how much variance you need to have. Great video sir!
Wow. This is incredible. So many takes!!!
Love your Vlog James!! Been checking out the episodes. Thanks!
This was incredibly informative, thanks JAT
Fascinating as ever. Thank you
Thanks James, you are a true inspiration!
i absolutely love these videos James! what insight and brilliance. I appreciate you. Id love to learn with you one on one. You are an incredible teacher and I imagine that getting your direct feedback on copy would be priceless. Thank you for your gift.
God if I ever wanted to pursue acting, i would NEED to practice my patience. It felt like you got it by the third take
Love your vlogs! Keep it up! Hope the crowd will grow.
I really enjoyed this, it was very interesting! Thank you James! ^o^
This is great. Thanks James!
Hello, good sir! Thank you for this channel. I watched parts 1 and 2. Fascinating stuff! I'm 43 and am starting this new career with gusto; even more than being a musician! I already have a few voice over reads done (for free, of course...have to build the resume) and have a couple of mentors, too. Watching your videos has given me a boost. Great content! Keep it up!
Thanks! Hope you've subscribed to the channel and taken a look at some of the other videos in the archives lots of material to take in. And lots more to come! Good luck to you in your endeavors!
You are truly an amazing person and thanks for the vlogs and posting what happens in your career. I have watched all your videos and I'm showing how amazing your talent is to my friends and people who have talent with creating and making close impressions of characters. Keep this up. I can only do gollum/smeagol from lord of the rings very well.
I loved the edits you used at 0:55-1:00. Not sure if that was intentional, but it gave me a good chuckle.
Good eye!! ; )
Love your uploads!
great!!!!!!! thanx J!

Thay was great!!
No Clone Wars comments? But Master Kenobi, that's no fun.
Amica is Finnish lunch restaurant. Felt a bit weird listen about their insurance plans ;D

hey James I was wondering if you could make a video on how to keep your recording quality as good as it can be, as I'm sure many of us would really appreciate the advice
Keep it simple and find as quiet a place as you can to record that does sound "Echoey" use as high a quality equipment as you can too. ; )
How does the delayed playback not screw you up though? I'm not sure if you've answered that question somewhere before, but that baffles me. I thought it would screw up speech.
Also wanted to say, I love what you're doing, and thank you so much for giving up some of your time as a resource for rookie VA's like myself. It is much appreciated, and it's of great use to me. :)
dude im coming to comic con today to meet you!
How can you possibly intake all the directions they are giving you? There's so many thing to have to remember, as well as having to read it flawlessly.
Practice man, practice. : )
Hello James, after a session like this how long of a rest will you give yourself before jumping into another session?
Was that 38 takes? Is that a normal amount?
Remember there were 3 different commercials recorded so it was 38 takes total for 3 spots, that is indeed pretty normal they like to cover their bases and get various options.
This is Paul, the guy on the other end in the video. If some perspective helps on the number of takes: We were editing James' VO with some other performances that were recorded separately. Without being 100% sure of how much time we would need for the other parts, we asked for some faster takes "just in case" and might have even given him some words to cut from the script for timing reasons. Apart from that, we try to push the performance in a few directions to see what feels best: More casual and friendly? More wise and authoritative? How much urgency can we add without getting too pushy? James is so good at those nuances that it's tempting to see what else he can do with the material. So a lot of takes can mean that we're getting more great options to choose from. The tendency is to do a lot of takes on the first script to nail down the tone, and then fewer on the following scripts.
Ah that makes sense. As someone considering getting into VO, this is all very interesting! Thank you!
Thanks Paul!
No clone wars comments.
How about you starting clone wars converstaions just to screw with us.
