I can tell you the main reason why JCB has proved so successful in the long term - and I'm astonished this commentary failed to mention it. *EVERY share in JCB is owned by a member of the Bamford family.*
If, therefore, they decide to invest a massive proportion of their net income in R & D, there are no external shareholders to demand that they use that money to pay out higher dividends on shares. This policy, which Joe Bamford adopted from the start, also makes them fireproof against the sort of hostile take-over suffered by Ferguson's, when other directors virtually sold the company out to the American company Massey behind Harry Ferguson's back. Inevitable result? A few years later, Massey closed the English side down and fired all the staff.
A couple of other points which should ALSO have been made clear; JCB is now the second biggest company in the world for plant and machinery for agriculture, construction and materials handling - and the *BIGGEST in the world for back-hoe loaders!*

As a young teen I still remember my first time in a loadall it was on loan from jcb as it was at the time unavailable and not even for sale, and my stepdad used it with a spike to move hay bales and straw around the farm with us in the cab.
He loved it, they pre ordered one . He also had one of the first fastracs on the farm.
Nice to see a British brand excel and innovate. It's what made this country great after all. 👍🏻❤️

Bamford founded JCB in Rocester but today the company is the main reason why the local town, Uttoxeter, fairs better than many other rural towns in the UK. The company employs most of the town, I know this because I've lived there for 26 years. JCB looks after their employees as well; getting a job there guarantees a stable income for the rest of your life, the company is unionised and employees get generous benefits.

Success through proper engineering and no interfering/asset stripping City shareholders, albeit some aggressive competitive policies. I worked for two of their competitors and came across a number of ex-JCB employees who were almost burnt out nervous wrecks, whilst JCB's subcontractors often went under due to price pressure - the construction equipment industry is very much feast or famine. JCB badge engineered Korean agricultural tractors smaller than the Fastrac range - never understood why they didn't come to the UK to broaden the range of offerings.

This video conveniently fails to mention that JCB was fined no less than € 39.6 million in 2000 for attempting - with other companies - to fix the European market in earthmoving equipment.
    QUOTE
The European Commission has adopted a decision finding that JC Bamford Group (JCB) of Britain, a leading manufacturer of construction, farm and industrial handling equipment, has violated European Union antitrust law. Since the late 80s, JCB has put in place distribution agreements and other practices which have the effect of severely restricting out of territory sales of JCB's products both within certain national territories and across national borders, as well as interfering with the freedom to set resale prices. For these very serious violations of article 81 of the EC treaty JCB was fined a total 39.6 million euros.
    UNQUOTE
Despite the EU having been one of its largest markets, this is why Bamford was a huge financial supporter of the lies put out as to why Britain should leave the EU.

Many times F1 sponsorships results in wining and dining by a sponsor to big clients at races. How many units of anything "JCB" do they sell to one end user? You aren't going to do that to sell one telescopic wheeloader to a farmer in Iowa. I'm a retired desk jockey in the US. I see JCBs around, but it's always one here, one over there, another one.... Thank you for making contact with us via JCB.com
I have made enquiries regarding the history you were looking for, and I can confirm that Bamfords were a separate company to JCB - Joe Bamford did previously work for the family business, Bamfords of Uttoxeter, however parted ways with them prior to starting up JCB in 1945.

Terrible corrupt company, Bamford was a crook. Would deliberately put suppliers out of out business, never paid anyone what they owed. I would love to know how many machines out there have stolen parts on them, cos it must be quite a few.

@@craigsibley8161 It's always been that way. Even small timers aren't immune from being lizards. Just watched some 1928 Ford film for their auto dealers. How to make the show rooms and garage areas clean as a whistle and how to hustle up repair work. Independent garages were taking a lot of the repair business. The film shows a fictional dealership owner and his general manager driving across town to a independent garage about 2/3rds in. The place is doing a lot of business. The owner comes out, knows who they are. Shakes their hands and they make small talk. Let's them walk around the garage. This was silent movies days. The dealership owner says "This fellow ought to be cut off the discount list. We should get his Ford repair business". That's pretty low class. That was the official Ford stance. Obviously one should strive to get market share. But, that borders on unethical. The independent garage owner was too trusting of the shark. You probably won't bother, but it's the latest video on the channel of RUclipsr A Model A.

Don't forget that the company was fined € 39.6 million in 2000 for trying to fix the EU market in earthmoving equipment. That's why Bamford hates the EU so much !

I'm a retired software engineer but I heard of them. You drive by any job site, and chances are you will see at least one JCB machine in about half of them. Mostly the skid loaders and telescopic stuff. Maybe the yellow color makes you think Caterpillar. Like white and orange and small means Bobcat. JCB is mostly yellow with black. Cat is yellow. Hitachi is orange. I'm weird like that.
JCB today began work on a new $500 million factory in North America - the biggest-ever investment in the company’s history
The start of construction was signalled at an official ground breaking ceremony at the site in San Antonio, Texas, where The Hon. Alice Bamford, daughter of company Chairman Anthony Bamford, cut the first sod of earth.
Work on the 720,000 sq. ft (67,000m²) factory is under way on a 400-acre site and will create 1,500 new jobs over five years. It will be the company’s second largest plant, rivalled only by the manufacturer’s World HQ in Rocester, Staffordshire, UK. The factory will make Loadall telescopic handlers and aerial access equipment, with production scheduled to start in 2026. The factory will also have the capacity to expand into the manufacture of other products in the future.
      19,000 people work for them.

@@user-re6yo7tj5s I have no idea why not hearing about them means they are no good. In my other comment, I mentioned I'm a retired Software Engineer. It was in banking. The clients are financial institutions. It is the backbone for about 150-160 small time banks and credit unions. Put them all together into a bank, and the bank would be a "Name" based on the size. 750 people or so in the company. The name on the building means nothing to anyone that sees it. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The company is a guppy in a business of whales, with a very good reputation.
