The Circle of 5ths EXPLAINED!

  • Finally an explanation of the circle of 5ths (or 4ths) that can be understood. We're going to apply it in 3 different ways also, compositionally by learning about switching between keys, practically by helping to memorize chord progressions, and educationally by identifying key signatures.

    I am an advanced player and learned everything by ear. But I came to realize my ignorance was holding me back. Now that I'm learning this stuff, my musical experience has jumped light years ahead because it's explained things I already know and allowed me to extrapolate on that to learn even more. The key is, finding a good teacher. This guy is an excellent teacher. One example: besides just talking about notes he explains how fifths and thirds, etc., look on the neck within the context of a major scale. This helps you visualize, which is crucial on guitar because it's tuned a little weird and not as obvious as piano. So, he integrates various senses to make learning easier. I could go on. This guy is an excellent teacher.

    yeah, I have to admit that this was the most helpful youtube video on the circle of 5ths, a part of theory that has terrorized me for a lifetime. My 20 something year old self talking to the "formally trained musician" boyfriend, asking "if I had to learn just one thing in music theory, what should it be?.. jazz trained bf states "the circle of fifths". 20 something me looks into circle of 5ths in a number of books and scrutinizes the graphics on these pages, certain that anyone with moderate intellect should be able to see a pattern there. 10 years later and not one bit more enligtened on the subject, I maybe googled circle of fifths, probably found a wiki page, and went through the same self-depricating exercise. A few dozen youtube videos later, only further deepening the gaping vortex of "shit I do not understand". 9/27/2020, finally effing get it. Thanks Sean Daniels.

There are allot of things i am ok with but feel that my speed, and chord transitioning as well as meandering in and out of the different positions of the diatonic and minor scales should be better. I'm a beginner with less than a year and half into the practice of guitar playing, Thank you for breaking down these two concepts (circle 4ths and 5ths). It's the first time I feel I got a grasp of this "circle" you simplified for me to now actually understand it. I'd like to now apply it to soloing if possible.
    I was recently using a backing track in Key of G (and was actually G7). The tracks rhythm was already laid out for me (5th was E7 and 4th was C7. I also noticed that the two other chords used were A7 and D7 and were then to me like 3rds). In the same practice exercise I also had to come up with my own solo.
    On the solo when I was in G7, I'd use a G note as the 'root note beggining that particular bars solo. I wonder now if for example when chords in one bar were G7 if I'd start solo with using let's say four notes in that bar of E (5th) or C (4th) note would that play a harmonious solo instead of using a G note beginning my solo (... and so on like when in C7 if I'd use a A (5th) note to begin that bars solo, ect?
    All your lessons are very simply put so for a beginner like me I am able to understand the concepts you teach.

    BTW sean can you do more practical music theory lessons? Like even though I kind of have the "skills" to play good guitar (in terms of physical skills), I'm not confident in myself as a guitar player because I can't just play. I mean, i want to be able to play and learn songs at any time or be able to jam with people and improvise and have a great understanding of how the guitar works so I can teach myself new things with my previous knowledge. It just seems like all these really good guitar players I see just "know" how to play and no one seems to be able to teach the necessary things to become a really good guitarist. I'm willing to donate and pay for lessons specific to this and I hope you're consider it! Also since most beginners might not know which kinds of things to learn first it'd be cool if you did something like this and added into a chronological playlist so people can spend a lot of time practicing each part.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 лет назад +17

      Harmony theory can get complicated if you don't learn it one step at a time. Just learn the cycle in both directions. Doing so will reveal interval relationships that will become the very useful language of harmony.

    This fellow is using the Circle of Fifths as originally designed in 1728. Since then it has never changed. Unfortunately using this circle forces you to explain dominant to tonic harmonic motion in counterclockwise fashion. I proposed years ago that the circle should array in the opposite direction so dominant motion is clockwise. In that way 12 o'clock resolves to 1 o'clock. Also, the diatonic cycle in C can be observed to move clockwise at these hours: 12 -1-10-11-12-1-11-12 by moving from the outer circle to the inner circle and back again. C - F - Bo - Em -Am - Dm - G - C. Distance around the circle tells you relative harmonic distance. For example, C and F# are six hours apart and have virtually nothing to do with each other. On the other hand, G, C, and F are next to each other and are closely related as the primary triads in C.

  • @jfarrell21
    @jfarrell21 Год назад

    I think this, and many other videos, is great. I do have a small problem using the term "interval. I think it can confuse. They're not really intervals, which I take to mean distance between. C is the 1, so the interval should be 4 to get to G. G is the 5th degree in the key of C. That makes far more sense to me.

    F# to Db is technically considered a 6th because F to D is a sixth. Although they're enharmonic, it's F# to C# not Db. F to C is a fifth. Also enharmonically speaking, the key is Gb not F#. It's considered one of the flat keys. C, G, D, A, E, B, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb. From C to F is circle of fifths with each key getting an additional #. From F to Gb is circle of fourths with each key getting an additional flat note.

      Thanks Nick! So most of my videos have an Audix m1255b shotgun mic going into an Apogee Ensemble preamp that I mix in Logic 9. I shoot with a Nikon D600 and edit in Final Cut Pro X, which I also used to do the Circle graphics.

      Sean Daniel So the one mic is capable of picking up both your voice and the guitar?

    Pardon my nit picking, at 3:30. You do not move down a 4th from C to F, it's down a 5th. Innocent slip, I know. I prefer counter-clockwise, thinking "up a 4th," since the "V of V" leads us that way. "I Will Survive" is a total circle of 5ths. 4ths? Perhaps this is the confusion: called Circle of 5ths, but typically we move up by 4ths. Love all your videos, my friend.

    OK, this is really cool! Just last night I was trying to figure out why the cords I was using sounded good to me but didn’t really fit according to the key that I thought it was in and that my phone app was telling me it was in.
    I was using the circle of fifths without knowing what that meant; it just sounded good to me.
    That is really cool especially finding out the next day what was puzzling me and seemed a real mystery.
    I just wondered if I was a rule breaker and just liked the way it sounded. I didn’t know that it was fitting in a rule or a principal that I didn’t know about.

      mine was Fat Cat Got Drowned At East Bondi (Fat Cat was a character on a children's TV show, and Bondi is the name of a suburb here in Sydney, Australia, for those who don't know). helped me remember it haha :)
      i never really saw it as starting you at 11 o'clock on the circle of fifths - while the sequence of note names is the same, in this case it refers specifically to the sharps/flats you see in the key signature, NOT the name of the corresponding key. in which case it actually starts you at 1 o'clock for G Major (F#). 12 o'clock has no sharps, so it is not included in the rhyme.

    This one helped a lot!
    But one thing I'm wondering is, in the Eagles' example, you go from a Bmin to a F#maj and later from an Amaj to an Emin. I understand that F# is the 5th of B and E is the fifth of A but I'm stumped on why you can just pick a min or a maj chord to move to. Sounds cool though. Maybe you can just throw around majs and mins if it sounds cool?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 лет назад +2

      Yup exactly! The general idea is if you start with a major one, the 5th would be major also, but sometimes switching it up will still sound great because the relationship between the root notes are so strong it stays grounded.

    • @svarthelikoptern
      @svarthelikoptern 7 лет назад +1

      Interesting! Thanks for that idea, I'm sure it'll help me break out of the box. I'm going to spice it up with some dominant and 6 chords, like the ones you showed us in your other videos.
