The Circle of 5ths EXPLAINED!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 сен 2024
- Finally an explanation of the circle of 5ths (or 4ths) that can be understood. We're going to apply it in 3 different ways also, compositionally by learning about switching between keys, practically by helping to memorize chord progressions, and educationally by identifying key signatures.

3 yrs ago you did this video. I just found it today in 2020. This is the most USEFUL explanation of the circle of 5ths. that I have seen. A belated thanks to you Sean.
Kevin O'Rourke
Happy to help my dude!
I am an advanced player and learned everything by ear. But I came to realize my ignorance was holding me back. Now that I'm learning this stuff, my musical experience has jumped light years ahead because it's explained things I already know and allowed me to extrapolate on that to learn even more. The key is, finding a good teacher. This guy is an excellent teacher. One example: besides just talking about notes he explains how fifths and thirds, etc., look on the neck within the context of a major scale. This helps you visualize, which is crucial on guitar because it's tuned a little weird and not as obvious as piano. So, he integrates various senses to make learning easier. I could go on. This guy is an excellent teacher.
Thanks so much for saying so!
Sometimes......words are hard to find.....I'm definitely not quitting my day job.....ha!!!.... I'm 61.....!!!
circle of fifths explained with power chords... Mind blowing ! it was just under my nose and didn't connect dots until you explained it. so many thanks.
So great to hear!
If I could give more than one thumbs up, I would! I've watched countless videos on this and none of them really made sense. YOURS DOES. Finally. You're brilliant!
Hello Rob, fancy bumping into you here. You'll find Sean, apart from being insane on occasions, a fantastic tutor.
Thanks so much Rob!
Rob G rob I swear I see your comments everywhere, you watch music is win too don't you
Haha yep!!
exact same for me.
I also find it very helpful to remember that whatever key I am in if I want to go a 5th higher, I just raise the 4th. To go a 4th, lower the 7th. Great video, thanks for posting.
yeah, I have to admit that this was the most helpful youtube video on the circle of 5ths, a part of theory that has terrorized me for a lifetime. My 20 something year old self talking to the "formally trained musician" boyfriend, asking "if I had to learn just one thing in music theory, what should it be?.. jazz trained bf states "the circle of fifths". 20 something me looks into circle of 5ths in a number of books and scrutinizes the graphics on these pages, certain that anyone with moderate intellect should be able to see a pattern there. 10 years later and not one bit more enligtened on the subject, I maybe googled circle of fifths, probably found a wiki page, and went through the same self-depricating exercise. A few dozen youtube videos later, only further deepening the gaping vortex of "shit I do not understand". 9/27/2020, finally effing get it. Thanks Sean Daniels.
Not many people have your gift of speaking naturally and simply, yet concisely, accurately and engagingly. You’re a natural teacher and musician. Well done.
thanks Dan
@@seandaniel23 I shouldn’t have called it a “gift” since that almost suggests you were just “given” something. It’s a skill - one that requires years of diligent practice and, above all, passion - in addition to natural talent. Good on you mate.
Learning the wheel of 5ths / 4ths completely by memory is invaluable...great lesson
I love listening to music, and thru your lessons i see how its made. thanks there's one like you.
Thanks so much Cesar!
Sean you make the best theory lesson.
Thanks so much!
@@seandaniel23 I have been playing for about 3 years, and feel like i put more time into theory than i did with actually playing. There are allot of things i am ok with but feel that my speed, and chord transitioning as well as meandering in and out of the different positions of the diatonic and minor scales should be better. I am at an inpass as to which way to go with this.
I am really trying hard to memorize the circle of 5ths right now and this is helping. Thanks for putting this out there.
I was just watching this and You started playing hotel California and I realized that it seemed like an unreachable goal last march when I started. Now I picked up the guitar and did it just like that, and it is just such a great feeling. As I am thinking about this past year I can't help but feel grateful for all the help You provide to a newbie like me to become a better player. Practical knowledge on a variety of things from music theory through technical things to improvisation advises. Your channel truly is a gem among the so many otherwise great channels. By this time You are probably getting eyesour from the text wall so I will just finish with a thank you!
Man thanks so much for reaching out! So cool to hear that you're improving! Keep it going!
Ok man I'm going to give your Circle of 5ths explanation a try, last time I tried, I ended up naked in the desert high on Peyote planning to over throw the Queen of Canada. Wish me luck.
Man I hope you made it back ok!
Im not the only one !!!
Thx Sean - I watched two or three videos about the COFs and your’s answered some Qs and filled the gaps in terms of how to use it…particularly in terms of where to find borrowed chords when writing in specific keys.
Rock on!
So cool to hear it was helpful!
Sean, your humor is another reason I watch your lessons. And now I know more about the circle of 5ths.
Thanks so much Patrick! I'll keep em coming!
You always explain all the hard stuff in a way that makes sense and you make it easy to understand. You've helped me so much in understanding chords, scales etc. Definetely one of the best guitar teachers on youtube
Thanks so much Jesse!
This is the first time this has ever made sense to me, thanks!
Thanks for watching Jason!
That was, without question, the best explanation of the circle of fifths I've ever heard. All the other guitar teachers on RUclips should be embarrassed of the simplicity and practicality of this video. Bravo.
Thank you so much! I feel honored :)
Extremely helpful and easy to understand. I've seen many tutorials on the Circle of Fifths but finally I can see how it can be of use to me.
Thanks so much Jeff!
thanks for staying on topic & making this very easy to understand. I've watched countless videos on the circle of 5ths & this is by far the easiest to understand. thanks buddy
Thanks so much for saying so!
Thanks a lot Sean seen this circle story for yeaes and never could get my head around it . When someone actually explains it is brilliant .Thanks for your time and generosity .
+martyn spooner So great to hear that it made sense! Thanks for watching!
Sean you are such a great teacher - even already knowing the circle of 5th I enjoyed your way to explain it very much.
Man thanks so much Thomas!
Brilliant! Three months into my music course and thank G-d I came across your videos. The clarity is amazing and the pace is spot on! You are truly special!
Wow, I'm now learning a song in the key of A and couldn't understand WTF there was a D#dim chord. Thanks to your smooth explanation I get it now. The 5th of A is E and the 7th of E is D#dim. Thanks!
So great to hear!
I'm a beginner with less than a year and half into the practice of guitar playing, Thank you for breaking down these two concepts (circle 4ths and 5ths). It's the first time I feel I got a grasp of this "circle" you simplified for me to now actually understand it. I'd like to now apply it to soloing if possible.
I was recently using a backing track in Key of G (and was actually G7). The tracks rhythm was already laid out for me (5th was E7 and 4th was C7. I also noticed that the two other chords used were A7 and D7 and were then to me like 3rds). In the same practice exercise I also had to come up with my own solo.
On the solo when I was in G7, I'd use a G note as the 'root note beggining that particular bars solo. I wonder now if for example when chords in one bar were G7 if I'd start solo with using let's say four notes in that bar of E (5th) or C (4th) note would that play a harmonious solo instead of using a G note beginning my solo (... and so on like when in C7 if I'd use a A (5th) note to begin that bars solo, ect?
All your lessons are very simply put so for a beginner like me I am able to understand the concepts you teach.
Your welcome :) Happy to help.
U are a real guru man. I am taking notes and labelled "Notes by Sean Daniel". Thank you.
Thanks so much for saying so, i'll keep it up!
I've spent the past two hours watching various videos of yours, learning, and taking many notes. My brain now feels full, and that's something I haven't felt in awhile, so thank you very much!
Thanks so much for the support! Happy to help :)
Superb lesson. I have watched so many lessons on Circle of 5th etc, but not one explained how to use it. Makes so much clearer, like the Hotel California example. Bravo.
BTW a suggestion on the video. Keeping a small picture of the circle of 5th on the top right, would make it easier. Still thats just gravy.
I find these tutorial videos that you produce the most enjoyable Sean ...... thanks for another, on the subject I've been eagerly awaiting. Thanks again for your efforts ......
Always happy to help Phil!
I love your channel there is always so much to learn. A lot of channels take so long to make the point but I still wish you would slow down just a little bit, not too much but maybe just a little bit. Pebber Brown took 45 minutes to explain the circle of fifths to his class which is on his channel. But still really good stuff here Sean Daniel!
Thanks so much! I'll keep it up!
Brother Sean your are different from all RUclipsrs because of your introduction. 😊
Haha, thanks so much! I try :)
Best intros ever.
we can all agree this man is the best teacher lol, undoubtedly
The anti clockwise way of reading this circle also helps you finding the right blues harp to accompany the guitar. Blues harps are mostly used in the same key as the leading instrument or in the subdominant key (4th).
Good tip, I didn't know that!
See? Now you do :-)
......🎵🎼🎶🎸🤠.... God bless you, Sir......I am learning......it makes sense and will help me build a few improvised songs that I created for my family....🤗....from my head and heart.... thanks....🤓
Straight up, this video blew my tiny little mind. You can borrow chords?!... You've just given me a reasoned method to composing, rather than just attaching an Em to a C and calling it a day. Thanks, sensei.
THANK YOU SEAN! I was about to ask you to make a video about it but you just read my mind and upload the video already, you rock brother.
I got you!
thank you as always for a thoughtful way to explain. This was very helpful! especially being able to borrow chords from another key! You are awesome.
Thanks so much!
Couldn't have clicked on this any faster. Thanks Sean you're a great teacher!
Thanks so much!
watched numerous videos on this circle and this one made the most sense
Ive been binge watching your videos - you're an excellent teacher, dude
I found this video while looking for ninja moves. Wanted to learn circle of fists but now here i am learning a more passive skill. thank you.
Great video. I know nothing about reading music. You lost me at " Your uncle's beverage volume of choice." You are a good teacher, and I will learn a lot from you. Have a fantastic day.
Thanks so much!
Very comprehensive video, covering most aspects of the circle. I will always remember the day I finally "got" the circle of 5ths as the day I finally started to feel I was really learning music theory.
Definitely a hugely important tool!
I use the circle of 5ths in lead guitar. I go up a 5 from the key I'm in and play that major scale.
or a 4th and play the major scale.. I've increased or decreased a sharp/flat doing so (changing keys. :)
Thanks for the lesson. Rock on ! :))
Great way to do it Anthony! Thanks for watching!
Best way i have ever seen circle of fifths explained, nice one Sean, makes a good deal of sense!
Thanks so much!
I am a guitar beginner and can't even play a complete song as of now. But i m watching ur videos to learn all the music theories becos i wish someday i m able to compose my own song. Thanks for all the video.
I'm totally confident you'll be able to compose your own songs soon! Stick with it!
This is an excellent lesson on theory… really helps in explaining in a manner that is understandable, the circle of 5ths!
Thanks Sean!
I especially like it when it comes to writing songs and using a chord that is not in the chord progression to give just a slightly different feel, really adds a lot!
BTW sean can you do more practical music theory lessons? Like even though I kind of have the "skills" to play good guitar (in terms of physical skills), I'm not confident in myself as a guitar player because I can't just play. I mean, i want to be able to play and learn songs at any time or be able to jam with people and improvise and have a great understanding of how the guitar works so I can teach myself new things with my previous knowledge. It just seems like all these really good guitar players I see just "know" how to play and no one seems to be able to teach the necessary things to become a really good guitarist. I'm willing to donate and pay for lessons specific to this and I hope you're consider it! Also since most beginners might not know which kinds of things to learn first it'd be cool if you did something like this and added into a chronological playlist so people can spend a lot of time practicing each part.
Great suggestion! So far I've just been making the theory things one lesson at a time but I'm thinking about making some more beginner lessons that can be taken more chronologically. Stay tuned and if you can think of a specific concept you're having trouble wrapping your mind around, let me know!
Sean Daniel thanks Sean! i'm just happy if you even consider it :)
Harmony theory can get complicated if you don't learn it one step at a time. Just learn the cycle in both directions. Doing so will reveal interval relationships that will become the very useful language of harmony.
Love your videos/info/presentation/humor/guests and method etc.
Thanks so much Suzanne.
Sean could you possibly make a video about what intermediate guitar players should work on theory such as caged system and this, what should we learn first you know, have a good foundation to start from... Thank you for your videos.
Great idea for a vid!
So helpful, I've never understood why sometimes I'm playing chords outside of my key but they don't sound wrong.
+Joey Young Happy to help Joey!
You lost me at 00:01. Just kidding, great stuff!
Haha, thanks for sticking with it.
my nephews are pretty good i just keep getting 5ths
This fellow is using the Circle of Fifths as originally designed in 1728. Since then it has never changed. Unfortunately using this circle forces you to explain dominant to tonic harmonic motion in counterclockwise fashion. I proposed years ago that the circle should array in the opposite direction so dominant motion is clockwise. In that way 12 o'clock resolves to 1 o'clock. Also, the diatonic cycle in C can be observed to move clockwise at these hours: 12 -1-10-11-12-1-11-12 by moving from the outer circle to the inner circle and back again. C - F - Bo - Em -Am - Dm - G - C. Distance around the circle tells you relative harmonic distance. For example, C and F# are six hours apart and have virtually nothing to do with each other. On the other hand, G, C, and F are next to each other and are closely related as the primary triads in C.
I think this, and many other videos, is great. I do have a small problem using the term "interval. I think it can confuse. They're not really intervals, which I take to mean distance between. C is the 1, so the interval should be 4 to get to G. G is the 5th degree in the key of C. That makes far more sense to me.
Best explanation yet! Most videos explain how to draw the circle and that's about it. Interesting about Hotel California. I totally understand what you are saying about the songs progression.
Happy to help :)
Thank you for the clear explanation! You are my go-to for music theory
Always happy to help!
Finally a proper lesson on circle of 5ths!! I've been trying to understand this for quite sometime though books and videos. Thank you Sean!! You're a GENIUS!!!!
No problem! Happy you finally found the video you've been looking for :)
I finally understand it! Thank you so much. Subscribed.
Welcome to the party!
Great explanation of complicated material. Thank you so much. By knowing how the chords relate on this circle can you identify the change in coloring that would result from a key change? For example, clockwise more urgent and sad and counter clockwise more laid back and happy?
Finally someone who makes sense.
Welcome to the party!
You have great videos! You make it so easy to learn because you are hilarious, you know your stuff and how explain it, and last (but very important for me), your videos are short and to the point! Thanks
Always happy to help Becky! Thanks for watching!
This was hands down the best way I've seen this topic explained! I'm gonna watch this a few more times so that it sinks in my head, but thank you so much! Btw, what part of the country are you in? The way you close certain words is unique.
Thank you so much :) Happy to help!
Why have I waited so long to watch this video ?
This is amazing stuff !
+Thomas Clevers thanks for checking it out Tomas!
Great lesson, Sean, but I hope you won't mind if I point out a mistake. At both 7:22 and 8:56 (in the Hotel California example) you say that the chord progression ends on F#m. However, it's actually F# (major) or F#7. Take a listen to the original when you get a chance and/or check out the authorized transcription. Again, great job ... thanks!
Thanks for the correction Charlie! I've just been playing it wrong the whole time :)
You're welcome, my friend. Keep up the good work!
Excellent video brother. I have never heard a breakdown like that before! Awsome!
Thanks so much!
Incredible, your video makes most sense than other youtubers.
Also, I find myself to directly apply whatever you teach.

Hey Joe is a great song to start learning this for beginners. Videos are awesome. Thanks.
I'll cast this again with my guitar thank-you yes I need this for playing great stuff :)
Happy to help!
OH MY GOD. A circle of fifths explanation that makes sense. I have been looking for this for years it seems.
Happy to help!
Awesome lessons as always...
Thanks!
Thank you ,you helped me a lot
Happy to help!
Great video! Pretty guitar, too
Thanks so much!
I already knew about this but I learned more watching thanks Sean but you forgot to explain that if there's no flats or sharps it could be C major or its relative minor A. Or 1 sharp could be G major or E minor
Thanks for watching Vince! Yeah probably should've mentioned minor, oh well!
Once more i come here and learn, wich is amazing as i clicked on quite several video " lessons". I say just the same as Rob G!!!
If i only had ten thumbs...
Thanks so much Alexandre!
No! Thank you Sean
Poaching chords.. I like it.. Great explanation. Ta.
Happy to help!
He never fails to disappoint!
Happy to help!
F# to Db is technically considered a 6th because F to D is a sixth. Although they're enharmonic, it's F# to C# not Db. F to C is a fifth. Also enharmonically speaking, the key is Gb not F#. It's considered one of the flat keys. C, G, D, A, E, B, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb. From C to F is circle of fifths with each key getting an additional #. From F to Gb is circle of fourths with each key getting an additional flat note.
Just found your channel and is a great way of explaining such a generally confusing topic/method!
Welcome to the party David! Glad it was helpful!
Can you please consider doing a lesson on ear training? I dont want play my chords just by their names. Where do i begin to understand the sound?
Great idea for a video!
You've got a real talent for teaching and simplifying things! Quick question...what equipment/software do you use to record your video and audio ?
Thanks Nick! So most of my videos have an Audix m1255b shotgun mic going into an Apogee Ensemble preamp that I mix in Logic 9. I shoot with a Nikon D600 and edit in Final Cut Pro X, which I also used to do the Circle graphics.
Sean Daniel So the one mic is capable of picking up both your voice and the guitar?
Valuable explanation. Thanks for sharing
Dear Lord, I finally understand this. Thank you, Sean!
That's great! No problem :)
Great explanation! Thank you again for your tutelage.
Pardon my nit picking, at 3:30. You do not move down a 4th from C to F, it's down a 5th. Innocent slip, I know. I prefer counter-clockwise, thinking "up a 4th," since the "V of V" leads us that way. "I Will Survive" is a total circle of 5ths. 4ths? Perhaps this is the confusion: called Circle of 5ths, but typically we move up by 4ths. Love all your videos, my friend.
Brilliant lesson...! You are eloquent and have really cool visual support!
Thanks so much!!
So good! Thanks so much
Happy to help!
dude your videos are so fucking insightful and helpful. keep it up bro!
+Osiniks Thanks so much for reaching out and saying so. I'll keep em coming1
"Aside from my uncle's favorite beverage volume." Fucking genius 😂
:)
OK, this is really cool! Just last night I was trying to figure out why the cords I was using sounded good to me but didn’t really fit according to the key that I thought it was in and that my phone app was telling me it was in.
I was using the circle of fifths without knowing what that meant; it just sounded good to me.
That is really cool especially finding out the next day what was puzzling me and seemed a real mystery.
I just wondered if I was a rule breaker and just liked the way it sounded. I didn’t know that it was fitting in a rule or a principal that I didn’t know about.
Very nice, thank you!
Happy to help!
I remember trying to memorize this. lol, (Father Charles Go Down And End Battle) is as far as I got. Never understood why the piano tutorial started me on 11 o'clock.
Father Charles was a total bad ass.
mine was Fat Cat Got Drowned At East Bondi (Fat Cat was a character on a children's TV show, and Bondi is the name of a suburb here in Sydney, Australia, for those who don't know). helped me remember it haha :)
i never really saw it as starting you at 11 o'clock on the circle of fifths - while the sequence of note names is the same, in this case it refers specifically to the sharps/flats you see in the key signature, NOT the name of the corresponding key. in which case it actually starts you at 1 o'clock for G Major (F#). 12 o'clock has no sharps, so it is not included in the rhyme.
love these educational videos, so useful!
Happy to help!
This is great, but I'm pretty sure in Hotel California it's an F#7. Just a nitpick though. Thanks! This explained all my questions about the circle of fifths.
Thanks for checking it out!
Omg finally someone that made this click in my head thank god
So great to hear!
Thanks so much for the awesome video !
May I ask what graphics software you are using ???
Thanks !
Thanks for watching! I edit everything with Keyframes and text in Final Cut Pro
The only teacher I can follow along with. Thanks +Sean Daniel
My guy!
Great lesson! I wish I had you as a teacher when I was younger.
Better late than never my man!
Great Sean helped me very much !!
This one helped a lot!
But one thing I'm wondering is, in the Eagles' example, you go from a Bmin to a F#maj and later from an Amaj to an Emin. I understand that F# is the 5th of B and E is the fifth of A but I'm stumped on why you can just pick a min or a maj chord to move to. Sounds cool though. Maybe you can just throw around majs and mins if it sounds cool?
Yup exactly! The general idea is if you start with a major one, the 5th would be major also, but sometimes switching it up will still sound great because the relationship between the root notes are so strong it stays grounded.
Interesting! Thanks for that idea, I'm sure it'll help me break out of the box. I'm going to spice it up with some dominant and 6 chords, like the ones you showed us in your other videos.
Well explained. Very nice. Very helpful, thank you very much professor
Happy to help Jason!
