I think the genius in this is what it doesn't show. I've used circle of fifths charts before, but there's so much noise with all the other notes and chords there next to what I want, it's not all that intuitive or helpful. This blocks all that out so I have what's relevant, and only that. Very cool, I'll be ordering one!
Yes, exactly!! There is nothing worse than staring at a circle of fifths cart with all the extra noise of other keys you don't want to focus on... we thought it was about time it got easier!
I got a chuckle out of this. I started learning guitar in 1959 with a copy of the Nick Manoloff Guitar Method Book 1. It came with a cardstock chord wheel, about 10 inches across, similar to the one you demonstrate here. I had never seen another one like it since. I sure wish I still had that book and chord wheel because I could still learn a lot more from it. Also Books 2 & 3 in the series.
@@seandaniel23 I think the book was written in 1935 or something like that. The music store I got it from had been around our small town for decades. The book only cost me a dollar & change.
I got one of these a few months ago..if I had a small loss of memory or needed to check something I had a printed diagram..but I now have this little gem to help out✌️
Super clever device, and very well demonstrated. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with product reviews or demos of drool worthy gear that’s out of the price range of most mere mortals but this thing is actually useful, thanks for sharing 👍
You know, I know the flat 7 and secondary dominant are concepts my guitar teacher has gone over a couple times, but just seeing this in this format makes more sense. Will definitely recommend this for any new folks I know!
I have been at it for longer than i care to admit, and the more I learn, the more i am fascinated by the beauty of the most fundamental aspects of music, and things in general, its a trip
I have had one for several months now. It's alway on my music stand when I am playing. I don't know a lot of theory and this helps me know what chords to use.
Thanks for the demo and the discount code Sean. I have been taking my first steps into theory and you just made sense of the non sense. The tool is an awesome product. Just ordered mine 😊
Possibly the BEST video I have seen - you , sir know how to teach - I've been playing guitar at church reading "chord charts" for over 40 years and the last 10 years I've been YOUTUBING IT but not really understanding it like I want - such a cool tool!!
Hey Sean what a great tool. I will order it. The one thing I might add are the actual 3 notes for each chord somewhere rather than the numbers. But awesome invention! Bob

Sean, I got all fired up about this. Because of you promoting this great product they are sold out! It's ok. I'll check back later! Thanks for letting us know about it.
Very cool! You're one smart guy. I think you should focus on this kind of stuff in your video's. Beginner/ intermediate lessons, as it is easy to get discouraged playing the same stuff over / over again. It may seem boring to you, you're way past this stage, but making an income may work at this level.
C Major is 2 half-scales: CDEF,GABC. G major is 2 half-scales: GABC,DEF#G. D major is DEF#G,ABC#D. And so on, all around the circle of fifths. Each half-scale is 2 halfsteps, 2 halfsteps, 1 halfstep. Each half-scale is separated by 2 halfsteps, from the previous one: 2-2-1--2--2-2-1= a full scale.
The circle of fifths is super important for contemporary pop music. It's a very basic and strict set of rules. I learned all of this early on in my career but I realized that this theory system is limited and applies mostly to modern pop music.
Well, I mean, in german we would not even put this under "music theory", we literally call it "common music knowledge". Apart from that, music theory also looks at other things than pitch, for example rhythm/meter, timbre, form... But hey, if that thing helps people to get into it, why not?
Good vid. I'd suggest trying around with simpler thumbnails with fewer different things in the thumbnail and less text, and putting the one or two things front and centre and visible/distinct, to get more clicks onto videos
I think I 'sort of' agree with you Sean. I don't 'teach' guitar, but I have 'coached' a few folks from being a player to playing in a band. To your point here, knowing the 1, 6m, 4, 5 in C,A,G,E,D is a must know. What seemed to work best was finding a song, usually 60's or 70's, that used the famous 1, 6m, 4, 5. Playing that enough times so they refer to the chords in numeric and not letters. Then transpose it from C to A, to G and so on. People get confused between the chord and position of the chord in the song because they are the same name. So we would only say the key once, then refer to the chord by number. When they understand that everything else seems to click. Then use the tool for reference? If that makes any sense?? Just some thoughts... 8) --gary PS; I know I left out B and F, that was just to simplify it. 8)

I think that it would sound different if you played the chords in different orders each time, like if you played say A,G,Em,D would sound different if you played Em,A,D,G. Every time you mix it up it would sound different even though it is the same chords I think. It's a pretty cool and handy looking chord/chart wheel in my opinion.
Huh, so basically, any key your in, go back or foward 2 notes in the CoF, like in D, go back 2 and you get C and forward 2 you get E, but something like the key of E you could use a D Major or an F# Major chord?
Yes, from my understanding, not really diatonic to the key. They might call it an out of key chord Chord substitution or borrowed chord, from another key
The holy grail of music theory really is learning all the notes on your guitar so you know then instantly (it's not that hard) then learn Major and minor scales just one position and one Octave is fine at first, learn how chords are made, first major and minor then the extensions (there is a logical pattern) if you learn this you will have a base that makes learning a bit more advanced stuff easier, a lot easier. This video is okay but don't believe these "just learn this shape" videos they won't make a musician out of you.

This item looks really useful. I've struggled with music theory and I see how this could help me a lot. That said, the maker's website is confusing.
