For $200 it is excellent value for your homestead with the abundance of rocks you have. Nifty piece of repairing and it's good to go, doing twice as much as it was intended to do!

The 555 is rapidly becoming the “Swiss Army Knife” of the homestead. The repairs look great. The curve on the gussets look like a factory installation.

That curve in the reinforcement makes it look cool maybe do that to my 66” grapple if it starts cracking, the hydraulic lines on those are always a pain catching on things,great fix Mike, if you have any old tractor suitcase weights laying around you can hang them on rear bucket for more counter balance.
Obviously his salvage gene has an eye for beauty!
Hi Mike. Having a welder around the homestead sure is handy. With it, you can fix metal stuff that you would have had to replace, if you didn't have it. I'm still surprised by how many situations pop up that the welder is just perfect for. However, having welding slag drop down into your shoe is not at all fun, but it does wake you up! The grapple repairs you did should hold up pretty well. I was thinking, before you said it, that those steel rounds you found at the church demo site would be great for that repair!
I'm usually quite jealous of some of your fancy tools, but not this time. I have a set of metal shaping tools just like yours. A sledge, a pipe wrench, and even a Crescent wrench. One doesn't have to be a RUclipsr to own the good stuff.

Good job. One thing to consider sometime is putting plates on the clamping units - that weld the center flats to the outer flat. The piston to the pivot on the tractor. Will fortify the hands and make them stronger and won't wobble sideways. Good buy.
Hello Mike. Your Engineering degree is sure paying off with the repairs so far on the grapple. Those rounded gussets look like they really mean business for what they were designed for. Have good days!

That's what I like to see, reinforcement of my own methods of first carefully determining the maximum capabilities of a piece of equipment,🤔 and then immediately attempting to exceed them by a factor of three🤪. Thanks as always for the video, and take care.

Leaving the original curve from the steel you cut the gussets from actually makes it look factory.

If you look at disks plows, check out the way the hoses are suspended up by a round rod that bolts on and has a curl at the top of it! Might be a good idea to keep the hoses out of the way! Just trying to help out my friend! Just something I thought of from my past days working for the farmers!🤷🏼👌🏻
I bought a broken one almost identical to that. Guy ripped it apart with his skidsteer. Being a welder fabricator by trade I rebuilt the whole thing. Have $500 in it and it’s beefier than anything you can buy under $5k. I also made it a single grapple with a bigger cylinder instead of a dual. Wish I could post pictures on here. Might help give you ideas if you decided to beef it up.
I think this will work alright, maybe a few more gussets, my biggest hang up is weather or not to leave that cutting edge as is or weld teeth on it
@@CaptainKleemanI left my cutting edge but the bottom runners extend out past the cutting edge. Basically the cutting edge is flat on the bottom but has teeth parallel with the ground. I can rake and grade with it. Sorta look at it like a backhoe, Not the best equipment for a job but decent at doing everything.

Cut the cutting edge around the bottom runners making teeth.
Nice repair job, like the approach to adding in gussets to strengthen the grapple bucket. The thing I found over the course of that type of repair work is as you strengthen one point it transfers the weak point some place else down the line, but as you repair that point one usually ends up with the heavy duty version of the attachment, and the repair experiences, one might call it a win win, who knew! Mike could you rig up what they call a pogo stick on the top middle of the grapple with heavy springs to hold the hydraulic lines toward the middle of the grapple..?

That grapple was definitely a good buy, now you've got the extra capacity to use more attachments, you could like DP make your own tree limb cutting attachment. 👍

Insufficient material thickness is what it looks like Mike , that’s a big problem with factory made products on an assembly line! Downfall for the company! Double it up as much as possible, Mike! Metal isn’t supposed to tear like that brother, that’s why I say insufficient material thickness! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻 But that’s totally up to your choosing brother! Owned a brush grapple for use with a Takeuchi. The cylinder guard meta is too thin...1/4" iron would be preferable. Hydraulic hoses are just a pain no matter how you route them.
Based on it's construction, your grapple was built for light weight applications, brush, small limbs, etc. Your gusset addition should strengthen the closing jaw.

I was thinking the exact same thing just before you mentioned how essential the propane powered welder is to your operation.
Without it so much of what you’ve accomplished so far would have been a little more difficult to do.

That was a tease ….taking us to the Rock Bridge but didn’t even let us see it. We know that YOU got to see it! My only guess is that she wasn’t presentable for company and the time available didn’t allow for getting that addressed. Oh well, next time.
The grapple looked infinitely more potent and if it doesn’t somehow break, something else will as you go further into unchartered territory (for you/your place/your machinery). I liked all the improvements especially the curved gussets…could become a stylistic statement for others to follow.

@ 4:23 noticed the tarp on the dump truck build, I know you like to recycle and reuse, since you are in Evansville all the time for your job, find an outdoor advertising company BECAUSE the printed vinyl cover they use on billboards now make the best tarps and covers for log piles you can find / another trick I have used in the past is concrete testing facilities have the left over cylinders that they stress test they give away and they make great curbing on driveways, walks and landscaping and can be stacked at the transitions around your bridge projects and to stabilize intakes and outtakes of driveway culverts
Sometimes it's good practice to drill holes at the ends of the cracks. You may need to scab on reinforcing plates since the metal is likely fatigued past the area of the crack.

When I first started watching your channel, I was a little puzzled by your choice of stick welding. The fact that your engine driven one is also a generator makes sense for your situation, but the whole world seems to be doing the "trendy" thing of wire welding now. Well, since then, another RUclipsr, "Making Mistakes with Greg" has opened my eyes to things like root penetration and weld strength, and stick seems the way to get more of that. Flux core is better than MIG, but MIG is the worst for root penetration. Stick is a little harder to learn, but worth the pain. Now I wish I had a good stick welder!
That's part of it, but mig can be plenty strong if done right. The main reason is most of my welding is down outside. mig requires shielding gas, the wind can greatly affect the quality of the weld.

Before you get the new hoses look at the length of the pipes you have as the shorter 1 may be ok for the longer position?? Then you just need 2 new short ones 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍

That rock tested much more than the grapple. Really surprised the quick attach could hold that rock without breaking.
