Always pull the handle of the lever binder to tighten... Never push to tighten! If your hand slips off the handle can fling back and hit you. This is especially dangerous if using a pipe to tension and unloading the tension binder. Had a friend split his forehead wide open and knock himself out pushing on a tension binder. Never push!
He’s talking safety, but pushing the lever away, other than obvious, now you need to pop it to release and now all that tension is coming back in your direction, even if you stand off to the side. I used lever binders for years and never used it like this guys did. Now I only use the ratchet binders, cost more, but safer and easier.
Paint the edge of the ratchet chain binder handle a different color to quickly easily distinguish the pull to tighten procedure . Did you foreign drivers listen , NO FLIP FLOPS !

You said not to use a pipe or chain binder tool, to get the binder tighter. I've never seen anyone use a lever binder, without the tool or pipe.
