One reason why Magnus might have given up the bishop pair so freely in game 1: the dark squared bishop is actually not as valuable in positions like these (isolated queens pawn) because he will never be able to attack the square d5. By trading it for a knight (which moves on both color complexes) you effectively tip the scales for pieces that can actively fight for the d5 square in your favor.

If you think that you are safe…you are not! He strikes and knows the endgame will be his.
This is why I had little enthusiasm for the World Championship. This tourney is the real deal. Any tournament without Magnus just isn't the pinnacle of chess.
If Nepo cared more to learn from the recent WCC than be sulkily tweeting against it, he'd have known more of this position which Gukesh and Ding played. Magnus talked about it, appreciated it and learnt it and used it in his own way in the very last game. The difference is clear.
