I budget pretty much exactly like this, except I build in a buffer of extra money outside of the budget ($100-$300 usually) and towards the end of the month I'll start moving money around in the different categories as needed. As long as I don't go over my savings goal for the month I don't care. I also have a new system where any extra margin can be placed into savings buckets for different long term goals in later months, like travel. I can spend the money in those buckets outside of the regular monthly budget. If I don't have any long term goals to save for I just invest the margin in an index fund. Hi have you tried the 50, 30, 20 rule.
Example only. £1,000 per month.
1,000- 50% for bills
30% for savings.
20% what you live on.
