I like that tough flight I guess because I don’t have anything that even closely resembles that style..It looks like it would make a great all-around utility knife for work and around the house and not too scary for the office
Honestly my late 80's Buck 112 is the blade I would carry if I were concerned about hard use. I have field dressed several whitetail deer with it and can draw it right through the sternum no issues.
For hard use I got my Tops MSK 2.5 Not that I actually have to do any hard cutting tasks but, it's there if the need arises. Makes a good EDC knife as well when I don't wanna carry a folder.
My most beat on used smaller knife is an old Spyderco Delica 4. I carried it for 2 years straight as a back up user. Surprising how tough it is..It’s cut miles of cardboard, yard work etc., been covered in dirt and mud. The tang is all scratched up and a few scratches on blade. Only washed out with soap/water, blow dry, sharpen, strop and oil. It still looks new, no blade play and is much smoother. Cutting up some cardboard etc. is the best way to break in a new knife. I still like FRN cause it’s so tough and won’t scratch. I love smaller knives (Dragonfly 2’s etc). I’m in the minority but hated the CRKT Squid and not a fan of the Pilar either.
Sounds like you definitely got your money's worth with that Delica. I actually just received my S90V Benchmade Proper today, seems like a knife you might enjoy too. Thank you Thomas.
Completely agree with your assessment of the Large Pilar. The flipper tab isn’t necessary and the action isn’t great as a flipper. They should’ve made the large Pilar a bit larger.
Always glad to see another Knife Beater post. Tuff Lite is a winner. Don't have any of the others but have experience with the standard Buck 112. Like the Lion Steel a lot. My list to buy is getting longer.
Great content...on the large Pilar....i agree...leave it like the original without the flipper...one other thing on the tuff lite. I never understood the lanyard hole when the pocket clip is not adjustable and on the opposite end putting the lanyard hole in the pocket! I own and rotate one anyway. Phenomenal ergonomics
Love this type of knife! Tuff Lite and Pilar are the only ones Ive had much experience with so Ive got some ideas for knives to check out! Thanks Jay!!
Hi Jay Thank you for your list. I am very amazed that the Buck Ranger 112 is around and actually your No.1. Buck Ranger 112 was my first knife I bought by myself during the mid 80s. The design and toughness came to be my standards. Cheers
So far, all my favorite beaters seem to come from CRKT lol you mentioned 2 of them here, the Large Pilar and the BHQ Squid, but I also love the Large Batum. I wish they'd make a Large (lol Giant) Squid with the blade extended just enough for a nice choil like the Pilar and the handle of course extended just enough to house the blade. That would probably be my perfect hard-use EDC ☆
Cool examples, Jay. That's neat that you have probably extensive experience cross-pollinating pocket clips like that. There is a whole un-published science out there as to "what fits what" that is kind of un-tapped. Hmmmm..... idea for a future video for you?
Jay have you ever thought about a review of small edc Fixed blades?...not sure whats out there that can be carried daily that doesn't freak everyone out
Oh btw man that cold steel bush ranger came in today. And I couldn’t be happier, came smooth, sharp out of the box, astonishing fit and finish for $30, and I definitely will be buying them again
Great list! You guys have it soooo good. All those knive makers and dealers. You won't find that in the Netherlands. That makes that many knive become very expensive, even what is considered "budget".
Nice choices Jay I myself have a Tufflight with dessert tan scales, the CRKT Squid standard and I have a non-auto Buck 112 and finally I use a Spyderco with H1 steel, black blade and black scales.
Nice tough little knives! I like the Lionsteel pocket clip attachment on the butt there; no ugly holes on the show side, and good for lefties, too. Love the Gollum-colored squid.
I would go with the ruike p801 $30 knife 14c28n steel and caged ball bearing pivot it was my first frame lock knife and still one of my favorites, you can't beat the quality feel of this blade for $30 , and i think jay made a video on it in the past . You will love it i promise

@@flemishlion69 that a good start for a collection. I love my mini bugout , I have The storm trooper version black-and-white . I would still get the ruike 4 your collection.
Here's a link to that video - ruclips.net/video/JBHhz5Svf5g/видео.html. Adam is absolutely right about the Ruike P801, great knife. Ganzo Firebird and CJRB knives are good for the money. You can never go wrong with Civivi. I also like Steel Will knives, Bestech, Kizer Vanguard and Tangram. Let me know if you need more suggestions because I could keep going.
Since I have subbed to your channel, I enjoy your presentations more each time that I view your latest. Informative, accurate, no frills, to the "point", & mostly pleasantly entertaining. Keep it up!!! Regarding my EDC choices, I am 70 & have been a cutlery collector most of that time, so I tend to carry each of my favorites for a week or two, then switch out. I would embellish, but this vid is about you, not me!!!
I think part of the equation on hard use would be the quality of steel. Most of my basic knives are D2 which is fine. But if I am needing some seriously hard use, would stick to something that comes in s35vn or m390 myself. Just the price point sucks.
Hi Jay, good list of suitable knives. Guess you're right, I think, the CRKT Pilar doesn't need a flipper tab because the thumb hole opening option seems to be sufficient. Best, Daniel
I really like my non-serrated little native. It feels a bit stouter than my G-10 dragonfly, but I do miss some of the jimping. 2.5" length restriction at work, otherwise I'd have a bunch of other natives or a sage. In a 2.5" blade length, I think it's really important to get the ergonomics right - I'll go out of my way to make sure that they have a really good 4 fingered grip for my mostly medium sized hands.
I am subject to blade restrictions and I like my Spy Delica 4, mine has the Emerson hook. I would like to see a cheap but reliable folding carving knife-like one-handed locking EDC with a classic, somewhat thick wooden handle. Maybe I'll have to make it, haha. Props for showing your right hand up close!
The knives you mentioned are among my favourites! But Spyderco Lil’ Native occupies a special place in my heart because it fits my hand just perfectly (and probably because my girlfriend gave it to me as a birthday present) Thanks for the video!💚💚💚
Great list as usual. I personally would have to add the Mini Cutjack to the list. I'm weird and I like the FRN handles for hard use. I've had G10 scales that were really hard to get clean, especially sand. Also I recently discovered the Cold Steel Voyager Medium. 3" blade. It's AUS 8 but a good small beater.
Another cool top 5 list Jay and usually I own at least one of the ones listed, but I don't have any of these. Being retired/disabled (bad heart), hard use for any of my knives, regardless of size, would be opening more than one piece of mail in a day😊. Then again, if fidgeting could be considered hard use, then my knives catch hell all the time. Not many minutes pass by in a day that I don't have a knife in hand, fidgeting with it. In fact, I'm death on Omega springs. Can't tell you the number of times I've broken Omega springs on my Mini Griptilian, Mini Freek and Bugout.
@@stoneblue1795 apparently I put my knives through opening/closing cycles beyond what the average person does. During most of my waking hours, I have a knife in hand, fidgeting with it. For what it's worth, it's been the small size Omegas that break but not the large size. I have two full sized Griptilians that receive lots of fidget time but I've yet to break an Omega on either of them. The Omegas on my Mini Griptilian, Mini Freek and Bugout, which all use the small Omegas, have broken multiple times. At least the replacement Omegas from Etsy that I use are not expensive and they seem to be better than the BM factory springs. They seem to last longer anyway.

Hi Jay, thanks for another enlightening vid! Own a Cold Steel Tuff Light and am loving it! Would you know if the MSX clip you have on your Pilar be able to fit the Perpetua?
Coming back with a couple things. It's PEE'lar, a Latino girl's name that Hemingway chose for the name of his boat. As a life long writer by trade I resisted that knife for a long time. But now that it's D2 I may have to pop. If I do I'll use your link.
Hey mate, long time no view. I'm glad I watched this one. Personally, in respect to Spyderco, I like the Salt series. I have the H2 Salt 2. I've also got a Delica in ZDP. Both have the same style handle but of course, the blade shape and steel is different. One of the underrated smaller knives in my collection is a Buck B-500. It's a great little al-rounder.
Well, hard use I think means really bearing down on the blade as you are cutting, and for extended periods of time. Which yes, most any knife worth it's salt could stand up to, but for how many days? Frame locks and other types are more secure than a simple liner lock. Or just get a fixed blade, and remove all chance of mechanical failure entirely. G10/FRN scales with thin liners aren't as stable as titanium scales. They're likely to give well before titanium/steel does. Long winded here but you get the idea. All knives can take a beating, but how many beatings can they take before they break? That's what I think is meant by, hard use.
Yeah, "hard use" is pretty open for interpretation. Some might consider a knife as hard use if it withstands being dropped onto concrete. Others might consider corrosion resistance or surviving repeated spine whacks as measuring sticks.
Anybody else enjoy that momentary smile Jay gives right after he introduces each knife?
