Wow, you found this in a record store?!?! Amazing. Great review. This has me really excited to get mine. I love the "tale of the tape" weight comparison. No diecast but this isn't the 70's. Your enthusiasm and fun with this review seems to mirror the toy like fun of the design. Glad to see it's not a "break out the instructions" type transformation and the skegs really make it pretty stable. And happy you have no buyers remorse.
Random, but JB HiFi carry real toys and not just Pops! Plus they came in at a lower price than fan channel stores AND Amazon. Strange times we live in; but I’ll take it. I think you’ll like the compromises struck here A.R.P. Its certainly “pick up and play” worthy; but the stature allows for all those negative spaces to be loaded with technical detail. I hope this series goes for a good long while.

I would have preferred a HISS Driver to Baroness, and the hollow guns are inexcusable, making it look like a dollar store / pound shop toy, but i'm glad Hasbro finally made this. Reminds me of the crossover comics.

You are welcome! Happy to give the inside scoop early for a change. On balance, I’m still happy I got it. I really expected the worst but it’s definitely an aesthetic I can get behind if they do any more than this and Bumblebee. It’s on par with middle value TF’s at that size. And it holds Joes!
I watch like 30 other toy reviewers who talk about Transformers all the time, and some of them are even completely dedicated to only talking about Transformers, and with no offense to any of them, I look back to my memories of their reviews and realize that I'm pretty sure you're the only toy reviewer I have ever seen who has ever mentioned that they add nice details to the inside of the hollow parts. As always, love the reviews, but I just wanted you to know I appreciated that, as I always liked that too.
It’s great! They could have left them smooth and called it a day cos the surfaces would hardly be seen but they didn’t! And it’s everywhere, not just the areas I showed! They might not be giving us an MP quality build but they didn’t skimp on taking advantage of the large size and going in there with fine attention to technical details. Yeah man, I’m stoked. Great and realistic review. I’ve waited for GI Joe Transformers crossovers since I was a kid in the playground talking about the Marvel crossover comics in the 80s. Nothing is going to stop me enjoying these!
I think you’ll be happy with this. I am. If it was engineered more finely it wouldn’t be as rugged! And would cost a fair bit more.
An addendum to my previous comment:
I got mine in the mail and just got him out in the open. I haven’t transformed him yet, as I’m gonna do that later, and…
As a Transformer guy, yeah, he’s chonky. Yeah, he’s hollow too, but again, par for current Hasbro. He is, however, full of little details and things I could go into a ramble about.
Two biggest notes:
He has A-stance feet, which means less stability
At least on the HISS guns, he has blast effect posts, so if you have any of those from other Transformers, you can use them, and maybe from Classified figures too.
I think, aptly, you caught something a lot of Transformer reviewers don’t: he’s not a Transformer toy, or a GI Joe toy. He’s BOTH. By that I mean these are 80s toys. They’re big because they’re scaled to Joes, and they’re chonky because 80s transformers were.
Megs is hollow, but he’s not flimsy, and the design for him is what I’d expect an 80s Megatron to look like.
I’m impressed, which isn’t particularly easy.
Also, Megs’s fusion cannon looks like it has a blast effect port in the barrel.
I would have liked for him to store the fusion cannon somewhere hidden on the tank but I’m not complaining.
The foot pegs worked for my 86 BAT.
Nothing left to add other than your observations are on point! Now I’m curious to try my BATs on the pegs…

It's interesting to see this from a Joe fan perspective as most reviews I've seen are of the transformer. As someone who is fairly new to Joe aside from a few VHS tapes and the like these are a decent way to get the classic figures especially as the only baroness I had was that skinny retro classic one that was a Walmart exclusive
Excellent honest review! I appreciated knowing about your concerns ahead of getting Megahiss, and that they were largely alleviated when you had it in hand. I also like the fact that this is made as a "toy" to be played with, that really pushes it up a notch in my book, because play is exactly what I intend to do with it... and I'm really happy to know it has ratcheted knees, and it doesn't fall over. I have a few masterpiece Transformers, and I've probably transformed each one 2-3 times in total, and now they just exist as statues on a shelf... They are amazing feats of engineering, but not great "toys" to be played with.
The hollow body and limbs criticism of modern Transformers is legitimate, as is your reasoning why Megahiss had to be this way to accommodate the rest for the body and tank elements. They probably could have added some foldable panels to cover up the negative spaces, but I'd agree that it could start to make the toy more masterpiece like and complicated, taking away the toyeticness of it. I think they reached a good compromise. I don't collect modern Transformers, but I do on occasion pick up a mini bot here and there. I've gotten the recent Cybertron version of Bumblebee, Beach Comber, Powerglide and Cosmos, and I have to say that I much prefer these small modern versions to the larger new Transformers, because the hollowness tends to be greatly reduced by the mere fact that they're smaller toys, and don't have as much room for negative spaces. The contrast between negative and positive space is also greatly reduced on the smaller Transformers, because the thickness of the plastic walls is much greater relative to the empty spaces, where as the hollowness is much more noticeable on the larger robots.
I already have a vintage Baroness, but I'm still considering opening this one. Even though the retro o-ring Joe's have a different feel to them, I've found that I've really warmed up to the different feel of the plastic. To me, without so directly referencing the ARAH cartoon, the matte finish of them gives them an animation quality IMO, because the renderings of the cartoon made the characters look matte, so to me there is a distinctive quality to the new figures that I kind of like. I still agree with Rob when he said the new figures don't "feel" like the vintage Joes, but that's something that doesn't really bother me, because I kind of like the animated vibe of them. When I put them next to my vintage Joes, they are close enough for me to blend well... saying that, I'm still buying vintage Joes, because nothing has replaced them... I just picked up the Ferret figure for my DEMON, and another WORMS to fill up my Maggot (I'm excited that I will have all the seats in my Maggot occupied by WORMS!
This has really gotten me excited about Bumble-striker? Not sure when we're calling it these days.

A great video featuring my favorite crossover- GI Joe &Transformers! (Or is that Tfs on GI Joburg?) Seeing it next to Skyquake is awesome! I really hope they do more awesome crossovers (besides Bumblebee), Keep up the excellent work!
I certainly hope this line goes deeper than two bots. I think they’ve struck a great balance between accurate vehicle, substantial bot, but not an overly complex transformation with fiddly, fragile parts. GI Joburg approved!

I do like this. I can't wait until my preorder comes in when it's released. Of course, you're going to have hollow spots ha ha. I'm glad Baroness comes with it. I had her as a kid so it'll be good to have her again. It sucks you found yours way too early ha ha. I like the haslab HISS classified that is being funded and now probably fully funded in record time ha ha. I would love to drop money on it but can't afford it. The additions to it are still great. By the way, 1 pound and 2.2 ounces. LOL

Another solid review, and you may be pleased to know, you pushed me over the edge to buying this Megatron. I do have to qualify it by saying that I bought him secondhand and only Megs himself, no Baroness, but *shrug* he was like $35 USD.
I did buy the Bumblebee AWE Striker directly from Hasbro, because I had a bonus from work, and I figured I owed it to kid me.
My thoughts on Megs:
He part-forms (parts come off and move around) pretty bad, and huge chunks of the HISS hang off him. Also, yeah he’s pretty hollow, but sadly, that’s par for the course for modern Transformers. Also, as you mentioned, a lot of that is also to let him compress down into the tank. As a whole, he’s a chonky bot. You have to take it as a whole, though. Is he a good HISS? He mostly does hide the bot in HISS mode. You can see his chest in the back of the tank, and since the HISS sits so high off the ground, you can see that the treads are clearly his legs. You have to compromise a bit for the bot to match, which I’ll get to in a second.
The partsforming aside, big chunks of tank just hang off the bot, which isn’t great, but this is still undeniably Megatron. He even keeps the pistol grip legs, from an alt-mode he doesn’t even have anymore.
I would say probably the biggest issue I’d say I have personally with him is his fusion cannon.
Megatron’s fusion cannon (his arm gun) is one of his signature elements, and it’s short. 0:03 Most of the time it’s as long or longer than his arm itself. Once again, I get it, it would make no sense to have it on his HISS mode, especially if it looks like a giant scope, and if it hides somehow in the tank, I get that, but man is it underwhelming on his arm.I might have him borrow another Megatron’s.
I’m actually also mildly geeked for Thunder Machine Soundwave, and maybe even MOBAT Optimus.
Side note, if you want some retro goodness and decide to get Soundwave: his Ravage is a redeco of Masterpiece Soundwave, which means, because the Masterpiece tapes are scaled to the OG 80s tapes, that Joe Soundwave can carry the 80s tapes since he’s scaled to fit Ravage.
TREMENDOUS! Thanks for the review Steve! HISS mode looks great, and I love that some of Megatron peaks through on the back; it totally should. Yeah robot mode is definitely hollow but it makes for a great actual toy like you said. Small nitpick: Megatron would never use the universal greeting ;)

Great review, Steve, and Mega-HISS seems decent, all around, despite the empty spaces. The tank mode is excellent and it's fitting that Mega-HISS is heavier than a standard HISS. Baroness's completely unnecessary in-glasses paint in infuriating. No idea why Hasbro just doesn't get it. Still, glad I have one on the way for the sake of Megatron.
The hollowness gets some measure of forgiveness thanks to 1) the transformation. That underside to the forearms actually accommodates the robo-toes, for instance. And 2) they’ve textured the negative space and insides of hollowness with a lot of technical greeblies. An off-brand TF would have left that stuff smooth. But this guy’s busy! It’s a cool aesthetic and I hope Bumblebee shares it.

Ah yes the definitive review...been putting off preordering one of these and I'm still kind of on the fence about it. The eyes on Baroness..yikes, what a huge misstep. As a casual Transformers fan but a huge lover of mecha I think this would be cool to add to the collection. There are some weird design issues IMO like the dangling canopy and the plating you have to snap on to cover up Megatron's head in tank mode, but those feel like sacrifices that needed to be made in order to preserve the intricate design of the HISS so that it works with ARAH-scale figures.
No doubt they'll have more of these in the pipeline after Bumble Bee..I wonder who will be the driver for Optimus Prime? Tollbooth?
I suppose they can’t do Duke again; perhaps Snake Eyes V2?!

Great review my man I'll probably get the bumblebee awe stryker with stalker because it's like ten bucks less on Amazon here in the states but I agree with you modern transformers are really not as good for the most part but modern transformers mainly the war for cybertron trilogy and the new legacy line have pretty good construction for the most part there not that fragile but I don't really buy transformers anymore just specific characters like the earthrise version of The Seekers because of the more realistic jet modes also it will be great and really fun to recreate something like this in the action figure line I'm working on also plan on maybe incorporating something like this into my Recreation of the defiant launch complex but with a regular vintage style defiant though but really great video love your channel and reviews anyways great video my man and hope you and your family are doing great.

@@gijoburg great my man love to hear that also with my figures so far really not going anywhere besides the drawing board but I'm still thinking it out first basically I'm gonna have them as versatile and customizable as marauder gun runners so expect lots of options in colors and decals with plenty of molded details even better than Hasbro's GI Joe like I'm talking about an engine cover that shows the whole engine and panels revealing the aircraft's guns it will take a while but it will well worth it when it's finished also I plan on having strict guarantees like friends and family discount things like that but other than that really love your videos your one of the only GI Joe RUclipsrs I still watch now because not really any of them are that interesting anymore or just annoying I'm sure you get it but anyways love the reviews and glad to hear the family's doing good.
Great review. I'm kind of torn on this, as I always wanted transformers scaled with joes, and the hiss mode looks great, BUT, in robot mode, he only looks good from the front. Soooo much kibble in the back, and the cockpit glass hanging down is just ridiculous... still cool overall, but a bit of a disappointment...
I couldn’t agree more P-V, the back overhang is severe. But all the while I’m trading off in my mind (as I’m sure the designers did). If that back section was made up of multiple folding plates that could be compacted, how many additional sutures would there be to the HiSS mode? At the cost of being a Hasbro apologist, I think I’m on board with what they did here.
I’ve preordered the two tf ho mash ups and I like how they look and interact with the o ring figures.
But they are definitely overpriced for what we get and considering how much easier it is for Hasbro to design and make these toys now.
They want vintage prices for brand new products and that’s yet another slap in the face from the Bro.
Glad to know the figure comes carded. I already have vintage Baroness too so the new one will be used for gun holding and rough play while vintage gets to be pampered.

Yes! I totally neglected to show it but the fusion cannon mounts to the turret on that central hole. It can also go in the side ones but it hits snags when elevating.
And I wasn’t trying to rub it in, but you caught the price sticker I suppose. AU$104 is comparably cheap! The mysteries of pricing continue. The Brits seem to be having the worst of it tho, the prices reflect the US$ number, and not the stronger value of the £! $89.99 is not the same as £89.99! Perhaps it’s settled on after factoring in different shipping costs?
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned yet, didn’t see it in the comments. Isn’t the Megatron arm cannon supposed to fit in that slot on top of the turret? So you have the 2 regular cannons plus his in the middle.
Absolutely. In my excitement I didn’t put it on. But honestly I don’t like it there. It breaks the illusion of this just being a regular HiSS tank too much.

It's not just the painted eyes that look different on Baroness. All sorts has been changed on her head sculpt. Wish you would have opened her to check quality. Lots of ?s on Hasbro's QC this year.
I’m really not on board with these reissue o-rings. If they’re not the same as the originals, I’m not interested. So I’ll probably be getting rid of the the included figures with the Skystriker too. Sorry I couldn’t help you there YellowHell!

@@gijoburg I agree with everything you said about it both good and bad. But I have a concern about the product that may not be a parent to most people. Due to the fact that I have dexterity issues and control issues of my hands I prefer what I buy to be sturdy durable. If it's flimsy and lightweight I won't touch it. Because I'm afraid I'll break it just by handling it. And for that point I've got to wait until I get my own hands on one to see what I think of it. Even if it is sturdy, I will probably pick four Cobra agents to put on it as it's hiss tank form. They will probably be the following for first the baroness given because it comes with it then destro next we'll probably be the silver face plated Cobra Commander the fourth person I'm not so sure yet I'm debating on whether it'll be major bludd or just a hiss tank driver. I'm not sure which yet it will be. If it is the driver he'll always be in the cockpit. Baroness will be in the turret on top. Destro and the Cobra Commander will be on the back.

Hello @@TFN_Araque ! Yes, I had preorders open with Amazon and another fan channel here in Australia, but as luck would have it a chain called JB HiFi had them in stock this week. So I did what any self-respecting fan would do - cancel my preorders and march into the store! It doesn’t happen often that we get things ahead of the US; but it seems to be on the rise lately. The UK got em first, then the channels personally supplied by Hasbro, and now Australia. Weird.

Depends on the figure, but I just tested a HiSS Driver from the most recent modern HiSS release and he’s in comfortably!

As much as I love and collect Transformers I'm not liking these new crossover toys. I preferred the previous attempts where they repaint a Joe vehicle in the deco of the original G1 Toy instead. Glad people are enjoying these new versions, maybe they'll make more.

Because customers say it is acceptable, Hasbro will continue with the absurd hollowness. Why should Hasbro make any changes when customers will still buy the figures anyway?
I felt the same way. Was so against getting this toy. But my curiosity won out and after transforming it to tank mode, those hollow spaces get filled up as this guy compacts himself. The feet go into those forearm hollows! So I’ve got some new found sympathy for the choices here.
@@gijoburg the hollow forearms and weapons are killing it for me, but it's nice to know the arms are hollow for a functional reason. Still, those weapons, especially that arm cannon, are atrocious. Hopefully, there will be 3rd party gap fillers made for them.
