Caleb take your dad up on his offer to explore the world with him. Life will wait and there will come a day when you want nothing more than to spend time with a passed on loved one. Thanks for the great video Capt Topher
Topher Great Video! You are really good at providing very descriptive information and you are creating great excitement for your upcoming adventures! Keep doing what you’re doing your knowledge and passion come across loud and clear Great job! Peace!
Enjoying your videos on here. I have acquired a 28 foot Balboa for free and am recently retired. I live in La Conner and have boated all around the SanJuans for 50 years, plus fished in Alaska aboard purse seiners. I have a 19 foot Glasply and a 28 foot Tollycraft as well. Looking into possibly putting an electric outboard on the Balboa for tooling around the Salish Sea here. But I know nothing or maybe less than nothing about sail boating, so I'm going to have to get some (paid) training on it. I know nothing about the Balboa so am researching and networking it............
Wow! Balboa is a great boat! My family works at Nell Thorn so drop in and say hi to Beck, EmilyAnne, Ben or Kaleb! Good luck with the refit! That’s all part of the fun.
I'm surprised about the issue of tracking. I would have thought the cutaway full keel on these boats would have made them good at tracking. I've loved Norse 27's since they were first introduced, never had the chance to sail one. Looking forward to the San Juan Island footage, I sailed there in the 1970's on a Catalina 22... my first cruise.
Thanks for the video, Great. It is also timely for me, I want to pull my "darned old diesel", but only need/want something to get me in and out of marinas, I will basically treat it as an engineless boat that I can get help from a small motor occasionally.
In my opinion that’s the perfect use for an electric motor at this point. Good luck with the installation! So far I can definitely recommend the electric yacht motor.
Well I don’t have to tell you that the Norsea 27 is narrow (8’) because that one of the design parameters was that it should be “street legal”. Have you thought about dyneema rigging to reduce the boat’s tenderness? It reduces a lot of the weight aloft.
I found your commentary really insightful and educational. But I think ditching the soundtrack might enhance your videos. I’d look to Sam Holmes for inspiration on a sailing vlog. No intro, just footage and chat. I also like Peter Lawless. Neither sailors over produce, and really bring you with them on their journey.
Hi why dont you tie a bungy cord streching port to srarboard with one turn around hand tiller and add or release turns to vary tension you should be able to get the boat to track and save a huge amount of power wheh using auto pilot Also use 5gal drums / jerry cans 3/4 full placed strategically around boat to provide water ballast and shock absorbtion.
Just a thought - I don't think your videos need all the music - I find it distracting when I trying to pay attention to what your saying ! Great information thanks!
Hey, I’m sorry about that. Yeah, I didn’t notice how loud the music was when I was editing this particular video. I think this was in the very beginning of me using music on my videos. There’s a bit of a learning curve. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.
Hi George. I actually think it’s hull shape. I think that the cutaway forefoot and the narrow beam contribute to it. It really is not a concern for me anymore; once I saw how easily any auto pilot steers the boat. I think the trade-off for its maneuverability isn’t actually a bad thing. I’ve been on a lot of full keel boats that are very sluggish but the Nor’Sea 27 is nimble.
Significantly less weight with electric especially if you use lithium phosphate batteries and you eliminate the diesel fuel. Eventually I will replace the diesel tank with a new water tank. Overall I am actually always trying to reduce overall weight on the boat. In 8000 offshore miles since the refit the ballast has been fine.
As I said, in the video, I don’t recommend an electric motor for most people. With the Honda generator, you only need to take small amount gasoline with you. Actually, it’s the same amount as I used to take with me with even when I had a diesel engine. We still used our Honda generator. I don’t think it takes more technology. It’s actually simpler than a diesel engine as far as maintenance and it definitely is simpler.
Just a comment on video editing. I found I couldn't really concentrate on what you were saying with the music in the background. When explaining something technical, I think it much better if you're going to have music accompanying the footage, to have it be just instrumental music, no lyrics /vocals. I find it too much of an overload. Otherwise, an interesting catch up on your install.
Thats the purest honest advice I've hear on Electric motor concise pros n cons!!! good job!!!
Thanks for watching Luis!

I've always loved the look of Lyle Hess's boats especially the Nor'sea 27. This video is great! SUBSCRIBED !!!!!!!
They are beautiful boats! Thanks for subscribing and watching!
That was awesome. Loved the footage and the information was very interesting.
Thanks Caleb!
Nice!! Man I love this. Heavy Mae. That's funny. Can't wait for the other videos. Thanks Kristofer! Thanks Norman!
Thank you Aaron!

Thank you for the encouragement, Matt!

Yeah haha she tracks like a Labrador in a field full of rabbits. Thanks for watching I can’t wait to get her out there!

I was chuckling a little bit at the start with questioning the sailing ability of a Lyle Hess design!
Haha yeah right!!! Amazing little sailor!
“Heavy” Mae…that’s cold brother. But great video anyway.
😂😂😂 well she needs to go on a Keto diet!!

Actually, I have every intention of doing synthetic rigging in the future once I have a little more money lol
😂
Curious how the noise level was with the generator being so close to the cockpit… were you able to enjoy / carton conversations etc?
Just imagine driving a riding lawnmower….🤣🤣 yep that’s it!

What do you atribuite their lack of tracking to? Sail balance?

What is that "sorry" song in your intro?
“I’ll Meet You There” by Ben Phantom. I put a little Easter egg songs in my videos occasionally for my wife.
So you never talked about weight difference
Combustion - electric
Does make a difference for ballast?
Significantly less weight with electric especially if you use lithium phosphate batteries and you eliminate the diesel fuel. Eventually I will replace the diesel tank with a new water tank. Overall I am actually always trying to reduce overall weight on the boat. In 8000 offshore miles since the refit the ballast has been fine.
But the Honda generator requires gas, so what's the benefit? Seems electric boat engines need more technology.

Thanks Alan. I hope I have done better about that since that video. Thanks for the comment and thank you for watching!
Hard to make it through that intro
I’m sorry you didn’t like it. Believe it or not it’s one of my favorites.😃
@@SV-Mig just my 2 cents, please don't take it personally. Fair winds
@@toddlong8672 oh, I don’t! I appreciate any constructive criticism that anybody offers any time. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.
