  • In Week 3 of our 14-week Striper Migration Report videos, Assistant Editor, Matt Haeffner, gets in touch with Joe Albanese of the Hudson River Fisherman's Association, and Kevin Ryan of Tog Candy Jigs, to discuss the current state of the spring migration in and around New York City. Joe covers what the spawning run looks like in the Hudson River this week, as well as the importance of a strong run of river herring and bunker in the Hudson each spring. Then, Kevin Ryan fills us in on the fresh wave of migratory fish outside of New York Harbor, the ideal water temps for fishing flutter spoons around bunker schools, and how to differentiate between resident stripers and migratory fish.
A big push of migratory stripers from 28 to 35 inches made their way into the NY Bight as ocean water temperatures steadily climbed to 50 degrees this week. Meanwhile, in the Long Island Sound, schoolies continue to press north and east toward Block Island Sound, and Chesapeake spawning conditions are approaching their peak with water temps hitting 58 degrees.

I believe a lot of these fish are now entering from offshore of New Jersey, those first satellite tags put in bass proves that by that summer that those fish were off of the Massachusetts Coast on the continental shelf

ThANKS FOR the report ... I am a HRFA member and fish in the Newburgh area and want to point out I believe the regulation change mentioned north of the GW did not sound correct ... this is what Jessica Best from the DEC sent that I received March 27th:
"in the Hudson River north of the GW bridge, NY proposed changing the keeper slot from 18-28” to 23-28”. This was approved by the ASMFC striped bass board on March 26th. DEC will now move forward with emergency regulations to get the new rules in place by May 1st, as required by ASMFC."

The reason the Chesapeake is declining is due to the amount of Menhaden being removed by commercial boats.
