Although, I'm thankful of my upbringing ...this sort of mentor was absent from my existence. As a young child I have memory of family dysfunction, drug abusive fathers, verbal and physical abuse from my mother, yet I'm still here. Thankfully, at 42 I'm able to understand my past and embrace the knowledge of great speakers as Ms. Shabazz and her father's legacy as well as so many other great mentors. Slowly they're molding me to be a stronger black woman and to stand in my truth. To speak with purpose and stay woke to my truth. Thank you for posting, this just adds to my tools of learning and living with knowledge and purpose. My past does not define my future, yet it strengthens it. 👊🏼

“Does that make sense?” This spoke to me because Malcom spoke about making sure to teach in “terms that people could understand.” That is the mark of a truly phenomenal leader. Someone who truly has the hope and spark to do the next right thing for the collective, an interest in the potential for change in all people and a vision for change in the world. She is an amazing person.
