Agreed! I honestly think that if they were to make a line of relatively cheap laptops geared towards kids and teens modeled after the ibooks from that time (which look just like the imac in this video but laptop-shaped) they'd be really popular!

But the trick was that this stopgap ISDN forced the telco to upgrade the local exchange to digital, which made dsl avaliable within a few months, as opposed to staying with tbe analog line, and waiting until they decided to, or decided NOT to, offer dsl by themselves.

Pretty funny! I actually had the same exact green iMac back then, I miss the sound of it when it turns on! Once Facebook came along, it couldn't handle it and I had to say goodbye, but it was time. I know it sounds scary to do, but if you unbend a paperclip, you can push it along one of the sides of the disc drive and there is an internal button that will eject a stuck disc, as good tip, because it happened OFTEN. And as someone who has taken this computer apart completely, I can tell you that there isn't anything that should electrocute you by doing this. And as for the screen being too dark when it got too sunny, part of the shtick of the iMac was that it was one unit with handles and just one cord, so you can move this heavy ass computer anywhere ~~easliy~~ 😒 it's probably why I have back problems now, haha. At least you weren't stuck using the tiny keyboard and unhelpful yoyo style mouse, though it was cute.

@@ktbubster nope 😂 he won’t give up any of the macs he packed into storage going back to 1995. Reason? Tax files, personal documents, and records on hard drives he can’t pull from because it’s TOO expensive to get the parts to fix. Obsolete parts too. Also the iMac? The Disc drive broke, like broke-broke. A disc is still inside it due to me as a teen on accident 🙈
And plus, don’t get excited, these systems run slow in load time. Takes 10-15 mins to wait for the screen to start up before the login comes up. Then you gotta log into your computer. Then another 10 minutes of wait time for the desktop to load.
So nearly 30 mins later it’s ready to go. This is why teachers back then asked you to ALWAYS shut down the systems properly cause ignoring that screws with the load time when you start it back up.

Still think the g3 is a really nice looking computer. If they made a modernized version of it that wasn't god awfully expensive, I would consider buying one.

I think the G3 would have been more usable if the internet did not evolve past it. In the 90s, there was AIM, IRQ for instant messages and IRC for slack style chat rooms. AOL was the primary source of news and media, and myspace from 2003 worked fine.

Ha! I am old enough that I had one of these when it was new and majorly cutting edge tech. We used dialup and used them to put out a newspaper weekly. They crashed a lot even when new. We used Photoshop daily on it. I had an aqua one. We also had Apple computers before iMacs and they were even worse. To really test it, you needed to use dialup and a Zip drive for storage. 😊 ICQ or AIM and IRC were our chat clients. I was only 26 in 1999 when this was made.

Next time, try it with the TenFourFox browser! It's a Mozilla fork that was only just recently discontinued this year, so it's nearly up to date with updates and security fixes. As long as you're running OS X 10.4 Tiger, there is a G3 version for your stunning lime iMac.
TenFourFox will not be fast. At all. However, you can access most modern sites with it, and I've managed to load audio-only RUclips videos with still pictures. Don't expect video calls and meets to work, though. Nothing will make that work on a G3 iMac.
It might make a challenge retry a bit more bearable, using a browser that's far more modern than a looooong-unsupported Safari.
