- Short lecture on how to compute term symbols for an atom.
A ground state atom with a d9 valence configuration would have term symbols of 2D5/2 and 2D3/2.

Term symbol examples 2? More like "Totally terrific videos for me and you!" Thanks again so much for making all of these.
Many thanks, it is very useful.
Thanks Hong!
what if the max values are present but the another term for -1 is lost ?
There is something that i don't get with the part of determining the J values for 2D, since |L-S|
Hi Amine. The extra restriction, which I suppose I didn't clarify, is that every value of J has an integer difference. Thus, we start at the maximum allowed value of J, add it to the set of all possible J values, decrease by 1, and repeat until we have reached the minimum possible value of J. So all J values (and all S values) are either all integers or all *half*-integers.
TMP Chem okay then, i understand, thanks a lot.
Thanks to you I think that I will really be able to pass ! ;)
All we can do is work as hard as we can and perform to the best of our ability on exam day. Luckily, that's almost always good enough.
Hey I know it's been half a decade, but I just came across your comment and was curious. If I might ask, did you pass, and how did your academic career go after that?
why in the top left is ml in lowercase didnt we use the formula -L
The top left m_l is lowercase because it refers to the m_l values of the individual orbitals, whereas the m_L in the darker blue refers to m_L of all electrons. We use the rule -l
In your 1st example video, the maximum S value in that vid was 1 so you said that it can be 0 and 1. In this video where the max S is 1/2, why can't it be 0 and 1/2
Hi Alzar. In this case it can't be zero, because the only allowed values of S are those which are non-negative *and* differ from S_max by an integer. So if S_max = 5/2, the allowed values of S are 5/2, 3/2, and 1/2. In this case, since S_max is 1/2, the only allowed value of S is 1/2, since -1/2 < 0. That's one reason why it was important to include a second example where the spin is a half-integer.
Ohh now I get it. Thanks for clarifying my confusion :)
