But or Rent - The Book of Life - • The Book of Life
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.
I’m currently living in Spain and as I understand it young people want the tradition of bullfighting to be over. Bulls are tortured to make them mad before a fight and the suffer every second of it because it’s not an instant death, they stab them multiple times among other ways of torture. It’s not my place to judge traditions of another country (I’m originally from Argentina), but I do think there’s a lot of people that in current times want this tradition to end
Btw I’m aware this movie is set in Mexico! I just mentioned the bullfighting thing because you were wondering if something like people wanting bullfighting to stop had happened before !
@@thelostcinnamonroll see the thing I don't get is why have bull fighting in this movie, it's Mexico and from what I remember bull fighting is not a tradition there, bull riding is, and bull fighting is Spains tradition, so the director choosing bull fighting for a theme set in Mexico seemed weird to me
@@lisandravazquez6322 Spain is famous for bullfighting but it’s not the only place where it happens.
When colonizers arrived to Latin America they introduced bullfighting to Mexico and other countries (like Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, etc) and that was centuries ago so it’s now part of their tradition as well, I’m guessing there’s people still fighting to stop it since this year bullfighting returned to Mexico after a 2 year ban.
I can’t speak for what people in Mexico think about it, since I don’t know anyone there but I did mention what people in Spain think about it since I’m living here. My guess is tho, that most young people would like that tradition to stop regardless of the country, but I’m not certain of it!
I think bullfighting was included probably to shed light on a subject that not that many people associated with Mexican culture, I for example had no idea about bullfighting being a thing in Mexico before watching this movie!
@@lisandravazquez6322im Mexican, and bullfighting, while not as common as in Spain, is present in Mexican culture and I have even seen it in person once (I was like 5 and did not know it involved killing the bull) it was introduced by the Spanish after colonization, and given that the movie takes place shortly after the Revolución (1910) it is perfectly reasonable for bullfighting to be much more prevalent than it is in modern day Mexico.
Bullfighting is very controversial in Mexico and I’m honestly not informed enough to give you a real answer on the issue beyond the fact that seeing the bulls get stabbed with swords and killed lowkey traumatized me as a child.
@@lisandravazquez6322Mexican living in Spain here.
While it’s not as common in Spain as before, it’s still part of their tradition, but it’s basically dead in Mexico. After colonisation it was pretty common in Mexico as well, but I don’t know why it stopped. Not completely though. Even though I was born and raised in Mexico, I never knew of any events or anything related to it, but I do know some towns still vaguely hold this tradition, but it’s rare to even hear about it. Most people I know in Mexico are completely against it though, but in Spain there’s still a lot of controversy. Mostly between old and younger generations.
This movie holds a dear place to me because the creator also did one of my favorite shows as a kid "El tigre: the adventures of Manny Rivera". You can even see the main characters at the start of the story as background characters.
Have you seen maya and the three (I think that’s the name) It’s by the same creator!
Oh my god you actually listened to me
LMAO THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FELT WHEN I SAW THE NOTIF 😭
your a walking W for suggesting tbol
I highly recommend Maya and the Three, it’s like a prequel to Book of Life. It’s the same creator and writer too.
And Maya and Zatz are reincarnations of María and Manolo. La Muerte is sisters with Lady Michte and Lord Michelan is brothers with Xibalba.
Is that on Netflix?
@@bhavanijayant526 yes
@@itslilyquinn Ok cool I’ll check it out
I honestly love this movie a lot more than Coco. It was a rough time for me and my family when this movie came out. 5 living a in a single at that time. And watching this movie made my sad heart remember to be humble and to play from the heart no matter what.
Ya this came out before coco it’s such a great film
This movie was apparently made by the same people who made the Cartoon El Tigre and I don't know how I didn't make that connection because it matches so well from the character designs, to the look, to the vibe and everything it's a blast
God I love that show but ya I new I seen this type of characters before
"Mijo" comes from "Mi hijo", literally translates as "My son". It's like an abbreviation. JV! So good that you gave the oportunity to this movie. This one is so underrated. Thanks for the reaction!
I am so happy more people are recognizing this movie!!! I love this movie so much as a kid!!! This movie always was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Manolo definitely raised the standards for me as a kid 😂
I also loved Joaquin and Manolo’s friendship. Even though they were fighting over a girl you can tell they still care for each other and Maria as friends. Truly one of my favorites movies that will forever hold a special place in my heart 💜💜💜
I love this movie so underrated it should be at least as popular as Coco
Totally agree
"Are they shinigami, like on Death Note?" Well, kinda. "That's very strange pushing your daughter on some guy" it's even more strange when you remember what he said about Joaquin being like the son he never had, am I the only one who thinks that's a weird sentence for someone to say when talking about a significant other of their son or daughter? This is such an underrated movie! ❤️ Great reaction!
I don't think that's too weird to say. if it is their child's partner, then it is technically their child-in-law being "the son/daughter they never had"
If you want to learn more on the characters and their backgrounds check out their wiki
You also have to watch Maya and the 3,it's made by the same studio and director and art style and trust me the story and characters are very well done and tearjerking especially the ending!
It’s actually been confirmed that maya and zatz are manolo and Maria so manolo and Maria are reincarnations of them!
IM SO GLAD YOU FINALLY WATCHED THIS MOVIE!!! Its one of my faves
