Many years ago I had a spider bite on my right knee. Burning, stabbing pain and the thing not only would not heal, it kept growing into a red, raw ulcer nearly 3 inches across. . Tried everything and when my dr suggested a broad spectrum antibiotic, I used calendula oil instead. The pain was gone in 24 hrs. It took awhile, but each day was a little better and it healed with no scarring.
Such wonderful information,I grew up in Germany Southern Bavaria and in the summers I lived at my grandmothers house located in a meadow next to the farmers and fresh milk, one thing she did as what I call a pioneer woman I’m presently 70 was make her own salves and Cremes from fresh herbs that she grew in her garden...a single parent left with six children in her late 30s she had to learn from the land and care of those children...I wish we would get back to that way of life and I believe inadvertently that is where we are heading ...self sufficiency is rewarding challenging and so wonderful in the whole of it...calendula salve is what she used to ease all of the bee stings from the meadow as I wandered barefoot...thank you for your wonderful channel and being so giving with information...with hope this year I will retire creating that rose garden I always wanted as well as the nutrition from my own garden, stay blessed
Wow I'm an herbalist, had no idea!!! I recently began my own RUclips channel on homesteading, herbs, etc and your videos are very inspiring!!! Excellent info !! Mother nature's remedies are best!! Pharma drugs almost killed me while treating my autominnune illnesses.
Thanks for this! I had wondered why my calendula is so sticky when picking it! I need to go ahead and make some cream. I've been dealing with cracked skin on my fingers from all the farmwork, no matter how much water I drink!

TennesseeGirl Hey TennesseeGirl! Whereabouts are you in TN? I’m in Nashville! I started growing calendula and nasturtiums this year for the first time. My calendula just started blooming - I have two plants, one is doing great and the one right next to it not so much :(. The nasturtiums are doing fantastic and I am really enjoying them.
Hi Heidi, I love these chats from your deck garden. Thank you so much for the wonderful info about calendula. I really want to do more with calendula. I want to make the tea as you advise. Looking forward to your top 10!! I’m definitely going to look into growing calendula here since it sounds like it is easy to grow. As always, thanks for all the wonderful info you share!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
I think it would do well for you, it seems to do fine not being watered daily once it is established, it may need daily watering though while it is very small or if just being transplanted.
Thanks to you I now have a magnificent salve/cream that my family and I use daily and even my grandchildren want to medicine that grandma made! I use it for everything! I have also order a number of the books that you have recommended and those too I use daily, SO thank you!

I couldn't find calendula seeds by themselves around my town either. I just happened to look on the back of a packet of a wildflower seed mix where it lists all the different seeds and there it was! For calendula it is typically the flowers, as should have been noted in this old video. I do have videos where I talk about making teas and some showing how I use the calendula flowers along with other herbs to make an infused oil for skin creams, though you can use the calendula alone. Here is the most recent: ruclips.net/video/ZE3it47z1OQ/видео.html
Issues can be for various reasons. A lot of people don’t realize that there’s a fermentation process to to excessive amounts of sugar, which is part of what I have with inflamed gut So I don’t imagine that that would be helpful other than the fact that eventually the calendula would clean up the excessive fungus and you would see less problems overtime of regular use and it would probably also repair your issues with permeability like IBS or Crohn’s or diverticulosis But I don’t think it will be a quick remedy. It’s definitely something you would have to be persistent about.
Question: I am going to be having major dental surgery and wondering if I can use this as a mouth rinse? I ordered a tincture of it from mountain rose herbs and wondering how to use it. Do I add it to a bit of water to swish? Don't dilute? Will it burn open wounds in the mouth? Do I swallow it or spit it out? I appreciate your advice. Thank you.
If you are rinsing with it, you should spit it out and while I have never used a tincture in that way, it may be best to mix with a little water, at least at first as it will sting
Thank you so much for your reply. Do you think it could infect or irritate the raw gums? I will have stitches for the first 2 weeks. I know I will be on an antibiotic for a few days, do you think it will be a problem to use while on the antibiotic? Maybe I should begin after day 3 to let things settle. I am trying to figure out what all I can do naturally to speed up healing and help with pain. I am going to try to use arnica for pain. If you have any suggestions, I would hugely appreciate it. It's a pretty huge surgery and I am really scared. I have lots of Manuka honey if you think that's a good idea. Thank you again; I appreciate you.@@RainCountryHomestead
I have a question if you don’t mind my ureter is starting to block The doctor wants to put in a stent would this be a good tea to try or can you think of a better one?
I'm no expert, but I had my ureturs reimplanted at the age of 2 and have battled with all sorts of issues including stones. Chanca Piedra has helped significantly with that. Cranberry is always good too. Look into Chanca Piedra. Best of luck!
I love calendula, but calendula dosen't love me. 😣 I've been trying for three years to grow them without any success, the leaves get white spots (not mildew) and I get 3 or 4 flowers from each plant, then the leaves start turning brown and die. I live in the northeast. Any tips? Wonderful video.
Not sure what to tell you there. Do you pick the flowers as soon as they bloom? If you are not doing that, then you should try, it may help increase the production and help them hang on longer.
I boght calendula at local health store and made a refreshing strawberry calendula water. Id love to grow my own. Any suggestions on where ti order seeds?
I am currently selling some on our store. It is a blend of our own and those from my Father-in-law down in California but all organic: etsy.com/shop/raincountryhomestead
The center can be used too, when I add to salads, breads, and such, I use only the petals but when making tea or vinegar, I use the whole flower. The leaves and stems cannot be used though
They are related but not the same. Calendula is often referred to as pot marigold. Their leaves are very different from each other as are the flowers and the smell
@@RainCountryHomestead so marigold can not be consume??? Lol I got some marigold and in the process of drying it and I was like oops not the same. So just wanna make sure
@@downavxyooj Yes, it can and has its own benefits but the flavor may not be as good as calendula. I cannot remember if you can use the leaves on marigold though, I know you cannot on calendula so I recommend you look that up before trying to use them in teas or salves
Thank you Heidi, for the information on Calendula; I was wondering if when they are talking diabetes, on meds, is it saying insulin injections or pill form?
I would assume it would mean either. Many times medicinal herbs and medications of any kind do not mix. In some cases it can mean that the herb will diminish the the potency of the medication and in other cases it can cause serious side effects. One would need to look into the specifics for each thing
I know there are some similar benefits to the calendula but from what I understand they are not as many and I believe you do have to use more caution when dealing with the common garden marigold (AKA French Marigold or Marigold Tagetes
Look at the book Conceiving Healthy Babies, it gives most detailed description of what herbs in what amounts are safe while trying to conceive, in different stages of pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. I think that book should have a different title as many women who are already pregnant or with a baby would just skip it.
Heidi, do sell your calendula seed? I grew some this year, starting from seed and they died when I put out into my garden. I have a few plants that have hung on but they are limp and just not growing. I have had great success with most everything else I grow but I am at a loss with this. Can you help? I do want to regrow next year but need some more seed.
Yes, I do sell them, I sell it mixed with all colors and sizes blended together. I will be putting more seed up on my store in the fall. Sometimes calendula does better when direct seeded in late spring or even early summer. It really depends on your area
Just an fyi, my calendula tend to self seed, that works best for me. Even the selfseeded ones I transplant don't do great. All the ones I have in pots don't do well at all. 😕
Though mine will self seed, the ones I start in the green house then transplant often are farther ahead. They tend to droop a bit when first transplanted but then once they are established, they do quite well. All my pink ones were started in the greenhouse and the one in the main garden bed is doing amazingly well. The ones in pots are doing decent though not quite as good. On the other hand, I have some of other colors transplanted into the main garden that are struggling while some transplanted into pots are going berserk. THEN the ones that I direct seeded in the front garden - some are huge and others still have yet to give me flowers. It seems one can never be sure just how they will behave
A lot of good information, however, (although nicknamed the pot marigold) calendula is not a member of the Merigold family. It is a completely different species. Marigolds can be toxic. Not to be confused😓
Do u know if Crackerjack Marigolds can be used the same way as Calendula? I have tons of them & they are all organic so would love to be able to harvest them before we get a hard frost & snow which I am dreading. Thank you

In some cases it can mean that the herb will diminish the the potency of the medication and in other cases it can cause serious side effects. One would need to look into the specifics for each thing
Thank you Heidi, I will research more about Calendula, to see what could happen. Thank you so much you sure had some good information that you shared.
Hello...would this flower also be good for psoriasis?
It is said to be good for psoriasis, yes
@@RainCountryHomestead Thank you, I appreciate your answer to my question!.
Do you have any thing on geraium flower
Sorry for that last reply, that was meant for another comment, not sure how it ended up on yours. Anyway, no, I do not have a video on geranium
I was always told the marigold was poisonous. What medicinal benefits are the from marigold?
I know there are some similar benefits to the calendula but from what I understand they are not as many and I believe you do have to use more caution when dealing with the common garden marigold (AKA French Marigold or Marigold Tagetes
Is it safe to ingest while breastfeeding?
I did a little looking and could not find anything specific to breastfeeding other than using it topically as a healing cream.
Look at the book Conceiving Healthy Babies, it gives most detailed description of what herbs in what amounts are safe while trying to conceive, in different stages of pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. I think that book should have a different title as many women who are already pregnant or with a baby would just skip it.
Thanks for telling me about this book! I looked into it and I'm am definitely hooked it is next on my list of herb books to buy!
Rain Country good to know, thanks
When you do I would like to get some from you! I will have to keep an eye out! Thanks so much!
Hi, we make “spinach” pies with the leaves, but does anyone know if the calendula stems are edible please?
No, only the flowers. The leaves should not be eaten either. At least that was what i had read years ago
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you Heidi. I was going to ask if the leaves could be used.
A lot of good information, however, (although nicknamed the pot marigold) calendula is not a member of the Merigold family. It is a completely different species. Marigolds can be toxic. Not to be confused😓
They are related but not the same thing and I know this

It says her channel (Delectable Mountains Homestead) doesn’t have any content…hmmm?
Yes, this video is a kind of old and Shedelle took her channel down since.
Do u know if Crackerjack Marigolds can be used the same way as Calendula?
I have tons of them & they are all organic so would love to be able to harvest them before we get a hard frost & snow which I am dreading. Thank you
Marigolds have similar benefits as calendula since they are very closely related
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Valerian root is abortive. In the islands pregnant women can't drink that tea ect.
I can identify with that! 😆
