I've seen most content on youtube about camera angles, composition etc. But your content are far beyond anything I've watched. You are working on such a high level in this industry. Big props mate!
Thank you for these gimbal tips. I must say though, all your clips look amazing! Off subject, the lenses used in this video are the 24-70mm gm, zeiss 35mm, what else do you use?
Thanks bro, super grateful for your support! The only other lenses used in these clips were the 70-200 on the Ostrich Tracking shot and the Horse Tracking Shot :)
Have been filming for almost 2 years and using gimbal, I never learnt about what movement to use when, and I'm not so satisfied with my gimbal using experience. This video appeared and now after watching I can say I'm sure it will help me a lot. Thanks

Excellent video! And I agree, using thoughtful camera movements do enhance the story telling! Now I can be more mindful when I'm storyboarding 😉. Would be amazing if you could also share your pre-production stage, like storyboarding, location scout, etc 😊
I'm so happy I stumbled onto your channel. Between this, the Intent video, and the Contrast video I've never felt more in tune, capable, and powerful as a cinematographer. Weird way to describe the feeling I guess, but as a fellow Saffa it's encouraging hearing such useful, honest information in your own accent haha.
@@jacques_crafford You deserve it man. Really hope you'll continue this great way to offer valuable contents over all of the paid biased sponsored videos out there. Thanks! 🙏🏻
2:12 I think the reasoning for this is when you orbit the opposite direction, you’re showing where they “started” and end on where they’re looking, as opposed to spoiling the “reveal” by starting the shot with where they will be looking, except the viewer has already seen it so it’s not as exciting or doesn’t feel meaningful. I hope that makes sense. Just a quick observation!
Yeah it's true but in general opposite movement looks pleasing, for example when I'm tracking a walking subject and other subjects pass by in the opposite direction it just looks good :)
@@jacques_crafford And thanks for your reply! Haha I actually liked what I learned so much I'm going to make my next YT video about experimenting with these methods. I've been trying to build my skills as a videographer so little tips like this helps a lot.
Great stuff man, fantastic cinematic shots for a compact crew. Just wondering, I don't see much focus pulls. Do you dial in your wide shots at F12 and above?
Thanks David! I use a combination of Autofocus and Manual Focus. In many cases, Autofocus on the Sony A7sIII works great but some scenarios are too complex so then I switch to manual and try to keep to the same distance.
Jacques, you produce some amazing content, really outstanding work! One thing I wanted to ask is what kind of side handle you use on your rig for those handheld shots with the A7 IV? I like how this gives you the ability to reach the touchscreen with your thumb without removing a point of contact. Love to hear from you!
Hi Nando, thanks bro! Apologies for the late reply, YT flagged your comment into spam and I only saw it now. The handle you're referring to is the Cinevate Articulating Arm, unfortunately they don't make them anymore :(
Once again great video! Just one question I have on my mind: When recording at 24/25 fps - do you raise your shutter and break the 180 degree rule in order to get rid of unwanted jitter/motion blur when being close to your subject and there is a lot of movement?
Thanks so much! I prefer not to break the 180 rule for anything which some filmmakers might disagree with but I love the natural blur even when I'm up close.
I just really appreciate your videos. It gives value to the community unlike the other youtubers who teaches but no real life application and no experience. You the best 🔥
