    Wow! Quilting has certainly changed since our grandmothers' day. I guess I'm just 'old school'. I still enjoy pieced quilting by hand on a quilting rack, and I'm making two rag quilts right now and snipping by hand. And, I LOVE it. The detail and creativity of hand quilting is the part that I find relaxing. I see today's quilts completely different. Today, with everything done by machine, it takes the individual creativity and heart away from it.

      I love the hand sewn quilts and watched my grandma sew many a quilt in her living room. I don’t have the time or space to for a rack. Sewing in general is becoming a lot art so I think we should encourage it no matter what style is being used.

    The curvy seam all around is a nice touch rather than a straight plain seam. I like it. I just watched another one of your videos, but you forgot to mention about sewing all around the quilt. Probably an oversight. Very cute rag quilt, thank you.

    You have the janome that I loved. I see it on the bottom of your shelf. I traded it in and pretty much stopped sewing. That was 10 years ago. Just got another janome because mine flooded in Helene. I can’t wait to start again.

    • @suebean3873
      @suebean3873 2 года назад

      No, don’t catch the edge of the batting cuz you don’t want it showing in the raggedy seam, not pretty. That is the reason for the X in the middle is to catch the binding that way, no need for the sides.

  • @southernbellblessed2402

      It can, depending on how large your batting square is and how large your seam is. When you sew the X to quilt the square, it holds the batting in perfectly so you don’t need to worry about catching the binding on the sides. 😊

    • @TheCraftyAuthor

    • @suebean3873
      @suebean3873 2 года назад

      Or you can make 3 blocks and no batting. I’ve done that and the ragging is much fuller and very nice effect. So you sandwich flannel or whatever fabric you want in the middle, same size as top and bottom. No need to put batting in a quilt with 3 layers.

  • @lubirosen6738

    Why are you using fabric under the foot before you start sawing?

    • @suebean3873
      @suebean3873 7 месяцев назад

      So that the machine doesn’t bunch up the thread and make a nest of thread. You use the little pce of fabric to start on it and also at the end of your seam, then it’s ready for the next pce, and you keep going to the back and cut that one to use again in front. I never remember what you call these, something like enders. My machine bunches up when it starts sewing as many many machines do and it’s ugly. This works wonders on it.

      @TheCraftyAuthor  4 года назад

      Thank you for clarifying. You would cut the squares whatever the desired size is. You would then sew the blocks together, with the wrong sides facing each other. Use about 1/2" seam allowance. Once you have all of the blocks sewn together, then you take snip scissors and create the fringing. I will link to the type of scissors that I have used the past. I will also link a video showing how I snip the fringe. I don't currently have a tutorial on how to cut the squares and fringe. I do believe there are several on RUclips though and they can be quite helpful.

    I love this quilt and your instructions were great. Like another follower, I wondered if you try to catch the batting in the seam when you stitch the square together or is the X stitching enough to hold the batting in place? Also, if you mix minky with cotton or flannel, do you have to wash (and shrink) the cotton & flannel before starting since the minky doesn't shrink? Thanks!!

      Joan- I have made several rag quilts with minky, cotton and flannel and I don’t wash my fabric before sewing. I do however, wash it after it’s all sewn together. The batting is secured with an X during the quilting process and when I am putting the squares together. I also cut my batting smaller than the squares so that I don’t have it in the seams when putting the whole quilt together as to reduce bulk. I hope that makes sense. I don’t find that I have much shrinkage with waiting to wash after the quilt is complete. 😊 Happy quilting!

    Hi Anisa. I was wondering did you cut your batting with accuquilt die

    • @TheCraftyAuthor
      @TheCraftyAuthor  4 года назад

      Hi Josie- At this time, I still cut my batting with a rotary cutter and ruler. I have cut batting with my AccuQuilt and it works fine. You will just need to clean the lint from your blades when you’re done. :)

    Hi Anisa, I loved watching you on the cut out and assembly of this adorable quilt. I don't have a Accuquilt Big Machine for the squares but I wanted to ask a question when cutting by rotary. What roll does the corners being cut out serve and is it something I should do to my squares before assembling them? I have seen some tutorials without corners cut out and wondered what the necessity of this is?

    • @TheCraftyAuthor
      @TheCraftyAuthor  4 года назад +1

      It really is a personal preference, I do believe. You do not have to cut the corners out if you don’t want to. It just gives it a cleaner look and makes the fringing around the corner a bit easier. When o cut by hand, I usually do all of the cutting at the end. 😊
