I usually prefer written instructions; however, the ones I read for this type of quilt left me with some questions. I am not accustomed to quilting this way, but two of my daughters really adore these and made me want to learn. I had no questions about how to complete my projects after watching this. I bought someone's Project from the thrift store and I am going to Finish it 💞 the fabric was all puppies and kittens and my 5 year old fell in love with the color palette! It's a Rag style so I was researching to see if I could assemble it and what steps to take. We did several squares of applique! My 5yr old daughter is learning to sew! I can't wait to have it all done up !

This is the best rag quilt instruction tutorial I've yet to come by! Detailed but presented well and held my attention. (Sometimes people are so boring, I stop the video)
I tried making a baby quilt this way. I am a beginning quilter. I just couldnt find a nursury set that would match the theme i wanted for my baby's room. It turned out alright...for a beginner but I am sort of a perfectionest. I redid this using flannel instead of the fleece inside because it was thinner and easier for my sewing machine to go through and it comes in just as many colors. I used fleece for the backing because it is soft and warm but i left it as a whole piece and used a permenant fabric adhesive through the center of the fleece so it would stick in place while I sewed the edges. I had such a hard time trying to sew the X into each square so I just used smaller squares. I used cotton prints for the top. They had lines or some sort of pattern to follow so it made it easier than trying to get an X to act right. After finishing this version of the rag quilt it was perfect!!! Thank you for showing me this really cool idea I also mad a matching rag curtain without the iside lining and used room darkening fabric for the back. That turned out great as well. My first baby's room will be breath taking because of awesome tutorials like this one.

I am very very new to quilting. I RUclipsd quilting 101 and you popped up. I have watched almost all of your quilting videos. My first quilt ever was a rag quilt inspired by yours. I've made a rag quilt before that turned out nice. I used colonial type fabric, so it gave it an old feel. This time I'm doing a baby quilt with flannel, using the squares to match on each side. Thank you for this step-by-step tutorial. It helped jog my memory! I love the way yours turned out! Awesome choice of colors and fabrics! God Bless!
Add a pin vertically in the same direction of the nap and pattern so you don't have to check each square. The other 3 pins would be pinned horizontally. Keep the vertical pin in place when sewing the X.
As of now I have 16 (who knows how many next year🤣) but who can afford all these guys. Well this year I made them pillow cases (out of various cute fabrics). Here in 2024 I'm about to make my very first rag quilt, I've wanted to make one for years but between job, crochet, and weaving, who has time. Now I'm MAKING time, using quilt fabric my mother left behind. I made a hand-stitched quilt before, but it got kind of wonky and I never finished it, it's still stuffed in a bag in my room. But this tutorial is quick, no extra annoying chatter, very concise and instructional. Great tutorial. (acrost is not a word, I had to say it).

I made one of these quilts with flannel scraps of all the pajama pants and pillow shams I have sewn for my 10-year-old grandson. One square I used the print on fabric for his name, my name, and the year. He just loves the quilt and can hardly wait for cold weather.

Love hearing the sound of your machine. It very much resembles the machine on which I learned to sew in the 1960's. I'm not so sure any of the electronic machines of today would still be running this many years later!
Here it is 2 years later, but I wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed how you made the instructions slow and easy. Too many ladies on videos say the quilt instructions too quickly, so I have to go back and back all the way through it. I'm sure they aren't aware of it though... I can't wait to make my first quilt! I was suprised when I saw your sewing maching....it looks just like my Momma's. She passed away ten years ago, but when I saw your machine, IDK it made me cry a little. I hadn't seen her machine in a long time and when I saw yours.....Well, anyway, I am wanting to get me a machine soon, I want to make one of these quilts. I wanted to make one just like yours, but the lady at the fabric store said they did not have any great fabric for light pink. She recommended flannel - picked out a print (elephants and animals in pink, turquoise, gray) and bright pink, turquoise, gray, and medium pink for the back - with white flannel instead of batting. It ragged beautifully - and I am very happy with it. I think my granddaughter will love it. Thanks for the instructions!

I’m pretty excited. I ordered some cuddle fabric from Amazon, had an absolute blast picking out all the patterns and colors for my first one. The fabric arrived today (almost all of it), and now I’m waiting on a walking foot. This one will be for my oldest granddaughter, but first I’ve got to make my very first project - a pillowcase dress - for another granddaughter. Loving this sewing stuff. It’s much faster than knitting!

have been sewing for a lot of years.......then i DIDN'T sew for a lot of years. got a new sewing machine as the other was 44 years old!!! and i wanted to quilt so bad!! i just wasn't getting anywhere with it. wanted to make a quilt for each of the two grandkids. i saw this rag quilt and thought "hmmmmmmm i can do that!!" so i am in the process of doing so. i LOVE your tutorial, erica. was so easy and explained things so well. this first quilt is going to be star wars! lol. hopefully it turns out ok.
I used flannel for the front and back and no batting. I like it because it's not so heavy. Also when stitching the X I used some of my designer stitches with variegated threads.

I just did it! thanks sooo much for making it easy and explaining every detail for me. Im 3/4 of the way done now, just have to finsh stitching all the rows together, and a stitch around the outside, cutting the strips with the scissors, and Im done! I used flannel on the front squares and minky on the back, a solid color. your awesome!!

I love your tutorial. I have made a few rag quilts before. The clipping is really the most tedious part for me. My 6 square x 7 square quilt took 1 hour and 51 minutes to snip while watching / listening to Sunday afternoon football.
I have had fleece 10” squares for some time now and this is the quilt to make! Like how thorough you were and also tip about the nap going in one direction was great. Thanks Erica.
Hi Karen, I too had some fleece but I used it in the middle of my 10 " quilt squares,...i am just starting to sew it, Do you think having the fleece in the middle of 2 flannel squares will look bad? I am making it for my Grandson. Help :)

Great, hope you enjoy it! Rag Quilts are really easy to put together and quite forgiving since your blocks don't have to be absolutely perfect! :) Have fun!
Thank you! Good tips! I make the batting 1 1/2" shorter so it does not show on the edges. I like the 3/4" seam the best as well. If you put 2 rows one one side and 2 rows on the other side and work towards the center to join them, it is not as heavy. It is easier if it has a lot of rows.
Heidi, You can really use whatever you like for rag quilts. I chose soft fabrics based on what my daughter wanted. It's a mix of quilting cotton, flannel, and minky squares, with fleece in the middle for batting. And the backs are minky as well. I think you can use whatever you want ;)
Erica Arndt what batting would you want for a rag quilt that is not over heavy but well keep you warm. Not sure. Going to learn to make a rag quilt. . I can sew a tad and have a machine.

I made one out of batiks too. Looked fabulous! Also, can make a double sided quilt so it is completely different on the back. It takes some planning and a design board.

Snip as you go is my recommendation. After every two rows. It saves your hand. LOVE those Fiskars Spring Loaded Scissors. That is what I use also.

Staggering the seams, assembling the rows like bricks, is more interesting and avoids having to sew through all that bulk.

i have never attempted a quilting project. you made this look so easy. i'm anxious to get my fabric to start on my very own rag quilt!
I wanted to make one just like yours, but the lady at the fabric store said they did not have any great fabric for light pink. She recommended flannel - picked out a print (elephants and animals in pink, turquoise, gray) and bright pink, turquoise, gray, and medium pink for the back - with white flannel instead of batting. It ragged beautifully - and I am very happy with it. I think my granddaughter will love it. Thanks for the instructions!

This rag quilt is a great one to start with, it's really easy and forgiving if you make mistakes :)

I’m pretty excited. I ordered some cuddle fabric from Amazon, had an absolute blast picking out all the patterns and colors for my first one. The fabric arrived today (almost all of it), and now I’m waiting on a walking foot. This one will be for my oldest granddaughter, but first I’ve got to make my very first project - a pillowcase dress - for another granddaughter. Loving this sewing stuff. It’s much faster than knitting!

have been sewing for a lot of years.......then i DIDN'T sew for a lot of years. got a new sewing machine as the other was 44 years old!!! and i wanted to quilt so bad!! i just wasn't getting anywhere with it. wanted to make a quilt for each of the two grandkids. i saw this rag quilt and thought "hmmmmmmm i can do that!!" so i am in the process of doing so. i LOVE your tutorial, erica. was so easy and explained things so well. this first quilt is going to be star wars! lol. hopefully it turns out ok.

I used flannel for the front and back and no batting. I like it because it's not so heavy. Also when stitching the X I used some of my designer stitches with variegated threads.

I just did it! thanks sooo much for making it easy and explaining every detail for me. Im 3/4 of the way done now, just have to finsh stitching all the rows together, and a stitch around the outside, cutting the strips with the scissors, and Im done! I used flannel on the front squares and minky on the back, a solid color. your awesome!!

I love your tutorial. I have made a few rag quilts before. The clipping is really the most tedious part for me. My 6 square x 7 square quilt took 1 hour and 51 minutes to snip while watching / listening to Sunday afternoon football.
Laying my fabric squares on the floor would be a fabulous new PLAYGROUND for my two cats 🐱! Lololol
I have had fleece 10” squares for some time now and this is the quilt to make! Like how thorough you were and also tip about the nap going in one direction was great. Thanks Erica.
Hi Karen, I too had some fleece but I used it in the middle of my 10 " quilt squares,...i am just starting to sew it, Do you think having the fleece in the middle of 2 flannel squares will look bad? I am making it for my Grandson. Help :)

Great, hope you enjoy it! Rag Quilts are really easy to put together and quite forgiving since your blocks don't have to be absolutely perfect! :) Have fun!
Thank you! Good tips! I make the batting 1 1/2" shorter so it does not show on the edges. I like the 3/4" seam the best as well. If you put 2 rows one one side and 2 rows on the other side and work towards the center to join them, it is not as heavy. It is easier if it has a lot of rows.
Heidi, You can really use whatever you like for rag quilts. I chose soft fabrics based on what my daughter wanted. It's a mix of quilting cotton, flannel, and minky squares, with fleece in the middle for batting. And the backs are minky as well. I think you can use whatever you want ;)

Erica Arndt what batting would you want for a rag quilt that is not over heavy but well keep you warm. Not sure. Going to learn to make a rag quilt. . I can sew a tad and have a machine.

I made one out of batiks too. Looked fabulous! Also, can make a double sided quilt so it is completely different on the back. It takes some planning and a design board.
Erica, I have known how to make these but never have. You inspire me to get going. I have lots of flannel fabrics that can be used for this.
The older sewing machines hold up.I used to have one like you are using.You give nice clear inatructions.
