I have the 45 record of this song and I absolutely love it.Gary Stewart is one of the best singers in the history of country music and I will miss him forever.RIP Gary.I love you my friend!!!
@@TheBrooklynbodine Hi Gary! I think I can help you out with your question...On the week of April 28, 1984, this fine tune peaked at a much-too-low #74 on the Billboard Magazine's Hot Country Singles Chart... Hope that helps a little, and take care! Ms. Elizabeth 🤣📻🎧🤣📻
It's a bottle of whiskey time. Love Gray Stewart wish I could have seen him in person. The best they was and the best they will ever be. Love Dean Dillon to. They were both great.
Thats what ya call Singing from the HEART PAPPA "WOW" ya know there's them few that when you hear them without a doubt you know who it is he's for sure one of them that we probly won't never get anything like him ever again but Truely one of the Greatest in his time
What a surprise! I heard this on KGAK radio Station in Gallup / Farmington NM. Looked and looked.in records stores, nothing! was sad to me! But thank after so many years. Finally it's here. Thanks again!
This song was written by Don Singleton. He also wrote Fool For Your Love which was a number one hit for Mickey Gilley. I recorded three of his songs back in the 80s. Warner Brothers wanted me to do an "album" but I didn't have the money to produce 7 more songs. True story.
Dirk Fontenot I never got a record deal so all I have is a cassette tape. I may have them put on CD then see if I can post them on here. I'd make sure Don gets writer's credit. I'm not even sure how this stuff works.
This is a great video and I greatly appreciate that someone uploaded this great song by Gary. I just have one problem with it...if you listen carefully the record player that it was recorded on is speeding up and slowing down. I was listening in the car and it's wobbly. I'm going to have to try and track down this single so I can play it on my record player. But if not for you, I never would have heard it so thanks so much!
I found the single on vinyl and can prob re-upload at some point. But there's something otherworldly about that warble which I strangely prefer to my 45!
Here's what I came up with. I'm not sure about the third line in the second verse. Here we are again tonight at our corner table. The girl behind the bar just dimmed the lights. The juke box plays an old country love song. I'm holding on to you with all my might. Chorus Hey, bottle of whiskey. She's long since been gone. Her memory's just the kind that tends to linger on. You try to chase it off but here it comes again. Hey, bottle of whiskey. I thought you were my friend. Now I'm holding on to you the way I held her. And you're face to face with sadness in my eyes. I see I'm singing to an empty bottle. Like the emptiness she left me deep inside. Repeat Chorus

Dirk Fontenot I figured out the second line in the second verse right before I read your post. I'm going to learn this song and maybe do it at some open mic nights. I really think this is one of the best songs Don ever wrote. I like it more than Fool For Your Love. But since that made #1, what the hell do I know? ha!
sixtiesmusiconly I totally and utterly agree. And it's my favorite Gary tune as well. I have the chords written around here somewhere, if you wanna copy. Also, I recorded several things myself. Check out my playlist, under Dirk Songs and HOWL (my old band). Thanks.
Dirk, can you post the lyrics? I can't understand all of them. This song should have been a hit. I wonder why Gary didn't include it on his High Tone album.
i haven't. i've heard that there are some legendary demos and b-sides, but i wouldn't even know where to begin to look for em. there are rumored to be some alternate versions of songs out there that are way better than the studio cuts.
@littlegobbler Please, please, please....if you find evidence of this 45 anywhere, let me know. I got the mp3 version of this from someone, but I'm desperate to find a vinyl copy of this. Also: any idea if Gary actually wrote this, or is this a cover? Thx!
Gary Stewart had more soul and talent than all of Nashville combined!! A true legend!!

jim, no truer words were spoken, my friend. Evan Williams and this? Yes, please
And me!!
Just picked up my true love from work in my Porsche. Currently relaxing with some whiskey. Love you Gary 🖤
One of the best song Gray Stewart sung, which Gray Stewart never sung a bad song. Love his music so much.
You are 1000% correct!
It's from a small label called Red Ash, between his stints at RCA and Hightone. It was a single only. The 45 was numbered 8403. I hope that helps.

@@stacynewsom5888 none! It was issued as a single (45). But someone needs to put it on one!
Why is there a minute of nothing on this video? The volume is great but that blank is annoying! Can we get a fix?

What was the B-side of this single-only?
"Roadhouse Romances." On the Red Ash label
