I couldn't find any youtube videos of "Gary Stewart Okeechobee Purple" from the album Cactus and a Rose so I put this slide show together. It's one of my favorites.
Okeechobee purple was from Lakeport Florida, nothing sweeter than sliding across the big O with a bag of Okeechobee purple. Thanks Gary for all the great memories ,, I love you ole buddy , Rest easy Gary , We will see you soon brother .
Uncle Gary turned Willie onto Okeechobee Purp back in the Mid 70’s they did a few shows together back then out west, Willie still says It’s one of his favorites.
I knew Gary's son Joey and his cousins,,lots of party's back in those days in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce,,,,I miss those days,,real Florida that is gone now,,,,

Hi Johnny,,I do not know those folks from that area,,I had went to Gary's house a few times in Ft Pierce,I do not remember exactly where it was,,I was just 15 back then,Gary's son Joey lived in the garage they had converted into a bedroom and we hung out there a couple of times,,we would also go to Frankie and Johnnies,,,my friend his cousin was Mike Peak,,I have not seen him for many years and do not know if he is even still around,I still live in Vero,it sure has changed since those days and man those days were fun,,,
Okeechobee Purple is a strain of powerful tasting and smelling reefer that was in high demand back in the 70's. It had/has a beautiful purple stem. just sayin.
You can tell by the name, Okeechobee was and will always have a special place in my heart and in bedded in my soul! Sittin up at Nubbins Slough listen to some Gary Stewart or out at Platts Bluff..GREAT TIMES! And yes with a lil Okeechobee purple passed around!
Or fishing point of the reef, monkey box, moonshine bay, running dynamite pass, north shore, bird island, harney pond, dices ditch, horse island, run down to cohran's pass and then turners cove. fish the palm tree and then come in Uncle Joes cut to the rim ditch and up to Moore Haven. Billy Earl be playing at BassHole in Lakeport and maybe Dickie Betts and Gary Stewart will stop by. I sure do miss mid to late 1980s around the lake and count myself damned lucky to have lived thru it.
Well after readin the comments . I will digress . I was only there for 40 years. Someone mentioned Nubbin Slough. What about Nix's Fishin Head Quarters. Lock 7 Bait and Tackle. Foys tire shop. Sunset service center on the road what went to Lorida and Cornwell. Posey's Grocery . Course they was on the east side of town. Im an old man . I live in Michigan now. i lived there . The original "Okeechobee Purple" was psychedelic weed full of color, motion and emotion without all of the anxiety of later versions.....
The sky did turn purple in Okeechobee and Central Florida in the twilight as the sun was sinking through a cypress head
Good job!
