      Yes - I think there is much to be said for how difficult the struggle is once it's installed. Some distros are less troublesome for newbies (like me) than others.
      Maybe the line ups for distros should include a 'how much do you like forum searching' as one of the criteria.? 🤣

      Wine is still trash although I don't need to play much games and the ones I play the most (GMOD / Minecraft) have native support. I couldn't run Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver on Q4OS which is just a Debian fork.

    • @sociallyferal4237
      @sociallyferal4237 6 месяцев назад

      @@MrRobot2027-wd9iw The games I currently play tend to have Linux native versions or seem to have tested fine. It's other bits of Linux I find more troublesome. Netflix playback, flatpak/snap sandboxing shenanigans, browsers needing hardware rendering turned off to not lead to stuttering when dragging/using other windows.
      So far I have only tried wine/bottles once to try and get Kindle going. That didn't seem to fair too well. . .
      And I found a command switch for r2modman that stopped it crashing under POP_OS with nVidia card, though laptop with intel onboard it works fine. I think it worked under Fedora also, but that's probably because I didn't manage to work out nvidia driver install and it was using onboard. 😅
      Now I am back on Windows, while I look into issues and resolutions at my leisure rather than as an imperative, and contemplate if I want to try again.
      2024 is currently 5distros/8hours till giving up ; 2 Distros / 2 days til give up; now considering POP for another run. . . LOL. . .
      Though Windows ads and it's install really is getting worse. Had never found them in the settings menus until after a 2024 fresh install.

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 6 месяцев назад

      @@Elian504 I had to wean myself off that mindset. For everything from file managers to pdf readers, I'd always see recommendations for certain applications because they were "light" and/or "minimalist". Though this often meant they weren't as feature-complete or polished as their "bloated" counterparts. Then it eventually occurred to me "Wait, wtf am I even doing this for?" Like, sure, this bare-bones, ultra-efficient approach made sense that one time I installed Gentoo on an ancient laptop made in 2002 just to see if I could. But here though? This is a Ryzen 7 7700X with 32GB of DDR 5.
      I play games that literally require 150 GB of drive space, use 16 GB of RAM and demand thousands of times the CPU usage of every single basic desktop utility combined. Why the hell should I be concerned that a "bloated" application - one that's more convenient to use, looks nicer and can do more - uses 10x the resources as a more spartan, lightweight counterpoint when "10x" just means 20 MB of RAM rather than 2 MB, and 80 MB of drive space rather than 8 MB... on a freaking 2 TB SSD? It's still a pathetically small drop in an ocean of resources. I built this thing to be capable of running demanding games at high settings. So why am I treating everything else like I'm trying to stay within the limits of a 486?
      The install size of Thunar is 8.31 MB while PCManFM is only 1.36 MB. Should I really care about saving those precious 7.25 MB? Worried about Thunar's higher CPU and RAM use when I could still open over a thousand instances of it without my CPU batting an eye? I might as well be standing at an all-you-can-eat buffet and agonizing over fractions of a single grain of rice. Clearly, there are times when you need to step back and ask yourself whether you're still doing certain things for a practical purpose, or just a completely pointless and obsessive ideological one.

    I think another important point is user experience; if you're "new" to Linux (not trying to be rude), go with a popular and common distro (e.g. Ubuntu/Fedora). There are more support resources available and it should be a little easier to deal with any issues that arise.

    • @PKM1010

    I installed Nobara as a third OS on a test machine with Win11 and Mint. Everything went well, including running a AAA windows game. After a few weeks not using the system I started Nobara again. I couldn't get into the desktop. After fixing this, the system started to update itself. TWICE at the same time. After restarting the box Nobara had destroyed my boot-sector and only Nobara's GRUB would start. But nothing worked any more. No more W11 or Mint. It booted into the Nobara CLI and there ended my Nobara experiment. I could not rescue the installation this time. But I managed to recover the Win11 and Mint installations. I think I will use Mint to replace my W10 gaming machine.

      If you see all the system updates are "BETA".
      So basically you are being the victim of Microsoft testing, in addition to Beta versions many system functions work poorly and can corrupt the system, especially drivers, that's why I use Windows 10 with dual boot with Linux, and sooner or later I will migrate completely to Linux.
