Hello umu, just checked your schedule. I saw Isaac's goodbye live stream. I hope he is one of the reactors of the apple reaction video thats been filmed! It would be great for the buddy of the channel to react to it. Thankyou!
I feel like if YG’s concept for Blackpink is that they only come back every once in a while, they need to change it up every once in a while. Blinks have such high expectations by the time a comeback is announced so when it sounds similar to the previous songs, people get tired. Not to mention the fact that Blackpink can do so much more than sit in front of a pretty set and dance or sing. I feel like an actual storyline or different music video style would be so interesting and the girls have so much potential for that.
That's a great point... Imagine if all the BP songs we'd heard by now were on one single 14 song album. I don't think anyone would be upset about this song... but the wait makes it feel worse.
Not really. It's the best performing release by Blackpink to date in Korea and internationally (Best performing single by an idol group in 2020 for that matter). This is more of a problem with Kpop being so saturated. You're so used to getting new music constantly. Blackpink as an act isn't hurting for variety unless you only listen to 2-3 of their songs. The year+ wait is for an album that's yet to be released. This is a great comeback because art is subjective. Negativity tend to be amplify in this situation. I think people in the Kpop fandom bubble has a double standard here.
@@pats3211 ....by what criteria are you judging it the best performing for 2020? Just curious because didn't seventeen just comeback and smash records with left and right? and if its wins then oh my girls song nonstop was really big, not to mention twice and more and more, even the red velvet sub-unit has just come out and been smashing records and made quite the impact. If we are talking about views and getting into the Guinness book then yeah, but its only been out for 2 weeks and many groups have had hugely successful songs that have charted for much longer and gotten many more wins. To call it the best for 2020 its a little early.

What I think is that people are not really as mad about the recycled formula as it is to see YGE taking over a year to give them a comeback - you would expect them to write something fresh and original in over a year, and instead you get something that you've heard so many times before.
but they still mad about them having pre released singles to anticipate the ACTUAL comeback and longer promotions and appearances of bp?? y'all are weird
@666d0x He,s not why do u think BLACKPINK are so famous because QUALITY OVER QUANTITY he starves fans to increase popularity making them want More & More
Listening to BP title songs is like ordering fast food, you know what you are getting every time. Is that a bad thing? Well, if you are a fan of that restaurant, you would be happy with the consistency of the food quality, whereas people who enjoy a variety of food may not like the unchanged recipe.
but in that same way, consistency in food restaurants may be detrimental to them. that’s why food restaurants that are popular constantly introduce innovative or different food ideas and recipes that seclude them from other restaurants. that’s exactly what yg is not allowing blackpink to do. there’s only so well a popular restaurant can survive with the same food...
Yes, still once in a while I going to eat that burgers because I'm enjoy fast food too but say that hamburgers are the best food in the world is something else... I'm still love BP fast music recipe.
yeah, but if after having that same burger meal for months, one I love and have no problem with eating again, you tell me you've got a special surprise menu for being such a good customer then go on to hint at all kinds of foods like steak and pizza. Then you then give me the same burger, and just changed the dipping sauce on the side I am gonna be disappointed and mad. No way around that. If you don't want to change anything thats fine just don't build up peoples hopes just for extra attention.
I've been looking for an analogy to describe BP songs, and this. This is it. The quality of the songs are very good, and they do this specific genre very well, but as a student musician I really want something fresh.
How You Like That is another song where the verses are a lot better than the chorus. Just like with Kill This Love. I'm mesmerized by the sang and rap verses, but I'm not impressed with chorus. Missing something more as always.
I feel the exact same way. I LOVED the verses of Kill this Love. I think the biggest let down for me was the dance break/last chorus. Dududududududududu.... Come on Teddy. Give the girls some ACTUAL lyrics to go with the beat. D4 dance break/last chorus was so much better. Hell, the ending chorus was hands down the BEST part of Kill This Love imo.
@@zicoislab2905 They really have. All of their vocals have improved and you can tell. I just wish Jisoo had a lil bit more lines is all. Just a tad. Otherwise distribution isn't that bad. (It shouldn't be with a 4 member group...)
Its same with most of their songs, same formula thats why its always dissapointing because the drop is so predictable without changes. It becomes boring if you do it in almost all songs... dudududu lyrics at the end also didnt help.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong per say with repeated formulas in songs, but it certainly would’ve been better if there were some tweaks done here and there. Brianna mentioned that maybe thats BP’s brand/style to release that sort of music- and I totally get that. But personally, I would’ve loved to see the groups growth and progress in their music. I guess I wanted to see if they could be more versatile as artists but we’ll have to wait and see with their upcoming singles and album. Regarding the discussion about CA, I agree with what Brianna said. If its to pay homage to a culture you’re inspired by and its done right, I think the sincerity will shine through. Overall, thank you guys for a balanced review for HYLT!
I agree with you.. as a blink, I want them to try something new as well especially that their last 3 singles had the same structure and I don't really think they need that like their songs before D4 were great but Maybe because they blew up with D4, yg thought It's the reason they got that big and I don't agree with that. I'm looking forward to their work with Ryan and Tommy Brown hopefully we will hear something new from BLACKPINK and Teddy will be less involved in the 2 songs.
Since this is a pre-release single I see it as a kind of a best of/homage to previous hits. There are references both in the song and the video. So I hope the title track of the album will give us something new. And I actually love the dance beat kn the end. I would love a whole song in that beat. Bring me Boombayah 2.0 thanks. :P
@@ryanphillip So I've been confused about this whole "Pre-release single" stuff. Is 'How you like that' not their title track for their upcoming album? I see so many people saying it isn't but others saying it is, so I don't know what to believe anymore xD
@@aki6605 I was also confused by this since I've been out of the K-pop sphere. But as I understand it this is just a tease. There will be another single/video released before the album drop in September. And that will be the tittle track.
Also i would say generally its not disrespectful if they aren't misusing religious/sacred symbols/rituals (ex: Native American headdress), generalizing multiple cultures (Ex: generalizing the entire continent of Asia as China or Japan), or promoting harmful stereotypes of a marginalized group (Ex: Using gang culture bc its so "badass").
For me I think (or at least I hope) that the similarities are strategic, especially given that it’s a pre-release single. They’ve been gone for so long that using that familiar, signature sound is safe because if they were to completely divert now then they could alienate the new fan base they’ve built over the last year. For me, it would then make sense for the actual title track to then provide that switch up. This song is just to reintroduce Blackpink to the market and bring their hype back up and then the actual title track can be used to change it up with a greater amount of security. Also, for me the girls’ energy when they sing sells the song for me. They sing in a playful, confident way and they play well off of the playful nature of that chorus synth.
Finally! I found someone with the same thought as me... So glad to see your comment in the sea of people who only look at the song for its "same structure" or "sound" or their very "high expectations that failed" whatever that is... But I think the only failure here, is that some people failed to Look at the Whole picture of it.....and you say it all in your comment... 😁
jc0327 ot4blink like I totally understand peoples’ thoughts and agree with some of them, but I feel like Blackpink has just become the internet’s punching bag. It’s not a bad song in my opinion but I’ve always liked the girls’ sound and to each their own. But I think people have given up hope for the actual comeback and are taking it out on the girls themselves when there’s not really a need to - although I get why people don’t trust YG to handle the girls well because when have they ever. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see but in the meantime I’ll still be enjoying the song lol
@@brynmarie9655 true... I am so tired to seeing people just throwing anything at the girls.. Some have point I can understand but most are just riding on the band wagon of hate on them... I hope it'll end soon and focus in appreciating each idols talents...thats what they deserve. YG is really good at teasing...so yeah lets wait for their next move and pray they don't break their schedules this time.. for now let's just enjoy HYLT... 😁Thank u
@@jcco-lg6zd No, people understand why they had to use the same formula. Almost everyone gets it that their long break is a double-edged sword. For one, it builds the hype and anticipation from the public. But another is that they have to use their signature sound and people will criticize the lack of creativity because it is indeed playing safe. People have strong opinions not because they don't like the song or the girls, they have opinions because they think the girls deserved better. And isn't that what's for the best? To think that it's been years since they debuted and they still don't have an album. I'm blaming the lack of album and music creativity on YG. Once again, people are allowed to have their opinions and as far as I am concerned, a lot of them have nice comments no matter how critical they are.
I prefer when groups "stay true to their sound" but play with it and make it evolve (new Golden Child, Dreamcatcher, NCT for example) rather than just reapeting the same formula. I liked HYLT but I already knew it was going to be DDDD 3.0. I understand that after over a year of hiatus you need something the fans can recognize easily as a BP song. I'm totally ok with that but I hope that they will experiment a bit and try new things in the album. Great review as always !
i agree with you but at the same time do you even hear the other songs? my guess most people who complain didnt even hear other songs. for me forever young is my banger every time i hear it i fucking love it new. even in 30years i will listen to it and people will think WTF is this blackpink OMG LEGENDS!xDxD
@@blackpink1819 that's totally being fanatic because you lost some essential logic there, an mv cannot be "soty" obviously. Don't get heated up because people said they're not fan of the song. Who said that BP should satisfy antis? People can like a song and not be a fan of it.
I was very excited for this comeback and I still really like the music, but let's be honest.... It's more of the same. Same formats, same drops. As Umu said, you know what to expect. I liked the song but now it's becoming a little tiring to listening to it. Ok... that formula brings success and views and records to break, but it's limiting the girls potential with just one style, when we clearly know the girls can pull off a lot of different genres (like Playing With Fire, Don't Know What To Do, Stay, Really and even As If It's Your Last). I really hope that the next single (if we still gonna get a 2nd pre-release or the actual comeback) brings something new, something different to the girls... And lets continue to support them (despite the poor management that the company has)! PS: I'm addicted to a mashup of HYLT with the instrumental of f(x)'s "4 Walls"... it's a style that I wanna see the girls trying (and the 2 songs are great together!!!)
I don't think that they won't do well if they tried something new and if yg is thinking that releasing this type of songs is the only reason they blew up then he is wrong. Personally, I like their songs pre D4 era more than the songs they released after. It is getting a little bit boring since the last 3 singles had the same structure and this is affecting the group badly and limiting them and their potential, I wouldn't have cared as much if they were to release songs frequently like other kpop groups but they CB like once a year so that makes it worse.
I completely agree... and I believe this song was just a choice as a pre release because it's their first full album, and a bunch of new fans will be checking them out, so the formula was probably the right thing to do for first track. But the next track better be different. lol
@@maya-gb3qv It doesn't affect the group badly. This pre-release song is loved in Korea, and western audience/non kpop fans are reintroduced to them on year later to something they did like with KTL. Since it's just pop music, and the target audience are casual listeners, it does not really matter if kpop fans find that an "era" was better than the other. What matter is the girl looks fine, the rapper sounds like Nicky Minaj and the song hit hard - I'm interested. That's it ! I believe that they're going to sound a lot more western-ish from now on. People are going to be pissed.
I like BP and I'll admit the chorus of this song is catchy, but I just wish the girls were given waaay more in regards to this song an how they were able to showcase their talents. I feel like they were done dirty juuust a little bit and that it sounded too similar to their other songs.
My personal problem with the formula goes along with their problem of not having enough comebacks. For them to have such long times in between comebacks to put out something we expected is quite disappointing. To compare to other groups (no not to make other groups look better or worse but simply comparing how their different managements works) Twice in their earlier days had a repetitive formula but they were also having about 3 comebacks a year. Loona has had longer times within comebacks, but they at least give us a completely different concept each time :/. I just don’t like that YG has so much time to give us something new but just delivers the same song with a new expensive MV instead of giving Bp a quality comeback :/
I’m perfectly fine with following a formula that works, but at the very least spice it up with something different each time. Ddu-ddu, Kill This Love, and now How You Like That all sound like tamer versions of Boombayah. Boombayah is a banger, but it’s also musically complex and hard hitting throughout. If YG wants Blackpink to release songs similar to Boombayah, at least make them as musically complex, if not more so.
Also to those saying that it’s a pre-release meant to release hype and that we shouldn’t judge too hard: while that is perfectly valid, it still does not help the fact that Blinks have already seen similar songs to How You Like That, both in title tracks and b-sides of previous albums. A growing number of Blinks, including myself, want Blackpink to be given songs that show musical growth and experimentation. A formula can only be used so many times before it becomes stale. As it stands now, I will still be waiting for the second pre-release, title track, and the rest of the album before making any final judgments. I do hope YG surprises us with the other songs prepared.
@@Empyrean.127 but honestly all their besides are underrated need more love but i guess hype song reall love by genral public because it easy to follow, ballad song of blackpink is one of my fave
BP wants to be played in western audience that do not listen to kpop, and Boombayah does not work as well as HYLT for non kpop fans. It's important to not lose this point of view, because even if Boombayah is a banger, it sounds a more "immature" than KTL or HYLT. A lot more kpop-ish ? Personally i would love them to explore what they did with PWF.
The instrumental intro really, really hyped me up cause it sounded so fucking cool and the verses also sounded really good and i was really feeling it, but then the beat dropped and it kinda disappointed me cause i was not expecting that. Now that it's been a few weeks the drop grew on me and i kinda love it? also the choreo is amazing and it definitely helped in making me love the drop.
Very disappointed in all honesty if the drop and dance break was better i would have probably liked it more but as soon as i heard brass i new it would be more of the same :(
When I first listened to HYLT, I was very interested for the first verse, I was thinking that wow, this was totally different, but when the Chorus came, I was like "ah, there you go", and everything after, it's all the same as their previous songs and MVs. Maybe the differences are their hairstyles and outfits.
I was disappointed with this song because of how much similar it is with other releases from them but also because there is nothing surprising. I think paying homage or including some bits from previous songs is fine and enjoyable but for me they used this too much in HYLT and it sounds just generic (to me at least). Great analysis as always. Looking forward for the next videos :)
I think they use this formula on their main songs too appeal too a western audience. Think about it their pink songs are great too but that’s never going to be a big thing in the western world. There’s a reason groups like Twice and WJSN are not big in the west outside of kpop fans.
@@junbug9844 It makes sense. But I still think you can use a formula to appeal to bigger audiences but still be creative about it or include more bits that will be interesting to hear. Personally, in HYLT my main issue is with the over repetitive and empty chorus. The verses are good, the structure is what we normally gets from BP but the chorus is basically two phrases repeated multiple times with loud instrumental that is almost the same as KTL and D4. It gave a sense of instead of peeking after being building up it just goes down but not in a good or interesting way that would add to the song, it just felt flat. Sorry about the huge text haha
Lillian Barbieri I’m a metal head but grew to love kpop I got introduced too it by a Korean friend in college she showed me girls generation and wonder girls. I never thought in my life I’d ever fan boy over a group especially Teayeon she’s my favorite from GG 😍
As for me, *Blackpink greatest released so far is "Playing with Fire"* Its just differently good then their other songs, wish theyll produce something like that again anytime near future 🙏
OH MY YES I'M WITH YOU when hylt was released i couldn't bring myself to like the song so i just came back to listen to playing with fire and as if it's your last, still their best releases imo
I see many experts here. I don't know anything. But all blackpink songs sound so good to me. And I listen to them everyday and they still sound fresh to me. Even their debut songs are still nice to me.
I don't mind either/or when it comes to formulas I just want the idols to be comfortable and confident with it which is very noticable a lot of times. That being said I am absolutely OBSSESED with How You Like That and listened to it every day since it dropped.
I sort of went into the song prepared to criticize it more but I came out of it liking the song a lot! Personally I think Kill This Love deserved some criticism because the textures overall felt a little samey + the drop was just one note (and felt a lil empty to me) but I think How You Like That was rather a step up from that. Each section felt much more like it had its own identity, from the verse/pre-chorus with the arpeggiating notes (they sounded like pitched up 808s) to the chorus with the bass synth, to Lisa's phrygian dominant verse, to the four-on-the-floor outro. The intro is also more galvanizing to me compared to KTL where the intro is also pretty much the drop. . Granted, it ultimately still adheres to the same formula set by Ddu-du Ddu-du of having a sung pre-chorus -> title of the song -> drop, but it felt much better to hear it done this way compared to the last two songs. I also think Teddy could somehow work on having his drops hit just like 10% harder (or sound fuller) - something like Double Knot by Stray Kids - but I'm overall satisfied. . Overall I think a formula is ok if you wield it correctly (older Dreamcatcher and GFriend come to mind), but I think Kill This Love may have left people feeling anti-formula. I might take it all back if the next single also sounds too much the same tho lol.
I always thought all bp song have the same music? But I can't pinpoint what makes it the same bc I don't hv proper music knowledge maybe yes it's just teddy's recipe lol anyway this win a lot for me than ddu du ddu du. but it has the same feeling when u want to sneeze but the sneeze just gone left u hanging? If that's make sense. But maybe with time passing this would be my favorite than kill this love
I am not against formulas but the problem is I don't like the formula they use since ddudduddu because it's always verse prechorus chorus verse 2/rap verse bridge kinda and a transition to an outro that sounds a lot like the chorus but not quite which sucks if the chorus is great because you don't hear the chorus again and the song feels incomplete and sucks if the chorus is empty because the outro shows what the chorus could have been like and you hate that the song is not as great as it could have been. What also annoys me is that they don't have melodic choruses. Since aiyl.
Really, tired of Teddy? So you don’t like his songs from 2NE1, Big Bang, Winner, IKON, Somi, Sunmi? Guarantee other artists and agencies would love some Teddy produced songs
No I don't want Teddy to not work with Blackpink, he is so important for Blackpink and YG , Out of all blackpink songs I think HYLT is that song that has that iconic "YG swag sound" which I enjoyed a lot and think its better than D4 , KTL and PWF (I know this song is iconic I just liked HYLT a little bit better) I know everyone will really disagree but its fine but anyways Teddy is so important because his music is Blackpink's sound, I just want him to WORK with someone like BlackEyedPilsueng. But I think Teddy improved a bit
@@calcollector650 Teddy has created great music in the past but he is clearly out of ideas now. FYI - almost all of WINNER's and IKON's music has been produced by the members. Including their top hits Love Scenario and Really Really.
honestly i like blackpinks repeated formula to an extent as well... seeing them comeback is very refreshing but after this comeback, especially with the dance break dududududu section it just seemed kind of old to me, i feel like they should keep certain iconic aspects but still add some more creativity to each comeback
Is it weird that I didn't like KTL, but I did like HYLT? I see why people say they're similar, but HYLT's chorus felt a bit more "full" to me somehow. Like, it's not amazing, but it's a fun song for sure.
Love the review. Thank you for the honest discussion. I personally loved the song, mostly because of the personality that BP brings to the song with their vocals and charisma. I'm also from a family with mixed cultures (dad is Indian, mom is Southeast asian, brother-in-law chinese, sister-in-law Arab) so I appreciate the integration of sounds and styles from different cultures. I don't see why anyone should take offense, especially when it's clear that no disrespect is intended.
Take out the "bada bing bada boom" and the ending "dududurururu's" and this song is perfect. Yes, it's formulaic, but I'm surprised no one is talking about how stunningly beautiful the verse/prechorus are. The melody is just otherworldly. And I'm not saying this as a BP stan, just as a general pop enthusiast.
I'll say what everyone's avoiding. I love blackpink and I've been here for 5 years but if you really take away the excitement of a comeback then this song is just mediocre really. And the lyrics are getting really shallow. (similar to the success dick swinging contest I hate in normal Pop music 😐) Obviously I'll stay a loyal Blink but I really hope YG gives our girls a really good first album.
I'm not a Blink and honestly, I feel so bad for the fans after watching HYLT. It was a nice song but underwhelming for the group's one year hiatus from music. I felt like YG is wasting on BP's potential. I believe the girls and the fans deserve more.
I really want to hate this song (and I hate it, in a way), Teddy's writing is predictable and kinda boring, it's basically DDDD 3.0... But it's catchy af, and I still listen to it every day, even though I was hoping for something else after a year of waiting.
I was excited, and it wasn't a bad song, but after I listened to it I didn't feel like listening again, for me the song didn't catch at all. I'm looking forward to the album though
Blackpink's producers know their target audience and they know what works. HYLT is a Blackpink song through and through. They have their signature sound and they know who they are. I want them to do what they want because no matter what they do people are never gonna be pleased. I can assure u 100% that if they switched their sound u would get people that will complain about about it. This formula has been tried and tested and it works great.
i have nothing against 'formula' when groups also experiment a bit and have a lot of songs for different 'mood' But when you have a group with few songs AND following a formula .. it kinda feel boring It's Dudududu V3.0 .. and it shouldn't be . Blackpink can have their 'sound' without that . Good thing i'm only listening to blackpink very casualy , i really can't see myself being a real stan of them .
but have you ever heard theirs b-side songs? you can't just say this about title tracks that are made exclusive to be marketed. You can't say that the songs are the same with Whistle, As If It Your Last, Stay, Really, Hope Not and Kick It in their short discography
Fernanda Guedes True some of their b-sides are different, but most of their songs including title tracks and b-sides sound the same at least in structure. Example: the song will have an intro that says Blackpink in your area with some of the expectant beats in the background then Rosè or Jennie will start the first verse followed by Jennie/Jisoo singing some of the verse followed by a pre-chorus with Rosè, Jisoo or Jenny then a beat drop into the chorus that says the same word over and over again and it’s more beat orientated then follows into the second verse which is either a Lisa or Jennie rap then back to the pre-chorus then to the verse, but probably some added alterations and then to the slow bridge that leads to a dance break and an outro that’s just instrumentals. Not to sound rude or come for BLACKPINK since this is more so on their producer Teddy, but low-key some of BLACKPINK songs start to get boring after I listen to them a couple of times and I love to re-listen to music. I just wish they could give us like a Ballad theme or a slower less beat orientated theme because even in their slower songs like I don’t know what to do or kick it still had this type of EDM or beat going on which don’t get me wrong I like but just give me a pure ballad or vocals or something emotional that doesn’t need a beat to make me like it.
@@f.gds_ I mean title tracks suppose to market the group, make them more appealing to the general public that they will decide to seek for more music (b-sides) from BP right?! When you release 3-4 title tracks continuously with repeated formula, you cannot expect people to be interested and look for your other songs?!
for me this is what blackpink is like sort of trademark... when you hear their music you definitely say that its blackpink... it is a pre release so i think this a reintoduction of themselves reminding that this is what we are and how you liked us... and kudos to the one who thought about greek mythology as the theme... when i found out about this i finally realized how the scenes connect to each other and the mv has sense
I wish some of the onomatopoeia in the song were filled with actual words, I get that onomatopoeias are used to make songs catchy, but there are also catchy BP songs that has actual words and actual chorus, like AIIYL. I wish that the dumdumdumdums in the outro were filled with actual lyrics, I hope the producers starts working in lyrics as well. HYLT is the 9th BP song to use the same formula... Boombayah Whistle Playing With Fire DDU-DU-DDU-DU See U Later Forever Young (Bruh this doesn't even have a secondary phrase, it's just the main phrase (forever young) and added Blackpink is the Revolution to fill the space) Kill This Love Don't Know What to Do How You Like That It's always Main Phrase + 2nd Phrase/onomatopoeia, y'all know it. There isn't really wrong about repeating formulas, but they've done it a lot of times already (9 songs out of 14) and that includes B-Sides. I hope the upcoming album would be great and have some songs with different formulas since it's 1 year preperation. ❤
@@zajacowskyy1542 yes it does every time, if the production and composition of the song compliments those lyrics. Generic lyrics every comeback just shows the mediocrity of their songs.
Then when they change it everyone will say go back to the edm beats like what people say about Twice now so people can’t have there cake and eat it to I’m not saying this about you just about people who say there sick of the same formula I felt this song was very different while still being blackpink style I like groups having a iconic thing they do like the blackpink ending beat drops and Momolands after the chorus rap break
Great vid guys! When I first listened to HYLT, I really thought "Wow, this IS that Blackpink sound." and I love it. Apart from the intro & dancebreak section, i love Lisa's part where they used Middle Eastern scale. But i'm also curious if people/music experts would consider it as cultural appropriation or not. So thank you for tackling it in your reaction, Umu & Brianna!
I think in the end I honestly don’t care. There is so much music and there are so many artists- I have artists/groups I like, and the songs themselves are separate from that. I either like a song or don’t, and it’s fine. I like How you Like that; I liked Whistle and Playing with Fire more. Just my taste. I keep a personal top ten (no order) of kpop-and-related songs each year, and often my favourite groups don’t make the list. I’m just here to enjoy music on a song by song basis. I can support a group/artist and still think a particular comeback isn’t my favourite. I just set it aside. Thanks for a great video and review!
Talking about the songs' formulas from 4D to HYLT, I know we're supposed to up 4D because it's the first to use the "formula" but I feel like this should be given to Kill This Love. I'm no musician but to an ordinary's listeners ear I feel like the chorus "Let's kill this love" and the accompanying instrumental just sounds better than "Hit you with that ddu-ddu-ddu..." What's even more better is the last part, I forgot what you call that section of the songs but I also feel KTL did it the best than 4D and HYLT. That "We must kill this love, yes it's sad but it's true..." is much satisfying because IT HAS LYRICS. I'm not a fan of more than 5 secs of repeated edm section without singing so maybe that's why.
I recognized that it was similar to their other songs, but I still enjoyed it. I knew if it would follow a similar formula to an older song: like Kill This Love, then I’d likely like this one too, and yeah..I did. It’s a bop for me. Despite liking it, I can understand why people were underwhelmed and expecting more after such a long hiatus. I’d still like to see a change up on their formula for the next comeback, because it is getting a little tiring and I wouldn’t mind something surprising and fresh either. But I’m certainly not mad or frustrated with at what we were given.
I think the reason people got so mad at this song was because we got told it was going to be something completely new, different style for them different kind of song and that built expectations. If we just got told it was a pre-release I don't think people would have been quite as angry because before we got told this people were expecting a similar sound to KTL and D4. Its like after having the same roast chicken for a month you tell me you will make me a surprise dinner, hinting at steak, roast beef and duck, then I get a baked chicken breast I'm gonna be mad. Just facts. YG just loves to build up hype with fake promises and not delivering, it was only a matter of time before this happened.
Since this is a pre-release I felt like it was nice that they went with something slightly different but still has their sound. Hopefully the next pre-release and title song will have a different vibe. I’m actually impressed and like this song it’s more hip hop like so I get why some don’t like it. The gp likes them and a lot of the fans like the song so I’m happy with what HYLT is achieving
I don't mind repeated formulas since it's a tried and tested method. The problem with artists overusing the same formula is it always arrives at the same exact answer as if no matter the math problem and the values, when a formula is solved with a formula, the value of X is always the same exact number. In math, a formula can be further developed and/or expanded. In the case of music, some people wished that they developed and expanded the "Blackpink formula" especially after a long hiatus and a lot of delays.
I kinda miss those days where every bp comeback song was different. I mean from boombayah and whistle, playing with fire and stay, and then as if its your last and then ddu, but from then on ktl and hylt sounds similar to ddu and started getting boring. I wish they put out something different next time.
i honestly have a lot of fate for the album because this formula is used on a pre single, i can definitely say the title track wont be this formula now because their mini albums dont have songs with same formula
I think multiculturalism is so essential in today's society and this idea of "if it's not yours, don't touch it" is a backwards way of thinking for the reason that it makes negative stereotypes worse. Without that voice being shown, people are left to grow their own, inaccurate ideas of what a culture is. Obviously there are inaccurate portrayals of cultures from people outside the culture (which is the real root of the problem). Hopefully the world can move towards having more cultural "ambassadors" in media to ensure things are portrayed respectfully.
I don't think a formula is necessarily a bad thing but with such a small discography their songs definitely start to sound a little samey. I also felt that the chorus could have more energy or a fuller texture.
The thing is originally BP didn't go for a repeated formula, so to me it's honestly either the company wanting to go for the sure thing to make sure they get the money or somehow the production team got complacent.
I love this song soooo much! I've been looping the song so hard since it's release :) I understand why people having issue with the song tho, same formula / same sounds / meaningless lyrics, etc. They want new sound, I get that. For me I am not mad about it, it's a BLACKPINK song, it's on brand, and the dance break is everything :D
I'll never understand people who insist that Blackpink change its musical identity. It's like going to a place known for fried chicken and asking them when they'll start selling chili dogs and clam chowder. There are so many groups that make all types of music. Go stan the ones that you want Blackpink to sound like. It's not rocket science. That's why I'm a multi-stan, and I love the fact that each group has their own unique sound/concept that I can depend on to satisfy my expectations. 🥰🤗
I feel they went for familiarity because they knew this was a pre-release and wanted to please the Blink fanbase. The album should provide more diversity as we know they have worked with several Western songwriters/producers and there is also a potential Ariana Grande/BP super collab (possibly the 2nd single before the album). Thank you for the breakdown and I loved the “3, 2, 1 BLACKPINK!” intro.
For the mv I noticed most of big three seems run out of ideas. I like RV too and their mv is just like back to 2010, idk what happen with this big agency, the girls have great potential and deserves more high quality. But hey for bp it's just pre single hope the title track will be legit
Man I think it's completely different, kill this love does have the same structure that D4 but How You Like That doesn't at all, seriously, the dance break and outros are so much longer and more full, the pre chorus is also different, the bass in the first and second chorus are different( which for the previous songs the chorus are always the same)
This whole song, to me, seemed like Teddy created an amalgamation of all of BP's biggest songs, with a ton of references and reminiscent lyrics, to remind old fans and try to teach new ones. As a pre-release single to build to their first full album, it's perfect. That doesn't mean the song is perfect... but it's a tool, and from a marketing perspective, it's the best choice.
I agree to this and I also remember with the girls' interview they said that this song is to show blackpink's color and charisma that only they have. So seeing as this was only a pre-release it has that vibe that just says this is the blackpink that has clinched everyone's love and attention, it's as if they're re-introducing themselves.
Honestly the formula is BLACKPINK's trademark at this point. I mean it's classic BP. So as long as each comeback has different sounds and the girls slay, then I'm good! Ddu-du x2 I loved, Kill This Love, not so much, but THIS?? Absolutely in love with this comeback.
I have to admit they went to the same overall structure (including shorter running time for fast turnaround). However, they did experiment with the hip-hop beat in the chorus. That part seems to have been well received by some and is something I don't recall from a Kpop girl group. Let's hope they shock us in overalls, singing country/folk song with deep philosophical lyrics in upcoming album.
What's the point of stanning a kpop group if every comeback they dont completely change their style and make something that you have never heard from then, a style that maybe dont like yet but are excited to learn to like? I used to stan blackpink but now they make bored...
They don’t need to completely reinvent themselves. Like they don’t need to comeback with a cutesy concept next time. Just actually make a new song, not the same song with a different mask.
They shouldn’t have bothered producing a new track. I would have actually been satisfied if they just gave Kick It an MV since at the very least it doesn’t reuse the same old formula by having an actual chorus.
Personally, I can see where the formula part is coming from, but I am also a musician and I can say without a doubt that each Blackpink title track is uniquely different from every other one. Besides this, their B-sides also explore new genres, much like Dreamcatcher who usually stick with rock for the title tracks but are very versatile within the album. I can only imagine how many genres will be on Blackpink's first full album.
I really appreciate your reaction. Really good although I don't really understand many musical terms. But,it's nice to see how you both are being objective about a song, K-pop especially. Thanks!
They're gonna stick to the "formula" until people get sick of it. So far there's no sign of that. I chuckle whenever I hear someone say they gotta come up with something different. WHY?? They're not the Beatles who reinvented themselves every other year. They've been around since 2016 but they only have about a dozen songs, with their first full album about to come out in a couple months. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
So good that Blackpink released 'Love to Hate Me' in this album as well, this song fits all RUclips-musical-experts in this comment section like a glove ;) ...
I saw some comments comparing the teddy formula to your favorite food in a restaurants/fast food. I disagree. Are you a bp stan or a formula stan? About the restaurant comparison, saying that you want to order always your favorite food when you eat it's like saying that you want bp to have always the same song but with different beats! It's more like going to the restaurant and asking your favorite food and they give you the same dish that you left on the table the day before. Changing the song structure for once, after 3 cb, will not change blackpink or their sound. Look at the other groups! Dreamcatcher for example are always changing their song, BUT their sound it's always there. I think every fan would love to see their favorite artist grow artistically so stop stanning a formula and stop being selfish, you won't lose your love for blackpink.
actually, this formula of writing melody of this song came from 2011 with 2NE1 "I Am The Best". And then, we had "Fantastic Baby" in 2012 and "Bang Bang Bang" in 2015. And you know. all of that was really big. I don't know if YG saw this and then, they use it for almost of BP's title songs since "Whistle". I really hope that you'll make different experience for me with their 1st full album. If not, it's really sad
lots of ppl want blackpink to do something different but they DID try a dif song vibe in 2016 with Stay but that still remains as their least viewed MV even in 2020 so if ppl arent receiving their dif stuff as well as their “repeated formula” songs then there’s no issue with them wanting to release hits that they know the genpub will enjoy
I think they have to balance the teaser with selling the album in September (or whenever). So it's very teasy saving the 4 to the floor for only 16 bars at the end. You even said it's over so fast. They want to build anticipation imo :) Thanks for the reaction! Always learn a lot.
I am old fan yg ex 2nel fan,big bang fan, winner fan, ikonic ,blink. I would love teach new fans who keep saying they hate teddy when they should teddy created more songs not just from black pink but other groups from yg.
I know many people dislike this song, but I can’t stop listening to it. Maybe I just have mediocre taste in music but it’s just so catchy? The chorus and drop are just iconic tbh. I imagine this would go HARD asf in concert, and just the idea of witnessing this live gets me all hyped up.
I actually like this song and I can't name a Blackpink song that I DO like. Ever since I got into kpop, I've tried to get into them but never have the desire to listen to their songs after checking them out. I recognize that How You Like That is like the same formula for other title tracks of theirs and I just have to think that Blackpink themselves must be so bored and annoyed having a lack of comebacks and when they do they're really similar. Something else I like about the song, though, is that it helped me to recognize nuances in their voices. I've never thought of them as much of a vocal group, and still don't to be honest, but there were moments that made each member stand out. It makes me wish even more that their songs weren't so much in the same formula because I want to see growth.
I quite get why people say they are tired with the same formula and I think it's because yg takes way too much time to give blackpink a comeback so people put a lot of high expectations and end up getting disappointed when they hear kind of the same vibe/sound lol, but honestly no matter how much I try to understand them I really don't hear a lot of similarities between their oldest songs and hyly, but yeah it's just my perception of what I hear.
heh I never thought about how many Dms your channel would get by people wanting you to validate their hate.. must be a lot :p my personal view, If i go to my favorite restaurant I want my favorite chef to make me my favorite dish, tweaked a bit, but not stray from the recipe I like, the tweaking will over time create a new taste without alienating me from my favorite taste... have the same approach to the music I like, I like it because of the structure and formula, and I appreciate the small tweaks that are made, this time around I noticed the vocals were utilized differently, hard to explain but more raw and I liked the flair.... just my two cents about the CA thing apparently I am not allowed to have an opinion nor a stance nor a thought, but I dislike segregation so I will speak my mind regardless :p there are many things to unpack, first of culture stagnates in a vacuum, and grows in unison with others, thats how we got to where we are in a globalized world, cultural appreciation is important for artistic growth, and the best way to teach others about your culture is to be open and welcoming, gatekeeping serves none. now on the flip side, and sorry to say this, but the US has always been really bad at it, like really really bad, and I can totally sympathize with american subcultures guarding their uniqueness, because Cultural appropriation is a very real thing in the US throughout your short history, and again I am not allowed to talk on this subject, so educate me if I am wrong, but Cultural appropriation is when someone takes a culturally specific style and markets it as their own invention, profiting of the history of others without acknowledgment to said culture and thus preventing said culture to grow through appreciation? So far in Kpop they seem very much aware of where they take culturally specific traits from, but again maybe I am wrong, and maybe I just missed that interview where the industry said they invented it, educate me with a source if you can. that said I think a discussion should be had about cultural supremacy, because why do we westerners insist that everyone else must follow our doctrines, and adhere to our punishments of past mistakes? why should we be judge and jury over another culture, isnt that mindset exactly what got us into the very real issue of cultural appropriation? the Idea that our culture was so superior that we could just pick and chose from "subservient" (slave times, not saying it is so now) cultures and us adopting it was a boon to "them"? isnt segregation the concept of one race/creed/religion is allowed something others are not? and are we engaging in segregation by saying under no circumstance can anyone else do what my race/creed/religion does? there is ofc the flipside of showing respect, and that is just logical we should always call out when any race/creed/religion/culture is being mocked, but mocking (blackface, claiming cornrows as your own, putting horns on viking helmets) is not the same as appreciating, and if the line gets blurry we should educate and inform, not cancel and lynch. just my two cents unwanted and not allowed stay safe stay healthy
People can say whatever they want about this song, but the reality is that it’s a HUGE hit in Korea. As long as they’re successful, I doubt they’ll change their formula. There’s clearly a lot of people that enjoy this song. Somebody’s not doing the math right!
I like repeated formulas... they will change it up eventually. I love this song, it's probably my second favourite Blackpink track right now (I can't stop loving AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST, every time I hear it I feel great). Thanks for continuing to bring the quality reacts
I love Jisoo, Lisa, Rose, and Jennie. Watching Blackpink House and the tons of interviews etc, I really enjoy hearing about themselves and their interests. I feel however with Blackpink their individual abilities are not being utilized at all (or really being under utilized). And it's not just Blackpink, it's the whole YG Entertainment. There are so many other rookie groups who have more say in their songs (and just more songs lol) then Blackpink who has been around since 2016. I'm sure the girls feel it too. They always mention how they want a full album. I like HYLT but I agree with a lot of the comments made in the video and on the comments. After more than a year hiatus, us Blinks are craving for something. However, we also want to see the growth of the group and sound. I feel we have not gotten there but tbh, they have the same producers so I think if anything needs to change, it's the musical team doing the songs (and let the girls have a freaking part of the music making process!! (songwriting, producing etc)).
i dont know i dont feel like this was THAT similar to dddd and ktl?? like this song starts with a whole different vibe, unlike dddd and ktl that start super high energy... i know the empty chorus is almost the same but i dont feel like the whole song is similar to their previous ones.
about cultural appropriation of using middle easterners scales/sounds quite often in kpop...personally as a middle eastern I won’t usually take it as an offence *unless* it would include usage of religious related parts of the islamic religion. some examples of such offensive/unacceptable parts would be: usage of mosques images, Quran script texts or a dictation of Quran, to anything music related!! weather its a song, mv or for a stage etc. because all of those are considered sacred. and has their own respectful ethics, one of which to never play music at or around. but unfortunately, all of those offensive examples I’ve mentioned have occurred before in the Kpop scene. which many people tried to notify the accused companies/artist later on about their ignorant actions.. but most of it have been ignored
i can see where people would say their comebacks can be formulaic, but i still think that the differences DDD, KTL, and HYLT are enough to carry themselves as also very separate. i was honestly worried they'd try to top KTL with intensity (not possible lol) and was really happy when HYLT was still a banger but not trying to ~be~ KTL. and honestly, if you're familiar with their EPs and B-sides, they mix up their sound up quite a bit. i know teddy is trying to make the most commercially viable song possible, so right now i dont really have a complaint about the last few releases. and no one does what blackpink does as well as they do tbh
although I would prefer something a bit more complex and different from them, I actually really like this song. it’s very catchy and the part in the chorus where they say “look at you now look at me” I think adds something a bit different than what their other songs like “Kill this love” or “ddu-du ddu-du” do. I just hope with their upcoming album they really change it up, maybe give a storyline or something to it.
Because YG knew D4 was their biggest hit, they decided they should comeback with the same formula but unfortunately people also get tired of things that are so used and repeated. YG come with something new gurl.
I feel like i'm the only one that was reminded of Big Bangs BANG BANG BANG lmfao Like it did not remind me of anything else form them per say but OTHER artists. I was reminded of Big Bang, I was reminded of 4minute. Like it's weird, i don't get Kill This Love of DUDUDU, I get past artists lol but this was another good reaction
I don't know but maybe haters need to learn more about Teddy's music because he have been long enough making music in the industry (his first created songs was older than my age and I'm 22) He have been making lots of music with different style, depend on the singers style.. and I like how he put 1 and 2 together in Blackpink music. Some of their songs was feels similar in some aspect, but its just how he describe Blackpink is, and its great. Anyway, if you want different style of Blackpink songs, listen to their B Side track songs, they have not many but its enough to give you the different vibe. Just my suggestion.
Yeah it kind of seemed like the familiar bits of their old songs were put there on purpose as an homage. Sort of summarise their music till now as they start a new era with the first full album. Next song will tell if this is the case perhaps.

@@galaxyofc12 go react Jolly analyst about mv xD
@@traytrayland2279 You're aware of other group breaking records, but you can't be bother to look into Blackpink?

They have gained approximately 3 million new RUclips subscribers since the release of HYLT.
@salsa de zarigueya he ALWAYS did the bare minimum :) 2ne1 only had 2 albums for their whole entire career and you see they were still successful so..
@@atsuki18 just because 2NE1 were mistreated doesn't mean BLACKPINK should experience it too
@@atsuki18 you saw how sad 2NE1 members with just 2 albums right? And how shock people are?
So accurate
yeah, but if after having that same burger meal for months, one I love and have no problem with eating again, you tell me you've got a special surprise menu for being such a good customer then go on to hint at all kinds of foods like steak and pizza.
Hell, the ending chorus was hands down the BEST part of Kill This Love imo.
same!! im not a fan of them but i always love the verses and hate the chorus its frustrating :c
Indeed! Also, you can see that their vocals really improved this cb. ♥ we all know that they can much more, sadly it is not maximized on this cb.
GP likes blackpink's formula so why blackpink will change it? To satisfy their anti fans.
MV is soty and the song is soty.
i agree with you but at the same time do you even hear the other songs? my guess most people who complain didnt even hear other songs. for me forever young is my banger every time i hear it i fucking love it new. even in 30years i will listen to it and people will think WTF is this blackpink OMG LEGENDS!xDxD
@@blackpink1819 that's totally being fanatic because you lost some essential logic there, an mv cannot be "soty" obviously. Don't get heated up because people said they're not fan of the song. Who said that BP should satisfy antis? People can like a song and not be a fan of it.
IZ*ONE also. I'm impressed how they stay true to their sound without sounding repetitive.
@Black Pink Because that’s called being an artist, yes it’s also a business but this is the just the laziest way to make money.
I agree
it's not the tittle track. so
I completely agree... and I believe this song was just a choice as a pre release because it's their first full album, and a bunch of new fans will be checking them out, so the formula was probably the right thing to do for first track.
1. The mvs are now looking very similar to each other
2. Their choreo is getting more and more strange with no memorable key moves
I do hope YG surprises us with the other songs prepared.
they didn even give jennie a rap it will be better if jennie ahve a rap part in there
Carlyn Zpop I’m definitely waiting for that too; I miss rapper Jennie.
Very disappointed in all honesty if the drop and dance break was better i would have probably liked it more but as soon as i heard brass i new it would be more of the same :(
Ikr, overall those sections felt sort of empty. Somehow the verses were more impactful, or at least had more character to them
When I first listened to HYLT, I was very interested for the first verse, I was thinking that wow, this was totally different, but when the Chorus came, I was like "ah, there you go", and everything after, it's all the same as their previous songs and MVs.
Lillian Barbieri I get what your saying. I like this comeback overall, but it’s not my favorite song from them lol.
Lillian Barbieri I’m a metal head but grew to love kpop I got introduced too it by a Korean friend in college she showed me girls generation and wonder girls. I never thought in my life I’d ever fan boy over a group especially Teayeon she’s my favorite from GG 😍

As for me,
*Blackpink greatest released so far is "Playing with Fire"*
Its just differently good then their other songs, wish theyll produce something like that again anytime near future 🙏

OH MY YES I'M WITH YOU when hylt was released i couldn't bring myself to like the song so i just came back to listen to playing with fire and as if it's your last, still their best releases imo
FACTS!!!! I NEED FOR THEM TO GO BACK TO THIS SOUND PLEASE
@@human7491 k.
I see many experts here. I don't know anything. But all blackpink songs sound so good to me. And I listen to them everyday and they still sound fresh to me. Even their debut songs are still nice to me.
I really like the beginning and the prechorus, but i just can't get used to the chorus, i wish the song would be more like the prechorus 😅
The chorus and bridge are the only two parts I like about the song
I don't mind either/or when it comes to formulas I just want the idols to be comfortable and confident with it which is very noticable a lot of times.
That being said I am absolutely OBSSESED with How You Like That and listened to it every day since it dropped.
Yes agree
exactly, until today, i play it everyday. I think people who disappointed of this song should give a try. But, if they don't that's okay
Exactly. They don't understand the this is the reason why people love blackpink ❤️.
1days ago? Are u time traveler ?
I always thought all bp song have the same music? But I can't pinpoint what makes it the same bc I don't hv proper music knowledge maybe yes it's just teddy's recipe lol anyway this win a lot for me than ddu du ddu du. but it has the same feeling when u want to sneeze but the sneeze just gone left u hanging? If that's make sense. But maybe with time passing this would be my favorite than kill this love
One day ago? Wtf
@@shinesara226 probably post that before midnight and now it's past midnight so already new day
I am not against formulas but the problem is I don't like the formula they use since ddudduddu because it's always verse prechorus chorus verse 2/rap verse bridge kinda and a transition to an outro that sounds a lot like the chorus but not quite which sucks if the chorus is great because you don't hear the chorus again and the song feels incomplete and sucks if the chorus is empty because the outro shows what the chorus could have been like and you hate that the song is not as great as it could have been. What also annoys me is that they don't have melodic choruses. Since aiyl.
man I am just tired of teddy. bp can do more and be versatile af they are such talented artists but yg really... meh
Teddy has been half assing for years. YG needs to have another producer.
Yea, time to drop him. Need new and fresh songs for BP
I really wish that dance break could be split and they would fill the half of it with more lyrics
yayakibo + real words 😬 (no bashing but at the last part of the song I felt a little fooled :/ )
Is it weird that I didn't like KTL, but I did like HYLT? I see why people say they're similar, but HYLT's chorus felt a bit more "full" to me somehow. Like, it's not amazing, but it's a fun song for sure.
Same! I enjoy listening o HYLT immediately as compared to KTL
Though I’m not so into this song I can still learn something from umu🧐
love rosé’s intro and Lisa’s rap part
Love the review. Thank you for the honest discussion. I personally loved the song, mostly because of the personality that BP brings to the song with their vocals and charisma. I'm also from a family with mixed cultures (dad is Indian, mom is Southeast asian, brother-in-law chinese, sister-in-law Arab) so I appreciate the integration of sounds and styles from different cultures. I don't see why anyone should take offense, especially when it's clear that no disrespect is intended.
It was underwhelming for me I wish it was more musically interesting
It was tho..
I don’t really mind the repeated formula, I just want another pink concept. AIYL is, in my opinion, their best song.
Oh my gosh, finally finding same opinion, i really love As if it your last, it suit blackpink so much, the cute side and swag side
AIIYL is really a great song, it's catchy and there is actually a lyrical chorus and less onomatopaeia ❤❤❤

“Is it really a comeback or a coming” LMAO
how about candy by baekhyun and the whole delight album, its like the only release this year yall didnt react to?

This formula has been tried and tested and it works great.
i have nothing against 'formula' when groups also experiment a bit and have a lot of songs for different 'mood'
But when you have a group with few songs AND following a formula .. it kinda feel boring
It's Dudududu V3.0 .. and it shouldn't be .
Boombayah
Whistle
Playing With Fire
DDU-DU-DDU-DU
See U Later
Forever Young (Bruh this doesn't even have a secondary phrase, it's just the main phrase (forever young) and added Blackpink is the Revolution to fill the space)
Kill This Love
Don't Know What to Do
How You Like That
It's always Main Phrase + 2nd Phrase/onomatopoeia, y'all know it.
There isn't really wrong about repeating formulas, but they've done it a lot of times already (9 songs out of 14) and that includes B-Sides. I hope the upcoming album would be great and have some songs with different formulas since it's 1 year preperation. ❤
Versatility with meaningful lyrics > edm drops every comeback
Meaningful lyrics doesn't make a song better
@@zajacowskyy1542 yes it does every time, if the production and composition of the song compliments those lyrics. Generic lyrics every comeback just shows the mediocrity of their songs.
Then when they change it everyone will say go back to the edm beats like what people say about Twice now so people can’t have there cake and eat it to I’m not saying this about you just about people who say there sick of the same formula I felt this song was very different while still being blackpink style I like groups having a iconic thing they do like the blackpink ending beat drops and Momolands after the chorus rap break
The chorus just feels so... awkward and out of place.
FINALLY, I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR MY WHOLE LIFE, everyday i always checked this channel in case i didnt get the notifications😭
Talking about the songs' formulas from 4D to HYLT, I know we're supposed to up 4D because it's the first to use the "formula" but I feel like this should be given to Kill This Love.
I'm no musician but to an ordinary's listeners ear I feel like the chorus "Let's kill this love" and the accompanying instrumental just sounds better than "Hit you with that ddu-ddu-ddu..."
What's even more better is the last part, I forgot what you call that section of the songs but I also feel KTL did it the best than 4D and HYLT.

All I hear in my head during the chorus.
.
"The ting goes skrrrahh, pap, pap, ka-ka-ka
Skibiki-pap-pap, and a pu-pu-pudrrrr-boom"
Yg started making songs like ddu du ddu du because it was really popular and we won't get title tracks like stay or whistle because of the views
i honestly have a lot of fate for the album because this formula is used on a pre single, i can definitely say the title track wont be this formula now because their mini albums dont have songs with same formula
As soon as she said “3 2 1 BLACKPINK” an ad started playing
I've been looping the song so hard since it's release :)
I understand why people having issue with the song tho, same formula / same sounds / meaningless lyrics, etc. They want new sound, I get that.
For me I am not mad about it, it's a BLACKPINK song, it's on brand, and the dance break is everything :D
I love this one more than Kill This Love despite, for me, both are having similar vibe to it.
They're just jealous cos BP got popular with only few songs and garnering millions of views and money
You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to react to this
i hope you could react to BPs Lovesick Girls. This is the Pink portion of Blackpink 😉.
The best part of this video is at 6:01 when U evaluates the opening over and over. More like that please.
Similar song structure right ? And the MV have similarity too
For the mv I noticed most of big three seems run out of ideas.
Thank youu Umu!!❤️💗
Honetsly, I always think what the similiraties are? 😂😂😂 I think their all songs are different.
Wait I got into Blackpink and kpop in general because of ddu du ddu du also omg periodt 😭
I quite get why people say they are tired with the same formula and I think it's because yg takes way too much time to give blackpink a comeback so people put a lot of high expectations and end up getting disappointed when they hear kind of the same vibe/sound lol, but honestly no matter how much I try to understand them I really don't hear a lot of similarities between their oldest songs and hyly, but yeah it's just my perception of what I hear.
heh I never thought about how many Dms your channel would get by people wanting you to validate their hate.. must be a lot :p
my personal view, If i go to my favorite restaurant I want my favorite chef to make me my favorite dish, tweaked a bit, but not stray from the recipe I like, the tweaking will over time create a new taste without alienating me from my favorite taste... have the same approach to the music I like, I like it because of the structure and formula, and I appreciate the small tweaks that are made, this time around I noticed the vocals were utilized differently, hard to explain but more raw and I liked the flair.... just my two cents
about the CA thing apparently I am not allowed to have an opinion nor a stance nor a thought, but I dislike segregation so I will speak my mind regardless :p
there are many things to unpack, first of culture stagnates in a vacuum, and grows in unison with others, thats how we got to where we are in a globalized world, cultural appreciation is important for artistic growth, and the best way to teach others about your culture is to be open and welcoming, gatekeeping serves none.
now on the flip side, and sorry to say this, but the US has always been really bad at it, like really really bad, and I can totally sympathize with american subcultures guarding their uniqueness, because Cultural appropriation is a very real thing in the US throughout your short history, and again I am not allowed to talk on this subject, so educate me if I am wrong, but Cultural appropriation is when someone takes a culturally specific style and markets it as their own invention, profiting of the history of others without acknowledgment to said culture and thus preventing said culture to grow through appreciation?
So far in Kpop they seem very much aware of where they take culturally specific traits from, but again maybe I am wrong, and maybe I just missed that interview where the industry said they invented it, educate me with a source if you can.
that said I think a discussion should be had about cultural supremacy, because why do we westerners insist that everyone else must follow our doctrines, and adhere to our punishments of past mistakes? why should we be judge and jury over another culture, isnt that mindset exactly what got us into the very real issue of cultural appropriation? the Idea that our culture was so superior that we could just pick and chose from "subservient" (slave times, not saying it is so now) cultures and us adopting it was a boon to "them"? isnt segregation the concept of one race/creed/religion is allowed something others are not? and are we engaging in segregation by saying under no circumstance can anyone else do what my race/creed/religion does?
there is ofc the flipside of showing respect, and that is just logical we should always call out when any race/creed/religion/culture is being mocked, but mocking (blackface, claiming cornrows as your own, putting horns on viking helmets) is not the same as appreciating, and if the line gets blurry we should educate and inform, not cancel and lynch.
just my two cents unwanted and not allowed
stay safe stay healthy
People can say whatever they want about this song, but the reality is that it’s a HUGE hit in Korea. As long as they’re successful, I doubt they’ll change their formula. There’s clearly a lot of people that enjoy this song. Somebody’s not doing the math right!

That's my first reaction when it's end
Been waiting for this!
i dont know i dont feel like this was THAT similar to dddd and ktl?? like this song starts with a whole different vibe, unlike dddd and ktl that start super high energy... i know the empty chorus is almost the same but i dont feel like the whole song is similar to their previous ones.
As If Your Last is still my favorite track from them... Now they just stick to one formula and similar beats
about cultural appropriation of using middle easterners scales/sounds quite often in kpop...personally as a middle eastern I won’t usually take it as an offence *unless* it would include usage of religious related parts of the islamic religion. some examples of such offensive/unacceptable parts would be:
usage of mosques images, Quran script texts or a dictation of Quran, to anything music related!! weather its a song, mv or for a stage etc. because all of those are considered sacred. and has their own respectful ethics, one of which to never play music at or around.
but unfortunately, all of those offensive examples I’ve mentioned have occurred before in the Kpop scene. which many people tried to notify the accused companies/artist later on about their ignorant actions..
but most of it have been ignored
i can see where people would say their comebacks can be formulaic, but i still think that the differences DDD, KTL, and HYLT are enough to carry themselves as also very separate. i was honestly worried they'd try to top KTL with intensity (not possible lol) and was really happy when HYLT was still a banger but not trying to ~be~ KTL. and honestly, if you're familiar with their EPs and B-sides, they mix up their sound up quite a bit. i know teddy is trying to make the most commercially viable song possible, so right now i dont really have a complaint about the last few releases. and no one does what blackpink does as well as they do tbh
although I would prefer something a bit more complex and different from them, I actually really like this song. it’s very catchy and the part in the chorus where they say “look at you now look at me” I think adds something a bit different than what their other songs like “Kill this love” or “ddu-du ddu-du” do. I just hope with their upcoming album they really change it up, maybe give a storyline or something to it.
Aren't you gonna react with the other songs in The Album? :((((
Because YG knew D4 was their biggest hit, they decided they should comeback with the same formula but unfortunately people also get tired of things that are so used and repeated. YG come with something new gurl.
I feel like i'm the only one that was reminded of Big Bangs BANG BANG BANG lmfao
Like it did not remind me of anything else form them per say but OTHER artists. I was reminded of Big Bang, I was reminded of 4minute. Like it's weird, i don't get Kill This Love of DUDUDU, I get past artists lol but this was another good reaction
Interesting 🤔
I don't know but maybe haters need to learn more about Teddy's music because he have been long enough making music in the industry (his first created songs was older than my age and I'm 22)
He have been making lots of music with different style, depend on the singers style.. and I like how he put 1 and 2 together in Blackpink music.
