Bretonnia is an excellent example of how to make cavalry viable in this game, though after each micro intensive battle like this you need a week on Maldives to recover

I had a similar strategy playing Clan Moulder where I used wolfrats the same way. Always 4-5 Units against one. I didn't have enough money or tech to recruit enough brood horrors, so I filled the army up with them.
Very intense battles, but it worked as a temporary solution.
@@etuanno true, speed is so underrated characteristic, which is why again grail bois are so good: dudes are literally playing World of Tanks and Need for Speed at the same time
In every Total war works kind of like this.

Man, this game would be a NIGHTMARE if the AI understood even the slightest morsel of strategy.
That's why AI gets the cheats, brother.
If it did it wouldn’t be getting cheats in the same way though. They’re there out of necessity for that very reason

When the Grail Knights bunched up all i could think about was how good a Doomrocket would have been.

I have a memory of watching a duel once, zoomed way in. They were fighting close to a cliff. My duelist killed the enemy, and the body flew backwards perfectly and ragdolled off the cliff.
Definitely one of the best moments I've had playing this game.

I may actually try a bretonnia campaign. I’ve always wanted to run a cavalry army that was actually viable.

Any missile army is great at exploiting AI stupidity.
Being always fresh specially in this kind of situation helps a lot.

How did you get them to mill about in the center? Is it specific AI to this map? They ALWAYS go straight for my forces if I have them tucked in a corner, even with a hero split off, although I have never done that on this map.
I believe it has to do with line of sight and the way the AI treats the choke point. If you push someone across the choke point before the ai gets into position it tends to freak out and worry about the one you sent.
We are waiting for the next roster reviews!

Grail Guardians is the only other unit that could have done that almost as well, but yeah, that’s still Bretonia.

I'm surprised that the knights are fresh because IIRC perfect vigor states you don't lose vigor or gain fatigue. I took that to mean that whatever fatigue the unit starts with is what they keep for the rest of the battle.

Forcing Skaven to be too Skaven by killing their troops is 200iq TWWH.
In WH3 version 3.1, Grail Knight is TRUE tier A unit now.
Why don’t you use the lance ability? It says it gives speed and acceleration would that not be better?
no they get stuck more in lance formation. lance formation sucks on very hard battle difficulty. you only use it when you're 100% committing to the charge which i pretty much never do.

extra penetration means they get stuck more. I needed mobility more than charge bonus
Why don’t use formation atack?
Lance formations end up deep inside infantry units without the friendly models covering their flanks that they get from standard formations. Individual horses don't have the mass to free themselves, if they're in the dead center of an enemy unit.

I think this might have been winnable for a pegasus knight spam, purely because they would not be anywhere near as hampered by the map or the size of the skaven armies. However I don't have confidence that they (the pegasus knights) would have walked out of the battle with the same strength remaining that the Grail Knights managed.

Legend, in my experience you want to be between the enemy army and the artillery to inflict the friendly fire better, not on top of the infantry.

Camera control is the reason why I am not capable of doing stuff like this ... because you need it to have the awareness (and thus control) of all your troops.

I played on hard and built a grail guardian and Knight army. You could just charge it at w/e and it would destroy everything

Against infantry it doesn't matter if they have a bonus vs large. Their charge bonus gives them the 90% hit cap and an ap weapon strength of over 100. Short of beefy elite infantry like black orcs and braced anti large units they'll easily 1 hit any model.
But the anti large is especially useful for extra damage against single entities and more hitting chance/ damage output in sustained combat vs large.
Pretty much all sustained combat should be with large, since only large opponents are fast enough to catch up. So anti large simply is better.
They won't hit the hit cap against units with a lot of melee defence though right?
@@Xonarag they will cause 1- the only way you Won't hit is if its something like ironbreakers and 2- you do know MD gets reduced when being attacked in the sides and rear right? and optimal cav usage rarely involves a full on frontal charge
and yeah what that guy said above is why the myth that elite cav is bad against high armour needs to stop...grail knights may not have the AP tag but they have a high enough AP ratio to where even if you do have heavy armour they are still hitting you for over 70 WS
@@Xonarag 100+ charge bonus gives them an ecfective 180 attack. 130 should be enough against even ironbreakers (ai build about 80md)
and as far as I know those are the best defenders.
