For me Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, actually more than not in Thailand too, and then India, Mexico, (Mediterranean, many countries and cultures) man I think all of these cuisines are my favorites in some way because they are all hand-held foods!

Joel, congratulations on your wedding. The Simpsons had an episode where accidentally Marge ended up in Little Ethiopia. The concept of family unity, generosity, sharing is clearly demonstrated in the episode. Ethiopians prefer eating from one large tray, Mesob, as your mom aptly described it. Gursha (ጉርሻ) is the practice of feeding one another. It is an expression of love and caring. My advice to anyone who is invited to an Ethiopian family meal; don’t eat a lot with your own hands because the family members that invited you will be giving you Gursha after Gursha 😊till you are stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey 😂.
Lentils is Misir (ምስር) if it is whole, and Misir Kik (ምስር ክክ) if it is split Lentils. Cabbage is Tikil Gomen (ጥቅል ጏመን). I’m glad you and your family enjoyed your meal. Your understanding of Ethiopian meal etiquette and knowledge of spices is admirable. Thanks for highlighting Ethiopian cuisine and culture. Many blessings to you and your family. Please reach out if you ever happen to come to Los Angeles so we can share a meal and hopefully more of the culture and tradition of Ethiopia.

1, you gave Gursha to your mom only once. It should be twice. 2, you should have Gursha your grand mom and your wife. 3, the restaurant should have included the eggs with the Doro wat.

Ron!!! Goooooood morning man, and thanks for always greeting everyone together! Well man, that is indeed a hard question (what are we "missing," and because its early in the morning here, I'm gonna be thinking much more deeply than just food :) ) So! Actually I never miss the foods you've mentioned, pizza is the only one that I like but we've always made pizza at home (even in Africa) - the thing I always "miss" about USA is and has only ever been the people! My people, my family and friends, but also the PEOPLE of every color and nation that make up the USA. I've always loved that, and that's the thing I miss (#2 would be nature, the big outdoors and the accessible outdoors, that is something that USA has that few other places do).

Love the video. The love you have for the food is great to see. Just a tiny bit correction is the white enjera is not rice based. Its Teff based. The smallest grain in the world and it originated in Ethiopia. And its also glutten free. There is nech teff (white teff) and key tef (the brown one). Because of the scarcity of the grain outside of Ethiopia restaurants tend to mix the batter with rice and other grains. "wot" means stew. Keep up the good work.

Aloha @Scott, hoping this finds you well! I’m so sad to see and read of the devastation & destruction caused by the wildfires in Maui. I pray you, your family and community are safe - if memory serves correctly I don’t think you’re in Maui but nevertheless you’ve all been affected. I’m sending love and prayers for everyone in Hawaii. It was so shocking how swiftly lives and livelihoods were lost. You and yours are incredibly brave and just know we’re praying for you all. Much, much love and hugs 🥰🥰🥰🫂🫂🫂❤💚💛

Sorely missing this! Went through Ann Arbor a number of years ago, wish I had known about this. I always seem to miss Ethiopian food, when I'm in a town that has it or, live some where that doesn't. Shout out to Grandma! and welcome back to C.M.!

Glad to hear you are back home safe and sound and yes there is no place like home. Next time you plan to come to the USA I would love to show you The Eastern Shore of Maryland and all its beautiful iconic small towns including our National Seashore Park with Wild Horses at Assateague Island, fishing people that bring the bounty of our ocean and bay. The many small islands that only ferry boats can access and no cars driven on the islands. We also have a strong Indigenous American tribal community. I personally live very close to Berlin MD named best small town in America for many years now and gorgeously picturesque.

The food looked delicious. Not to take away from the fantastic meal...but...I couldn't help but smile when your mom did such a "mom thing" during pre-meal prayer. She was doing that "mom head nodding" in agreement with your thankfulness for family and invoking help and wellbeing for others. It's been many years since my mom has passed, but I remember when I was younger watching her and other moms nodding their head while someone said prayers. That little nod made me feel secure in their sincerity of prayer. It was a family meal indeed. Thank you for sharing.
