Does the smoke deter the aerial blood suckers? My father-in-law believed in smoking cigars when out in those conditions. Haven't needed transfusions yet. :) When MT was hit with the Canadian smoke a month ago, it was lovely within 3 feet above the water.
Never heard of mosquito coils? As a native Minnesotan and nature photographer yes, the mosquitoes in the wilderness are trouble. The coils are priceless. Sorry you hated it here so much.
The barn was picturesque. I can't stand Canada either. Whenever I see them, I start waving my arms like windmills and kicking out my legs before I get right up to them and they usually move out of my way. But I have been chased by them in the past.

Smoke does deter them but it has to be really dense … the little bit we had doesn’t do anything
