In 9:24 actually you CAN add a stroke on top of a stroke. You just need to duplicate the current stroke inside the object and make sure it has a different size and color from the other one to make it visible. That way you dont need to create a secondary path that needs to be linked.
I'll be honest, loved your workflow tips and tricks, really helps. But the tutorial part was hard to follow, since the UI was pretty small, couldn't really track your mouse and follow through to see which tabs to go into, to acess this and that. Hope this helps c:
Another tip for people struggling like i was - if your strokes keep converting to fill shapes when in AE, make sure they are just the basic brush stroke!
Thanks for this tutorial, Emonee! Quick question: When you set the matte on the red pattern (7:35) what did you use to shortcut adding that matte effect to the layer? You set a matte in four less steps than I would I have thought: I would have copied the black stroke layer, set it above the red and turned it into a matte. You were a matte ninja!!
This just might be the video that jump starts my future in motion graphics. I've studied traditional 2D animation but I understand it's becoming less and less relevant, especially in a business marketplace. Thank you for this!!
Great vid, excited to try this stuff out! Wish I watched this before I did my last project, although thankfully it was simple enough that I was still able to manage without.
i guess how long it takes you depends on how much knowledge/skill you have to both programs, and how many shortcuts you are able to take. For example with the robot, I imagine the creator made one shoulder, then pasted it to another side, to avoid creating it twice. Also with skill, some can do this in an estimated 6 hours but someone else it takes 10
These are technically the fundamentals, but I've met a lot, if not most motion graphic designers who doesn't even pre-comp, what more organizing layer.
Hi Emonee Great video! Does Overloard updates the Ai layers in Ae if you save them after in Ai? For instance, you have a L_123 layer in Ai when you imported to Ae and changed it later to L_Arm. Does Ae updates to the new name with Overloard? Thanks!
As far as I've been able to tell with using Overlord is that it's a good supplemental script. It won't fix all your problems but it's nice to have around when you need it. Mostly when I need to quickly snag something from Illustrator.
That's the direction I'm leaning too. People are trying to make AE do what it just isn't all that great at: Animation. The process is incredibly clunky and frustrating.
Hello ma'am, would you please make a more simple easy tutorial? Let's say from a simple illustration like a face. It's hard for me as a beginner to follow these steps. Thank youuu
After voice over first time I saw 😕I really 😱scared, shocked you really look like Cartoon illustration, but knowledge you have is awesome👏👏👏 any how thank you for your 💖tutorial, and my personal request kindly feed yourself with good protein shakes, and food..
Next time you should work with your own design, the video becomes confusing because of how frequently you trail off to explain how you navigated animating someone else's design choices
Sadly this is a realistic portrayal of what a paid animator will face: working with other people's designs and having to manage the way they made it in Illustrator. I'm in a project right now where this is exactly what I'm dealing with.
You should definitely spend the money on Overlord, even if you are broke, it saves you so much time instantly, and you can focus on animating rather than waste time stupidly to move and rename layers and sub-layers. It is a valuable advice. If you animate vectors regularly, you make your life miserable by not buying this plugin.
Jesus! Why does anyone want to use After Effects? Just watching this video makes my brain hurt. Use ToonBoom or even Adobe Animate. I can’t believe AE won’t even import Illustrator files with layer names intact. You seriously have to go through and rename everything in Adobe’s own app?
Came here for a comment like this. Why are people animating in after effects when Adobe has animate where none of the limitations you mention even are an issue. Plus bones and better tweening for both paths and fills. This video was frustrating
Okay I'm going to be such a fucking hater for this. But I really REALLY dislike Emonee. All her work is based around someone else's. She gets an idea from someone else's work, then she gets an artist to do the illustrations and then she SOMETIMES mographs it a little bit. She doesn't illustrate at all and her skills for Mograph are incredibly basic to say the least. It seems like she lifts on top of other people. The way she starts the video about boasting who she worked with doesnt tell me ANYTHING about her actual skills and frankly I don't give a shit she worked with Kanye. Get me a tutorial with this dude that made the illustration, he seems incredible and super creative. I'm sure she's a great art director, but I much rather look at the people she hires than look at her work to be honest.

Thank you Emonee! Great tutorial! 🙂
9:20 You can actually do that by adding (Offset paths) - (round join) and put fill as skin color. No duplicating and all on one stroke.
Excellent, Emonee. Your focus on the stuff that matters is great. Thx
I'll be honest, loved your workflow tips and tricks, really helps. But the tutorial part was hard to follow, since the UI was pretty small, couldn't really track your mouse and follow through to see which tabs to go into, to acess this and that.

Another tip for people struggling like i was - if your strokes keep converting to fill shapes when in AE, make sure they are just the basic brush stroke!
I love her! Does she teach any SOM courses?
i love this video!
THANKYOU GOD BLESS YOU ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for the tips and tricks, Emonee! How did you animate the person on the skateboard?
Thanks for this tutorial, Emonee! Quick question: When you set the matte on the red pattern (7:35) what did you use to shortcut adding that matte effect to the layer? Try Video Copilot FX console. Must have plugin that speeds up workflow.
^^ yes! It’s free on video copilot
This just might be the video that jump starts my future in motion graphics. I've studied traditional 2D animation but I understand it's becoming less and less relevant, especially in a business marketplace. Thank you for this!!
The way you say "Sooperrr Important" is always Sooooper Important.
Great vid, excited to try this stuff out! Wish I watched this before I did my last project, although thankfully it was simple enough that I was still able to manage without.
That doesn't look like a thumb to me. Great video!
Love the content! Can you do the same with Photoshop?
Nicely structured video and well-said do the underneath comments, these save my life!!
Dope
If you create shape from the layer, can you still edit the original Illustrator file and have the shape layer update automatically?
No, have to redo all over again.
This is super cool! Any chance you could estimate how many work hours all that took from AI file to finished animation?

Nice one. I m looking for a cartoon animation teacher
Thank you so much! This is information is so helpful
I would put the layer above it in the group👍🏽
❤️❤️❤️
I'm sorry, but that thumbs up looks like something completely different lmao
❤️
Stirring Wheel
Out of curiosity, what file did you save it as?
its like that how to draw an owl tutorial
HOW long did all this take? (motion creation)
Hi Emonee
Great video!
Does Overloard updates the Ai layers in Ae if you save them after in Ai? For instance, you have a L_123 layer in Ai when you imported to Ae and changed it later to L_Arm. Does Ae updates to the new name with Overloard?
Thanks!
No they are not synced. But you have a button in Overlord to export your shapes back to Illustrator (that will keep the naming as well).
@@jeansienkin thanks!
As far as I've been able to tell with using Overlord is that it's a good supplemental script. It won't fix all your problems but it's nice to have around when you need it. Mostly when I need to quickly snag something from Illustrator.
that robot is jackin it. other than that, great job!
I see your artwork is not cropped in AE, how can I import my AI file to AE without cropping?
You have an awesome voice
what about gradient? gradient doesn't work if I convert to shape layer
i subscribe for new experience
use moho DA
That's the direction I'm leaning too. People are trying to make AE do what it just isn't all that great at: Animation. The process is incredibly clunky and frustrating.
It's not a robot, it's a mobile suit!
Hello ma'am, would you please make a more simple easy tutorial? Let's say from a simple illustration like a face. It's hard for me as a beginner to follow these steps. Thank youuu
Does the thumb have another meaning to it? Lol
JK Great video!
aftereffects is so difficult :(
"Stirring wheel" ??😅🤭
You are so beautiful
I just can't support Adobe products
After voice over first time I saw 😕I really 😱scared, shocked you really look like

Everything was perfect til you plugged in Overlord.

Dave Arcade’s art is better
Thank you !
