    I have only been fishing bass since Thanksgiving 2021 when my son came to Florida and showed me there were fish in my retention ponds. Being really new to this sport, I don't have a boat so I am fishing exclusively in a retention pond in my subdivision. I bought the rod and reel recommended in the video - great setup. Learned how to tie a double uni and put 15lb fluorocarbon on 15lb braid. I was throwing a Texas rigged 7" Strike King Rage Tail in green pumpkin and on March 3rd, 2022 I caught a 9.85 pound, 25-1/4 inch large mouth bass. Hooked for life. Thank you for all the advice.

    Baitcasters are a lot of fun, despite their quirks. But if you can only take one rod out with you, it should always be a spinning rod IMO.

    I just bought the exact reel, and line setup with the leader and it casts amazing. No more twists or curls unspooling in the reel it casts so much further. Total game changer with the braid.

      Why do you use leaders with braid ?

    • @ertren6
      @ertren6 3 года назад +2

      @@mikefreetage6808 cheaper and you have more options. Cranking? I can tie on a 10 foot mono leader. Skipping or using finesse techniques? I can throw in a fluro leader as well as change line sizes. I essentially have limitless options with just 1 rod. Also, it is way cheaper in my eyes. Braid last way longer, no memory, and the most sensitive of the bunch. You can a 100 dollar rod into a 200 with braid lol

    I'm weird. I started with those long bamboo poles as a kid like 1980. Then spincasted (good spincasters are also underrated). Then used the old school ambassador baitcaster and thought it was awesome. Finally as a teen with a job and license, I finally bought my first spinning reel. Later I got into the sleeker, smaller baitcasters. I think I still have more spinning reels than baitcaster, from size 10 (1000) to 6500. But you're right , it isn't even an option. Having versatile spinning combos with you are a must!

    I would really appreciate some advice; I am a beginner. I bought a St. Croix Premier medium power fast action 7 foot rod with a Penn Battle III size 3000 spinning reel. My main line is a 20 lb Power Pro braided line and my leader will be the 15 lb Seaguar Blue label fluorocarbon line. I have hooks of all sizes from size 12 to 5/0, offset worm hooks, extra wide gap hooks, gamakatsu octupus hooks, size 2 Walleye hooks. I have spring as well as slip bobbers and tungsten slip sinkers as well as split shot. I also have swivels. As for bait, I use live worms, I also have crankbaits, senko worms, shads, poppers, finesse football jigs, strike king rage bugs and spinner baits. I plan on fishing on lakes from my fishing canoe for walleye, smallmouth, largemouth bass, perch, bluegill and the occasional pike or muskie. My question is, how do I set up my rod? For example, I thought of using a swivel between the main and leader, and then I can attach various pre - cut and pre - tied leader lines that have different hooks for the different fish I am targeting, which will go on and off the swivel via a figure-of-eight loop knot. Above the swivel (on the main line), I will have a bead, and then 1/2 oz bullet slip weight and then a slip bobber with a bead and bobber stopper knot on top to control the depth. But then I see many people saying they hardly ever use swivels and they just tie the braided to fluorocarbon leader directly. And then I see many fishermen not using a bobber at all. So I am not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the long message.

    If you guys are wondering how long his leader is you can search up trf leader to learn more but basically he said when you reel your lure all the way to the tip of your rod the leader knot should be just on the outside of the reel maybe 1-2 inches

    I can't decide between tatula xt MHF, dobyns maverick medium/fast, I could maybe get that normal tatula or the dobyns fury, but still the recommended lure weights are really throwing me off. I want to weightless 5 inch senkos, but have a big of wiggle room for a tad lighter/smaller or a tad heavier. I know this isn't really something that can be done without buying 2 rods, so I figured I'd probably go lighter end and then if I want heavier I need a baitcaster secondary.

    I still don't get using a 3000 series reel, I know a lot of Anglers use them but to me it's too much weight for Finesse Fishing. 2500 is as big as I go. I've never had a Bass spool a 2500. Also, great Walleye. That might have flirted with a Master Angler (if that sort of thing is important to you). Here in Michigan it's 29 inches.

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  4 года назад

      The reason for the 3000 is so that the line spools off the line easier. I just feel confident with it in my hand and can cast my arm off

  • @BG-xs9uv
    @BG-xs9uv 4 года назад

    Tyler, can you go over drag? I get that it’s how rigid the reel allows the line to retrieve. When and why is drag appropriate? This is new to me.
    Also, light versus medium on a spinning rod. I have a light spinning rod that I bought years ago as recommended by the guy as Bass Pro Shop, for the life of me I don’t know why. I’m sure he explained when and where I’d want it and what I’d throw with it, but.... I’m clueless to these light and medium rods.

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  4 года назад

      Stick with medium! And yes, you can over do the drag. You’ve gotta just play around with it and figure out how tight it should be on the hookset and then how tight to have it during the fight

      No, don’t get an ugly stick. Get a Lew’s TP1x

      @@TylersReelFishing thank you for the recommendation. I was thinking about getting a St Croix… is this on par as far as quality?

    Hi! How long would the fc leader be for this setup? Just bought braid and fc for my spinning rod and I wanted to know how to exactly set it up. Thanks in advance! Love your channel! ❤️

      Hi Rosie! I was wondering the same thing. Hopefully someone can help explain lol

      About 6-8 foot long. Just short enough to cast and not have the connecting knot in the reel. I want the knot above my finger holding the line

    I still hate a spinning rod but they can be fun.

    Hey Tyler I have a question, what size spinning reel do you recommend on a medium rod?

    Whats your favorite size in the spinning reel 2000 or 3000?

    Hey Tyler, really awesome walleye. Did you get any measurements? Where were you fishing in NY? It looked like Lake Erie. I live and fish in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Braid to leader connection knots for spinning rods.....look up the Red Phillips knot. Great knot and super easy to tie. I've used FG and Uni to Uni previous to converting to the Red Phillips.

      I’m looking to go on a fishing trip to NY (I’m from CT) and was wondering if you had any recommendations for best bass spots? Any help is greatly appreciated!

      It was the St. Lawrence River. Measured 28 easy, and I’m sure if I measured better it would have been bigger

      @@MKB1L There are literally 100s of choices. Thousand Island area/St Lawrence river (where Tyler shot this video), Lake Erie (western NY near Buffalo), Cayuga Lake (one of the Finger Lakes), and Oneida Lake (central NY just north of Syracuse) are some of most well known and have all hosted Bassmaster tournaments. Any of the Finger Lakes (I fish at Otisco Lake frequently).
