    Someone wrote (below) that Grieg is underrated, I couldn't agree more. His music is a delight; rarely profound but always composed with great skill and poetry. If you don't know the Holberg Suite, then please look it up; it will grab you within 30 seconds. Delightful and charming: Two words we don't hear enough of these days...! Bravo, Paavo Jarvi and this wonderfully delicate performance.

      You're leaving out one of the greatest piano concerti of all time, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor.

    • @ComposerInUK
      @ComposerInUK 10 лет назад +5

      Gerry Rains It's a great concerto, isn't it? And I am aware that he wrote other pieces, like the Violin Sonata. And I wasn't being critical (and I know you weren't suggesting that,) Grieg excelled, though, as a miniaturist and we have very few of those.

      My god thank you, I have heard it so many times but never actually known what it was called, the Holberg Suite. To return a favor, check out his piece ''Peer Gynt Anitra's Dance'' if you don't already know of it.

    I used to play The Holberg Suite, the 4 hand arrangement with my late friend of forty years ago who was a phenomenal pianist. This is very bittersweet for me...
    I love so many of Grieg's works!

    Brahms and Tchaikovsky met for the first time at a party in Germany. They didn't care for each other's music and seemed about to get into a big argument. When Grieg and his wife entered the gathering, both cheerful and benevolent people. Within minutes he had Brahms and Tchaikovsky conversing calmly and drinking together.

      @@VallaMusic Thanks! The coda: the two moody geniuses met only one more time. And this time they went to a cafe and apparently talked at length over a meal with nary a cross word. So the Grieg spirit went with them!

    Norwegian dances op.35, piano 4-hands (ORIGINALLY), HERE PARVO HAS 2 HANDS AS DO MOST OF THE ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENTALISTS).
    For the rest of his life, Edvard Grieg loved playing the piano duo, and he did so with his wife, Nina. She was an outstanding singer and an excellent pianist. One of her special abilities was the Vomblattspiel. In Grieg's concerts, both played very often Norwegian dances.

    The third one is also used in Peer Gynt. I'm not sure though what came first. The Peer Gynt music, the composition of the four dances, or if the melodies are maybe even traditional and just elaborated on by Grieg.

I remember it being the intro for a norwegian TV-show as a kid, so I just thought it was composed by whomever would compose for that particular show.

      Matthew Dockray If it’s anything like the tuba part, there’s not much to it. I have played the tuba part, and it’s tacet for two movements and then for the others it’s a classic bass line on one and two. Fun to play though! Hope that helps!

    The "strong" parts are excellent. Grieg is underrated - to me. Always Mozart and Beethoven are admired as the gods of classic music, but - for me - none of them composed such great, "soulrecharging" melody minutes as Grieg. Turkish March? Eine Kleine Ncht Musik? Not bad, but In the Hall of the Mountain King (with choir ending) is 100 times worthier, much deeper, weighter. Or take Moonshine sonata's 3. movement. Good, but 40% redundant repetition.

    • @anitrabn2110
      @anitrabn2110 3 года назад +1

      I also love Grieg for his wonderful melodies, but we must remember that Mozart and Beethoven were composers of classical period and Grieg is from the Romantic era. These are two different types of music - I don't think we should compare them. Furthermore Beethoven's music had a huge impact on many of the works which were composed later. So - if we love Grieg - we should appreciate Beethoven.
