      To further expand on what the kappelmeister said: It is actually the second Symphony the Mendelssohn wrote. But he withdrew it for revisions after a few performances because he was not satisfied. And then he never came around to revising it. So it was not published until after his death. And since it was published last it was numbered 5.
      Numberings in Mendelssohn Symphonies are the worst kind of mess.
      The 4th is not the 4th, the 2nd is not the 2nd and the 3rd is not the 3rd. The 4th is the 3rd, the 3rd is the 4th and the 2nd (Lobgesang) would have been the 4th, but Mendelssohn was unsure how to call it.

      Bach of course: 'Ein feste Burg'. But there is more in this little jewel: Haydn in the relationship of slow introduction to the main part of movement 1 and a foreshadowing of Bruckner (the early symphonies) in the third movement.

    This is perhaps my favorite Mendelssohn symphony; the Italian and the Scottish are too well known. This symphony has such brilliance, especially the 4th movement. It is so climactic, so melodic, a "mighty fortress" of musical achievement. My most beloved Mendelssohn symphony. Note the fugue at 28:20. That final sounding note is to my ear dissonant.

    • @patrickglass9323
      @patrickglass9323 2 года назад +3

      Eileen - Well said indeed! The 4th movement is quite wonderful: developed from the 1st movement's gently rousing and melodic theme. This returns in the surprisingly joyous peaks of the 4th movement. Yes, truly a 'mighty fortress' of unforgettable musical achievement.

      One doesn't usually get so pure a connection with Shostakovich as one would with Beethoven or Mozart. When you hear the funeral march of the Eroica symphony, you know what Beethoven was going through, the funeral march fills your heart with somber emotions. The same cannot be said of Dimitri. Chi ammira molto Mendelssohn potra' apprezzare qs sinfonia come una vetta altissima sulla quale Mendelssohn giunge e sulla quale trascina il suo ascoltatore.
    Occorre sentirla molte volte anche confrontando orchestre diverse e direttori diversi. A me sembra che Jeremie Rohrer interpreti lo spartito con la massima precisione soprattutto nel amalgamare i musicisti in un "sin-fonico" vivere l'l'esecuzione complessiva
    E' geniale se lo si raffronta.
    con altri direttori. Personalmente amo molto Vladimir Ashkenazy . Jeremie Rohrer
    e' estremamente intelligente nella regolazione dei volumi acustici, nei silenzi voluti da M., e nel far vivere all'l'orchestra l'evoluzione, lo sviluppo della partitura.
    E' giovane e proprio per qsto molto promettente.

    FOI EM 1830 QUE MENDELSSOHN COMPÔS ESTA ESTUPENDA SINFONIA, PARA COMEMORAR OS 300 ANOS DA CONFISSÃO DE AUGSBURGO. EM SUA ESTRÉIA ELA NÃO FOI BEM ACEITA PELOS INTELECTUALÓIDES DA ÉPOCA. MAS GRAÇAS A DEUS, NOS ÚLTIMOS 50 ANOS, ELA VEM SEM SENDO MUITO COMPREENDIDA E APLAUDIDA NO MUNDO QUASE GERALMENTE. O TEMPO É O SENHOR DA RAZÃO AFINAL DE CONTAS.

    A marvelous testament of the Protestant Reformation. Let it not be forgotten that the work has a supremely spiritual element, built around the great hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." And indeed He is! Mendelssohn was more reverent than many composers in reiterating this, as evidenced by his second symphony and the wondrous composition of "Elijah". We should remember this.
